Thirteen gets lucky with mixed resultsUm, hi House. Yeah, thing is, I want my 20 seconds back. Yes, those 20 seconds. Yes, I timed them. Those 20 seconds of good stuff. Those 20 seconds you cut from the smoking hot promos compared to what actually aired on American television. The 20 seconds that include the removal of tops, unbuttoning of pants, kissing of stomachs and breathless, carnal uttering of something like “come here.” Don't be coy with me. You know you cut them. They looked like this:
Last night's episode of House, both ironically and un-ironically titled “Lucky Thirteen,” featured the first real physical evidence of Thirteen's (Olivia Wilde) bisexuality as she slept with and then had to treat a female one-night stand. The woman was played by Angela Gots, who many will remember from The L Word as Cammie the “gay for pay” actress whom portrayed Shane/Shaun in the meta headache known as Lez Girls.
When I first saw the promos, I commented that it “may be the single hottest, longest, screen meltingest girl-on-girl action to ever be aired in the primetime broadcast TV 'family hour' of 8 p.m.” And it would have been, had the whole thing aired. What did air, while still hot, was definitely watered down. Which leads to the somewhat rhetorical question: Why preview a longer, hotter clip than what eventually got broadcast? The answer, duh, ratings. Bummer.
The rest of the episode — while interspersed with some nice interaction between Olivia and Angela — was largely a bummer, too. Since her Huntington's diagnosis, Thirteen has learned that she may have even less time than she thought. So instead of trying to stay healthy, she is partying and picking up women at bars. When Foreman confronts her on this her reasoning is simple. Thirteen: I'm having fun, cramming as much life into my life as I can. Now, I have to take issue with the presentation of Thirteen's bisexuality as part of her supposed downward spiral. All of her one-night stands are with women and she admits to not being into “repeat performances.” She looks pale and bleary-eyed throughout and administers IV fluids on herself after a particularly wild night. She even gets fired (temporarily) by House for her hard-partying ways.
Look, we have so few examples of gay women in sexual relationships on TV in the first place, must this one be shown as a symptom of her reckless behavior? Later in the episode, Thirteen does seem to make a genuine connection with Spencer. (Say, is that TV writers' new go-to name now for gay women?) But that connection is mostly born out of the fact that Thirteen thinks that Spencer also has a terminal diagnosis. Once it turns out Spencer isn't dying, Thirteen again admits to feeling alone.
Adding to my disappointment in the episode were earlier spoilers that Thirteen and Foreman might become more than just colleagues. The potential “Forteen” coupling was hinted at broadly throughout the episode as Foreman showed concern in her behavior and she confided in him.
Intentional or not, this sets up the dynamic that Thirteen is “unhealthy” and “unstable” when she is with women and “healthy” and “balanced” when she is with men. And then there is the closing shot of a glassy-eyed Thirteen who is — surprise, surprise — with yet another female conquest. Hey, House, a message that sex with women is bad for your health is totally not what the doctor ordered.
Still, the episode did give me the newest slogan for my burgeoning novelty T-shirt business: “Another life saved by girl-on-girl action.” So, what did you think? Did you like Thirteen and Spencer together? Are you interested in Forteen? And, seriously, where the hell did those 20 seconds go? Submitted by on October 22, 2008 - 10:00am. |

Say what?...oh that's right.
never watched House before, saw this episode... going to continue to not watch it. gotta love that whole "bisexuals are just crazy druggies" attitude...oh well, didn't have much hope from this episode anyway.
no
disappointing, yes, but...
how often do we get to see a lesbian hookup on primetime? despite the stereotyping, i thought house was hilarious, and the hospital bed scenes were really sweet. love olivia wilde, but i agree - i really dont want to see her hook up with foreman. it's not him being a dude, it's the fact that he IS boring, totally devoid of emotion, and there's NO chemistry.

my take: rightmindleftcoast.wordpress.com
i missed the beginning of
i missed the beginning of the episode, so i only ever saw the super-hot previews, which apparently ended up being a good thing. while i don't love how thirteen's flings with women are being portrayed as a result of her downward spiral, i'm not really that bothered by the way she's portrayed otherwise (although the idea of thirteen/foreman is seriously disturbing). there have been references in past episodes to her having had previous relationships with women, so it's not like she's only sleeping with women because she's freaking out, and i do like the fact that she's choosing women over men here, regardless of the reason (partically because i like watching olivia wilde make out with girls =]). the other thing i noticed was when house was psychoanalyzing her after he fired her, he's giving her all these explainations as to why she's turned to meaningless sex with women instead of men, to which she replied "and here i thought i just liked boobs", or something like that, which amused me.
and i loved house's line "another life saved by girl-on-girl action". they should follow that philosophy every week, and have thirteen and cameron make out all the time to save lives =D
i want my 20 seconds back
i want my 20 seconds back too. i told a bunch of people that thirteen was having hot scenes with other women and that they needed to watch house this week AND i also couldn't concentration because everytime someone said "house" or a number i thought of the hottness and was distracted.
i was a little let down cause i filled it with so much anticipation, but i still did like what was there. the part when thirteen got on the hospital bed with spencer was cute in my opinion, there should be more of that.
olivia wilde needs more gay roles; she looks so good when another woman's stuck to her face.
my favorite part though was when house was once again giving her a rough time and her response is "and all this time i thought it was just cause i liked boobs." i laughed so hard at that.
thirteen, when you're feeling lonely, give me a call. i'll cheer you up :)
omg i love olivia so much. she rocks wayyy too much.
shame on Fox for teasing more than showing
I thought this episode was better than the other episodes this season but yes it could have been much better.
where did the rest of it go
yeah where did they go i was watching it and when it cut of after like 10 secs i yelled WHAT THE HELL they tricked me but the episode was still awesome
LOV3 LIV3 LIF3
Bring Spencer Back...
And have a real relationship. Please.
http://renthead.wordpress.com/
where did they go?
Well away. Damn those ratings. Still, we got what almost looked like a girl-on-girl action scene. Almost. We're getting there. And there was almost another one at the end too. More girls, with hair color variations, really, we're getting there.
Little Cuir Jacket
Agreed
with most comments i've read--
1. Hothot scene. I've never watched House in my life until last night.
2. When she finally hits rock bottom the love of a good man will save the day. Then she'll become a mom and get married and live a "descent" life
Did anyone else say "giggity giggity" while watching their interactions :P LOL!
Censors
My guess is that the 20 seconds got lost to the censors, and not that 20 seconds were found for the promo.
At any rate, I'll reserve judgement on the association of the "downward spiral" and women. At this point, I think it is more about promiscuity, than women, although I will admit that others may/will not see it that way.
And House's comments were nothing short of hillarious. Not to mention that he did not judge her being with a woman, only that she was spiraling downward. He would have dogged her just as much had it been a man.

Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security -- B. FranklinOlivia Wilde.....
I think she's such an excellent actress. I mean I admit, when I first saw her as Alex on The O.C. I thought, "Beautiful, but if she's like Mischa Barton and can't act to save her life, this will be boring". I was completely taken back, because she's not only so stirking, but uber talented and such a convincing actress. So anyways, my point, if they have a bisexual character on the tube, then they should do something more then her just throwing her life away and fucking around with everyone. Not that I'm saying it's not fun, but there is so much more then just that. If they take the task on putting a bisexual woman on the T.V., then they should back it up and show how amazing it is to be with a woman. I mean showing sex is so easy, but it would be ideal if they put a postive spin on her and her love life, with a woman, not with Foreman.
I'm completely against the idea of her and Foreman. First of all I find him to be the most irritating character on House. He's boring, one dimensional and he's got no chemistry with thirteen. She's got to be with someone just as perfect as she is, even though she's also flawed. I don't know, it puts me off the show if I have to see those two together.
I agree with the post on this page, "Just say no to Fourteen".
I have to disagree with
I have to disagree with this as a negative portrayal. I thought there were some geniunely sweet moments between 13 and the patient... also, the kissing was much less "chaste" than what you usually see on TV between women.
I felt that they did a good job of pointing out that it wasn't specifically the fact that she was sleeping with women, but rather the fact that she was sleeping around and couldn't connect with anyone that made her behavoir unhealthy. I also thought that the conversation with House about how she could be sleeping with guys was telling ("I thought it was just that I liked boobs." heh.), although maybe not accurate about the dynamics between women... at least they tried.
It would have been nice for 13 to actually date the girl, but people on these shows so rarely date anyone outside of the main cast... mainly because it just isn't interesting. However, Cameron and 13 dating, now that I would enjoy.
There were some..
You're right there were some very sweet moments. When she was laying next to her at the hospital and Spencer said to 13 "I'm glad you're here". They tried, but I just wish they would take it one step further and not be done with it. I mean, who knows maybe it'll play out with her getting with Foreman. Then them breaking up at some point, because every show wants some amount of drama. Then 13 getting with a woman. But they could take that in the direction of her, trying to get over Foreman and just looking for a rebound fuck. Or another downward spiral. We'll see how they handle it, but still no Foreman and 13. That's idiotic.
The hospital bed scene was
The hospital bed scene was probably the best part. The foreman/thirteen relationship will probably happen since foreman is so freakin' boring! maybe I'll just pretend foreman is really cameron...
Some scenes
For those who didn't watch last night ep. I uploaded some scenes and posted here: http://lebiscoito.wordpress.com (and for those who read portuguese you can check the closed caption)
http://lebiscoito.wordpress.com
I am glad...
Aw, hell
I was EXTREMELY dissapointed to miss my 20 seconds. You have no idea how frustrated I got when I saw that they skipped from kiss to next morning.
Foreman and Thirteen? Say it isn't so. Foreman is NOT her type...and by time, I mean not a sexy woman who is up to her caliber is the amazing factor.
But the episode as a whole wasn't very good either.
Fox, you dissallusioned me.
:(
I agree with several on
I agree with several on here - I quite liked the episode, and didn't feel that it portrayed bi women in a negative light. I think it was in character and in line for the show, and I think that the self-destructive behavior discussed on the show has less to do with Thirteen's bisexuality and more to do with her diagnosis and the story arc there. I actually found the episode compelling because of that - I think Olivia Wilde does a great job with the character - and she's a good intellectual match for House, imo.
I confess that I loved House's comments, I was snickering the whole time - especially at the 'another life saved by girl-on-girl action' line.
I thought that the scene where Thirteen stays at the bedside and then gets into bed with the woman was quite sweet, and I actually found the examination scene (where Thirteen was looking for the spider bite) quite erotic. I personally was expecting a lot less from the episode - I thought we would see just the cold open (er, hot open lol), and then not much else between the two women. Again, I wasn't offended by the comments or nature of the episode - And I would label myself bisexual (though I'm only dating women at the moment - call me haha).
I think discerning viewers can see that it's about Thirteen's struggle with her diagnosis, and that her colleagues' concerns about her 'self-destructive behavior' are focused on the 'sex with strangers' bit, not the fact that she's sleeping with female strangers (House's barbs notwithstanding, but that's typical for him, and it's clear - to me at least - that House actually has no problem with Thirteen's sexuality - if he did, he wouldn't be able to joke about it so lightly).
And hey, we got to see Olivia with two ladies, not one - a bonus I didn't expect. Yes, it was short - but sweet - I'll take it.
Anyway, that's my two cents - or, two dollars.
Oh, and I do agree with most that a Foreman/Thirteen pairing would be boring. I like Omar Epps a lot but I don't see the two of the characters together. It certainly would be disappointing if she does get with him and then her life sorts itself right out - now there's a message I could not get behind...
Yes. I totally agree with
thanks
!!
20 sec
*sigh* such a great commercial such a dissapointing 20 seconds but at least they showed something.
twitter.com/rainbow_penguin
I liked it
If you can get past the idea that they are some how suggesting that sleeping with women is unhealthy and sleeping with a man will straighten you out...I liked last night's episode. Definitely disappointing that they cut so much out but really, I'm not surprised, it's American primetime television.
During the search for the spider bite, the sexual tension was so crazy hot, I wanted to burst! But I really liked the kiss they shared when they were cuddling on the hospital bed. It was short but very affectionate and gentle...
Can Olivia Wilde be anymore amazing...? *daydreaming*
I agree, that exam scene
I agree, that exam scene was smokin! Great dialogue. And everything else.
Olivia Wilde is quite convincing as a gay lady.
Putting aside the patient for a moment...
...anyone else's pulse quicken considerably when House alluded to Cuddy giving Thirteen a spanking?
*tumbleweeds*
Just me then, huh?
*crickets*
Um...hey look over there, a diversion! *runs away*
Disgusted.
Nothing is worse then something or someone you love lets you down. At what point do you call that something or someone on why they let you down? Do you just overlook it and maybe defend it.
An episode of House showed bisexuality as the workings of the emotionally damaged. From the song that opened it (listen to the lyrics everybody) to the end, this was a blistering, cruel attack on sex between women. To state that was arbitrary is beyond me. This is what it is and deserves to be condemned as such. It was a slap in the face and not a gentle one. Soon Thirteen will be enlightened and saved by a man and Thirteen's bisexuality will fade (unless they want ratings up with a threesome). So enjoy it while it lasted but this show said what it feels about sex between women last night. I like the program but cannot blind myself to the brutal hateful message it sent out.
i really hated it. like,
i really hated it. like, really. i mean the ONLY thing that saved me was the utter HOTNESS of 13.. because really, who is that hot?!
but seriously house's quote was amazing. and definitely my facebook status for a whole day. *nerd*
"Sometimes when i get homesick i hum the mr softee song"
If enough people complain?
If enough people write in and complain to Fox or the producers and writers of House, maybe they'll drop or write out the storyline?
I have a feeling Thirteen with any woman will pull bigger ratings than her with
Bore-man
Well, she's bisexual, right?
Well, she's bisexual, right? so whether she finds a commitment with Foreman (a guy) or a woman, I really don't think that's a problem. I think it would be really cool for the show's dynamic if she and Foreman became closer.
However, the men=stable, women=rebellion against life dichotomy is totally one that should be addressed. How about this... just make her pick up a guy at a bar, as well as all the ladies. Like just once, it doesn't have to go into any sexy scenes (save that for the ladies please :P) but then it's clear that it's not about her sleeping with women, it's about her being unsafe. What do you think?
Mixed Results? You're kiddin'
I have to personally disagree with the line of this "review".
I've just seen the episode, and it was great.
Yes, Wilde's character's bisexual. Yes, she'll certainly die young because of the Huntington. Yes she's weak and confused and angry about it. And yes, she really entered a self destructive tunnel.
Those up here are four statements. The last two ones are caused by the second (the huntington). The first is just there. She is bisexual, and that was assumed waaaaaaay before she discovered her disease.
Now, the stupid and distructive(well, not really but still not that right) thing is the fact that she picks up strangers to have sex with (plus drugs and a couple of other stupid things) and not that they're female.
That's because of her reaction to the disease. She probably thinks that this way she can feel more alive for the time she still has to live. <--Yeah, that's of course stupid, but I really find nice the way they're trying to treat this issue, with all the psychological implications. This is a way of seeing from the eyes of someone who knows is gonna die. How do you think you would react? Whatever is the answer, Thirteen is reacting this way.
During a short conversation with 13, House assumes that she only gets girls because they're a challenge while men, they're not, of course.
Yes, one can missunderstand this, or maybe the intention was this, but I do not see "Oh yeah, I'm gonna die, that's why I'm sleeping with grls. Otherwise, I'd not do such a thing"
Sorry, it's not this way, and it's just...come on..obvious!
The fact that 13 is bisexual is not in doubt(never was actually, she could have denied it thousands of times, she didn't). So we know that she use to like both guys and girls. And she does that apart from the damn huntington corea and before she knew she had the disease.
Now, what changed after the discovering of the Huntington(apart from the other stupid things), is that Olivia's character is not sleeping with men anymore. She just chose girls. Why? House sure gives us a hint, and it's all about her reaction.
She now has serious problems regarding the creation of a real relationship. She doesn't think she need\want one. she just wants to have fun, and to feel alive. Being a bigger challenge, going for a different girl every night it's just part of this. She dares herself, she has jut fun, she doesn't even wanna know the girl's name!
Of course one can think that the manifestation of her bisexuality was different when she didn't know she had the disease. At the time, she didn't have these issues. The fear, the anger, the hurry andeverything. Now she does, and she's become this slutty drug addict. Yep, this you can call self distruction.
But I still love you, Olivia :P
Oh and I want the 20 seconds back. But I can't really hope to see them when the episode airs in Italy XD
This is the downfall of any
