Where have you been?

My name is globalgrrl, and I am a map addict. Antique maps, Google maps, mind maps — I love 'em all. So my new favorite timewaster is the Visited States and Visited Countries site. It's simple and addictive; select locations from a list and the site generates a personalized map of your travels, your family history, the places where you are considered an outlaw for being too much of a Mandana Jones fan — wait a minute, that last one's just me.

I'll get on that empty half of the country (later this week, in fact) but I hope to someday fill out the entire thing. In the meantime, I've been having fun with a few other permutations.

There's the obvious choice — places where I can strive to achieve bed-death legally — but that lone, Massachusetts-shaped red spot is just too depressing to look at. The world map is almost as sad, especially if you take away Canada:

The list of countries where Angelina has adopted kids will soon overtake that one, especially if she really does take next year off, and the list of places where the majority of straight women voters would switch teams for her is just too easy.

I've done far too many of these already, and it hasn't gotten boring yet. So readers, where have you been?

    Greenland

As opposed to where I've been this reminds me of where I want to go. Namely, Greenland. Caty's been a little reticent on the topic of Greenland, because it's a pricey trip, but I'll wear her down...eventually :D As for where I've been: Canada, England, France, Portugal, Lithuania, Italy and over half of the states in the US. Favorite state (other than my home state) - New Mexico. Least favorite state - New Jersey. I never should've driven through Camden at night back in 1982.

    Thailand, my perspective

Phuket was two nice lazy days at the beach so we didn’t really see much other than the area near our hotel. We just needed two days of pampering between Vientiane, Laos and Bangkok.

I don’t know how a regular tourist would take on Bangkok. I would do a lot of research before I go if I didn’t have people there to take us around. It was just so crowded. I have a thing again crowded place, especially when the place is unfamiliar. Luckily, we know people who lived there and can take us around. I am trying to remember moments the stick up in my mind. Let see, there was shopping, the floating market, one of the beaches along the Gulf of Thailand (we had to look out for the jelly fish), Wat Phra Kaew & Grand Palace, and probably other wats (Buddhist temples). I remember visiting many wats and lots of driving or sitting in traffic.

    Thailand & Australia

Thailand is pretty easy to visit as it gets a ton of foreign visitors each year. A friend and I did it with a couple of guidebooks and some common sense.

Bangkok is big, but it has a public transportation system so you can get around. Or if you are risk adverse, use taxis. Just make sure you have someone write down, in Thai, where you want to go. And, also where you are staying - in Thai.

A few days in Bangkok and then sometime in other parts of Thailand can make for a great trip!

Australia's even easier to visit, once you've recovered from the plane flight (over 37 hours in airtime for me, not including all the zillion other hours waiting in airports).

Many visitors find it easy to drive there so you don't have to use tour companies. Well, except for Melbourne which has a truly heart-stopping (for Americans) turn called a "hooker." I can't even begin to describe it because I was too busy screaming in my head each time I went through one. It basically is this death defying turn across a million miles (kilometers) of on-coming traffic.

Keep in mind that Australia is HUGE! You will either need to fly from place to place or schedule some long road trips. Figure out ahead of time where you want to go and how much time you plan to stay there. Again, it's a BIG place and there's alot to see.

About both places: wear sunscreen, drink lots of water and have fun!

    Aljan's picture

    OMG!

I'm about to move to Melbourne and I can tell you just the thought of that turn called the "hooker" you just described is heart-stopping for this Australian. Damn I think I'll take the trams.
    willowtree's picture

    haha!

i cant believe the 'hook turn' rated a mention! as a Melburnian, I can promise you its not as scary as it sounds! there are only about 10 spots where you have to do them and they are all in the city centre - and as there's no parking anyway you are definately better off tramming and avoiding cars altogether!

    where in the world?

currently live in Scotland, but have also lived in England and Australia.

other countries visited: Ireland (north and south); Wales; France; Germany; Spain, Netherlands; Switzerland; South Africa; China (including Hong Kong before it returned to Chinese rule); Malaysia; Canada; USA.  sadly, that only equates to 5% of the world, but my passport is getting renewed shortly and i intend to use it frequently in the coming years!

    Maps

Part of what my gf liked about me on our first date was that I had a whole bunch of maps in bag in preparation for an upcoming road trip from NY to MT.

    Thank god for Gibraltar!

Had it not been for that ridiculously small stretch of land lost somewhere between Andalucia, Africa and the UK(???), where hardcore Andalucians, with their thick accents and stereotypical hispanic paraphernelia, suddenly go from ole! and joe! to speaking some sort of English dialect...I wouldn't have been able to say today that I have visited 6% of the world as young as I am and on a student's budget .

BTW, though many of you may feel compelled to visit Gibraltar when travelling through Southern Spain, if you have a car, I advise you not to fuel up while there, the prices are in GBP,yup in pounds. It may look cheaper, it may be decieving, and you may find it hard to believe you are in England, but you are and it's not.

    not much

Well, I live in the Netherlands (that little read dot you went to) But I've been to: France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Great-Britain (Wales, England and Scotland), Belgium, Luxembourg. So only Europe... Well, to be honest, I'm not much into non-western countries... they scare me a bit for some reason:( Well I would love to go to Africa once, and Australia and New Zealand, but I first have a lot more Europe to explore. It's quite bad that I've never been to Italy. But I'm such a Britain freak, that I first want to go there many times! Gosh, what a beautiful country. I like to stay close to home:D And I want to see New York sometimes, but overall not very interested in the US.

    US, Canada & Mexico

All the states but Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Oregon, Washington,  & Alaska (& that is the order that I will someday see them).  Niagara Falls & Toronto, Canada.  Merida, Chitza Nitza (Maya) & Cancun, Mexico.  Someday, London, England & Ireland.  And my girlfriend wants to go back to Italy.  I used to be obsessed with New Zealand, but not sure if I'll make it there.

    Euro-child

Am mainly a Euro-child: England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Greece, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic, and The Netherlands.

Also Morocco, Dubai, and the States (New York, Louisiana (New Orleans - just before the hurricane), Florida (the almost break away republic of Key West).

So far the most beautiful place I have been (many times) is Scotland, although I am hoping Antarctica will pip it when I finally get organised and get out there. Am off to New Zealand and Australia next year though so that might give Bonnie Scotland a run for its money as well.

Favourite people would be the Dutch - I love their tolerance and their laid back vibe. And they all seem to be able to talk a dozen languages! How cool is that?
