"Tin Man" brings us a brave new Oz

Who here likes The Wizard of Oz? Clearly, not me. I mean, it’s not like I've taken a name or an affinity for red shoes or a fear of tornadoes (What? I grew up in the Midwest) from the iconic movie musical or anything. So when I heard that the Sci Fi Channel was going to "boldly reimagine" the classic story, I wasn’t sure if I should click my heels or summon the winged monkeys.

Based on L. Frank Baum’s novel, Tin Man is been described as a “sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always bizarre take” on the Emerald City adventures. The miniseries, set to air in December, stars Zooey Deschanel as DG (aka Dorothy, Miss Gale if you’re nasty), Alan Cumming as Glitch (aka Scarecrow, brain not included), Raoul Trujillo as Raw (aka Cowardly Lion; Raw stands for rawwwr, I guess) and Neal McDonough as Cain (aka Tin Man, though shouldn’t he look more, uh, tinny?).

The remake has a twister throw Midwestern waitress DG into The Outer Zone (get it? O.Z.), a magical realm that is oppressed by dark magic. The land is ruled by an evil sorceress named Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson). From the looks of things, the wicked witch has traded her broom for some tattoos. And the great and wonderful wizard is now Mystic Man (Richard Dreyfuss; no word yet on whether he’ll be behind a curtain).

The teaser trailer (see it here) promises that the fantastical tale will be “reborn for a new generation.” To accomplish this, it looks like they’ve amped up the angst. Glitch was a brilliant inventor who lost half his brain while imprisoned in Azkadellia’s torture chambers. Raw is a half-man, half-wolverine psychic who lost his nerve after Azkadellia stole his gift of second sight. And Tin Man is a vengeful ex-cop who spent years locked in a metal suit, forced to watch a holographic loop of Azkadellia’s soldiers abducting his wife and child. Geez, wasn’t this originally a children’s story?

Now, theoretically, this should be right up my Yellow Brick Road. But messing with a beloved classic is always tricky (uh, remember The Wiz?). I will say that the idea is intriguing and the cast promising. But going dark and depressed isn’t exactly the kind of bold reimagining that sends me over the rainbow. Well, at least they kept Toto.

What's wrong with the Wiz?

I for one, really like the Wiz. Possibly more than the original. I don't think I'll be seeing this one, though. Far too dark and different. And generally, I find that when people try to "boldly reimagine" things, it just means it sucks but if you don't like it they say you don't get it.

Oooh

That looks like it could possibly be rather good. I'm not a big fan of Wizard of Oz, however I love Return to Oz, despite always being freaked out by the Wheelers and the whole removeable head issue.

Sigh...Zooey Deschanel

I have to admit that I'll be tuning in, because I have a "crush" on Zooey Deschanel (and her sister Emily Deschanel, from TV's "Bones").

I've never been a huge Wizard of Oz fan... I only saw the movie a few years back for the first time, and didn't even finish it.  That said, I'll still watch this update, again because Zooey always brings something fresh and interesting to the table and is too adorable to miss (did everyone catch her in ELF?).

P.S. That is Zooey in my avatar picture.

It's "The Wiz" movie that sucked...

not the Broadway musical.  The musical was one of the best.  It was bright and fun and had some great songs.

Motown destroyed it, with really, really bad casting and bad rewriting to fit that cast. and unfortunately, no one's gone back to redo it.  If any film needs to be redone it's "The Wiz".

I'm looking forward to this. I always love to see a classic decontructed and put back to gether again a little differently.  I hope it's good.

Peace, Joy and Love

This looks like it might have potential

The wicked witch certainly looks kinda hot.
But has anyone seen The Muppets Wizard of Oz with Ms Piggy as a biker chick wicked witch and Queen Latifah as Dorthy's aunt soooooooo damn good.
And as with a lot of muppets/Henson stuff incredibly queer friendly.

I'm sad that they're messing with Oz

But I'm going to watch anyways because: Zooey Deschenal+Allen Cummings+Sci Fi Channel = Awesomness.

Alan and Zooey, yay!

I don't get the Sci Fi Channel because I'm in Australia, but if it comes out on DVD here I'm definitely going to take a look. I have a mad crush on Zooey Deschanel (she seems to randomly, unexpectedly turn up in movies a lot, and I always squeal when she does). Plus I adore Alan Cumming. I will watch him in anything, because he's awesome.

Hmmmm.

Dunno; I'll give it a shot because I trust SciFi.

But I'm concerned about the depiction of the Tin Man, and the other traveling companions. One of the key subtleties behind the original Oz was that despite his lack of brains, Scarecrow always figured stuff out. Despite his lack of courage, the Cowardly Lion led the way into the witches castle. Despite his lack of a heart, the Tin Man was the emotional counselor for everyone and Dorothy's rock when she needed support (and a big flirt with Dorothy, too).

In other words, their actions and nobility of character made them the literal manifestations of what they physically lacked.

A Tin Man on a revenge mission seems a bit off to me....

Sci-fi channel tends to do

Sci-fi channel tends to do mini-series well. It's the regular series you have to watch out for, those end up awesome(of the cult-ish variety) or terrible with no inbetween.

Just for the record. Who here doesn't have a crush on Zooey Deschenal?
