"Twilight" teaser trailer sees daylight

I've always had a bit of a thing for vampires. They're immortal. They're dangerous. They're night owls. Now, my vampire thing doesn't extend to putting on pointy teeth or biting the unsuspecting (well, not unless they ask). And I live in California, so I clearly love the sun. Still, I've watched way more than my fair share of sucky vampire movies. Which is why I was a little surprised I hadn't clued into Twilight sooner.

You can see why I might have missed the best-selling young-adult book series by Stephenie Meyer. Harry Potter notwithstanding, it's simply the wrong age bracket. While I'd heard chatter both on AfterEllen.com and elsewhere about the film, I hadn't paid close attention. I had my teenage vampire movie, thank you very much. It was called Lost Boys. But then, well, then I saw the teaser trailer.

Gulp. Now this might actually be something I could, pardon my puns, really sink my teeth into. The star-crossed lovers meets Buffy/Angel vibe is palpable. The film stars Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, a newly transferred high school student drawn to her mysterious classmate Edward Cullen (Harry Potter alum Robert Pattinson).

The catch, of course, is that Edward is a vampire. In fact, everyone in his "family" is a vampire. The good news, though, is that they're "vegetarian" vampires, feeding on animals instead of humans. Is there a vampire PETA?

The film is intriguing on a few levels. First, the oh-so-brief teaser looks cool. That van scene is just, well, neat. Second, Kristen and Robert's chemistry clicks in the few seconds we see them together. And the intriguing cast, which includes Puccini for Beginners star Elizabeth Reaser and Thirteen star Nikki Reed. The film is also poised to be Kristen's a-star-is-born moment.

But it's the folks behind the scenes who really make things interesting. Helming the project is Thirteen director Catherine Hardwicke. The director's varied credits include the 2003 Evan Rachel Wood teenage-girl-gone-wild flick Thirteen as well as the surf/skateboard film Lords of Dogtown and the self-explanatory The Nativity Story. Wow, from promiscuous teens to skater dudes to the Virgin Mary — and now teenage vampire lovers. Way to not get pigeonholed.

So, are you a Twilighter (as the fans call themselves)? And, fan or not, does the teaser make you want to take a bite, so to speak?

Hopefully

The movie will be better than the book.

I love the cast, but Stephanie Meyer's writing is akin to very bad fanfiction.

I won't be able to take the movie seriously because of ONTD though.

:)

I...

Can not wait! This movie looks badass! I read the book but, the movie looks better.

Just what I was thinking

"Stephanie Meyer's writing is akin to very bad fanfiction."

lol. That's just what I was thinking the entire way through the series. I predict this movie will flop though. I like vampire movies in general, but the trailer for this does not apeal to me.

Besides, my friends obsessed with the series have said they're not going to watch it so it can't "ruin" it for them, and if the fans aren't watching the movie who is?

actually, most of the book's fans are really excited about the film. A case such as your friends is rare.  :)

Twilight

(There were typos in her books. Her editor should be fired) I agree and well said I might add. Meyer's writing is rather lacking in my opinion. She tries but I always walk away thinking that a 15 year old wrote it. It barely scratches underneath the surface. Anyways...I'm not in love with the casting. I think the movie won't do as well as they expect it to but I must say I'm happy Elizabeth Reaser is in it. She's beautiful and I think is a good choice as Esme. But the guy playing her husband to me is not going to come off as a wise, pacivist. Why I read the books I have no idea, I contend it to boredom. Overall Joss Whedon and the writers on Buffy created a more interesting storyline than what Meyers offers. As much as I enjoy watching Reaser's acting I will not be seeing this...renting may seem to be a better option.

Looks good

Looks like a good movie.  I havn't actually read the book but was introduced to the story while on the spencer/ashley forum where someone turned the story into a spashey fanfic with ashley being the vampire.

Buffy days

It looks ok- I'm sure like me, all of you have seen more than one or two bad vamp flicks in your time. I'd mention a few, but I don't want to admit to anything on my first comment lol. This one looks not half bad. He flew!

As for the Buffy and Angel vibe? Let's face it - it worked before. There was always going to be someone out there who would try it again. And I miss the Buffy days. Moonlight is good also, but I think your obsessive teen days are just that. Your teen days. Once they're over, so is all the drama. So I don't find myself going, "oh god! you'll never guess what's happening next episode!" anymore. Hence, I miss the Buffy days.

But I will go see it. I take it that's not a UK release date, though?

Looks pretty good though, I'll probably drag my gf along to see it. I've never heard of the books though, might have to look them up.

amen to that

ha i miss those buffy days too..nothings quite matched up to it since! god, i remember how emotional i got after "the becoming" episodes...shame on me! and also, i was gutted when Faith left...but that wasnt so much the emotional trauma of the storyline...but was more to do with the fact the Eliza Dushku is hot!

Lost Boys

I love The Lost Boys.  My dad used to make me watch the films he saw when he was a teen, so I've always enjoyed the vampire and scifi films from the 80's.  This film...I'm just not feeling it. I don't know why, I liked Underworld and am a huge BTVS fan...but something is different about this one, just not going for it.

Twilight good Read for All Ages

Dorothy, you probably don’t have teen daughters begging you to read this Twilight series…in a weak moment I gave in.  WOW, I was totally suck in…now I can’t get enough.

The Twilight Series is a beautiful love story for ages…with deep love and passion! There’s something magical about this series…you fall in love with all the characters.  I feel the real attraction is the deep love and passion of the two main characters, coupled with a “true sense of family and commitment” of the Cullens…which is quite refreshing considering this isn’t promoted very much in the media these daysL

My daughters and I are constantly talking about the movie and the characters…great bonding opportunities;) Thank you Stephenie Meyer and Summit!!!

Quoting:

- - aren't all these movies about teen rebelion? The first two are pretty obvious, and with Mary, that whole 'Immaculate Conception' thing was kind of rebelling against 'the norm'. I'm sure her parents just wanted her to 'Marry a Nice Jewish Boy' (well, Man; wasn't Joseph quite a bit older?), not give birth to The Messiah! Nothing like an out-of-wedlock pregnancy to piss off the 'rents! =)
[no intention to offend - I realize this may be a serious subject to some readers, but I've always though of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph with good senses of humour, so please just consider this as 'respectful teasing']

Quoting again: "Is there a vampire PETA?" Do you mean like "VETM" (Vampires for the Ethical Treatment of Mortals)? Because sucking human blood would actually be the ultimate way for them to Treat Animals Ethically!

I'm really hopefull for this - I've had a crush on Kristen since 'Speak', and I'd watch her read a phonebook! <3 <3 <3 ....maybe she'll follow in Willow's footsteps! (^_~) Well, a girl can dream, can't she?

I'm glad to see that the vampires have licked that 'Bursting into Flames in Daylght' problem - Really good sunblock? Or are they in the Pacific Northwest, with so little sunshine, people don't tan, they rust? In 'Buffy', at least the vamps were biodegradable - gotta 'Think Green', aftter all.

I haven't read the books (yet?), but I'll watch out for "Twilight" (12-12-08 is a hella long wait), Thanks!

ps: gotta lurve the tagline: "The Forbidden Fruit Tastes the Sweetest" - That, I can really relate to! :giggle: ...on several levels!

I'm obsessed with this

I'm obsessed with this series..... like cant eat, cant sleep, cant breathe, without it Buffy The Vampire Slayer type obsession OBSESSED :)

It certainly is a novel for all ages.  My step mother (age 40) has read the books FOUR TIMES IN A ROW (and begged me to load the audiobooks on her ipod yesterday).

The pretentious "i'm too good for silly teen vampire stories" may not get it but if you love fiction that lets you escape and characters that jump off of the page and into your LIFE- it is a series that cant be missed.

And the movie? Is going to be AWESOME

Also, this is actually just a sneak peek for the trailer. The real trailer should be revealed friday.

http://twilightthemovie.com has a countdown!

start playing gay roles! come on...how long can this girl stay in the closet? =P

Yep.

The books are the ultimate in cheesy mind candy, but I own all of them, and I'll probably see the movie opening day. Vampires are my Achilles heel and always will be.

oomg

i don't think i have ever been more excited about a movie in my life :D

I have to agree with the

I have to agree with the others who said that the books read like bad fanfic. They drive me crazy! But then they're also pretty compelling as a love-story, despite my misgivings. I really understand why teenaged girls love them. I do want to reach into the books and shake a personality into Bella. Other than loving Edward and being a klutz, what is there? The teaser does look fantastic though and I'm sure I'll go see it. Support Cedric Diggory! Er... wait.

Anyway, for vampire books, I'd recommend Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld books. Great women. Heterosexual so far, but still great! And for supernatural teen stuff, Libba Bray's books are great. And more than a hint of queerness in them. Yay!

Wishful thinking

One can only hope Kristen Stewart turns out to be family. =)

Oh the shame...

I must be one of the extremely few lesbians that have never really watched Buffy, except for the odd 15 minutes when I was bored and didn't have anything else to watch (I did like Angel though). I'm a massive fan of Xena and kinda fell into the Xena vs Buffy argument but maybe I'll watch it someday, I do love vampires after all...

Anyway, I've never read the Twilight series so I might pick them up sometime. The film looks like it's going to be really great or really bad, so I might get my friends to come see it with me if the reviews are good closer to the time.

VAMPIRES ARE HOT!!!!!! What we need in this world are more sexy, non-psychotic, bad-ass (but not evil), lesbian vampires.

And Kristen Stewart looks hot too. Maybe I should see this film anyway...
