Wanda Sykes: so funny, it’s criminal

While perusing new movie trailers, I came across one for Evan Almighty. I had put this comedy and sequel-of-sorts to Bruce Almighty on my maybe list of summer movies, based solely on the strength of Steve Carell’s endearing comedic squareness and Lauren Graham's endearing comedic hotness. But after seeing the full-length trailer, my meter tipped from maybe to almost definitely. Why? One word: Wanda.

Wanda Sykes, that wisest of wisecrackers, is one of the most consistently sidesplitting women around. She is guaranteed talk-show gold. Whenever I see her name on the roster, I make sure to tune in (same goes for Amy Sedaris, but that is another topic for another post). Heck, Wanda even makes Jay Leno bearable.

But after seeing Wanda’s five seconds of screen time in the trailer, I started to worry. Would this be another patented Wanda Sykes paratrooper job? One where she parachutes in, throws a hilarity grenade and then is airlifted out for the remainder of the war movie? Why has this criminally funny lady become so criminally underused?

Wanda has been shoehorned into the smartass sidekick/funny friend slot, like her role on The New Adventures of Old Christine (Full Disclosure: I don’t watch regularly, but the three episodes I have seen had a pitiful with-Wanda-to-without-Wanda ratio). Sure, she had a shot at stardom in her own right in 2003 with her short-lived show Wanda at Large. But it failed to click, so she went back to being the riotous Robin to everyone else’s boring Batman. Still, I believe she can be so much more. Don’t forget that other comic who spent a good chunk of her early career as the funny best friend. I don’t know, perhaps you’ve heard of her ... some shrinking violet named Rosie O’Donnell. I’m just saying.

Speaking of lesbian talk show hosts, Wanda is also a favorite of Ellen Degeneres’. She helped Ellen celebrate her birthday earlier this year in a conversation that included my new personal catchphrase: “Gay is the new black.”

i rmb her from 'monster-in-law', 'down to earth' and 'over the hedge', man, her voice is so distinct, and she's helluva funny woman.definitely underused.

So we're just going to ignore that fact that she's gay as a goose. Gayer than springtime in Paris. Gayer than Broadway. Gayer than... You get the point. Besides she pulled the open secret gay partner trick. During the Ellen interview, there were no mention of pronouns when refering to who she was with.

...

This is one gay rumor I haven't heard of before. It'd great if she were.

Out magazine

Wanda was outed by Out magazine. The same article also outed Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper.

Crank Yankers

I have loved Wanda for a long time. I def see movies just because she is in them. But my favorite Wanda pieces are her Crank Yanker parts. They are prank phone calls that are then recreated with puppets. Here is one that is just the audio that is called Conjugal Visit:

There is another great one where Wanda says she picks up her car from the repair guys and there is poo in the car. It is the best but I can't find it on YouTube. She's just great.

It was actually very easy to find on youtube. I wasn't looking for it specifically but when I put in Wanda Sykes, it was the second video that came up.

Wanda Sykes is one of my

Wanda Sykes is one of my fave comedians, right up there with Ellen, Russell Peters and Carlos Mencia.

Until people are ready, I'm gonna wait til she gets her own show (again).

Mama want a thin mint

Wanda Sykes is the best. Have you seen her on some of those E! programs like the '100 Best F---ups in TV history' type things. She's the funniest one commentating.

Yep, she's going to steal the show right from under Golden Graham's nose. Sorry, Lauren.

"Mama wants a thin mint"

HILARIOUS. I love how she makes the talk show hosts pee their pants.

And did you see her throw the softball in the montage? SOOO gay.

Okay not really, but she would be a fun date.

Love me some Wanda

She gets my vote to replace Rosie on The View.

The View

Great idea!

If that would happen, I would actually watch The View.

Wanda

I would crawl across a floor strewn with broken glass if I thought I'd get to meet Wanda. Everytime I eat a thin mint I chuckle!

Love Wanda too, but you know if/when you write this post, I shall be its biggest fan.

Not really

I don't think she's that funny. I saw her special on Comedy Central a long while ago, and she did this whole bit on "Monica Lewinsky's nasty ass" and "drink man" and I damn near died of laughter and thought she was the new break out comedian, and I've looked for her in tv shows and movies and have been nothing but disappointed. One of my favorite Comedians

Yeah I've been following Wanda since she was on the Chris Rock Show. She's a secret weapon but I think she's gonna hit big someday. She definately sets off my dar(see the celebrity poker showdown with her and Rosario Dawso) I don't really care about her sexuality but if you've seen her throw a softball, you know she's at the very least Bi.

Starting the day with laughter

What a great way to start the day at 6 AM!   Thanks for the clips.  Her Tongue Untied DVD is hilarious, one of a handfull I actually own.  Her website, http://www.wandasykes.com/media.php , contains a few audio clips which are hilarious, someone mentioned them earlier.  I also saw her on the poker showdown with Rosario.  It was one of the funniest collection of people I've ever seen, especially with Travis Tritt in the mix.  Wanda was hilarious dissin' on him, she had him in stitches.  Wish I could see her in person, she's the best!

Love Her

I love Wanda - she's not side-splitting funny as yet, but she's definitely getting better and better. I do find myself watching movies just because she's in them. Will definitely be watching this up-coming one. She's like a cross between Whoopi, Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer....lol

why is it?

that feminine women aren't questioned when it's found out that they are gay but not so feminine women like Wanda are automatically questioned about being straight whether or not she's mentioned anything about it.  I've heard her talk about sex with men,  never about sex with women but yet a lot of people are absolutely convinced that she's gay.  Of course, she COULD be... but I try not to make assumptions about people.  Just curious... does less than feminine characteristics and mannerisms automatically make you gay?
bklnyhavot's picture

curious

How is she not feminine or in your words "not so feminine"? Is it because her hair is short? And is it a coincidence that her short and, presumably, not so feminine hair happens to be unpermed? Is it because she's a comedian? Is Brett Butler feminine, is Rosanne? Is it her aesthetic quality? Is it her command of the stage? Is it her ethnicity? See how one description or ---ahem-- assumption can open up a can of worms? I think she seems very queer friendly(use of gender neutral pronouns, playfully accusing a woman of having a crush on her and so on) and I think that's what people have noticed.

JennyJen's picture

just my opinion

I don't consider her feminine because of her demeanor.  Has nothing to do with her hair or ethnicity or anything else.  She just has what I consider a mildly masculine swagger if you will.   I could be wrong but I don't think it's her queer friendliness that makes some of us think she's gay.

Stereotypes make things easier

Years ago when she was married and wore her hair longer I never even considered she might be gay. Now she's divorced and wears her hair short, I can't help wondering if she is ... Her latest HBO special is hilariously funny. (The one where she talks about abortion/detaching your vagina). She's not funny all the time, but she definitely has some killer moments.

HBO

Ooh, I saw Sick and Tired and I don't know if I have ever laughed so hard!  I don't know if she's gay but she's a comedic genius!  I think I'm one of those who thinks she's funny all the time. :)
