News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Tilda Swinton transcends Hollywood

I’ve always thought Tilda Swinton was a fascinating woman, but ever since the Oscars, I’ve upgraded her to amazing. While the fashionistas ripped her makeup-free face and Hefty-bag chic, I though she was one of the most striking women on the red carpet (OK, fine, the trash bag was weird, but she still managed to almost pull it off). That blaze of red hair and those porcelain angles make it nearly impossible not to stop and stare. And have I mentioned the suits?

Tilda graces the cover of Out magazine’s April “Transgender Issue.” While the Oscar-winning actress isn’t trans, she does delightfully blur the boundaries with her style, attitude and roles. Anyone who saw her in 1992’s avant garde epic Orlando knows she can gender-bend with the best of them. Also, sweet fancy Moses, does she ever look good in a suit.

And what’s great about Tilda is that the more I read about her, the more amazing she becomes. Like, what did she want to eat during her Out interview? Mashed potatoes or “anything I can eat with a teaspoon, basically. I’m not really up to a fork.” How delightfully weird. But there’s nothing weird about Tilda’s take on making art.

“I’ve never been comfortable calling myself an actress or an actor. It sounds pretentious to say, but it’s actually me trying not to be pretentious. I just don’t know how to act, particularly. I think of myself more as an artist’s model than anything.”

That self-analysis may be one of the best descriptions of her I’ve ever read. Throughout her career, Tilda has tended to make art, and not necessarily entertainment. Her films are sometimes difficult to watch, sometimes bordering on awful. But she has this way of turning herself into a canvas where the character paints itself with bright, vibrant tones.

While some of the tabloids recently tittered about her unconventional living arrangements, Tilda saw no reason to hide her relationships. She lives with her long-time artist husband, John Byrne, and went to the Oscars and other public events recently with her younger lover and fellow artist Sandro Kopp. How did she explain her relationships? “We ostensibly live in the same house, but I travel the world with another delightful painter.” Now that’s how you defuse gossip.

In an industry that champions set gender roles, the fact that as androgynous an actress as Tilda has been able to work and thrive is pretty amazing in and of itself. She told Out that her inherent outsider status is one of the reasons she fees so connected to the gay community:

“I think there is something very specific about a community of people who have by very virtue of their sexuality had to be self-determining, that early realization, that early decision, all the feelings of loneliness, all the feelings of pride -— all of that is my home. There are things that ... I take from my background with great gratitude — things like a love of nature, the idea of social responsibility, good manners, etc. — but I had to make a departure very, very early, and maybe that’s the real key to why I feel very much at home in the gay community.”

Like I said, amazing.

Stunning...

Ah, Tilda!

Phenomenal, refreshing and unique!  An artist's model, most definitely!  And btw the suits, red hair, eyes, and porcelain look...*swoon*

She's someone Hollywood needs right now

It's refreshing to see a woman who has a promising career in Hollywood who isn't in in make-up all the time or being forced to conform to stereotypes of what  being feminine looks like

YES!

I love her. Absolutely. Unconditionally. Unabashedly. (obviously)....

She does, literally transcend *everything* that Hollywood represents ... but more than that, she transends so much of HUMANITY ... I think Hollywood sometimes tries to hard to be "normal" ... that there's some pressure to make entertainment, or dare i say it, "art" - reflective of "real life" .... which to an extend I understand. But the very nature of most art, I think, involves some form of artiface and unique adaptation toward the suspension of disblief - that Hollywood, in my humble opinion - doesn't utilize NEARLY enough.

But Tilda Swinton .... she is the embodiment, I think to many people, of the suspension of disbelief. And i think that is the sexiest, brashest, most glorious trait in the entire world, and she's only one of 5 living people that I can think of who accomplishes that.

Dorothy - my hat tips off in respect and gratitude for this article.

And yes, she's DAMN fine in a suit. ;)

Female Perversions

Anyone who likes Tilda Swinton and reads this blog might want to check out Female Perversions if you haven't seen it. It's a fantastic, though somewhat disturbing, film. (Swinton has a lesbian lover in the film.)

disturbing yes!

I think one of the small images up there might be from it? In any case, I love/hate this movie.

Tilda the Great!

I absolutely LOVE Tilda Swinton!  And yes she does Indeed look Fine in a suit. On top of being strikingly beautiful and very talented she is F**king smart: I saw her on Charlie Rose shortly before "Young Adam" was released and she was talking about loneliness and said something so though-provoking and insightful I wrote it down [don't ask me where that slip of paper is now...] She basically said that we are all lonely to some degree and if we could simply accept that about ourselves and each other instead of trying to 'fix' it people would generally be better off and the world would be a much better place! I whole-heartedly agree! Female Perversions is quite good - but I've loved her in everything! She's especially fantasic in Constantine!

Freedom is not something you are given, but something you have to take.

tilda is my

"hot hot sex" as the commercial would say. She is so beautiful and wonderful and awesome. I love her the more I read about her. Thanks for highlighting this lovely lady.. I can't wait to read OUT! Plus, I loved her as the angel Gabriel in Constantine. I know the movie is questionable.. but, dude, she rocks that role. No pun intended.

wow that quote, once again

I'm happy she received her dues as an "actress" this year

I've got to find this magazine so I can read the rest of the article

I Agree

I first saw her in Constantine and although she wasn't a lead, she stuck in my mind. I thought she was so awesome. Now, it seems everything i see relating to her just proves this more. ^^

Suit FTW

When I saw Narnia, I couldn't help but love her right away (and she was evil in that movie! Oh well).

Judging from this article, I feel like she's just as great in real life.
And gorgeous. Wow.

Thank You, Ms. Snarker!

I've been an adoring fan of Tilda Swinton for many years, "Orlando" was the film that hooked me. Last year I had the pleasure of attending an "in person" interview with Tilda at the 2007 Edinburgh International Film Festival. She was supremely gracious, funny, self-deprecating, intelligent and quirky... compellingly eccentric rather than "wierd" (as the tabloids tend to describe her). The entire interview is sadly not available but highlights of it are if anyone is interested. Among other things, she talks about her films with the late Derek Jarman (Edward II, Carravagio, etc.), her Hollywood experiences and her androgony: EIFF Interview

Androgeny

Yes! Thank you for this article, Dorothy Snarker!

At a time when lovely actresses are allowing "Hollywood" to dictate their breast sizes/weight/looks, so that their beauty is of the "cookie cutter" variety...it is delightful to see a celebrated actress, like Tilda Swinton, accentuate her sexy, androgenous look and a beauty that is as unique and fascinating as the person within.

She is...lovely!
:-)

I pray that the movie industry will, indeed, start to realize that beauty takes many forms and that they do not need to "define" it for us.

Tilda

I have loved Tilda since 'Orlando.'  The movie itself I thought was merely OK (although it was beautifully shot) but I remember her being outstanding in it.

I've followed her career ever since and have had my heart broken every time I gaze upon her glorious face.  I nearly had a heart attack when I saw her in Constantine-Tilda in that green suit and later on in those white pants with suspenders-IN A TANK TOP!!!! I nearly died and went to heaven.

I bought the issue of Out yesterday and it is a great read, ladies.  A great interview with Tilda as well as an entire issue dedicated to a part of the queer community that perhaps alot of us don't know that much about.  Run-don't walk- out and get it.

I've always thought...

she was a great actress and I agree definately looks hot in a suit. I've never been disappointed by her in anything I've seen. Olando, Young Adam, and Narnia are probably my favorites though.
