Naomi Watts: still pushing boundaries

Today marks the opening of Funny Games, writer-director Michael Haneke’s English-language remake of his own 1997 German-language film. I’d never seen the original, and I was quite hesitant about checking out the updated version — as much as I love horror movies, I’m really not into overly explicit violence and watching people suffer. Given that, going to watch a movie about a bourgeois family brutalized as a pair of psychopaths keep them captive in their summer home is something on my "to do" list that falls ... oh, somewhere between “scrub the floor” and “punch yourself in the face.” Earlier this week, though, I caught a screening. The “You really need to see it” urgings I received from a few trusted sources got me thinking about it, but in the end what got me to the theater was the fact that Funny Games stars Naomi Watts.

I’ll readily admit it — Watts is like kryptonite for me. My roommate is a film journalist and just this week had the opportunity to interview Naomi on the Funny Games press junket. While I was all cool as a cucumber on the outside with my “Wow, you’re so lucky I’m so jealous tell me if she’s really pretty I wonder how tall she is man you are soooo lucky,” on the inside I was ... well, let’s just say that I briefly considered buying some chloroform and a wig that looks like my roommate’s hair and going to the press conference in her stead. What? I didn’t DO it, sheesh. And I would have, like, done all the dishes for a week to make up for it. C’mon, man, it’s Naomi Watts!

I’ll see anything she’s in, just to see her. She’s displayed remarkable range in her career, and I honestly believe she’s one of the greatest working actresses today. Oh, and some people might kind of find her maybe a little bit attractive.

A word or two about Funny Games — it’s a harrowing cinematic experience, somewhat akin to seeing Dancer in the Dark or Requiem for A Dream. I appreciate it for what it is; the performances are amazing; I completely get the message; I kind of thought it was incredible; I can’t stop thinking about it ... and I never want to see it again. Funny Games explores the relationship audiences have with on-screen violence. It asks difficult questions, and filmmaker Haneke toys with your desires and expectations. Haneke himself says that he wouldn’t be surprised — or upset — if people walk out somewhere in the middle of it. I found it extremely difficult to sit through, but I’m glad I did. (For more on all that, see my review.)

Now let’s get back to Naomi Watts, who not only stars in Funny Games but acted as Executive Producer. Why would she want to be a part of such gut-wrenching cinema? I caught a bit of a morning TV program the other day because I flipped by and there was Naomi. Mind you, I find morning television to be somewhat akin to “torture porn” — I can’t stomach the stuff (mind you again, I loathe the term “torture porn,” but that’s a topic for another day). Anyway, one of the program hosts suggested that Watts needs to star in a lighthearted rom-com after assaulting our senses with Funny Games and last year’s violent crime thriller Eastern Promises. "Those movies are fine for other actresses," Naomi replied, "but they don’t interest me." Gasp! An actress who wants to be challenged by her work, who would rather push boundaries than worry about fame and box office? It’s like capturing a glimpse of Bigfoot. A really, really beautiful Bigfoot. Mmm ... Bigfoot ...

That said, she’s certainly not opposed to making mainstream films; she’s reprising the role made famous by Tippi Hedren in the upcoming remake of The Birds (which I will see — yes, just for her. Damn her powers!), and of course there’s King Kong (2005), a film that filled me with an odd desire to become a giant ape. I can’t imagine why.

It’s obvious that Watts is never going to stop appearing in edgy films. Several actress (most notably Jennifer Connelly) passed on the role of Rachel in The Ring. Naomi added her acting chops and the film became, in my opinion, one of the best remakes of an Asian horror film to appear on the market.

And then, of course, there’s Mulholland Dr. Watts turned in one of the best performances of the decade as both Betty and Diane in David Lynch’s mind-bending lesbian-flavored tour de force.

It’s my good fortune that she does make such interesting choices as an actress — I’ve been, at the least, intrigued by most everything she’s done. And I know that even if she made the blandest, most inane rom-com ever to be belched out by the most hackneyed fat-cat Hollywood producer, I’d be plopped in a theater seat opening weekend. It’s good to be aware of one’s own weaknesses, don’t you think?

    Loved her in Mulholland

Loved her in Mulholland Drive, loved her in 21 Grams, loved her in King Kong. She's one of the best actresses out there today, IMO... She has a very captivating on-screen presence. And she's hot. But her performance in MD, just... wow. She's really good.

    Naomi!!!

Naomi is amazing and I can not wait to see "Funny Games." Ever since "Muholland Drive," I've been scrambling to see every movie I can with her in it (except for the remake of "King Kong," which I don't think I could force myself to watch), and it's a huge plus if it happens to be a horror movie!

    I'm glad you're psyched...

...just keep in mind, I think Funny Games is more horrifying than it is horror. Maybe that'll make sense. :) Please post your thoughts here or somewhere after you've seen it- I'm interested in hearing people's reactions to this film.

    Remakes

Watts makes very interesting decisions when it comes to roles. What do you think of her penchant for remakes? Funny Games, King Kong, The Birds, The Ring, maybe even Mulholland Drive (a film about other films, anyway). I'm half-expecting her to play the second Mrs. de Winter in a remake of Rebecca soon, but maybe one Hitchcock remake will be her limit.
    finalgirl's picture

    Wow

I'm totally slapping my forehead V-8 style. I never noticed how many of her recent films are remakes, even though I talk about most of them all the time! Yes, I'm slow on the uptake.

I love The Ring. It was my introduction to Asian horror, and it completely floored me. I'm skeptical of The Birds, although from what I understand it's going to be simply another version of Du Maurier's story rather than a remake of Hitchcock's film. And if Naomi has faith in it, then I suppose I must as well.

I like your idea of casting her as Mrs de Winter. In the remake, she and Mrs Danvers will finally make out.

The role of Mrs Danvers will be played by me.

    Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley . . .

I've been waiting for THAT version of Rebecca for a long, long time. :)

    Eh, I'm skeptical

The original Funny Games is difficult to watch, and yet magnetically enticing with both the audience participation and the greater meaning. I saw the previews for the remake with Naomi and I nearly tripped on how identical the scenes were. I also made note that this is (as another reader pointed out) one of many remakes that she has done. I wonder what's goin on there? The original Funny Games was so original and daring but I'm terrified to see the remake because as finalgirl said, you watch this once, you don't want to watch again. I'm still hesitant for yet another American remake of a foreign classic (think Mostly Martha) but if anyone can pull it off, it'll be Naomi Watts. I've been awed since Mulholland Drive. Good article - The remake is back on my "maybe" list.
    finalgirl's picture

    From what I understand, the

From what I understand, the versions are almost identical. Apparently Haneke wanted to remake his film in the hopes that more Americans would see it and we'd all...I don't know, be taught a lesson, I suppose. The remake is supposedly 4 minutes longer and most likely not something you'd need to put yourself through again unless your curiosity simply gets the better of you.

The power of Naomi Watts compels you!

    I'm right there with you,

I'm right there with you, Watts is one of those actresses who is just completely captivating, and I would sit through anything with her in.  Plus, of course, you know there is something more than just close friendship between her and Nicole Kidman!

    so fabu

i heart naomi. one of my first major girl crushes: as jet girl, cute brunette mechanic, in tank girl (1995). the best thing about that movie! (the only good thing about that movie.)
    Antai's picture

    21 grams

Her performance in that movie is awesome, her emotions so real and heartbreaking, she completely transforms and shows the physical and emotional pain caused by a terrible loss.

I'm a huge fan of her work and of her looks too.. jeje

    sparklet's picture

    Where do I begin...

Both of the Rings were *ex-cel-lent* ("I'm not your fucking mommy!"). I don't know how many of you have seen Ellie Parker, but that's really good too. King Kong is one of my favorite movies. And, I find it hilarious how she thinks her boyfriend looks like a marsupial.... So basically, she's talented, funny, and -how could I forget- HOTT.
    charbonneau's picture

    Naomi Amazes

She is IMHO the best actress of her generation. 21 Grams made me lose my breath; Mulholland Drive is the only David Lynch film I can sit through; Eastern Promises is terrrific for the subtle chemistry between NW and Viggo. Ellie Parker is brilliant, and heck, I heart Tank Girl!

So why does she do remakes and horror movies? Just my guess, but its an indication of how poorly the studios/producers/movie moguls of today regard women actors. Its all guys, all violence, all the time, and what does that leave for our lovely ladies?? Screaming loudly for big bucks or playing the ditzy beautiful foil to some hairy, overweight nerdy guy who is supposed to be loveable. Gahhh!

My fantasy remake for Ms. Watts is something like Jezebel or Now Voyager...anything by Ms. Davis, only with more skin...;)

PS Crank Heart, definitely give King Kong a look; just ff through any scenes involving Jack Black and Adrian Brodie. Well worth it for the intense interaction between NW and Andy Cerkis, aka the Ape.

    DieWelle's picture

    well i saw the original

well i saw the original Funny Games while I was in Germany and i thought it was fantastic. so i'm interested to see just how good this remake is...and of course naomi doesn't hurt. ;]

    Mmmmmm Naomi...

Isn't she just great? Loved her In Mulholland Dr. and The Ring. She even made Eastern Promises bearable. Love her, love her, love her.

    liked her

in eastern promises - what a great film - also in mulholland drive, and in the ring, and in ellie parker, and in...on and on and on :D

A Funny Wierd Little Movie Called...

Tank Girl!!  Naomi totally rocked it out in the homage to the ComicGirl/PIxie Punk movement of the mid 90s. If you haven't seen this flick - it's totally worth the time. Totally lo-tech effects but a total Comic book fantasy!

    Love Naomi

since I saw her in "Tank Girl". And in everything else I saw after that. And I honestly think she has the best and most believable scream in Hollywood. Let it be in Mullholland Drive, the Ring or King Kong, it gets me everytime she screams, lol. I'm so gonna watch this movie when it's out here as well. One of the most talented actresses out there.

    ooh la la's picture

    loved her

in mullholland drive and 21 grams.  i read an article about funny games in the uk movie mag empire and thought it might be something id like to see.  u mention in ur review that its as traumatising as dancer in the dark and requiem for a dream and although i love both of those films - pheeewee im gonna have to brace myself i think.  the only fil ive seen by the same director as funny games was hidden which is a superb film, i would really recommend it.
    agyness's picture

    too scary

I like Naomi Watts but not enough to see a movie involving torture or whatever scary scenes there are in there. I have an active imagination already and the last thing I want is to fertilize it with imagery that can come back to haunt me when I'm alone. I never quite outgrew being scared of the dark, as embarrassing as that is to admit, sooo....

    ooh la la's picture

i am kinda scared to see it

i have bought dvds and then not watching them incase they are too scary or gory.  case in point - wolf creek
    agyness's picture

    good idea

"i have bought dvds and then not watching them in case they are too scary or gory."

That's a good method; I mean that way you know you have them in case they go off market, as they sometimes do, but don't have to see the creepy stuff until (or only if) you're ready. :--)

    ooh la la's picture

    lol

thanks for justifying my madness.  im the same with 28 weeks later.  i want to see it but hmmm leedle bit scared.

this is very off topic, but

this is very off topic, but I recently saw a hilariously bad horror flick (with the same person who introduced me to Shark Attack 3) that you should know about if you don't already. It's called Mega Snake-- your basic giant snake disaster with a backwoods flava.

also, I'd like to see Naomi in the imaginary and explosion-filled "Painted Veil 2: Revenge of the Veil."

    Brides of Christ

I love that series. i used to come home from school everyday and watch it, that's kind of sad.

Naomi's episode was the best i used to watch it more than the others and at the time i couldn't figure out why (ha!).

I also love that she starred in a lamb ad, where she gave up a date with Tom Cruise (before he was insane) so she could have her mum's lamb roast.  A few years later her best friend (Nicole), marrys Tom, small world.
