"Battlestar Galactica" to be recast and remade as a movieSome of you may be elated to hear that there is a Battlestar Galactica film in the works. Not so fast: According to Universal Pictures, the film will be "a complete re-imagination" of the franchise and X-Men director Bryan Singer will direct.
Seriously? Announcing the complete rebooting of a franchise months after the finale of a critically-acclaimed run on Syfy from 2004 to 2009 — one that brought in mainstream audiences and featured many strong and complex female lead characters — just seems wrong. Furthermore, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, a film starring the cast of the Syfy series, has yet to be released. (Its current release date is October 27.) Let's also not forget the Syfy Battlestar prequel, Caprica, which is set to air in January 2010. When negotiations with Universal were still preliminary, the studio indicated that the feature film will be based on the original BSG series from 1978-79. So will this "re-imagination" be a reboot of the reboot by returning to the preboot? My head is spinning and I've already lost interest. If the film is going to go old school, this means no humanoid cylons. For the completely shallow (and I certainly do not deny it in this case), this means: (1) No Number 6.
(2) No Number 8.
(And no hot spine-glowing cylon sex.) Instead, the cylons will all look something like this:
And that is no fun. Going old school means that Starbuck will be male, which is all fine and good, but part of the appeal of the re-imagined Syfy series was seeing Kara "Starbuck" Thrace swigging booze, blowing things up, and kicking ass.
You know what? I'm not ready to move on from the re-imagined Syfy series, so I think I'll just catch Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and be frakkin' done with the franchise. Submitted by on August 17, 2009 - 2:00pm. |

What the frak indeed!
blah
i don't get it. why would you want to frak up something when you could actually make more by doing it right?
not enough headdesk in the world.
--------------------------
OTALIA!! WE. WANT. IT.
yeah, really. someone in
Frakkin hell..
I still can't get over this, found out about it a few days ago, and it's pissing me off... thats fuckin ridiculous, and even more ridiculous is the fact that Singer accepted to do this!!!
WHAT THE FRAK!!!
The show is barely finished and there are a few things still to come (like you said, The Plan and Caprica, both looking super promising). It also redefined the whole BSG universe, and fandom and created very strong roots for this universe. And what's with Bryan Singer, the man used to be this amazing young director full of promises and now he's linked to every franchise reboot or what?? I love his movies but damn Im disappointed in him for deciding to do this...
This is another major mistake from TPTB in the movie industry, way to go dumb people!
What?
First Buffy and now BSG? This is horrible! Why would you want to reimagine something that is already amazing to begin with?
oh....
I've only just started to watch Battlestar (I am part way through season 2) but thanks to a rather hefty dose of spare time and my friends DVD collection I am already hooked. I love Starbuck and Boomer. It just seems so regressive to go back to the original especially to get rid of the great female characters.
It's like doing a Buffy film and basing it on the original film and ignoring all that Joss and the gang did for the 'franchise' - oh wait they're already doing that.
Original is not always better....

Hell to the no
I enjoyed the original series when it aired but no way can we go back to that.
When The Plan airs I think you're going to see so much fan support that there will be additional SyFy BSG movies. I saw the panel at this year's Comic-Con and Edward James Olmos promised as much.

Dear Universal Studios, you
Holy Fraking Balls
Seriously? As a hardcore new school BSG fan, I don't think I'd give this movie a chance...at all. Why ruin a good thing, seriously? Is Hollywood really running out of original ideas?
Oh Frak you...
This really is stupid
And I've already been worried about the Buffy "reboot" and I'm dreading the day when someone says that there's going to be a Xena "reboot." If they won't make a movie with Lucy and Renee in it, then I DON'T want to see it.
No Mary McDonnell as the President either.
No Mary/Laura Roslin is
No way
I completely agree.
No way will I see this film.
To re-iterate...
And again
Like all of you, I have to air my confusion and annoyance at this news! The re-imagined series was awesome, and as you pointed out, the franchise is still not quite finished. Making a movie of BSG based on the original series seems superfluous and counterproductive at best.
Epic fail.
Blame Trek Re-boot
BOOOO!!
Just like the new rumored Buffy film they are going to shoot themselves in the Frakin foot. You are taking one of the most critically acclaimed and thoughtful shows on TV of the last 5 years and going to try to make it into a mainstream popcorn movie.
This is about someone getting the bright idea to try and make more money out the BSG universe. The only way for this kind of crap move to be stopped in the future is to not spend money seeing the film when it comes out.
When well written Sci-Fi projects get incorrectly marketed by Universal (Serenity) and end up fizzling out but something like this project moves forward - UGH!
wow
it is sad that people jump on things so quickly. Do we need areboot. I wish thatthe peopel making movies would take chances on good stories rather and repakaging the same old same old.

Rude alert! Rude alert! An electrical fire has knocked out my voice-recognition unicycle! Many Wurlitzers are missing from my database! Abandon shop! This is not a daffodil! Repeat: This is not a daffodil!
Reboot should be booted
Jesus Frakkin' Christ !
And I'm not even religious.
NOOOO
I do NOT, I repeat, NOT accept this at all! It's crazyness!

that blows
I can't imagine why the BSG almighty would want to revert back to the old, overly campy show. The recent series is far and away superior in every shape and form. Not to mention that Starbuck is one of the best things about BSG and to get rid of a strong female character like that just sucks. On top of all that, I can't really imagine anyone playing Adama other than Edward James Olmos.
booooo
Not going to give this another thought.
People should let fans of the original have their film.
Meh
The series was pretty overrated anyway. Sure it looked stunning, and was really quite good for the first few years. But that last season was just... uncomfortably bad. And it didn't even have the decency to with the "so bad its awesome" route like, well, everything else sci-fi (or "scyfy" now *eye roll*) channel has ever done.

Frak, that's a hell of an FTL jump...
Frak, that's a hell of an FTL jump...
What I don't understand, right now, is why they're trading a complex story for a manichean one. Oh, yeah, trading. Trade. Got it. Mr. Larson, I don't know you, but something tells me that you're trying to use the new series' notoriety to make money with your old series.
I've seen some episodes of the old series and they're fun to watch, but nowhere close to the quality of the 2003 series. And yeah, we'd lose all the strong females characters of the show. :(
Of course I'll watch it (I won't pay for it. They want to make easy money, they won't get it from me). I won't be able to sleep knowing there's a BSG movie I haven't seen. I think I won't sleep after (nightmares!) but well... I'm curious.
BTW, WHY isn't Mary McDonnell in The Plan?! I can't find her on The Plan's IMDB page.

And I think I just died a little inside...
The blonde booze swigging, blowing things up, and arse kicking are all key components of my Syfy diet! Latent feminist backlash anyone?
Guess it's back to the Xena DVD Marathons...

2 things
For one thing - i love starbuck and no. 8 and no. 6 and I say BOO YOU UNIVERSAL - don't fix what ain't broke (to use bad english which pains me to do because I'm an english teacher-in-training)
for another - I just met this girl from my uni who looks just like No. 8 and guess what her name is? OMFG It's SHARON!!
did I laugh? no - because I follow social cues and that would be weird, but I was so surprised and a little doubtful at the reality. Lucky me right? SHE'S MY FRAKING DREAM CYLON...and she's a cute little first year nawwwwww :P
But yes - no to universal - yes to sharon from connex!

your room is a crappy little shoebox - love mastercard
Haha that's awesome.
There was a girl in my school who looks like 6. So of course each time I saw her white hair I couldn't help but think "HOT CYLON SPOTTED!", then I actually met her. Southern French accent. That was my FTL jump back to Earth. :(

Bizarre frakkin' idea
Jerk Benedict will be
It amazes me how....
Frak no!
This sounds like s**t. BSG was so amazing and successful precisely because it revamped the original series. The cast (including skin job cylons, Starbuck as a female, Edward James Olmos, Mary MacDonald, and so many other great actors) made that show, to change that will ruin it. The original BSG from the 70's was too tongue-in-cheek to be turned into a drama.
If my company (Tor Books) does a movie tie-in book for this, which is very likely, I won't be designing it.
That sucks...
Sucks on so many levels.
Also, I do believe that there was a "Boomer" on the Original Battlestar, but he wasn't a Cylon, and was... a he.
And Starbuck a dude, that would just be the bitter cherry on top of the horrible sundae. First taking Buffy away from the genius who made Buffy Buffy (even if he didn't do everything right, he did 98% of the series right), now this...
The Star Trek reboot was different. It's been 6 or 7 years since they brought out Nemesis, and more than a decade since they released any movie with even a couple of the original characters in it (ST Generations, 1994 I think). There was time, there are 7 year olds who have no idea who Shatner is, or what Shatner's Kirk was like. For all the Star Trek has screwed gays and lesbians over the years, this, they did at the right time, rebooting not too soon, but not too late either. (Plus, it helped that really, after Enterprise watching dog poo would have been an improvement on the franchise).
This, they're going to wind up doing this at the wrong way and everyone's going to be pissed off. The few 78 fans, and the TV remake fans... I can't wait for BG: The Plan though...
What the frack indeed.
I'm trying to keep an open mind about this, but I also believe that if something ain't broke, you shouldn't fix it. The cast of the series was amazing, why don't they make the movie using them, or as many of them as they can?
Worst case scenario: number 6 being played by Jessica Simpson and Starbuck by Jennifer Love Hewitt.
/wrist
I heard about the movie, but I didn't know it was going to be completely recast. Not to mention, the old series was horrible.
I think I'll just go slit my wrists now.
