Regal Miranda Richardson to join Emily Blunt in "Young Victoria"

Not to have his Oscar thunder stolen by the monarchy again, Martin Scorsese is currently producing 19th-century biopic The Young Victoria, and Miranda Richardson has just signed on as Duchess of Kent to Emily Blunt's Victoria.

Richardson is a great reason to look forward to the film, which starts production this month. Another reason: Devil Wears Prada star Blunt — who actually resembles her filmic mother-to-be even without movie magic — is absolutely made to wear a crown.

The woman just emanates royalty, doesn't she?

Blunt earned legions of lesbian fans playing rich girl Tamsin in My Summer of Love, but I'm an even bigger follower of Richardson, whom I've admired since The Crying Game (and whom I don't blame for the strange, un-sisterly kiss she and Nicole Kidman shared as Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf in The Hours).

Richardson has never really "broken out," in part because as she herself once said during an interview with The New York Times, she "would rather do many small roles on TV, stage or film than one blockbuster that made me rich but had no acting." I for one am happy she decided that the blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was worth doing, because she was brilliant as relentless reporter Rita Skeeter.

Since Young Victoria focuses (shockingly, given the title) on the youthful, romantic side of the Queen, let's hope that the Duchess isn't quite as nosy as Ms. Skeeter — that would make for some rather rough mother-daughter interactions. Let's also hope that this movie is closer in merit to fellow monarchy tales Elizabeth and The Golden Age than it is to the poorly reviewed Gideon's Daughter, in which Richardson and Blunt already appeared together.

Victoria also stars Rupert Friend and Jim Broadbent, and is co-produced by Graham King and Fergie herself (the Duchess, not the Pea). Although there have been plenty of other films about this particular Queen (notably the well-done Mrs. Brown, starring Dame Judi Dench as Victoria later in life), I'm still optimistic. Worst case scenario, we get to watch two gorgeous and commanding women on screen at once, and that's nothing to complain about.

    Miranda!

Miranda Ricahrdson is always a good reason to watch anything. Add Ms Blunt too and I'll definitely be there!
She was one of my first ever crushes when she appeared in the Blackadder series and she never disappoints.
Also worth checking out in The Crying Game, The Hours, Snow White, Merlin, Enchanted April..

Such a lush, intelligent beauty who can still kick some series ass if required (well in my dreams anyway!)

She eats carbs for christ's sake!

    Just wanted to mention...

Blunt is my fashionista hero and she's SUPER nice in person (Yaletown is small and I've run into them a couple of times) - her and Michael Buble are part time Vanouverites who are no fuss and don't draw unnecessary attentions unlike some of the other starts that work/reside here *ehem*Alba *ehem*. That and they're both disgustingly hot.

    From TDWP:

Emily: If I’m not here, Andrea you are chained to that desk.
Andy: Well, what if I need to…
Emily: What? No. One time an assistant left the desk because you know, she sliced her hand open with a letter opener and Miranda missed Lagerfeld just before he boarded a 17 hour flight to Australia. She now works at TV Guide.

    love love love.

    Gideon's Daughter

I have to stick up for "Gideon's Daughter."  I didn't realize it had been poorly reviewed, having won the Peabody Award and all.  It also garnered Golden Globes for both Blunt and Bill Nighy.  Miranda was brilliant, as always.  And though the two women only have two brief scenes together, they both do remarkable work.  It is truly a very moving film. Highly recommend it!

I've heard in a couple of

I've heard in a couple of places that Richardson is gay and just doesn't talk about her private life in interviews.  I wish I could remember where I read it but I remember there was a link in it to an interview with her using the 'I don't discuss my private life' line.  I tried to do a quick search and it says she was briefly married to Rowan Atkinson.

Anyway, I really don't know anything about her except that I've liked her in a few movies.  So, am I completely off base?  Anyone know for sure?

    Miranda the British Jodie?

I've never read anywhere that's she gay.
But she does seem to me a bit like our British version of Jodie Foster-ie never talks about her private life but definitely has 'that vibe' about her. But then again that could just be my wishful thinking!
Either way I think she is lush and she should definitely be in the Top 100 next year.

    Miranda Richardson!

Be still my beating heart! I think we can pretty categorically scotch the rumoured once-marriage to Rowan Atkinson. If that had happened, they'd have been one of those 80s "golden couples" like Ken and Emma. But she's played opposite him often enough so I can understand maybe someone getting that mixed up. According to IMDB she lives with 2 cats, two dogs and an axiotl. So I think we can pretty much say that the rumour that she's gay has legs...

Wasn't she also in something with Jennifer Saunders? Did she do a guest spot of F&S maybe? Or am I getting my quiet little daydreams mixed up with reality again?

But now she'll be playing Emily Blunt's mother? Hmm...interesting casting. I'll book my seat  now, thank you very much.

    Not a daydream

Tucksioni is right, Richardson was on Ab Fab and the Comic Strip a handful of times, but the better news is that she's in The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, a new Saunders show about a live therapy tv host. I haven't seen a release date but it's supposed to broadcast on BBC2 and BBC America. The press release says, "It’s Ab Fab meets The Larry Sanders Show with quite a bit of Ricki Lake and Oprah thrown in." Richardson plays her producer, who is "endlessly creative and hyperactive."

    Cheers!

I think she was in Ab Fab

I think she was in Ab Fab with Jennifer at some point and she was also part of the Comic Strip series (French and Saunders, Atkinson, Ade Edmonson Rik etc)
Our TV screens could certainly do with some Miranda magic right now!
What on earth is an axioti?! Perhaps a new code word for lesbian live in life partner?!
If anyone is on Facebook come join the Miranda Richardson appreciation society, go on you know you want to...Or let's start a new 'I spend far too much time at Afterellen.com group.

    sign me up!

An axolotl (sorry, I misspelled it) is a kind of salamander, I think. An ex-gf of mine used to have one and I was slightly freaked out by it. In fact, completely. I remember it was in a tank and that's about all I want to remember. Why would anyone keep something like that in their bedroom? Really. Not nice.  (Cue angry PMs from axolotl-owning, AE-reading lesbians...)

Aaanyway. MR was in Comic Strip? Now I'll have to go back through all my old Comic Strip vids and work out which one. Way to get me to waste a weekend girls!

    Prettiest Nose in the Kingdom

One of the best ever scenes in the Blackadder series, total comedy genius! All down to Ms Richardson's delivery of course.
Ah she could chop my nose off any day, well not quite but you know what I mean...

    Miranda as next Dr Who?!

Someone suggested this the other day and at first I thought no way. But the more I think about it.... especially if she kept Martha as her trusty companion.
