We are women, hear us roar, see us inspireGod bless women! Can I get an amen? While it may seem redundant to sing the praises of women on a site for gay/bi women, I say we can never lift our voices high enough when it comes to the truly inspirational women of this world. I’ve always looked to other women, real and fictional, as my role models. Whenever I’m feeling a little down, I use their wit and wisdom to lift me up. Whether on the big or small screen, something about the righteous (or riotous) indignation of a woman is just so satisfying. It practically sizzles.
So in honor of Scribegrrrl’s impending departure (sob, sniffle, bawl!), let’s burn bright with sisterfire today. The Linster and I have assembled some of the best speechifying by fabulous female characters to celebrate the fabulous female that is Scribe. Bette Porter (The L Word): No additional explanation required. Julia Sugarbaker (Designing Women): Sugarbaker sisterhood is powerful. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer): Are you ready to be strong? Miranda Bailey (Grey’s Anatomy): Five rules to live by. C.J. Cregg (The West Wing): With friends like these. Captain Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager): Live long and, well, you know. Thanks for the memories. Feel free to share your own favorite female character moments below. So, now can I get that amen? Amen, sister! Amen!

Buffy made way too many
Buffy made way too many speeches in season 7, but this one is a keeper. It still gives me a lump in my throat.
Weird that my two favorite TV heroines, Xena and Janeway, never made any big feminist speeches.
Agreed, way too many speeches in Buffy Season 7
Which made Andrew's bit in Storyteller even funnier. I think this one was was the best, not because of the words, but the accompanying visuals. The little girl at bat gets me every time I see it.
All these clips are great, but there will ever only be one Julia Sugarbaker.
Your friend,
Rusty

Amen! Because you do not cross a Sugarbaker woman!
These are awesome! I tried to find Liz Lemon's shout out to 'Designing Women' from the 30 Rock ep. 'The C Word', but NBC wouldn't allow it on youtube, I'm assuming...Julia 'The Terminator' Sugarbaker was totally a proto-Bette Porter; I always thought her and Mary Jo were a secret couple, but that's just me.
You do not cross a sugarbaker woman
CJ Cregg
what a legend!
she was one of the characters that made the west wing the phonomenom that it is today! who can't love her!
and she was nearly a lesbian (see season 7) dammit so close
anyways just to reiterate that CJ is a legend! and the west wing would be nothing without her, infact society would be nothing without her!
Amen!
Ms. Beals does a good women empowerment speech in real life:

Great clips! I am now all ready to be strong, speak the truth in press conferences, while running after my boss and tossing a baton!
Oh heck, here's another amen and a "happy trails" to scribegrrrl.
More Bailey love!!
Gettin what she needs

The best Bailey speech ever!!

Ah, Buffy...
That speech gave me the chill the first time I saw it...ok, actually, it still does :P
Explain to me how in the
Explain to me how in the world Buff makes the list, but somehow Xena doesn't quite make the cut. She is a great role model for women, despite the fact she was an evil warlord in the past. 'Course, that is what makes her even greater, she can overcome that dark side of her, and become even stronger, fighting for the greater good.
Even in death, Gabrielle, I will never leave you.
Xena not so big on the speeches...
She inspires by simply kicking butt. So definitely inspiring, but not for this type of list.
Now Gabrielle....I'm sure we could find an inspiring speech by the bard, no?
Oh definitely
The speech Gabrielle gave to the Amazons to inspire them in To Helicon and Back.
Sweet.
If Xena speaks, she tells valuable truths with few words. It's called effectiveness (and good writing). Speeches are for politicians, warriors don't need them. Actions speak louder then words.
But Gabby giving this speech to the Amazons reminds me of something:
"Is an Amazon Queen stronger than a Warrior Princess?" - "Why don't you just try to find out yourself?" - "Uhmm...no, better not."
I heart Buffy
Man I miss that show. And inspirational? It's basically my guide to life. I agree with cosmiccowgirl about the general season 7 speechiness, but god that one was good.
awesome!
Man, I miss CJ. And that Buffy speech is the best.
Did I say "wow" already? 'Cause, wow. And thank you.
You don't know how happy it
What about Sydney?
Is there anything...
More empowering than women who can just release their passion through words! Those clips all gave me chills and goosebumps not to mention made me feel pretty damn proud to be a woman!
And as a tribute to our beloved Scribegrrl they were even more inspiring!!
Definitely burning bright with the sisterfire tonight!!
Video Tribute for Scribe
I tried to think of a good video send-off for Scribe, but hit a couple walls...first, I suck at searching the Internet for videos and second, I didn't know exactly what to look for. I mean, how do you pay tribute to Scribe properly?
So I started thinking about Scribe's past posts and comments and tried to determine what my favorite Scribegrrrl moment was. I figured if I could narrow it down to a few topics, finding a video would be easy. It didn't take long for something to come to mind.
My absolute favorite Scribegrrrl post/comments ever were in response to another dorothy snarker blog post:
Followed by:
Kate: But, but ... do you like my hair like this?
Scribe: Does your hair have Sara's number?
Seriously. That. Was. Funny. (and so, so true).
So, Scribe, to celebrate your time on AE and to wish you well on your new endeavors, I offer you this video...it's not a speech, but it is empowering and inspirational and, of course, stars the beautiful Sara Ramirez.

What? I don't know what you're talking about...that's inspirational. Sure, no one's really saying anything, but the video definitely says something to me. You'd rather I posted this?
Jokes aside, best of luck, Scribe.

this article just made my day
thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this article up. i had a traumatic morning class this morning filled with completely ignorent people and i literally had to stand up for women and feminism as THE ONLY student who could articulate the fact that women are not "below men" as one of the other students (with whom i have to work with in group projects on a weekly basis) stated.
i am SO happy that this article was posted because after that hour from hell, this was exactly how i needed to unwind tonight.
:(
Trinity
There was a great little one in The Matrix (the first one) where Neo insists he's going to rescue Morpheus by himself, and Trinity gives him a short verbal ass-kicking about why she's going, too, and, quote, "as I am the ranking officer on this ship, if you don't like it, you can go to hell - because you're not going anywhere else."
There's no Youtube clip of it, unfortunately, but that scene? Yeah.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Trinity is totally my root. ;)
Sydney Bristow
First off, Buffy's "are you ready to be strong" speech is . . . damn, I need a thesaurus . . . it's great! Oh! (I thought of something better than "great") It kicks ass! Who needs a thesaurus, her speech kicks ass! Actually, Buffy in general kicks ass.
So, like the subject line says, Sydney Bristow -- I can't think of any good speechifying done by her but with the help of a friend I did find this kick ass video on youtube. What? I happen to find kick ass women to be very inspirational. I also found this video, I don't know how inspirational it really is, but it's got funny captions.
"And That Was The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia!"
Sweet Marie! Afterellen & The Sugarbaker women? Can it be?!? Thank you sooooo much for posting one of my favorite Julia rants! Julia Sugarbaker was and still is my ultimate role model in life. Posied, brilliant, beautiful - and can kick your ass with nothing but her tounge!
Amen!

Singing Praises Should Never Be Redundant
Brilliant article, inspirational women should be brought to attention more often
scribe you rock and will be missed, good luck with your new venture.
the buffy speech is amazing and really inspires me.
If Things Get Too Real, Promise To Take Me Somewhere Else
What about Dorothy Zbornak?
Or Sophia Petrillo?
Love the Golden Girls.
And I don't remember much about Maude, too young when it was on, but did she ever have any inspiring speeches?
I don't think Maude did a lot of speechifying
But she had some of the best one-liners:
Maude Findlay: Walter, if you lay one hand on that kid then all your friends will be dressed in black and driving with their lights on.
Your friend,
Rusty
http://lezbang.com/
Darlene Conner
That's all.
AMEN!
Omg!
Omg! Scribegrrl is leaving? What/when/why? Where have I been!? I'm so lost and sad :( She's like 80% of the reason that I visit to this website (daily, even when I'm suppose to be paying attention to my classwork). Ugh, who am I gonna swoon for/crush on now? *SIGH* my heart.... but yah for this blog :)
I am what I am. Love me or hate me. Just consider me.
less of a speech...
and more of a passing comment really.
BadGirls - Series Two, Episode Seven
Nikki Wade: Look Helen, you’re not abnormal, you’re not normal, you’re just you.
So quick it almost goes unnoticed... almost!
Yeah..Wait, Huh? Scribe is leaving?
Iron-Jawed Angels
Strength...
Hmm my pics are Xena & Gabrielle, Haruka & Michiru from SailormoonS (not the american verison), Buffy & Willow (duh), definately Nikki Wade, Samantha from Sex In the City ( her "I have cancer speech") and Karen Walker because despite being drunk, pillpopping, rude, snarky socialite she had a heart of gold and was alway there if you needed her.
I'm sure if I took more time I could think of some more, but I have to get back to work eventually. Love you Scribe...take care.

Julia Julia Julia.. What a woman!
2 of my favorite Julia Sugarbaker tirades.. Just thought I would share. Julia always embodied the true Southern Belle..
JULIA: Yes, you can give him a message. You do take shorthand, don't you? Good, we take it in the South too. Anyway, just tell him that I have been a Southerner all my life, and I can vouche for the fact the we do eat a lot of things down here........ and we've certainly all had our share of grits and biscuits and gravy, and I myself have probably eaten enough fried chicken to feed a third world country ---- not to mention barbecue, cornbread, watermelon, fried pies, okra, and ...........yes.........if I were being perfectly candid, I would have to admit we have also eaten our share of crow, and for all I know --- during the darkest, leanest years of the Civil War, some of us may have had a Yankee or two for breakfast. But........... speaking for myself and hundreds of thousands of my Southern ancestors who have evolved through many decades of poverty, strife, and turmoil, I would like for Mr. Weaks to know that we have surely eaten many things in the past, and we will surely eat many things in the future, but --- God as my witness - -- we have never, I repeat, NEVER EATEN DIRT!!!
JULIA: I'm saying I want you and your equipment out of here now. If you are looking for somebody to suck pearls, then I suggest you try finding yourself and oyster. Because I am not a woman who does that, as a matter of fact, I don't know any woman who does that, because it's stupid. And it doesn't have any more to do with decorating than having cleavage and looking sexy has to do with working in a bank. These are not pictures about the women of Atlanta. These are about just the same thing they're always about. And it doesn't matter whether the clothes are on or off.........it's just the same ol' message. And I don't care how many pictures you've taken of movie stars --- when you start snapping photos of serious, successful businessmen like Donald Trump and Lee Iacocca in unzipped jumpsuits with wet lips, straddling chairs, then we'll talk.Grace McAllister?
Ooh , CJ!
i love it when
