TV Alert: "Saving Grace" returns for more sin and salvationAre you ready to embrace your Grace? The hit cable drama Saving Grace returns tonight to TNT and with it comes the hardest working, hardest drinking, hardest partying, hardest hitting female detective on television. A bold statement, sure, but this is Holly Hunter we're talking about. Don't make her to pull out the Oscar, because she can. Plus, what other Academy Award-winner poses with a barbed wire fence?
The series enters its sophomore season just as feisty as its first. Last season ended on a cliffhanger with Grace confronting Father Patrick, the priest who sexually abused her as a little girl. And, before we move on — yes, Grace has had a superhuman amount of tragedy in her life. She was sexually abused as a child, raped and assaulted by a killer as an adult and had her sister die in the Oklahoma City bombing. No wonder she drinks.
Holly aside, I was a tad leery of the series in the beginning. First there was the whole tough girl with a troubled life thing. Why whenever a woman is good at her job must she have a screwy private life? Then there was the whole Touched by a My Name is Earl aspect. A bubba angel is her last chance for salvation? M'kay. And, finally, there was just crime drama fatigue. I know it's sacrilege given the untold number of hours of my live I've given to nearly all the Law & Order and CSI franchises.
But then a funny thing happened. I watched and I couldn't stop watching. A lot of it was Holly, but everything, from the setting to spirituality, worked for me. The supporting cast, from Laura San Giacomo as Grace's best friend to Lorraine Toussaint as her captain and — of course — Leon Rippy as her angel Earl, was rock solid.
Plus, I wanted to see how it all worked out. Does the Big G (or whatever name you'd like to give him/her) have a grand plan for Grace? And where does death row inmate Leon, who shares Earl with Grace as his last chance angel, fit into it? Interesting stuff. Also country star Gretchen Wilson recorded a video for the show to “Work Hard, Play Harder.” If Gretchen tells me to do something, I'm inclined to do it. She looks like she could kick my ass in a bar fight.
Of course it doesn't hurt that at age 50, the Whippet-thin Holly doesn't mind getting her kit off for the cameras. I knew there was a reason I paid my cable bill each month.
So, will you tune into the season premiere? Did you watch the freshman season? And did you catch Erin Daniels guest starring?

Seriously disturbing
I love this show, but I confess, there are some scenes I can't watch. Almost. It's fascinating and disturbing, sometimes. Grace is wide open. There is no slow down, wait a minute in her.
So I'll be watching again this season. There's something sneaky about Earl. He likes his assignment with Grace way too much. But there's something even more wrong about Grace, playing cat and mouse with a sick, twisted angel who, she is sure, is working an angle on her. She investigates him like she does mcriminals. And most disturbing of all, in Grace's mind, there is little difference between those criminals she chases with such abandon and those who may be sent to save her. Not much difference between heaven and hell in her mind.
I like the music too.

That 'Earl' character should
Saving Grace...
I too was uncertain at first about Saving Grace, but Holly Hunter was enough to pull me in and the strength of her performance week after week, plus the camaraderie between her and the other actors on the show (in particular Laura San Giacomo) makes for great TV.
The best part of my Monday's is that now we have 2 kick-ass women back to back to watch on Monday nights, with Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer followed by Holly Hunter in Saving Grace... that certainly makes my Mondays a lot more enjoyable!
P.S. I almost forgot that we also have new Weeds every Monday night with the spectacular Mary Louise Parker! TV on Monday night rules!

Have a seat, AE
Yes, yes, and yes.
Now all we need is a mini-recap (hint, hint).
Ditto
We need recaps!
I watched season #1 and I can't wait for season 2# to begin!
Oooooh, I love a bit of cake. Oooooh, cake. Oooooh, cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. I'm just one of these people. I come home and I need a piece of cake. [Marjorie Dawes]
Dear Ms. Dorothy...
Your blog here convinced me to give Saving Grace another shot last night.
I am a big-time fan of The Closer and tried a few times with Holly and Grace but I couldn't quite wrap my mind around it...or maybe I didn't want to because a lot of the subject matter is hard to deal with...even though The Closer is no walk in the park, either.
And last night...wow oh wow oh wow...I am not even sure what to say about what went on...but it really drew me in. Very tough stuff to watch and yet, I could not change the channel.
Saving TV...
I love both Saving Grace and The Closer. I am in 'hog heaven' on Mon nights. My DVR is primed and full or great episodes (Mon they have a Closer marathon and I caught up on the ones I missed)
Great ensemble on 'Grace'. I love Earl and Rhetta (my 2 faves). Also, was nice to see Erin guest starring.
I look forward to this season and the progression of the story. I'm a mush for the 'Touched by an Angel" "Joan of Arcadia" type of shows. This is just more of an R rated version of them.
