Styled Out: On the same PageIf I asked my friends what they requested St. Nick deliver this year, the answer might be Ellen Page coming out on the cover of People magazine. Ellen is a tricky one because, as a lesbian collective, I think all of us are sort of holding are breath and hoping that she is a gay. I, for one, am constantly on the lookout for clues to direct us one way or another, and she certainly isn’t making it very easy for me.
After searching Google images for our young vixen to cite this very thought, I found the andro to femme ratio was nearly 50/50. This isn’t a mathematically derived percentage, but you get the picture. She dresses androgynously quite a bit, choosing a nice pair of jeans, a blazer and a button-down over a skirt or dress, unless the occasion calls for it (i.e. the Oscars).
I almost thought she was wearing a Tegan and Sara shirt under that vest. (It's Kimya Dawson — close enough.) At any rate, a simple T underneath a vest is a great layered look.
This all-black ensemble? If that isn’t a tip from Graham in But I’m a Cheerleader, I’m not really sure what is.
What's your favorite Ellen Page look? Do you dress similarly? Submitted by on December 24, 2008 - 12:00pm. |

I knew that you'd eventually write a column about Ellen's awesome sense of style. I've never seen her not look amazing.
One of my favorites is what she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards last year:
I like the simple jeans
I like the simple jeans a tee look. So sexy.

Why didn't Ilene think of this?
Seriously, she could be Shane's little sister.

Wow
not a fan
One of these things...
Some say you can sort of tell someone's sexual orientation by the way they dress
If I were the type of person to stereotype people by the way they dressed...and I'm not
BUT, if I were, Ellen kind of stands out in this pic.
down
i think she actually stands down in that picture haha she is so tiny!!! but I just love her and although I Dont like to judge I'm sorry but she is just too gay not to be, just as kirsten stewart and they both have great sense of style, I suffer when I try to choose between them.
so I`ll just love them both =) sounds fair to me.
Take a sad song and make it better
hmm..
I don't like labeling either, but they all stand out to me, especially the tall ones, or maybe that's cause I like em' tall and the dress's aren't black. In my experience, if she's not wearing the little black dress, there's a slight chance that she's a bisexual.
Yuck! The outfit she's
Yuck! The outfit she's wearing is very old-ladyish...O__O
i think
Lol
didn't she do that sketch where she played a lesbian on mad tv and that was her kind of coming out thing??
or was that just an ordinary sketch
if so that is very dissapointing, as she is hot!

So In Love with her!
i LOVE her
Ever since X-Men I've been totally in love with her. I also hope she's gay and someday when she's one of the most powerful women in entertainment she'll come out. Just a dream xD
Great pictures!!!
Ellen Page is beautiful. I
Ellen Page is beautiful. I like the first pic alot

Ellen Page's look.
Yes, we probably would be very dissapointed if Ellen (eventually) turns out the be straight. But in our hearts, she'll always just be Ellen. That unique and outstandingly funny brown-eyed/dark-haired Canadian young-actress.
But it would make life just so much easier if it turns out that miss Page is gay. So we can finally say "See, I knew it all the way." Our gay-dar works very well.

A friend of mine saw her
A friend of mine saw her dressed in jeans and hoodie in Halifax, NS, a few weeks ago. I like that look on Ellen, whereas my friend prefers to see Ellen all dressed up.
Jeans, tee, vest or hoodie... Looks like Ellen dresses similar to me, eh.

Crush Central
I find her so cute in this picture. It is my favorite look of hers. I am in the unique position of being genderqueer, having a boyish appearance myself, and to be attracted to androgynous, tomboy looking women. So I like her with the shorter hair, in a swoon type of way.
Her orientation is none of my business, unless I actually get to meet her, and I would love that. I am hoping that she is genderqueer like me because it would bring some visibility to this way of experiencing the world. Genderqueer is feling both male and female in one's gender. I have tred to wear men's underwear but have found it anatomically not comfortable. I like the mixture of male and female dressing styles.
Wow.
OK
looking at the pic above...
I'm just saying. I mean, really...
Maybe it's my ignorance. Are more straight women abolishing gender roles and throwing off any semblance of feminine fashion?
I have no problem with women throwing away all gender social constructs...fight the power
But, do straight women really dress like this?
I mean honestly, If I saw her out like that, I would have no problem flirting with her, trying to get her number
because NO ONE would be able to tell me that she was straight. I'd laugh in their face.
Or does every woman want to look like Zac Efron?
there are straight tomboys...
Lots of straight women dress like tomboys. Just not many in Hollywood, where extreme femininity is so highly regarded. Even most of the lesbians in Hollywood dress femme. Ellen Degeneres is like the only one that doesn't and even she had to femme up her look a little bit.
My guess is that Ellen Page gets away with this because being 'offbeat' and 'quirky' and all those other words always attached to her are so hugely part of her appeal. She's the anti-starlet, so the tomboyish look is just another aspect that makes her different and why people like her. Whereas if some blonde, Paris Hilton type started popping up like that, people would question her.
Think about how Avril Lavigne was embraced when she first came out for wearing what we all saw as a pretty dyketastic look. She femmed up eventually though. I hope Ellen doesn't go that way.
And remember how young she is. Like in that above photo, I think it was her first appearance at Sundance, at like 16. She might not want to do the glam thing yet. Which I'm happy about it.
she totally looks like she
she totally looks like she could be Zac's little brother in that picture...i think it's an old one, maybe?
but regardless.. totally gay. I would be absolutely blown away if it turns out she's straight.
I get tomboy
But I guess I preceive a difference between tomboy and... boi.
I know there are bgirls, skaters or others who aren't really femme; but I associate their dress with a certain counter-culture.
I'm assuming it's the same outfit from 2005 (hard candy)
Yeah, I'm still feeling the gay.
more than clothes
Can't see those pics, but I know what you mean. Ellen is totally sporting the current lesbian hipster look. In fact, she seemed to be wearing it like a year before the rest of us started. It's very Tegan and Sara indie masculine chic, all those plaid fitted shirts and vests.
Maybe it's a Canadian thing? I don't know what dykes are wearing in the States. The hipster look is taking over lesbian scene kids here in Alberta (which is not exactly a trendsetting region), but that's mostly because they're hipsters first and lesbians second. Yes, a girl dressed like Ellen is likely to be a lesbian. But it's only like a 65 percent chance, leaving a lot of room for error.
Personally, yeah I think Ellen is probably gay. But that's a lot of things, the roles she takes, her attitude, her musical tastes and just her overall vibe. Not her clothes. A closeted celebrity is not likely to be giving away huge hints in their clothing, it's too obvious. Of course, perhaps no one has asked?

the mystery of the pics that only I can see... I know why it happened... they're pics from her IMDB

Graham and Ellen? Swoon!
Mention of Graham from But I'm A Cheerleader in conjunction with photos of Ellen Page? My brain ceased to function for a good while there. Hot overload.
I adore the way Ellen Page dresses. It's tomboyish but stylish and really suits her.
She also sets off my gaydar like mad, but that's a separate issue: I've known girls who dress like Ellen who don't strike me as queer at all. It's kind of intangible (maybe it's wishful thinking), and all the pictures put forward as "evidence" are fairly irrelevant. Very pleasing, but irrelevant.
I personally like the "Patti Smith" shot

(Sorry, for some reason I'm not able to upload the pic)
straight women don't wear
boy's briefs, however hipsterish they are. That's my cut and dried evidence of Ellen's at- least-bisexual orientation.
You can bet that in Hollywood, she's getting pressure from all sides to femme up. If she keeps resisting, she's on our side.
And someone mentioned Avril Lavigne. PLEASE do not mention her in the same breath as Ellen Page. Avril's just a poser, who happened to catch a wave of interest when she started out. She has not matured in her song writing or singing since. She's be history in a few years. Her last album sounded like she was still a high school kid; when she's now a married woman in her 20's. PLUEEEZE!
that was me
Did you even read what I said? I'm not saying they have anything in common, Ellen has way more artistic credibility.
But, the tomboys, gay or straight, of the world are very happy to embrace someone who comes along and eskews femininity a little bit.
love her style
i love that look she has in the first photo!
the cute girlie blouse, boy briefs, and low rise jeans = win.
also, i think she should totally get with michael cera...i mean if she and i can't get together...heh :P
I also love her
I also love her look in the first photo, it's just amazing! And yes, in some of the pics, she dresses a lot like me. So, Ellen, confess!!
I'm also inclined to think that she's at least bisexual. I don't know, I would also hit on her if I find her out wearing that kind of clothes :D
she's adorable

I love Ellen!!!
tough call...
... i still cant decide if i think ellen's hot. mostly because she just looks SO young. but i do dig her style (minus that awful black on black getup - way too 90s!), and the girl certainly knows how to rock the lezzie haircut. it'd be pretty awesome if she were gay, but im not sure i buy it (though if she were selling, i guess id get in line!). yeah, she's a tomboy and quirky and way above all the stupid drama most starlets go for, but she's also canadian and is serious about acting and has done some pretty intense stuff. she could be gay, but she could also just be your friendly neighborhood indie chick - totally androgynous and totally adorable.

totally cute
I live in halifax and when Ellen is around town or at the bars.. shes usually in skinnys and a t. shes got a great sence of style... and shes super cute.
I love her style. Simple
I love her style. Simple and amazing.
AND seriously, she has to be a lesbian or my gaydar broke :]
But for now, since she isn't out yet, it's good enough that she is playing one in her new movie.
Hip Hop means never having to say `I love you´.
Ok, so I may be attacked
Ok, so I may be attacked for this:
Is it just me, or did anyone else not like the movie Juno? IMHO, I hated it. Only movie I've ever seen Ellen Page in though, so, that could be why I don't really like her...however I think she's a decent actress and very pretty.
As for her style, I think its awful. Not really into the "indie" style; its been tired out and really isn't as unique and non-conformist as it seemed before. I think she could put a liiiittle more effort into red-carpet outfits as well...
Oh, and I'd bet anything she's a lesbian xP
Me too!
Lesbian Expectations
It's my pet theory that the
It's my pet theory that the big tadoo over Juno is sad, bc it's all about many, many people's expectations of women/gender role issues, and how the character befuddles them in an almost but not quite gay way. Palatable without being truly offensive, almost shocking but the audience doesn't quite get the queer vibes. It makes me sad, truly.
Me, I wear boys undies too. Ellen gives me big vibes, I have a lot of fondness for her. I can't help but see a young queer person there.
