Ellen moves into “Cougar Town”This morning, in honor of the new Courtney Cox series Cougar Town, the New York Daily News compiled a photo tribute to Hollywood’s hottest cougars and their (much) younger prey. Among the usual cradle-robbers — Demi, Madonna and Mariah — was our very own Ellen DeGeneres.
That the 51-year-old new American Idol judge is married to 35-year-old Portia di Rossi, clearly makes her a cougar, but I guess it just never occurred to me to classify her as one. Damn heteronormativity. Good thing the folks over at the NY Daily News aren’t as oblivious as I am, and did well to include a lesbian in their list. Bravo!
It’s time to brainstorm, ladies: What should we call a lesbian cougar? A lezgar? A coug-bian? Cherie Jaffe?

I think Ellen knows she's been called a 'cougar'...
Last week (Sept. 15), Ellen had young tennis player Michelle Oudin on her show. At one point in the interview, Ellen brought up the age of Michelle's younger boyfriend (who was discussed earlier in the clip). After Michelle said their respective ages (at Ellen's prompting), Ellen gave her a very knowing high-five. I totally understood that as a joke about their shared status as "cougars". You can see the clip HERE (with the high-five part starting about 5 min, 28 seconds in).
In August of '08, The Advocate wrote an article on lesbian cougars. While the interviews were interesting, the photos kind of emphasize a 'predatory' element. You can read it ONLINE.
While I understand the perception of a predatory aspect with an older woman who prefers to date multiple younger partners (male or female), I think that sometimes people miss the fact that sometimes two people of different ages make a genuine connection and a life together. At least, that has been the experience of my wife and I.

I think the term cougar is somewhat demeaning to older women, especially lesbians, because many times it IS the younger woman going after the older woman in the relationship. I pursued my partner for months before she let her guard down (she is more than 20 years older than I) and we have formed an amazing & healthy, loving relationship and life together.
For people to say that they "wouldnt" date younger or older is obviously just their preference but from my perspective, it is all relative to the age of your soul and your life experience.

The reality is ...
The true predators are the younger women believe me. While I will admire the beauty of a nubile younger woman, UNLESS she has the intelligence of the 22 year old molecular biologist (who was listed in the Who's Who of Women in Science) that I once dated, and youthful beauty is all she has to offer. I'm not interested in her.
Younger women though want to be with the more mature lesbians for various reasons:
1.They want to learn
2.They feel that they are too emotionally mature for women their own age (For the most part they are not).
OR (and this does happen)
4. They want the emotional support a mother gives (Yeah that happens and that's pretty off putting when sex is involved).
Now if you say that "Love is Love" regardless of the age difference and don't acknowledge the wealth of experiences a person has because of their age then is it really love?
Besides anything more than a generation can impact on mutual knowledge and interests. Although in Ellen's case since she has to be knowledgeable on a viety of subject that may not be as much of an issue for her.

So how is that dismissing the intelligence of younger women? Clearly this younger woman that I dated was a genius. Absolutely Brilliant.

Wow, can you calm down? She's a fictional character, not a real person so I don't know why you're taking this so seriously. If someone had said something bad about a character I liked from a TV show, I wouldn't be able to care less. I just thought Shane was way too attractive and generally way too good for Cherie, who, no, I didn't think looked good at all. That's my opinion and I'm really not sorry for having it. And most of the reason why I didn't like her was for her personality, it had little to do with her looks.
As for how I'll age, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

On the other hand I pegged Ellen as a Cherie Jaffe the minute she tossed Alex out on her bum X-Mas Eve so 36 year old Portia could move in (Portia's 36 now). At 40 Alex was just too old and not Blond enough. Poor Baby.
