Archie Panjabi's character on "The Good Wife" could be bisexualAfterEllen.com’s forums have been abuzz with readers whose gaydars have been picking up on the non-straightness of Archie Panjabi’s character, Kalinda Sharma, on CBS’s The Good Wife. Though there aren’t any American news sources confirming Kalinda’s sexuality, South Asian-specific blog Sepia Mutiny and several Indian news sites, as well as some in the UK, reported a month ago that Panjabi’s character is indeed bisexual.
Rediff Movies states that Panjabi, the Indian-origin actress of Bend it like Beckham fame, plays Kalinda, a “bisexual Indian investigator who works alongside the show’s attorney protagonist, [Alicia Florrick], played by Julianna Margulies.” No word yet on whether Kalinda’s bisexuality will be explored or portrayed in a healthy way, but according to the forums, I’m clearly not alone in speculating that the character Donna is Kalinda’s lezzy lover. And now, in light of these confirmations, Donna very well may be the Kalinda-loving girlfriend we’ve all been waiting for.
Now, why are we so behind the times? Why on earth wouldn’t CBS or any other American news source reveal this juicy tidbit to us earlier on? It has to be some kind of sick joke. Lez-be-honest: I’ll watch any show with a bisexual or lesbian character on it and I’m sure there so many of us who can say the same, which would give them even more ratings from loyal lesbian fans.
Nonetheless, I am sure glad that journalists overseas know how to do their jobs, and, if it's true, this means one huge thing: there is another queer female character on a major network show and a queer woman of color at that! Let's hope this means we can rejoice soon. Guess we'll have to keep watching. Submitted by on October 20, 2009 - 5:00pm. |

i love this show
cool
yeah, very very good show.
Totally agree
Not only that, but I'll also watch any show with a lesbian or bisexual actress in it. It's the only reason I even bother with 'Three Rivers'...though it's so bad I have to fast forward through most of it.
Three Rivers
Three Rivers is really bad. I was hoping it would pick up, but Monday I actually fell asleep watching it. That is really bad, because I never fall asleep watching TV.
I'll probably watch...
i guess my gaydar is pretty accurate.
haha...i totally picked up something on her. LOVE the show
"vaginas are awesome."
I knew it!
Love this show (my favorite new show of the season)...and was definitely picking up on the subtext between these two.
Mark my words: it's only a matter of time before those after work drinks lead to a hook-up between Alicia and Kalinda.

oh yeah
Cool...
Wow that would be amazing!
This show has legs!
What a great vehicle for Julianna Margulies. Archie is sharp and smokin' - the revelation about her character is just a bonus. Am I the only one frightened by Christine Baranski's face?
I knew it!!
Dude!! I just watched this week's episode hoping to see or hear something about her being gay or bi! From the great non conformist way she dresses, speaking of the past, taking "chances" and being radicle, as she briefly talked about her past in a previous episode, I knew she would be either bi of lezzy!! My gay-dar was going beep beep beep!! Oh I can't wait to see some action! :)
SdQ Out!
I WAS RIGHT
Haha, I effing KNEW it!
I've been watching the show, and just tonight I was thinking, "God, I love this woman. She is so beautiful. And I'm getting a vibe from her... I seriously hope she turns out not to be straight."
Awesome. I hope they give her an actual, meaningful relationship with another woman in the plot. I'm so sick of TV portraying bisexuals as straight girls who just want to experiment, or who always end up with men.
OMGOMG
hate to spoil the mood, but
"I am sure glad that journalists overseas know how to do their jobs" - uhh, I wouldn't be too sure of it. Rediff and the likes are usually only good for speculating about the privat relationship between any lead couple in a movie. That's at least my experience.
So I would actually see it as a good thing that US media aren't just spreading the rumors without any further proof.
yes
I'm glad it is not all over the "news"
I immediately picked up on
I think it's more than just rumours
I don't think they're aiming for sexual tension between the ladies, it IS CBS after all... that they'd even have an openly lesbian/bi character even in a supporting part is a huge step forward but with Archie's talent and knack for inserting looks and adlib physical stuff that's not in the script, it could still get interesting ;)
I think they might have chosen not to advertise on the character NOT to spook the usual CBS audience, knowing that the word would 'come out' ;) in the community anyway. Besides it seems Archie is hinting at it in a Variety interview...so she might also be under a gag order until they decide what to do with that aspect of her character.

But I'm sure we all picked up the vibe because the actress has been informed from the start of the character's orientation and played it subtly. Also a kickass, slightly bitchy woman in leather is rare enough on network tv to signify only one thing really...
As I was saying on the forum, it wouldn't be the first time for Archie who locked lips with Olivia Grant in the BBC short lived series Personal Affairs. It was quite hot actually... the only interesting storyline in the show unfortunately.

Archie Panjabi on Personal Affairs
Didn't Archie Panjabi play a closeted lesbian on Personal Affairs?
Without providing any spoilers, she won't be appearing in any future episodes of Personal Affairs (unless she appears as a twin or in a dream sequence).
While it's cool...
to hear that Archie's character might be bisexual in the show, it's not the reason I'm tuning in. I watched the whole season (yeah three episodes) last week while I was home sick, and I really enjoyed the show. It's by far the best new show on TV right now. Julianna rocks but she has a fantastic support cast, which definitely includes Archie.
Honestly, I don't care if they have a bi or lesbian character in the show and it is well written, so I cross my fingers that they won't do this for the ratings if it's true. I sincerely hope in the future that lesbian and bisexual characters in the mainstream media won't need an announcement, it just happens.
I personally wouldn't get
I personally wouldn't get your hopes up. Not because of anything I've heard, but just because this is frickin' CBS.
Someone mentioned they're surprised it hasn't been promoted ... well CBS/GL didn't promote Otalia, either, until a fan base was already there, and then they screwed us.
Sorry, this is off-topic but I'm still obviously bitter. Until I know whether the ultimate decisions about Otalia were made by GL execs/writers or from someone at the network, I just won't trust CBS.
I like Julianna and this actress is hot and maybe it will be great, but ...
gay, straight, bi I dont
gay, straight, bi I dont care I love her!! ;p
-I speak in random thoughts
I checked out all the
I checked out all the episodes after seeing this post. I like Archie's character - she is sassy and smart and I would LOVE to hear she's bi. Got a feeling that she's got a much softer corner for women though and reserves her sensitive side for them - with men, she's pretty much blatantly using her sexuality to get some info, but never really falling for them.
I doubt if she and Alicia are going to hook up though. Alicia seems more into that lawyer who is her boss, and of course, still ambivalent about her feelings for her husband.
BTW, which is the episode where this Donna incident happens? I've seen upto epi 5 and it's not in that one...
it's eppy 4
It's in Episode 4... Alicia is looking for her jewelry in a cupboard or something and she is talking with her Mother in Law when she sees she missed a call from Kalinda and calls back.

Gelfling thanks...off to
Great show!
So nice to have a well-done drama on television. A strong, lesbian/bi character is just icing on the cake.

Nonchalantnly bisexual...
'Sexy' 'an Indian stunner' and 'nonchalantly bisexual'
Those are the very terms used to describe Kalinda's attitude in the Pilot script... so now let's see what they'll do with it. So far not much but they don't seem to be sweeping it under the rug so that's good.

Did anyone catch Kalinda's
Definitely...
Okay so I'm NOT crazy! The way the other actress (very nice by the way) looked off and said 'Hey... people change' and the way Kalinda smiled and looked down on that... there definitely was something going on.
well... it seems Kalinda went to catholic school so... that would explain so much :D
It seems the network is not decided to push it any farther than flirtation and subtext though... they are apparently recruiting a male love interest (possible recurring) for Kalinda and things get heated... don't know when don't know how much heat there'll be but we'll see.
Although there is hope that the FBI lady will be back as she's got a name (yay) according to IMDB. Lana Davenport. and it's alsways a good sign when characters who are not named in episodes still get a script name as it implies possible further development or recurrence. Also the actress, Jill Flint has some tv recurring in the past, is NY based and is probably not the actress you'd hire for 5 lines in an episode... but who knows?
