Styled Out: The women of the U.S. Open

The U.S. Open has been going on for quite a few weeks at this time and to be honest, I haven't been wildly enthusiastic about the whole thing. Yeah, yeah, I know — it's one of the most timeless sports that one could watch and all of that but it's sort of like golf for me — I don't have a whole lot of interest in watching people smack balls back and forth to one another across a court. Hot or not, my attention span doesn't have the capacity for that sort of thing.

My girlfriend on the other hand is pretty into it, so I've taken what I can about the girl's outfits and "made lemonade" if you will, because there's no arguing how good they look scampering around in those tennis skirts.

For those of you out there who are equally as enthusiastic about this whole sporting event, I don't even have to call Maria Sharapova to your attention, but I'm going to do it for the rest who may be living under a rock.

She is crazy attractive and has been getting props left and right for her clothing choices, and with excellent reason — she essentially started a new trend in tennis by wearing day and night ensembles for her tournament matches.

Unreal. Just when I thought there couldn't be anything I could find to love in tennis tournaments, here she was. I am so digging on her color combination choices, too. Basically the girl has got it going on, seeing as how she's currently the face for designer Cole Haan.

The latest "phenom" (as my GF calls her) is 17-year-old Melanie Oudin, and this gal is not only shaping up to be the next athletic sensation, she would appear to have a bit of taste, too.

Not to rub salt in any wounds or anything, but she kinda-sorta beat Sharapova on Sunday, too. Her leg was bandaged up but she still managed to smoke the court in a head to toe Adidas get-up that was iced with a pair of technicolor sneakers (my fave, duh). Give me another year, I might have something dirty to say but until then, mum's the word on this new American sweetheart.

The most awesome/biggest burn is that both Maria and next on my list, Nadia Petrova have already been taken out of the running due to her underage hand.

Petrova is pretty much known amongst lady lovers as having amazing, defined arms and legs which in turn highlight what she's wearing on the court. Note the hottest red on white Lacoste choice for her tennis gear, an original choice and actually kind of forward. In my opinion, the "preppy" look is coming back, if not mildly. Every hipster I know is mocking it in some form. If you're going to do it though, go for something that's classically refined and respected like the brand Nadia chose, not Abercrombie.

I know there are a bunch of you who are probably itching to pick up a racket after all the hype of the Open, so do it with style. Any place we should know about to pick up duds to sweat (attractively) in?

    What?

I don't understand anyone wanting to discuss Petrova in any style article. Really, Petrova, really?! That's like discussing Sveta.

As for fashions, its all been pretty boring at the USO this year although I like Wickmayer's short shorts. (Yet another Chinese brand getting into Women's tennis, well at least they are better than boring Addidas).

    sony's picture

    Wickmayer

Watching her match against Bondarenko right now - ure right about the shorts.hmm..

Dont know why but i think those shorts are way more hotter than those boring skirts...

    likebuttah's picture

    Agreed

Petrova? Arm definition? uh where? Her skirt this year was so short it was distasteful. And i'm usually not one to complain about short skirts...  But really. um no.

Hotties on the women's tour: Here's a quick shortlist:

    • See Ana Ivanovic -below.
    • Or for hot arms: Hello Williams sisters much?
    • The Bondarenko sisters are pretty cute too.
    • Sorana Cirstea - gorgeous
    • Dementieva is a BRICK HOUSE. Okay here's a pic for her...
    Yeah - Petrova? Um no.

Sorana is just so damn adorable. She's my favourite tennis hottie of the moment.

Elena has one of the best bodies on the tour no doubt.

Must you be so very rude....if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything.
    oscartg's picture

    And your

And your going to get your message deleted for personal insults.

    jumper23's picture

    and...

and you're still going to be mean. i understand everyone has different ideas of what is attractive and what is not. why not say something like, "i don't think she is good looking at all." or maybe, "she just doesn't do it for me." saying she makes you wanna throw up? yeah... kinda mean. i'll not pass judgement on your intelligence though. obviously, it's impossible to tell from just one post.

    Still Reported

You'll still be reported and deleted.

[Moderator: Commenting that someone is being rude is not a personal insult.  But let's let the Moderators decide whether or not someone's account is to be actioned, okay?]

    jumper23's picture

    whoa...

what am I being reported for? i was trying to be nice and explain my point of view.

    Persona insults

    Personal Insults.
    skyocence's picture

Well you do get more bees with honey...

...I agree with Jumper there too.  There are kinder ways to get your message across.  Oscar, your way was quite distasteful, and seems somewhat immature as well.

I am hoping that you realise how it came across and probably be more respectful in future.

Actually, I am not as attracted to Serena as I use to be - I don't much care for the weave, but I do admire her physique; especially when she looked a bit softer.  Her skill is still remarkable though...love that :)

Perhaps I need to start watching more tennis cause I'm missing all the hotties; and this Oudin girl surprised me too.

    brackishtea's picture

    I've must have missed it...

Or you are confusing the two posters?

jumper23 said nothing to personally insult you other than calling you mean in regards to what was said about Serena Williams.

However, what you said about Serena amoung other things was strong and on the hateful side, imo; given this is a public/private forum they called you out on it (rightly so, again, imo). Granted vannie did it in a way I would have not done it, jumper23 does not deserve to be reported on "personal attacks."

The almighty Harpy or the other moderators will have the final say.

Besides I get that you *hate* Serena with the passion of a thousand suns but can we be a civil about it?

    Pretty please?

ON topic: I never thought too much about the fashion in Women's tennis. I focused on their ability to play and and if I could ever be that good.

P.S: In the near future you catch me saying something as similar to what you said about Serena Williams (or worse) in the furture about any celebrity, please call me out on it.

        Anna Ivanovic

    Photobucket

Anna Ivanovic usually has pretty outfits on, and I find her way more attractive than Sharapova. What bugs me about the latter is her loud, unnecessary, and unbeatable grunts. Maybe Ivanovic lets out a little 'Heidi' accompanied by a fist pump, and a few grunts, but they're nowhere near as annoying. Hmm..another favorite would be Nicole Vaidisova, who has been having a very unsuccessful year. Stepanek ruined her life. Nicole is classy and wears Reebok apparel. I find her subtle immaturity on court very cute.

Nicole began playing professionally at age 15, and won six grand slams. Since 2008, her results have benen going downhill, although he she got to the wimbledon quarterfinals.

    JCD's picture

    ???

Nicole Vaidisova? Vaidisova has 6 WTA Tour singles titles, 2 ITF singles titles, no doubles titles at all, that was it. No GS far and wide.

I must admit though I don't watch tennis for the fashion. I watch it for the sport that it is and, let's be honest, those hot female athletic bodies (Sam Stosur for example *drools*; love the way that woman moves on court).

    Jaded4204's picture

    No disrespect.. but Ana is

No disrespect.. but Ana is my favorite player that I have spent many of hours happy and not happy watching over the last 4 years.. and I know that  in the pic above is NOT Ivanovic.
    likebuttah's picture

    Grunts aside

Ana Ivanovic - in real life and on court, um GORGEOUS. She may grunt, but her and Sharapova have the shots to back it up. And though sponsored by adidas, i think this picture might help you like the sport a bit more...

    Ana Ivanovic

    mamma viraginis's picture

    Ana Ivanovic

Most definitely. It's great to see the lighter-touch players getting back into the women's game; much more interesting to watch. I miss Martina Hingis, though; she had a beautiful game style.

Oh, and thank you for that picture. My morning is vastly improved :)

    page1of1's picture

    Agree with JCD

If you're talking about arms, Sam Stosur's your girl! I like the contrast that she has from her on court persona vs. real life.

Shame on AE For Publishing This

I am really disappointed to read this pointless article on a respected web site I love. These women are professional athletes and all the time you continue to talk about them as if they are just "eye candy" you diminish the hard work and effort they put in to being sports women.

The BBC did something similar this year on their commentary of Wimbledon, by comparing the female tennis players to birds in the garden (a pointless analogy of UK animal programme). I complained in the strongest fashion to the BBC accusing them of institutional sexism and now I  find my favourite "pro-women" website doing the same thing.

All the time we keep ignoring the athletic achievements of these women and simply comment on their attractiveness (or otherwise) we play into the hands of the society we live in that says women are there to be looked at and not taken seriously.

I think the author of this article should seriously consider re-writing it. I also think ALL the people who've added equally fatuous remarks about how the tennis players look should think again - it wasn't so long ago that women weren't allowed to play tennis ... vote ... think ... - this is fine line that shouldn't have been crossed.

    JCD's picture

    This constant fashion-promo

This constant fashion-promo going on on the WTA Tour annoys me as well.

I don't think though there's anything wrong with thinking certain athletes (whatever your taste) are hot. To me personally the sexiest players are those who I also most respect and appreciate as athletes.

    Sharapova...

Sharapova can pull off whatever she wants... she had 21 double faults and still looked good.

    Tifanix's picture

    I hate Sharapova

Women tennis just isn't the same without Martina Hingis...

    JCD's picture

    Frankly...

I can't stand neither Sharapova nor Hingis... baseline bashers. *ugh*

I do make an exception for Clijsters though - she's a baseline basher as well, but her personality is great. :-)
    Tifanix's picture

    but..

what's wrong with being a baseline basher? Hingis was an outstanding player at any place of the court ....seeing Clijsters again just makes me miss her more... oh well.

I don't like Sharapova and all her "moldel" shit, she's not even that much pretty IMO.

    JCD's picture

    Generally...

nothing's wrong with that. I just have a problem with the fact, that the tour is being overtaken by those cookie-cutter players who all have the exact same playing style (and to a big part the Bollettieri Academy is to blame for that). The variety and skill have gone fishin' in favour of uniformed playing styles. If Sharapova retires there are still dozens of others who play exactly the same as she does, if for example Mauresmo retires there's no one left like that. :-(
    meatisadelicacy's picture

    I miss Martina too!

I was lucky enough to see her at the German Open three years ago.  I was wandering around and peaked over the fence to see who was practicing, and BAM! There was little Martina Hingis and her crazy mother. I gasped like a gay man at a Cher concert. She was totally an evil genius - no one plans ahead and constructs points the way Martina did. And I sorta hate 'pova too.

    Tifanix's picture

    OMG

You saw Martina!?...i'm so jealous! lol but really she was an amazing player she played with intelligence and had all the shots ...and she's cute as hell imo :)

    Paraphase's picture

    Hingis is a homophobe. I

Hingis is a homophobe. I don't care how good she was I would never throw my support her way.

    JCD's picture

    I second that.

I can respect her as a player, but... that was it. Momo seems to have forgiven her, but I haven't. *mad*
    Steph's picture

    Me too!

I'm usually a pretty placid person, but if I had Hing-ass (sorry, just had to) in front of me, I'd kick her butt for Amelie, Tzipi and every other out tennis pro.

    Then again, sorry, Ame. :)

I think Hingis said a lot of

I think Hingis said a lot of dumb shit in her career (getting her into plenty of trouble), which is kinda part of her charm.

As far as Mauresmo is concerned, I will never forgive Justine FUCKING Henin for defaulting in the final of the Australian Open.  That was far worse in my opinion than Hingis' homophobic comments.

    fashionable tennis wear?

I love to watch tennis, but when have women's tennis outfits looked "stylish"?  Even when they try to 'jazz' them up it's more humorous than appealing.... Sorry but the only tennis outfit style that works for me are the styles that are the simplist (no frills), then you can enjoy the sport and not wonder what was going through a player or sports fashion designer's mind.....that said I can think of some way cooler ideas, but they would be very different from anything I've seen, ever! Hmmm, maybe I should start designing women's tennis wear.... LOL....

    What about Dinara?

Am I the only one who totally thinks Dinara is a hottie?  I stayed up all night and drove from Chicago to Cincinatti at the spur of the moment to see her in action.  DAMN.  What a stud.  Just me?

    As a self-proclaimed "Tennis

As a self-proclaimed "Tennis Junkie" I'm usually into the "fashion" of the US Open (and all the other Grand Slams), but for some reason this year there doesn't seem to be as much as usual. I'm guessing it's because so many of the top players got upset in the first week. Personally, I'm really excited about Clijster's return. Regarding style...it's kinda funny b/c for me it's all about Rafa Nadal!!! I still can't get over the fact that he cut his hair, wears not only a shirt with sleeves, but a shirt with a collar and reg. shorts..

    Champagne anyone?

No one is mentioning Champagne Tennis Dresses? Is anyone paying attention?

Okay, Melanie Oudin (Way to get as far as the quarter-finals! Yay! The world will be watching you now!) got beat in straight sets tonight, wearing the coolest form of wrap-around skirt and two-tone-slogan shoes...

Why no mention of Caroline Wozniacki's friggin' Champagne Tennis Frock?

Now. Try getting up every day @ 6 am since age 9 or earlier, and practicing 4 to 6 hours a day. 5 days a week.

Congratulations to both Melanie and Caroline for their remarkable accomplishments, and all women who compete on a World Class level.

They should all get free foxy athletic apparel.

    lefunko's picture

    i know!

i was going to say the same thing.  her outfit is the worst.

my crush of the Open was Li Na.  total fox.

it was awesome Oudin got this far.  now i'm routing for Clisters.

    Jaded4204's picture

    Perfect

Thought what you said was perfect.. Out of everyone this year playing in the US open thought that Caroline Woz DEF had the best outfit.. shit was hot.. I am personally hoping she wins it all.. I am from where Oudin is from Marietta GA and shit has been across the news like crazy,  loved it.. but I am a big time tennis fan.. and i HATE the william sisterss.. only cause they always freakin win im over that shit. i could go on forever how i wanted pennetta and bonderanko to win and how IVANOVIC made me the biggest fan of tennis in the world over the last two years.. but ill save it for another post.. CARO WoznaK~ all the way now! F U serena! SUCK IT~

Life in the south isnt that bad thank Oudin

Ok so being a lesbian in GA isn't hard enough.. Melanie is from my home town of Marietta. I just found out tonight.. courtsey she was playing primetime that one of my friends little brothers is dating her cousin! Classic.. I live in Marietta where her family lives at! I was just thinking to myself the other day.. how am I going to work out a meeting with her.. golden its worked out.. I love tennis.. I am a HARDCORE unrealistic ANA IVANOVIC fan but MELANIE makes me go AMERICAN all the way.. had a full out party for her at my house tonight!... sad it didnt go our way.. its all good! I LOVE THE WTA and Oudin is a force to be reckon with!

    Sam Stosur

I might be biased cause I'm completely obsessed with Sam but I reckon her outfit was pretty bloody amazing! Yeah tons of other girls wore the same Lacoste outfit but she looked the best in it. And her arms...you want someone with nice arms? Well, here's Sammy :)

You need to watch her matches though to see how muscular she really is. Pictures don't do her justice.

    Samsunglassesla

Plus, she's a cutie and might actually be family ;)

    sunsetsandcarcrashes's picture

    Of course ;)

You know me....I'd never miss out on a chance to talk about Sammy. Just wait till the Aussie Open, I'll go to every single tennis related thread there is and annoy everyone with my obsession with Sam :P.

Oh and it's a little worrying that I've seen all the pics you've posted. Maybe I do search for her pics a bit too much ;).

    JCD's picture

    ^^

    Let's annoy them together. ;-)
I think we both search for them a bit too much. ;-))

Slightly different from my normal 'type'

But I LOVE Amelie Mauresmo, I have a complete and utter infatuation for her even if she is French :P She hasn't been playing well lately though :( But I still love her! And shes openly gay, something that must have taken a lot of courage, esp to have done it so early on both age wise and carrer wise! Love her
    Steph's picture

    You, too? :D

I am so unbelievably obsessed with the Amelie. She's such a goddess and would probably get majorly freaked out if she met me, but seriously, the woman is hot. And I'm hoping she won't retire at the end of the season! She cannot! :)
