Beyoncé breaks a record and Gaga gays it up at 2010 Grammys
Before we begin the recap of the Grammys, I’d like to take this opportunity to say that Beyoncé had one of the best albums of all time! Oh wait — Kanye didn’t storm the stage and whine when Taylor Swift had an upset victory for Album of the Year with Fearless? Shocking. Nevermind then.
The gays set the tone of the 2010 Grammys last night, when Lady Gaga, after being dumped into an incinerator for her “mind-controlling” performance of “Poker Face,” reemerged with the most fabulous pop princess of them all, Sir Elton John, for a duet so bedazzled and flamboyant, it brought Saturday drag nights to the center stage. Their pianos were conjoined, their faces were smudged with charcoal, and I nearly peed myself as they sang “Speechless” and “Your Song.” Perhaps her vast popularity with the gays extended to the Grammy nominating committee and scored her the first two awards of her career.
Stephen Colbert continued the gay(ish)ness when he told his teenage daughter in the audience to have a good night, but “stay away from Katy Perry.” Seriously, though, I don’t think her obnoxious fiancé Russell Brand would mind it.
Beyoncé assumed total domination of the Grammys as she first seamlessly belted her way through “If I Were a Boy” to the angsty “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette before taking home six Grammys — breaking the record for most Grammys any female artist has won in a single night — including Song of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Halo.”
The ever-stunning P!nk performed what now appears to be her trademark of daredevil acrobatics as she sang “Glitter in the Air,” disrobed, and spun high above the audience on a swing, drenched in water. If the whole singing thing doesn’t work, P!nk should definitely join the circus.
Though I was annoyed that Taylor Swift of all people got to join the Stevie Nicks onstage, the former Fleetwood Mac frontrunner rocked the stage to “Rhiannon,” despite Swift’s off-key contributions. For real, though, Swift sounded horrible on such an epic classic. Whatever, Beyoncé had one of the best albums of all-time.
Despite seeming like it was a giant plug for Avatar, the 3-D “Earth Song” tribute to Michael Jackson was beautiful: Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson on one stage is pretty damn sexy.Other highlights of the night were a shout-out to the iPad, a futuristic performance by the Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli’s Haiti fundraiser duet of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and MJ's children, Paris and Prince Michael, accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award on their father’s behalf.
Also, out lesbian Sharon Isbin won Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) for her album Journey To The New World. Congrats!
What was your favorite moment/artist/beautiful woman of the night?

Taylor Swift>>
That little girl won album of the freakin' year! That is the dumbest thing I've heard all day!
I'm glad I changed the channel to see the encore of 'Big Love.' I might have thrown my remote at the TV.
I mean, nothing against Taylor- I like her. She plays her own instruments and writes her own music- I deeply respect that. BUT in no way, shape or form should she have gotten AOTY. Just...no.
Ditto...
And as I declare my "wtf!?!" of her winning the AOTY, I feel the restlessness of her fans approaching, lol.
Seriously, just no, imo.
gonna have to agree there
I, too, didn't watch the grammys but followed tweets and facebook status updates. When I read that she was doing a duet with Stevie Nicks I thought, "NOOOO STEVIE, Don't do it!"
http://ohiolezgirlinnyc.wordpress.com/
gonna have to agree there
Isorry for the double post!
I know
My gf and I were horified!!! non stop moaning..... there should be a law against it.... :-(
As for her win... hey maybe it's like Bush getting elected?! Unbelievably stupid and stollen!LOL
But then I rarely agree with many of the awards given at the Grammys so... :-\ Of course I don't always care about broad appeal, and I know number of albums sold has to do with marketing as well, and I think her pixie skinny young girl was a big selling point....
I will admit that I was surprised to find out she wrote her own songs, made me less annoyed...
Agree!
Yeah, she is talented and all... but I mean come on?! Freakin' album of the year... my ass... and Pink's performance was simply amazingly beautiful... ha even my mother who does not dig Pink... was in total awe... I loved it.

Album of the Year
I've rarely agreed with the Album of the Year winners over the years, and this year isn't any different. Sure Taylor's a great musician, but when it came down to Album of the Year, I don't know if she should've won it, even if she did have the biggest selling album in 2009.
Of the nominees, I think I would've given it to Lady GaGa over Beyonce. The Fame really broke out in 2009, even though the album was released back in August 2008. It put GaGa on the map and the achievements she's managed with all her singles so far off that album are amazing (all singles went to #1 if I'm not mistaken). Beyonce's album pretty much rode on Single Ladies and Halo's success. Also, Beyonce's won big before, so I wouldn't mind giving someone else a shot.
As for favourite moment of the night? I'd have to say Pink's performance. It was a nice change of pace from the rest of the show and a great combo of aerial acrobatics and powerful ballad-belting vocals.
wanna take a ride on ur disco stick
Honestly...
I agree
The whole Taylor thing is a little overrated at this point. she has won the awards, now its time for her to go get in a cave somewhere and be gone for a while. lol.
Stephen Colbert outed his
GAGA.
Lady Gaga should have one evrything at the Grammy's. End of discussion.
Oh, the irony of today's society.
not impressed.
dear Beyonce - if you are going to try to sing someone else's song.. you might want to actually learn the RIGHT lyrics.
dear Lady Gaga - PINK totally out awesomed you.
.. and really Bon Jovi kicked everyones asses lol
dear Beyonce - if you are
Agreed. AND Taylor got to
Taylor Swift
I don't know what you want for album of the year, but hers was incredibly popular as well as acclaimed within the music world. What else is there, really?
One of Taylor's huge strengths is her really broad appeal. Little kids listen to her songs. Old people listen to her songs. Country radio, pop radio, and easy-listening radio all play her songs. This is strikingly different from Beyonce, who is largely ignored by everyone except the 15-35 age group, and not even all of them. I'm not saying everyone loves Taylor Swift, obviously, but I would suspect the number is much much larger than that of the other people up for Album of the year. Also, many of the songs from that album are popular. I don't think I know any songs on Beyonce's other than Single Ladies and Halo.
As for her duet last night, yes she was off sometimes, but I actually thought that Stevie Nicks was usually the one off. Wasn't paying super close attention so I could be wrong. Also, her song was significantly lower than it usually is. Not sure if that was to accomidate Nicks, but I would suspect it would be a bit tricky to do a song you sing that often in a different key. More so than the original, anyway.
I like Taylor
I really like Taylor..I do, but she didn't deserve that award. I'm really starting to feel that she is getting all these awards out of pity and what people expect after what happened. Everybody still think "oh poor Taylor" but even though her album was good, it was NOT the best!!
Fearless went 5x Platinum with two #1's, I am..Sasha Fierce went 6x Platinum with three #1's, and The Fame went 8x Platinum with four #1's. so WTF?? So because of those fact I go for Lady Gaga! And let's face it....these awards are all BS!!

ugh
taylor swift was completely incomprehensible, but then again one wouldnt expect any validity coming from an organisation that listed LMFAO on the best electronic/dance album ballot.
Pink and Dreya Weber?!
I think
I think so, cause she choreographed and teached her all her other aerial performances. And watching the video on youtube I'm pretty sure it's her who puts Pink in the cloth seat!!

thanks
thanks all, I figured that had to be Dreya Weber! That was beautiful!
It's so cool to see Pink sing while doing aerials, Pink's really figured out something unique to her within the music industry, doing these aerials, she's so athletic it makes sense.
I can see this performance really getting her new attention... my gf says it this way:"Pink has really come into her own."
Pink and Dreya Weber
I re-watched the Grammy performance on Youtube and also thought that was Dreya Weber that put Pink into the sling (Putting a nearly naked Pink in a sling...what a great job!) Now I want to know if Dreya also got her all wet!
Dreya apparently choreographed Pink's use of the ribbons at her Wembly concert last year or the year before. It is a knockout performance, if you can find it on line. Glad to know that Pink is a fan of The Gymnast.
I can't freakin' STAND
I can't freakin' STAND Taylor Swift. Especially now since she got to perform with Stevie. Hero of mine, jussayin'. They could have at least given Carrie Underwood that role...

Beyoncé should have won the best album, loved Black Eyed Peas.
They could have done better with The Michael Jackson Tribute, but i liked it anyway.
LOL!

wow
There sure are a lot of haters in this thread. #justsayin
But out of all the Grammy winner speaches, I must say, Taylor's was one of the most genuine, sincere and grateful I've seen to date!
interesting article
on just that speech:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/arts/music/02taylor.html
"Over the last three and a half years, Ms. Swift has established herself as pop’s leading naïf. Not in her songwriting... but in her persona. By now, she’s even patented a look she whips out at award shows... when her innocence is threatened by acclaim: eyes wide, mouth agape, hand held over it as if to keep in the breath she’d just gasped as if it were her last."
Taylor Swift>>
Hey, I'm not hatin'.
Like I said- I actually like and respect Taylor. She just didn't deserve to win AOTY.
And she for damn sure did NOT deserve to win Record of the Year over Pink's 'Sober.' I'm not even a Pink fan and I realize that song is brilliant.
At the end of the day, I think Taylor is a lovely, smart, sweet and talented young lady and I look forward to seeing her songwriting talent flourish... BUT I have to agree with an above poster: I'm starting to think she's getting a pity vote 'cuz of the whole VMA thing.
Pfffbt!!
I have to agree
appalled at beyonce and other winners

may i just say that the lady gaga and sir elton john duo is possilbly the best grammy duo ever? actually, fuck "possibly". it definitely is. loved it!
and although i do like taylor swift and beyonce, gaga totally deserved some of those rewards. i'm still shocked that kings of leon beat all three for record of the year. what the fuck?
I'm really happy for Beyoncé
she deserved to win each one of those grammys!
