I can’t believe this is why I’m going to watch the VMAs

I am way too old to watch the MTV Video Music Awards. I couldn’t pick a good chunk of the nominees out of a lineup. I don’t own any of the performers or presenters’ CDs (though I have downloaded a song or two, legally — because I am old). Yet, still, I plan to watch this Sunday. Why? Why put myself through the ordeal of watching something so clearly not aimed at my demographic, tastes or sensibilities? Why grate my teeth to a nub at the nominated songs and their accompanying bad grammar? ("The Way I Are"? I Are? Ahhhhh!) Well, it’s simple and terribly shameful. I’m going to watch the VMAs for Britney Spears.

Now, before you come after me with barber shears and a bag of Cheetos, let me explain. Sure, Britney isn’t much of a singer. Sure, she isn’t much of a scholar. And, clearly, she isn’t any kind of a role model. But there is one thing you can always count on from ol’ Brit: pure, unadulterated, unintellectualized spectacle. For good or bad, the girl knows how to create a scene. And some of her best stunts have come at the VMAs. Things like — oh, I don’t know — this.

Or this.

Or this.

You see where I’m going with this. Do I expect the nubile Madonna-kissing, snake-wielding, hip-shimmying pop tartlet of days past? Of course not. This Britney is a very different, much sadder creation. And, as long as I’m admitting shameful things, part of me wants to watch to see if she fails. Let’s face it, everyone loves to rubberneck as they go by an accident. But then another part of me, in some perverse way, wants to see her pull it off after all. In this absurd celebrity culture we’ve created where the famous are hunted like quarry with their every flaw dissected for our amusement, and where even 25-year-olds have to worry about comebacks, Britney is the epitome of our love/hate relationship with our stars. We scorn them, but we can’t stop watching either. I, for one, would much rather watch something like this again.

Hit Me Britney One More Time

I usually don't watch award shows either (don't like to see so much material excess on TV 'cause it makes it difficult to return to my meager world), but i was a bit of a Britney fan back in the day. I was the only hip-hop lover I knew who would sing along to "Sometimes" and "Lucky".

But I feel kind of bad for Britney - seeing her spiral out of control in the public eye. I just hope she'll be able to heal/reform/atone in the public eye as well.

I'm going to watch the show and hope for the best. Clapy mildy when she's done. Who knows? Maybe we won't see cleavage or gratuitous flesh on Sunday but an indication that Britney's getting back on the right track.

Right track. Heh. Music humor. Completely unintentional. Just hope she continues in way that's less destructive for her and her children.

:]

She is exactly the reason why I am going to watch this year's VMA.. I just hope everything goes well for her and she can finally have her big comeback.

Also they've been leaking her music to hype up the media, and ofcourse everyone else.

I could sense a bet being made if she will rise or fall from the VMA performance.. I think this is so much better then a thriller movie.. seriously.. I am like sitting on the edge of my seat till I see the VMAs

Good luck to her.. and I wished she never chopped her hair off *sigh*

Britney Spears @ the VMAs

Your not the only one who's going to tune in 'cause of Britney Spears, Dorothy.

Like you said Britney knows how to put on a SHOW. And the VMA without a Britney performance haven't been the same.

I realy would like her to pull it off, to nail her performance. 'cause if she doesn't have her career to help her comeout off the hell that she have put her self in, what else will she have? Most of the time Work can save someone's life. Thus, even if I'm not a Britney fan, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that she "kills the game" LOL

Have to say that the single "gimme more" produce by Danja that have been arround the net for more than a week now, is a HOT HOT HOT pop song. It's a pure hit.

She has the hot new song; now she needs to give us a perfect performance pure, unadulterated, unintellectualized spectacle. :-D

Heh

I love how alot of myspacer's have quoted "It's Britney Bitch"

It's a good comeback track.. but I thought Been A While would've better.. just cause of the beat and the beatbox.

Re. Brit's futur performance @ the VMAs

Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer of this year's VMAs, said "You can expect the things we want and expect from Britney — that will all be there,". [...] "What I've seen of it is great. She'll be dancing, performing, doing her thing. That's exactly what we all want. Fans that are familiar with her performance on previous VMAs will not be disappointed."

Go to http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1568994/20070906/spears_britney.jhtml if you want some update on that matter. Thought some of you'd like to know.

For those who are not interested on watching the hole VMAs ceremony GREAT news. Britney's OPENING THE SHOW. yeah !!!! :D

Madonna?

Is Madonna still doing the collaboration with Justin Timberlake? I hope not, but that could make for quite an interesting night.

Gimme More

Here, by the way, is "Gimme More," the single she'll debut at the VMAs. Pure dance-floor fluff = Britney how we like her.

Christina over Britney

I still just dont get how Britney is more popular then Christina. I mean Christina gorgeous, sweet, never hear her name in some headlines. and most importantly she can sing. So I just don't get how she is not more popular then Britney. Is it because britney  puts her name in headlines  even when she is doing something stupid. And one other thing with britney; If I was blind I would swear I was listening to a dead frog that just got ran over by a steamroller crying for help. Sorry ladies but thats just my opinion.

I have to agree about Christina

And while we're on the topic of Christina...I think she sings better and is a better performer than Mariah Carey! I still don't get the Mariah Carey thing at all. I might just be blind and deaf though.

BTW...I do like that short hairdo on Britney...and she does have a pretty head...

Britney's Performance

It looked like she was nervous and from what I have been reading online.. apparently the MTV VMA producer's pulled Brit's and Criss Angel's Orginal Performance at the last minute. As they were supposed to work together to do some magic and illunsion stunts. Which kinda sucked.. cause I was looking forward them two put out all the stops for her performance.. but the producer's apparently freaked at the last minute due to insurance too.

I think she could've done better, but lets re-account for what she's been through.. she hasn't done a big gig like the VMA's in awhile.. not to mention she seems to have lost her confidence.. you can tell by her nervous she was on the stage.

But I still think she tried.. not her best, but atleast she didn't stumble or anything.. I thought was ok. She looked like in good shape and I hope she will get her groove back before her album is released.

Britney Spears = OVER

Britney was a hot mess last night @ the VMA's

She was in good shape though, I agree on that...

Yep, it's over.

Jeez, where to start? She wasn't overweight...but she really did NOT need to be wearing that two piece outfit.

I honestly feel that she popped pills before her performance and they kicked in just as she went on stage. She didn't come across as nervous to me...she came across as out of it, just barely aware of what was going on around her and phoned in her entire performance. No feeling, no emotion, nothing. She was upstaged by her own backup dancers. When the backups are pulling out all the stops, getting the crowd going more than the main attraction, and look like they actually WANT to be performing more than the star they're with does, then something is seriously wrong.

Another thing, if that's the song she's going to be "coming back" with, it is over. "Gimme More" sounds more like a mid 90's minor club hit than the monster, over the top, pop song she needs to make a major dent on the song charts with. "Oops...", "Baby, One More Time", "Stronger", "Overprotected" are by FAR more superior than "Gimme More". Even her covers of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "I Love Rock and Roll" (which were downright awful) are better than "Gimme More". If this is all she has to offer, then she might as well hang up the scanty outfits and dance shoes, because the writing is on the wall, she's done.

I used to be a fan of hers, although I stopped just before the whole thing with K-Fed happened, but I would like to see her get her act together and do something worthwhile. I know she's been through alot, I'd like to see her channel all that and come out with an awesome album. Problem is, she doesn't seem to want it anymore, and that's sad.

Hm...

Well, she can dance, I'll give her that.

-BUT-

I can't stand the way she sings. It's that odd croaky thing she does before some of the words she sings. If it happened every once in a while (once or twice a song, at the most) it would actually be kind of sexy and interesting, as all little vocal oddities can be, but it's all over the place and it just makes it sound like she can't sing.

But, yeah, she can dance.
