Styled Out: Drew Barrymore as an icon

Bisexual actress Drew Barrymore can be found staring back at you at almost every check out line and magazine stand this month — she landed the cover of W, which is a huge deal. Only the most stylish of fashionistas and happening of starlettes are chosen to grace the cover of this particular publication, and Drew’s excellent taste and buzz-worthy performance and direction in and of Grey Gardens certainly earned her that.

Drew’s style has evolved enormously through the decades and we’ve had a front row seat, as she is no rookie when it comes to being in the tabloids. Even when she was busy hittin’ the bottle in her pre-teen years, she was still a total fashion plate.

The thing I love most about Drew is that she can just as easily be the “jeans and a T-shirt” girl as she can take a red carpet and make it call her mama. To me, this fluidity and comfort within oneself is totally envious. I love getting dressed up but it’s definitely a challenge for me to feel like myself- it never quite happens until I’m pulling my fake eyelashes off at the end of the night. Check out this gown in the most perfect shade of chartreuse:

It’s cool too, because sometimes celebrities have a tendency to put on a front, and not so with Ms. Barrymore. At the risk of sounding too trite or like Drew’s World’s Biggest Fan, she pretty much awesome — her personality shines right through anything she wears.

I’ve always been a fan of her use of denim. Jeans are one of those things that high-profile style fanatics are either super particular about or steer clear of. Drew is fearless and fun with her clothes. Barrymore has been rumored to let her dog, Flossie have a go at her jeans and give them a really “un-calculated” look. Wow. Even when she was a little person in the era of E.T. she was sporting tiny jean jackets.

Thud, thud. Thud, thud. That’s the sound my heart makes when I think about how awesome Drew looks, all sultry-like in her latest photo shoot. Nevermind she hasn’t publically been with a girl in quite some time.

Do you dig Drew's style?

    Debbie Harry Revisited

I love the W spread. It's very Debbie Harry.

Drew is just all around likable. She's got such an infectiuos upbeat personality. I don't think I've ever seen her unhappy. Even when the paps follow her, she's always smiling and in a good mood. Good for her.

Lindsay should take a cue from Drew. She might learn something.

    LOVE her!

Drew was my first crush ever. I still have a bunch of silly collages of pictures of her that I made when I was a tween. Just saw her in HBO's Grey Gardens and my love for her is renewed.

    Twiggy lips

I adore Drew, but beige lipstick doesn't look good on anyone, even her. Are they trying to make Drew look like a weird Twiggy clone? Sigh, is anyone out there old enough to know who Twiggy was?

    YEP! :)

Twiggy (born Lesley Hornby; 19 September 1949) the English model, actress, and singer.
Big eyes, long eyelashes, waifish build, and often considered one of the most famous models of all time.

A high fashion mod icon, with that signature androgynous hair cut.

Yep she is known! 23 but I have felt her presence in my life as a pop culture aware person.

Maybe they were going for the high fashion mod look? I think of Drew as more of a sun kissed California girl.

    Drewboo

Her fashion sense is somewhere between Kate Winslet and Lindsay Lohan, with a bit of Americana thrown in. It works.

An if she does happen to be dating EP, this is only icing on the cake. If not...hey, at least they have similar taste in shoes.

i have never been able to

i have never been able to tolerate her voice.  it makes me crazy..... but I think her make-up looks gorgeous in that first photo.  How'd she do that?

    "Nevermind she hasn’t

"Nevermind she hasn’t publically been with a girl in quite some time."

Has she ever been in a publical relationship with another woman? Must have missed that. I've read that she refers to herself as bisexual before though.

    Mhm.

She had a 'thing' with Jane Pratt (creator of Jane Magazine) in the 90s. I think Jane outed her in an interview, and Drew mentioned dating women a short while after that.

She's buddy/buddy with Ellen Page now. Makes one wonder...

its odd cus when i got my first girl crush on Neve Campbell in Scream 3 i was a bit uneasy about it. Scream 1 was then on TV (dumb order to show them or what!?) and I saw her Drew (with blonde hair) and was like, oh I totally don't like her in that way, or other girls perhaps *kids self* but actually, seeing her in Donny Darko, particularly when she screams expletives in anger, and now other things. she is so attractive..

Wow, one the first big girl crushes I had was on Courteney Cox's character Gale Weathers! Those were my favourite movies.

    Hmm

I don't know, I adored Drew Barrymore when I was younger.
Her struggles, her beauty, her triumphs, etc.

I don't know, I stil think she is gorgeous and a fine actress but she doesn't make my heart go a flutter like she did when I was younger.

Meh, tastes change but Drew stays lovely.

    Grey Gardens

I just finished watching Grey Gardens.  Interesting story.  Drew Barrymore did a marvelous job and I can definitely see her earning an Emmy nomination.

She was on Ellen last week talking about the movie and how the director was hesitant to give her the role because she's never really played a serious role like this.  She said she asked him to give her a chance.  I'm glad he did because she was wonderful.

    photoshopped?

Has Drew been photoshopped in this cover photo within an inch of her life? Or is that a silly question to ask these days.  I don't quite recognise her. I like her, but can't stand the usual thinification of women on covers.
    ahill's picture

    I thought the same thing

she looks so different on the cover.  But I hear she went underground for her role in Grey Gardens.  Stopped seeing her friends and worked with a voice coach for 3 months.  Must have done some very serious body work, too.  I get W for free and flip through it in about 5 minutes because it seems like all it is is super skinny 16 year olds wearing tons of eye makeup.

    Yeah, It's as if...

They wanted Gweneth Paltrow or Cameron Diaz, but had to make do with Drew. It's awful. Where are Drew's famously pouty and slightly askewed lips?

    OMG..

This brings me back to my days of being a perverted, frisky 12/13 year old drooling over her. *ahem* I swear I'm not like that with her anymore!
