Australian conservatives put pressure on “Home and Away”

Several international news sources have reported that Australian television network Seven Network buckled under pressure from conservative groups and will show a watered down version of a same-sex kiss between police officer Charlie Buckton deck hand Joey Collins tomorrow night on soap opera Home and Away.

However, according to Backtothebay.net, a Home and Away fansite, the kiss will air as planned.

As we reported earlier this month, Charlie and Joey’s relationship was slated to develop from platonic to romantic over the course of five weeks. Although we will not know whether the uncut version will air until tomorrow, there is no question that news of the upcoming kiss has caused steam to fly out of some conservatives’ ears.

Seven’s current affairs show Today Tonight did a story that featured a conservative lobby group called Pro-Family Perspectives complaining about a so-called gay agenda. Media commentator David Knox, from the TV Tonight website, said yesterday the PG classification allowed for adult themes with limitations and did not discriminate between gay and straight content.

“It’s sad that in 2009 a kiss is considered more threatening to advertisers and family values than stalkers, serial killers and kidnappers, all of which sustain [Home and Away] story-lines on a regular basis,” Knox said.

Angela Conway of Pro Family Perspectives accused the show of developing “quite sexualised plot lines” and Seven drama chief John Holmes declined to comment

I guess no one felt compelled to complain about this kiss, which currently appears on the front page of Home and Away’s official site.

Sexualized plotline alert! Someone notify Pro Family Perspectives.

Let’s see what other plot lines are on this week’s docket.

Oh look! A hit and run.

And attempted murder! What a wholesome family-friendly storyline!

As David Knox noted above, violent crime is deemed to be acceptable by groups like Pro Family Perspectives, yet a kiss between two women is a sign that society is falling apart.

On a final note, here are some spoilers on Charlie and Joey’s relationship from backtothebay.net:

Episode 4822 (Tue March 31) – Charlie saves Joey from a terrifying fate.

Episode 4823 (Wed April 1) – Charlie is confused after her kiss with Joey.

Episode 4827 (Tue April 7) – Charlie tells Joey she can’t act on her feelings for her.

Episode 4833 (Wed April 15) – Charlie and Joey admit they are in love with each other.

So two people admitting that they care for each other and are in love is a “sexualized” plotline? That Angela Conway of Pro Family Perspectives certainly has a dirty, dirty mind.
