TV Alert: Brace yourself for another round of "Damages"

Damages has never really been about the law. Sure, it’s about lawyers. But the Emmy-winning series has always been more of a complicated moral mystery than a legal drama. And as mysteries go, few had me on the edge of my seat more than its first season. So with the second season set to start tonight on FX, I can’t wait to see what twists and turns the show has in store. From the promo poster alone, I know it’s going to be great.

Part of what made the show so great is also what made it hard for some people to get into. If you missed anything in the dense plot following high-powered attorney Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and her young protégé Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) you could easily get lost. Patty took Ellen on to help with a large class-action suit. But, as with almost everything in Damages, all was not as it seemed.

In the second season, the chess match between the two women continues.

Last season the mystery was who killed Ellen’s fiancé and then tried to have her killed. (Answers 1: the man the class-action suit was against, Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson); Answer 2: Patty herself.) This season it looks like Ellen is seeking revenge and working with the FBI to take Patty down.

This season also features a new case, involving a man from Patty’s past (played by William Hurt), and a new man for Ellen (played by Timothy Olyphant). Heck, there’s even another high-powered female lawyer for Patty to spar with (played by Marcia Gay Harden).

That’s a whole lot of impressive acting talent in one place. But none are as impressive as the magnificent (and magnificently scary) Glenn. With her immaculately-pressed power suits and steely-blue gaze, her Patty Hewes is one of the great antiheroes of modern television.

So are you ready to strap in for another season of treachery and deceit, murder and corruption?

I'm ready!

I love this show! But I watched the whole first season on DVD in a couple of days, so it will be weird to have to wait a whole week between episodes. I hope I can keep up with what's going on.

I don't really get what Arthur Frobisher is still doing on the series. I thought Ted Danson was brilliant in that role (and I NEVER thought I would use "Ted Danson" and "brilliant" in the same sentence), but I hope they move on to a new case and don't continue to spin out the Frobisher thing. He lost. Move on.

Is it wrong to think Ellen's foot on Patty's throat is kind of hot?

I'm so excited for season

I'm so excited for season 2! Glenn Close is brilliant, and if season 2 is anything like season 1, I'll be glued to my TV Wednesday nights.

I always thought Patty and Ellen had great chemisty.

Can't wait!

I watched the whole last season on DVD in less than a week and like Cosmiccowgirl, it will be strange to wait a week between episodes. But my partner and I are hooked on this show. (She doesn't even like to watch TV that often, but this show has pulled us both in.) The storyline is compelling and the acting amazing. Can't wait!

yeah

its a little creepy, a little suspenseful, and most of all it has a great cast....I only wish there were more episodes per season but when you have movie quality stars...you will take what you can get.

Now, this is simply a

Now, this is simply a fantastic show, amazing production values, writing, acting, cinematography, best pilot I've ever seen, and I love that it's very much a show about women without relaying women to the 'women's' storylines that every other show about women does.

That said - it's still got very prevailing negative messages that make me sad. Patty, the powerful, successful woman is evil - both in being a bitca to those around her and in that she has sold her soul. And the more success Ellen gets, the more she becomes like the soulless Patty. Even Patty's 'advice' to Ellen when she told her that in her marriage she just lets her husband do the talking - it's not very feminist and as bad as what comes from lesser shows. Add to that the fact that the only gay character is a closeted man, married to a woman, whose much-younger crush had to let him down gently and whose big gay secret threatened to ruin his life and ultimately contributed to his suicide. It's not very promising!

However I still adore the story and think that along with 30 Rock it's the best thing on TV in years and will definitely watch.

Thanks for this

Thanks for your thoughtful comments--I haven't seen the show yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it more having been prepared for the negatives you mention.

I love it when AfterEllen members share smart opinions like this!

I just want to know if

I just want to know if katie(ellen's almost sister-in-law) is still going to be on. I always thought that Ellen had more chemistry with her than she did with her actual fiance.

She's not on the IMDB, but I thought I saw her in a promo pic the other day.

Just watched it...

and I'm happy! I've been looking forward this show (and Season 2 of In Treatment) very much and I'm glad it's back. I'm nervous though because I want to be as genius and good as the first season and it's a tough call...

Wardrobe

Where can you buy the power suits that Glenn Close wears?  I love the tailoered shirts with the 2 button collars.
