"SNL" goes Gaga

Ohmygod, ohmygod! Madonna and Lady Gaga just kissed! Well, almost.

This past weekend, SNL was hosted by Ryan Reynolds. Too bad nobody cares. I obviously skipped ahead to only the parts with musical guest Lady Gaga in them.

On the “Deep House Dish" talk show skit, Madonna made a cameo and performed standard teeny bopper choreography in sync with Gaga, which eventually erupted into a wig-pulling, leather-boot kicking, diva-on-diva cat fight slash strangling match. Kenan Thompson was the host, and brought the brawling blondes on either side of him on the couch to keep them from inflicting real bodily harm on one another.

Gaga: Hey guess what, Madonna? I’m totally hotter than you.
Madonna: I’m totally taller than you. And what kind of name is Lady Gaga? It sounds like baby food.
Gaga: The kind that’s number one on the Billboard Charts!

Lady Gaga lunges for the Material Girl and the hair pulling ensues.

After Kenan tries to tame the “bee-itches,” they kiss and make up. Well, they were about to kiss, but instead kiss Kenan on either cheek, to which the audience [disappointedly] laughs. I groan with agony. Boys ruin everything.

But seriously, why is Madonna always kissing the latest pop princesses? First, Christina and Britney, and now Lady Gaga? Who’s next for her — Miley Cyrus? Talk about a cougar!

Perhaps energized by her near-makeout with the Queen of Pop (at least one of them), Lady Gaga’s performances were pretty awesome. I think we forget how talented she is because of her ridiculous outfits and bloody stage antics. She continued the new SNL tradition of cussing on TV when she sang “s---t” loud and clear on “Paparrazzi.”

Later, with the rings of Saturn orbiting around her body, Lady GaGa did an awesomely stripped piano-and-vocal medley of her new single “Bad Romance,” a couple nostalgic and laudatory songs about New York and of course the cabaret-like version of “Poker Face.” She definitely killed it and it was refreshing to hear an artist who doesn’t need to auto-tune herself to sound good live. And she was B.A. on the piano, too.

Apart from the GaGa’s killer performances (she made a few other cameos throughout the show), I wasn’t too impressed with any of the other skits. Ahmadinejad’s “wife” was kind of funny, I guess, in the way in which she ridiculed him for not understanding English and told everyone not to be scared of such a harmless little man. In fact, I wouldn’t be writing about this show if there hadn’t been an almost-kiss between two female pop icons or the F-bomb.

Hopefully SNL can pick things up, but in the meantime, they’ll keep getting press if their women keep doing entertaining things. I guess you can always count on the ladies.

Gawd

Am I the only one who's sorta tired of Gaga already? I mean, WHAT is with those crazy outfits?! And however catchy her songs are, they get pretty gosh darned annoying when they're stuck in your head for hours on end...

Madonna, on the other hand... <3 Woot!

Gaga

Her outfits are crazy but she's really talented. This is my new favorite performance of hers:

Some of the skits were funny, but as usual they were few and far in between. Gaga and Madonna were funny-ish. She also did one with Andy Samberg which was better. There wasn't enough KWiig though.

Agreed.

Her songs are insanely catchy, and for the most part i enjoy them, but at this point she is just strange, especially after the whole VMAs thing.
boredjen's picture

Meh...

I've never found her songs catchy. I didn't like it when I heard it in mainstream dance clubs in the 90's and I don't like it now. Her schtick is eyeroll inducing. And trust me, I get it...I've seen the movie Party Monster, I'm from NYC so I know about the club kids from Limelight, I'm a big Bowie fan so I'm aware of Ziggy Stardust and I know who Leigh Bowery is...it's not that interesting to me when she does it.

But whatever...to each their own.

Not that she doesn't have talent. She can sing and she plays piano well...so...kudos for that.

peewee's picture

Nope

Your not the only one. I don't think she's that good. Pop crap, imo.

The skit with Madonna

Was horrible.  Well, Madonna was horrible.  The 'dancing' was total crap.  I didn't even realise that it actually WAS Madonna at first.  It felt like they had maybe practised it once.  I dunno...was it SUPPOSED to be bad maybe?

Now...the skit where Lady Gago and Andy were both covered in bubbles? Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. I also loved how Lorne had them on his tie :)

SNL where have you gone!

I don't know what happened to SNL, it used to be a good show. Now there are only moments that are kind of funny. Kritsin Wiig is by far the best cast member.

Although, i did enjoy Lady Gaga, the girl can play the piano. :)

Lady Gaga!!!

Omg...I loved Lady gaga way back since poker face :)

I think her songs are great...and her costumes are a bit on the crazy side but what the heck...she's been orginal. If she was being normal and boring everyone would still be slating her, and now she's creative she still being hated....I still love you GAGA

I must admit the comment by madonna was hilarious lol....What kinda name is Lady Gaga? It sounds like baby food!!

Lady Gaga was great!

This episode of SNL was the first time I really saw Lady Gaga perform, and I loved both of her performances! Particularly the songe she did on the piano; that was really wonderful, and a lot more intimate than I'm used to seeing on SNL. It made me want to see more of her!

Love Gaga!!

I was wondering if you all were going to post anything about this. Damn I wish I had more time to actually write something on here about it but I've gotta go! I'll do it later though for sure. In short: Lady Gaga is a genius.

Lady Gaga

I really feel that I could write a 10 page essay on this women, studying every single thing she does. Hell I could write more than that. But, to sum it all up on AE, I truly think she is going to be the greatest artist of my generation. People can get easily distracted by the things that she will wear, say, or do. I did when I first saw her. It wasn't until very recently that I realized what a great artist she is. The woman can sing. And she can play the piano like nobodies business. If you ever go on youtube and search for her acoustic versions of her songs you'll realize that. Really, when she plays her music "her" way she is similar to someone like Regina Spektor (I actually read someone else make the comparison somewhere, I just can't remember where, but I agree with it).

After I realized what an artist she was I started to look at her actions. That was when I realized that she isn't just any ordinary pop singer, and she isn't just some crazy person putting on a show, this woman has dedicated her whole being into being a living, breathing, walking art form. She's sacrificed herself to become this image of what "fame" is. When she was on the red carpet at the VMAs who was her date? Kermit the Frog. Weird right? Not unless you forget about the idea of Kermit being a childhood memory and look at him for what he really is: a puppet. Kermit symbolizes her bringing a puppet on a string as her date, rather than another celebrity (who could also be seen as a puppet on a string).

I really cannot stand when people say that she doesn't have any talent. Of course that is their own opinion, but I feel when people say that they are saying it because they are too busy looking at the outside of her and not at what she is performing. Just because she is out of the ordinary does not mean she lacks talent. I'm not a fan of her album at all. I only really liked 2 songs off of it. But if you look at how she performs when she is in her own element then you cannot deny the woman is pure talent. Her VMA performance is one of the greatest performance I have ever seen.

I could talk about this woman forever. She fascinates me more than any artist I've ever come across. I truly cannot wait to see what she does next. Sorry for writing so much, I really had to hold myself back from writing more lol.

Okay, you are like the best

Okay, you are like the best person in the whole world and I would like to marry you.

Now about Regina.

Regina is like my favorite person in the entire world, I thought nobody in my life could nudge or at the very least sit beside her in the pinnacle I placed her at, but then this Lady comes along, someone I would not take seriously at first glance, I mean, what kind of name is that, and why was she hiding beneath those ginormous sunglasses? The first song I heard of hers was Pokerface and it caught me not because of the beat or the lyrics, but the voice of the singer. I was like, "who is that?" And when I learned that it was "the Lady Gaga" the other people were talking about and whom I would not take seriously because I am a Regina fan, I was surprised and I could not believe it. And then I heard Just Dance and I was like, what a voice!" I mean normally, in club music, what you would notice normally would be the beat or the tune, but Lady Gaga's voice simply shines through. I mean, you could say what you want about her, but the girl can and does know how to sing.

Plus, she's a great lyricist. Great not in the way that it can contribute to the advancement of humankind but in a way that you would know that whoever wrote the stuff is a well-worded, well-read person.

And the piano, OMG, she can totally get it on with my Regina, search "Honest Eyes, Lady Gaga" at youtube and see what I mean. She's like pressing 50 keys per second without even looking. And whenever she plays, it's like she and the piano are one entity.

Plus, really great performer, who could deny that? I saw her live even before I did Regina.

Basically, she rocked my Regina-worshipping world, she tumbled it down. And now I really have no idea who is currently sitting at the musical pinnacle that I have set up.

And sorry for the long post too.

Can't eat, can't sleep, I refuse to dream of you only to find myself awake and you are not there.

Honest Eyes

Holy crap that Honest Eyes performance was amazing. I loved it. I completely agree with you when you mention her and the piano. She is great without it, but when she sings with it its like the perfect combination of two sounds. So glad to see other people know about her acoustic performances too!

[Edit] here is another one I love:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uFRg2epy-w&feature=related

Notice how she changes the lyrics and how she replaces certain words from the song with others. I love it.

I didn't recognize Madanna

I didn't recognize her either, it didn't look like her at all and I thought the skit was a little ridiculous, but that's what Hot House Dish is about.

I did think Lady Gaga was good in parts of the show, but the outfits just take away from her talent.

The ending of the skit was a

The ending of the skit was a hugh disappointment, guess I should have seen it coming though. OF COURSE it would end that way urgh. :/

Madonna always kissing the latest pop princesses

"But seriously, why is Madonna always kissing the latest pop princesses?"

My very first thought when I saw this article, lol.  Love Madonna but come on, there's just no longer any shock or entertainment value in this kinda "stunt" *yawns*

I didn't even like the giant orbit....she could barely move, and hardly play the piano...

Lady Gaga definitely can put

Lady Gaga definitely can put on a show. I'm sure with her solo tour she'll do much better than if she went with Kanye.
