Sabra knows she can dance

Last night the unthinkable happened. My top choice actually won a television competition! In some bizarre twist of fate that will likely not be repeated for the next two hundred years, America got it right by voting Sabra Johnson their favorite dancer.

I'd love to be as generous as EW's recapper Adam B. Vary and claim that any result would have been okay with me, but my position on Team Sabra was cemented when she did her "Waiting on the World to Change" solo during the controversial anti-war week.

Not only did that scream put everyone else's to shame, but Sabra stood out on a night when each contestant danced the same routine, to the same song, in the same t-shirt (well, maybe not exactly the same t-shirt — that would have been cruel, as these folks work up quite a sweat).

I could rave on and on about why Sabra was my favorite (because she's incredibly talented and adorable to boot), or why I think So You Think You Can Dance is far and away the best reality competition going these days (because nobody gets robbed, unlike some singers do), but instead I'll let the clips do the talking.

First, the quickstep — all the more amazing because Sabra was having a rough time of it during rehearsals:

Next, the '80s power lunch "Boardroom" dance (to "Sweet Dreams" no less!):

(Incidentally, that particular dance was chosen by Mia Michaels to be recreated during the finale, and I find her taste all the more reason to swoon — as though the excellent choreography, funky haircuts and general vibe weren't enough.)

And at last, the Sabra-Lacey jazz dance. Not a favorite with the judges, but I loved watching it both because of the intricate choreography and because of the chance to see two women dancing together on TV, which remains a rarity. Check it out:

So, any other members of Team Sabra out there? What were your favorite routines? And do you agree that her sass and energy should be bottled and sold?

    Go Sabra

I have been on "team Sabra" as you called it since day one but never thought she would win!!!

So color me THRILLED that she is this years winner!!

    Yes, yes, and yes.

Team Sabra checking in!  And even though they kept mentioning it on the show ad nauseum, to think that the girl has only been dancing for four years just blows me away.  As does her adorable self.  I haven't been this satisfied in a reality competition winner in... forever.  YAY SABRA!

    Very sorry!

Apologies to moo, Leenaomi and anyone else--certainly not my intention to be a spoiler. Perhaps my excitement got in the way of better judgment.

Season 3 is chock full of awesome moments, so I hope you'll still enjoy it. In the meantime, I'll work on my erase-unwanted-spoiler-news superpowers and hope that y'all will forgive me!

I am blown away by that

I am blown away by that last performance between Lacey and Sabra. They can do anything with their bodies. The whole performance was filled with kung fu moves, from the hands and fingers positions, to the monkey style movements...

Now i'd love to see them wield a weapon. I'm sure they'd learn fast and stun martial arts crowds :)

SiG - Meet Motoko Kusanagi... her persona outshines her boobs.

    ...and her hair.

Um, not only should her sass and energy be bottled and sold, but also the genes that gave her such fabulous hair.

"she is like, the cutest, more adorable thing i have ever seen on a stage. and that voice. that little, raspy voice. oh my god, it drives me crazy in the BEST possible way" I totaly agree with you snuffamunkey

I don't think that I wanted to have that major spoiler (I haven't past the top 12 ep). So I don't think that I'm happy as I would be if I got to see it, to feel the tension my self.

Anyway. I'm still happy for Sabra.

And as far as robbing going on. You cannot fake dancing. Either your good, even great or Not. Witch explain why SYTYCD is THE best reality competition out there. I have to say that the panel of judges and choregraphes are doing an awsome job. Talent Talent Talent.

    Lovely

It was either Lacey or Sabra for me so I was very pleased. TsC

    I was thrilled

I just dearly wanted a girl to win this season, and was rooting for both Lacey and Sabra, but being the eternal pessimist I am, I never dreamed that she would win.

But to the dance, I say the judges were crazy when they talked about the Jazz routine between Lacey and Sabra. I thought it was awesome and understandable, but I guess the judges saw differently.

Side note, who wanted to burn Kat Deely's dress? Anyone?

    LiveToWrite's picture

    That's a definite yes on

That's a definite yes on wanting to burn Cat's dress.

I really wanted a girl to win this year also and I was totally thrilled to have the last two girls be Sabra and Lacey (though I was sad to see a couple of the others go earlier).  But Sabra just has that something special that you can train for years and never have.  Starting about a month ago, every week my "Sabra's going to win this" chant got louder so I'm beyond happy she won.

And I agree with the comments about Sabra and Lacey's dance.  Sure, it may not have been technically spectacular but both girls gave it their all and it was absolutely beautiful to watch.

    fickaschu's picture

    umm..

that would be a yes. what was she thin-you know what? i won't even entertain that thought.
    Ashin's picture

    *flails!*

Sabra and Jaimie were my favourite two female dancers, and Hok and Neil were my favourite two male dancers, so to have two of my favourite four make it into the finale and all four of them make it into the top eleven... well, was really, really, happy-making. <333

Sabra is an amazing dancer and an amazing woman, it's nice to see that people got it!
    JHB's picture

    Happy she won too

She was my favorite from day 1 this season. Also want to say I wouldnt mind having a dance or two with Sabra. Also want to say sorry to whoever said this early but sorry that we spoiled it for you about who won.
