Styled Out: Sandal wars

Last week marked an incredibly important milestone on the path for true warm weather (drum roll please): I wore sandals to brunch.

I know, I know, it may not seem that impressive to you but that usually signals the end of my legs being bound in tights every time I step out of the house.

Sandals are yet another area of fashion chock full of faux pas, with hordes of horrifying options. Sometimes I can’t even believe people actually paid money for the stuff they’re wearing. Even stars like Lindsay Lohan (they’re just like US!) can be at fault. Here she is sporting last season’s “Gladiator” style:

Now, there are many things wrong going on in that photograph but the sandals are they the icing on that bag-lady type outfit. This season, they’re trying to hang on, and stores like Target and K-Mart are trying to live out the legacy “fashionably late,” so just proceed with caution.

I shamelessly love flip-flops and know very few lady lovin’ ladies who don’t. They are the easiest things to throw on and it’s really hard to go wrong with these kicks. They come in every color of the rainbow (a plus for Pride) and are so affordable, everyone can have a few pairs to wear all summer long.

I love going to Old Navy for certain basics, and this is one of them. I’m never at a loss for variety, size or shade at ON, and everything is under $30, which means I can get a few pairs. Beware their version of Gladiator as well.

My favorite and reasonably priced find so far has been the Hurricane Sandal by Ecote. These are easily found at Urban Outfitters and online. Fabulously classic and wonderfully androgynous, these babies come in colors like purple, tan, orange and gold.

I think that this style could be easily dressed up with some linen or easily dressed down with denim shorts and a T-shirt. For under $40, these sandals are a great investment for everything you end up doing in the lazy days of summer.

One last bit of advice before you go wild running up your credit card with all kinds of warm weather wears: Get a pedicure! Butch, femme, trans, andro — they can put on clear polish if you prefer, but take care of those tootsies. It’s not strictly an issue of being well groomed; it’s for your overall health.

Will your toes be showing this season?

    gotta love this summer!

    HEY...i like gladiators!

well, i think sandals are a life savior really. i can now look fashionable without abusing my feet, im ultra sensitive about my feet and will not tolerate anything that gives me the slightest discomfort.

hope sandals hang around for a looong loooooooong time.

    Shoes... almost my favorite thing

My toes will show. I'm wearing these to cover the Red Carpet for AfterEllen and AfterElton at the GLAAD Media Awards here in San Francisco this weekend:

And yes, I'll be wearing them even if it's COLD AND FOGGY AND RAINING.

    gladiators

I don't think these will ever get old. I mean my mom was like she even wore these in high school in the 80s. :D

    funny, yet not surprised

the last sandal are known as guaraches and originate from mexico. who would of thought UO would pick up the style and it'd be so fashion forward.

rather than spend $40 on a pair that look really flimsy, you should just head out to your local mexican supermarket, i'm sure they'd have a pair for a lot less.

    Eqypt Shoes!

It never occured to me that they are gladiators. I call them my Egypt Shoes. It's a shame they're are going out of style. They are the most comfortable sandals I own...

Oh how I love my sandals.

Being Hawaiian and living in Arizona means you get to wear the year round. lol. I am a huge fan of Rainbows Sandals. They are leather flip-flops that come in many colors. They do cost around $45, but they are under warranty for the life of the shoe. Like last summer, I got stuck and they came undone and I got a new pair and all I had to pay was the s&h. But when I feel like "dressing up" my jean shorts and top, I go for strappy sandals :)

p.s. I don't care how you define yourself. Pedicures are lifes little treasures and Everyone should get them.

    I hate flip flops

Flip flops are just like having something stuck to the bottom of your foot, not very securely I might add. My feet just feel naked in on flip flops. + them being in between my toes creeps me out, I even manged to cut in between my toes wearing them once.

If I need to wear sandals I either wear a nice girly pair of heels or I go all out dyke with comfy flat sandals (and wait for my faggot friends to mock me).

Dr martens make some comfy sandals:

    thongs gotta love them

im australian and almost every single australian i know owns a pair of thongs. they are simple enough to wear around the house, practicale enough to wear to the beach and can look good enough to wear out

this is the bit i find funny. we call them thongs but almost every where else in the world if i said that i was wearing thongs on my feet, i would get some very stange looks. why do we aussies (and maybe some other counrties, not to sure tho) call them thongs? y not have a universal name like flip-flops, even tho that is a very weird name!!

love is like oxygen, if you get too much you too get high, if you dont get enough then your gonna die

    funny story

well i gotta share an aussie flipflop/thong story that happened to me last summer on a visit.

i was at a shop and went up to the sales guy and asked him if they have flip flops in this design and whatever and he went:

    salesguy: thongs?

me: *stares*...uh...no...flip flops, you know...you wear on your feet.

    salesguy: yah, thongs.

    me: no dude..no...FLIP...FLOPS!

salesguy: we call them thongs here.

me: why would you do such a thing?! 0_o

and yes he gave me a funny look after that.
