Styled Out: Shoes that are cute to boot

My girlfriend, Rachel, went on a little bit of a shoe binge this week. She sent me links to boots via instant messenger, daydreaming about different versions of sneakers that were “murdered out” (i.e., entirely black). We eventually ended up at the Puma store after marching in the Prop. 8 protest all afternoon on Saturday. I suppose a new pair of sneakers is well deserved after walking through the Loop all day fighting for equal rights.

I am personally lusting after a new pair of Dansko shoes. They are so classic yet surprisingly versatile. I wasn’t really a believer that one of the top selling orthopedic brands could be both functional and fashionable, and I certainly didn’t want to be labeled as a stereotypical “comfortable shoe wearer,” if you catch my drift. My good friend Alicia, a Minnesota native and a queen of comfort, has rocked the Danskos in so many different ways that I am now fully convinced that they rule. They’re also surprisingly affordable for the caliber of quality.

My first love is boots. Oh my god, I love boots probably more than anything else that I wear. If I were playing that game where you get the question, “If you had to walk around naked all day with the exception of one article of clothing what would it be?” I would say — you guessed it — boots. Like a 3-year-old. I really, really want these:

The brand is called J Shoes, and they’re out of the UK. Unfortunately, you have to search for a distributor in the U.S. as their official website does not ship to the U.S., but they’re easy enough to find if you Google the brand name. They have lots of other great shoes in their autumn and winter collections by the by, so if you don’t share my enthusiasm for this particular knee-high pair of perfection, you should most definitely check out the rest of the J Shoes glory. My girlfriend actually wants the shorter, mid-calf version of said boots. (How gay are we?)

I bought my first pair of shoes with laces in years last spring when I played kickball. (I am dead serious about the boot thing — it’s sort of a problem.) Since then, I’ve branched out and have discovered my deep love for high-tops. I really loved the Schattenboxen that Puma put out and got a pair off eBay before they became totally obscure. Lately, I’m super into almost every pair of Technicolor high-top that I come across.

I discovered that Converse came out with an even higher version of their high-tops called “Knee-Hi,” including some with exclusive designs. Obviously, I’m a fan. While I was at the Puma store on Saturday, I found out that you can design your own pair of personalized Pumas at the Mongolian Shoe BBQ. It’s amazing: You can pick out everything from the interior of the shoes to the exterior to the laces. Pitter-patter goes my little gay heart.

Shoes are the easiest way to make your clothes feel new because the type of shoe you pair with an ensemble changes its entire look. You can dress down a nice pair of pants with a cool pair of sneakers and you can mimic Mary Kate by pairing a hot pair of boots with your best pair of shredded tights and be instantly hobo chic. High-tops matched with some striped socks can bring your ankle-length pants back from the dead. Are you hot to trot?

shoes are the one thing that i spend the most time on in the morning. sometimes is just too hard to decide which ones to wear. whenever i go to the mall the first place i go to is journey's because it's got the coolest tennis shoes. that's where i've gotten all my converses including my christmas ones which look like candy canes. they're amazing.

    Converse

I've got leather black/white Converse, and the summer ones in grey/multi colour. What I usually do is buy a pair of fake ones and wear them out completely in one summer, with the grey ones as my 'decent' sneakers^^ I've had one pair that ended up covered in ash, marshmallows and beer last summer XD But that's it. Converse. Got black Reeboks for work and heels for prom, but since don't work a lot and have prom once a year I hardly ever wear those. ;)

You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.

    CONVERSE!

i have like, about ten pairs. i got my first ones brand new from the thrift store for $2 about 8 years ago before people really started goin to thrift stores and they started raising their prices lol. Red lowtops. those and my black high tops are my favorites; the black ones look a mess...i took a bleach pen to them and wrote 'baptized in the funk' on them. Other ones too; camo ones, black/white checkered ones, orange, pink patchwork, monoblack, red hi..i like them because they're the only shoes i can wear wth shorts that don't make my legs look ridic skinny.

But those knee high ones up there are definitely on my wishlist. I saw some black combat lookin ones with pockets on them. I fell in love.

    I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

    Equestrian boots...

...are my current fix. I have the same pair in black and brown. Whenever I go home, my mom makes some snarky joke about me looking like I'm about to go shoot some moose with Sarah Palin, O_x.

    EckoRed

I love Ecko Red sneakers. I have a bunch of them and wear them everytime. The coolest thing about them is that they come with 2 shoestrings of different collor so you can make it look like a different shoe.

    Yes but No

Emily, your choice and love of boots, pumas and converse are perfect. On the other hand... Orthopedic? Seriously?

You lost major street cred with that one. Sorry

Those boots are great, and I dig the sneakers too. From November to about March, I live in my, *cough*Uggs*cough* (great for staying warm when it's snowy and the pup has to be walked).

    I love these Styled-Out posts!

    Remember when Chucks were $20

I hate shoe shopping, and I don't like spending crap loads of money on something I wear on my feet. So, I always bought Chucks since they never change.

The price of Converse went up because Nike bought them out. When they were made in the USA they were $20, or $10 at the outlet (and defective LOL). Now they're made in Korea and cost twice as much. WTF?

Anyway, I used to wear blue Chucks, and whenever I got a new pair I'd take a sharpie and draw a black triangle over the star. Of course, hardly anyone is aware that the black triangle is the symbol for lesbian. You know, in the concentration camps gay men wore the pink triangle and lesbians wore the black triangle.

    nike

hmm without giving too much away, I have the benifit of shopping at the nike employee store.  when nike bought converse, converse was in a finacial slump. I remember paying 35-40 for a pair of convs before the purchase was made.  Converse is still its own company.. with nikes money helping out.. hence no swoosh on the chuck t's  However it is nice to pay 20 bucks for chuck t's again.

    Cole Haan.

They are so comfortable and fashionable and if you catch them on sale, so worth it.  Some of the shoes are classic but they have also been putting out younger prints and styles.  I love the ones that are cute flats with the Nike bottoms.  They are great for a day of running around.
