The ladies shone, surprised and shocked at the Golden Globes

On a night when Kate Winslet took home two shiny new bookends, Tina Fey called out online haters, Sally Hawkins proved that nice girls can finish first and Megan Fox dubbed herself a tranny, the women stole the show from the fellas hands down at the Golden Globes ceremony.

Even though it failed to yield a classic Christine Lahti-in-the-restroom moment, the telecast proved both humorous and heartfelt. So let's hand out some of our own awards for the highlights, lowlights and were-there-any-lights-on-upstairs-when-she-decided-to-wear-that moments from Sunday's show.

Most Excited To Not Be Susan Lucci: Kate Winslet

Kate took home both the best actress (Revolutionary Road) and best supporting actress (The Reader) awards after leaving the show empty handed five times before. By her second win of the night, Kate nearly hyperventilated on stage and got away with blanking on, of all people, Angelina Jolie's name. How she managed to be both flustered and classy is beyond me. Must be a British thing.

Best Use of the Internet: Tina Fey

Not only did Tina Fey tell her internet critics “You can suck,” while picking up her best actress in a comedy trophy, she mentioned real-life internet critics. Turns out BabsonLacrosse, dianefan and Cougar Letter are all actual posters on the Los Angeles Times entertainment forum The Envelope.

Hey, Tina, we love you here at AfterEllen.com. Come read us instead and we promise only to say nice things. Honest.

Best Guestbian: Sally Hawkins

Sure, she won for her irrepressible performance as Poppy in Happy-Go-Lucky, but most of us discovered her first as Sue in Fingersmith. Look who is the pearl now.

Worst Self Image: Megan Fox

In her E! red-carpet interview, Megan called herself a doppelgänger for Alan Alda, said she was “a tranny,” joked (sort of) that she had starved herself for a month to fit into her dress and then lusted after Salma Hayek's breasts. Clearly, the resemblance is stunning.

Most Worthy of Megan Fox's Lust: Salma Hayek's breasts

Perhaps Megan has a point after all. Because those are the most amazing boobs.

Most Surprising: Anna Paquin and Colin Farrell

Anna beat out a veteran field to win best dramatic actress for a TV series for her first year on True Blood. So now she gets to add a Golden Globe to her mantel next to that Oscar — somebody upstairs likes her. Colin was surprising not because he won, per se, but because he a) looked nicely groomed and b) gave a charming speech. I guess rehab really does work.

Best Taskmasters: Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Gervais

The audience got shushed repeatedly for talking during the broadcast but none more memorably than Jennifer’s admonishing “Hello, mama talkin’!” and Ricky’s “How rude are you lot?” This is why they should always serve alcohol at award shows.

Worst Prom Hair, Circa 1985: Drew Barrymore

The '80s called and wants its blue eye shadow back.

Best Upsetting of the Oscar Applecart: Slumdog Millionaire

Take note, Academy, this movie deserves a shot at the little naked golden man. Also, it would mean we'd get to see Freida Pinto on the red carpet again.

Least Happy I've Ever Been to See A Woman's Bra: Renée Zellweger

What? Why? Someone, please, hand Renée a sweater.

So what were your favorite moments? Favorite dresses? Least favorite? Let's dish — though, seriously, who has a blanket she can throw over Renée?

Laura Linney

I loved how composed Laura Linney was in her speech. It almost helped me get over the fact that Mariska Hargitay was not in attendance.

Laura Linney

I love Laura Linney so hard. I liked how didn't even feign surprise that she won. She was like, "Correct, John Adams was stellar and I was spectacular and even on your 60-inch high-def LCD, my skin is flawless, and yes these are my real cheeks."
Babyjune's picture

Laura Linney

She totally deserved it! She deserves an Oscar, actually. People should collect "undeserved Oscars" such as Gwyneth Paltrow's, Julia Robert's, Reese Witherspoon's. Hahahaha. Sorry, couldn't help it =P.

Yay for Linney! Great actress.

Yay for Anna Paquin! True Blood rlz.

Yay for Kate. Another one who deserves OscarS for careers sake.

Loved it!

I LOVED Kate Winslet...so happy for her. I also thought most of the ladies looked gorgeous...and everyone spoke very well. I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire yet but now I really, really want to.

Tina Fey should win an award for the funniest/least boring acceptance speeches. You didn't mention her getting Tracy Morgan to speak for the "30 Rock" award...haha it was hilarious!

And how RIDICULOUSLY gorgeous is Freida Pinto??

She put all the others to shame!

~Renée

Freida Pinto is gorgeous.

Freida Pinto is gorgeous. When I saw the movie the whole time I was like, who is this girl hah. You definetly need to see the movie. Its fantastic!! I really hope it at least gets an Oscar nomination.
Katie 77's picture

Yay Kate!

I knew that Kate Winslet had somehow never won an Oscar, but I didn't realize that she had never won a Golden Globe either!  When she won for Best Supporting Actress, I was shocked at how emotional she was.  We all know how amazing she is, right?  It's about time that the award shows figure it out too.  After all the amazing roles she's done, it's about time she actually got some hardware for her work.

Where was she? I haven't seen her.

Yup, she wasn't there... I

Yup, she wasn't there... I think I was mostly watching it to see her in a beautiful dress (and of course see her win will have been super... at least Tina won !!) !!

Anyway, I want to know why she wasn't there... cos, she wasn't t the PCA either... maybe she's sick... or work !?!

OMG She has a collapsed lung.

I just read on people.com that Mariska had a collapsed lung, but that she is going to be fine and won't miss any time on SVU.  I guess that qualifies as a good excuse to skip the Golden Globes.

Finally Kate Won...and Twice!

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I pumped my fist in the air for Kate's two win's.  It's about f-ing time!  Her speech for Best Actress was moving and I loved that she nearly hyperventalated, made her that much more awesome for me.  She finally received a much deserved award for her acting (as I've said before, she really deserved it for Spotless Mind).

I was pleasently surprised by Colin Farrell's win, I've enjoyed many of his movies.  His speech was very humbling and he was so nervous, I just wanted to give him a hug--not as much as I wanted too for Kate though :).

Overall I thought it was a good show and I'm still giddy over Kate's win.

Amy's picture

Yay for Kate, and what is Renee wearing really? :|

Kate deserves it she's a brilliant actress. Can't wait to see Revolutionary Road (Out in UK Jan 30th) even more so now that Kate won her first Golden Globe for it!

However, Renee Zelwegger? She desperatley needed a best friend that night to tell her she looked ridiculous! Despite that Kate and Tina looked nice :)

Brilliant night!

I was exceedingly pleasantly surprised by what a great night the GGs was... not only did my fave actress (and no. 1 totty in the entire universe) Sally Hawkins win, but there were also some great moments from other Brit babes, such as the wonderful ms. Winslet, and good ol' Emma Thompson. Particularly touching was the interchange between Sally and Emma Thompson when the former was getting overcome with emotion during her acceptance speech, and Emma Thompson mouthed 'are you OK?' to her - awwwwwww! There seemed to be a minimal amount of schmaltz, which was great, and it was also good to see so many Brits / UKers up on the podium; Ricky Gervais was very funny, and it was also amusing to see the scandalized reactions to Sacha Baron Cohen's Madonna / Guy Ritchie gag... obviously a little too shocking for Hollywood's elite!

Biggest idiot of the night should go to P. Diddy, for trying to block out Kate Beckinsdale when they were presenting an award together... so arrogant!

Hooray for super Sally, Kate, Emma Thompson, Tina Fey's great acceptance speech, and the Golden Globes in general! :D

Valance234's picture

I know! Something was wrong

I know! Something was wrong with P. Diddy. Who on earth paired up Kate and Diddy together like that? It was awkward and hard to watch.
moony's picture

Absolutely Charming

That's Sally Hawkins.  And I am so elated about her well-deserved win, I'm posting about it everywhere.  To anyone who's only ever seen her in TTV or Fingersmith, you should check out some of her other work.  She really is an amazing talent.

Winslet was fun to watch, too.  A beauty, and a class act, to be sure.

The other highlight for me was Ricky Gervais - too funny.

hitokage's picture

Yes, Sally is

Yes, Sally is adoarable. I watched the ceremony only for her. Sooooo happy that she won!! I was so excited and couldn't sleep until 5am. She tottally deserved the award and needs to be recognized for her amazing work.

Wow, those up-against-the-wall interviews are so awkward. What dumb questions. I'm so glad Tina Fey isn't feeding the obvious desire by the media to create a feud between her and Sara Palin. I loved "I want her to be happy and do whatever she wants to do." That was a classy answer to an extremely unclassy question.

<3 Kate

Yay for Kate and Tina! But what the F for Megan Fox? I never liked her but wow, apparently she likes herself even less. Creepy.

As for Renee she looks terrible, the worst for me...

Good on the ‘Winslet’.

Dear HFPA (and all the

Dear HFPA (and all the other people responsible for who wins at every award show): Stop making me hate Tina Fey. It's getting a little repetitive and predictable and after all this time it still feels like a lot of "telling" of how AWESOME she is and not much showing. America Ferrera still deserved it more, IMO.

Aside from that, I enjoyed last night's show. My favourite bit was Salma Hayek's presentation of Vicky Cristina Barcelona as one of the nominees for best picture and the little shout-out she gave to Penelope. The OTP lives!

And thanks to stupid instant dubbing, I missed Kate Winslet's second speech, which looks to have been adorable (forgetting Angelina Jolie's name? Hee!) Here's hoping she wins the SAG and (dare we hope?) the Oscar? That would be awesome.

chick1122's picture

Oh wow

Omg what a mess megan fox was. That poor girl. And that stuff about brian austin green having an ego and refusing to attend...how sad.

And yay for sally hawkins! I was so happy to see her win, and accept in such a funny, all over the place way. I haven't seen the movie, but she's an amazing actress so i'm glad she's getting recognition

I was so bummed that I missed her acceptance speech... must have been getting my laundry when she came on. Does anyone know if her speech is posted on the internet anywhere? I am so proud of her! ;-)

sooo happy

man, so i have to be honest, i screamed a little when sally hawkins and kate winslet won their awards. i'm sooooo so happy for sally she's amazing at what she does. and it's about freakin' time kate won some awards; hopefully the same thing will happen at the oscars.

i think those stood out to me most though because each time they were soo shocked that they got the award; i love seeing celebrities in that "omg this is actually happening" face and they were just so charming though they were kind of loosing it :) you're right, it must be a british thing.

and i hope freida pinto looks as stunning at the oscars as she did last night; she's gorgeous and a wonderful actress.

yeah Kate!

I love Kate Winslet!! I am so glad she won double, she deserve it!

Sheesh. I'm getting old.

Be alert.  The world needs more lerts.

Tina Fey

I was happy for Tina. Anyone else think she looked a bit down last night? My sister and I thought she was either a.) over these award shows or b.) feeling sick?

lawgirl24's picture

Sally Hawkins

Is it just me or is Sally Hawkins looking almost anorexic these days? She's lost an awful lot of weight.

I thought she looked beautiful last night but her weight loss was a bit shocking for me.

chick1122's picture

Same here

I was saying the same thing! It's so sad to see. Her bones were showing all over the place :(

How sad

-@^@-'s picture

Me too...

I thought the same thing too. :(  She did break her collarbone last year, though, and had to cancel a lot of the publicity she was scheduled to do for 'Happy-Go-Lucky' due to the pain she was in. I think she must have lost a lot of weight then. :(
Babyjune's picture

Scary Skinny

She was scary skinny. I remember her on both Tipping the Velvet and then on Fingersmith, and she seemed very healthy. On the GGs she couldn't even hold the globe and had to put it on the floor...

Her speech was moving. I loved her interaction with Emma Thompson. That was cute. =)

bigeyedfro's picture

I agree! Her arms were scary

I agree! Her arms were scary skinny and I was like whoa...can she hold the award but I did like her speech. She was so nervous but it was so cute and I just loved what she said when she got done though. But I was so shocked at seeing how small she's gotten. Maybe she'll put some weight back on...atleast back to how she looked in Fingersmith.
Lauwer's picture

Oh My Kate

She was absolutely gorgeous and her two (!!) GG were so deserved..she is amazing and gets hotter the older she gets (but she is only 33..just look at her impressive carreer)Although she did look a lot thinner than I remember her, I hope she didn't loose the weight on purpose cause I liked her the way she was and was always against that Hollywood figure!

Hands down the best moment of the evening, her winning a second time. Loved to her in her acceptance speech that she's loved Leo di Caprio for 7 years now!

jordan-writes's picture

Kate

I love that woman. She deserves it so much! I loved loved loved her acceptance speech. I really hope that she wins an Oscar too! She is just amazingly awesome!

Delighted

Kate Winslet FINALLY winning and it's a DOUBLE!
Waiting for a repetition at the Oscars :)
Tina Fey and "30 Rock", too? Yes, please :)

Totally made my day, wait week, oh, I'm just SO HAPPY :))

However, I'm really surprised by "Slumdog Millionaire" success. I've liked this movie, but not THAT much. For me it was a combination of "City of God" and Bollywood productions (especially in the end, with this really tacky lovestory). Positive, nice, good - yes, but stunning - not so much. "Revolutionary Road" (brilliant), "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Frost/Nixon" (I haven't seen "The Reader", yet) were much more interesting and engaging.

Kate

What can I say - I just love Kate Winslet. She is so awesome. And the wins were so well-deserved. I was really surprised by her reaction. Normally, she always seems so in control, but then I guess I have never seen her win anything. Fantastic. There were definitely some tears dropping here... especially when she told Leo how much she had loved him for 13 years;)

It's a new dawn. It's a new day. It's a new life. And I'm feeling good.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Action Figures

.. loved it.

Tina Fey can do NO wrong. I love love love how she combined humility, humor, and honesty in one speech that I guarantee the crowd was more into than any other speech there was. Amazing is what she is. Tracy's speech was hilarious, he's  such a natural, and I loved Tina's reaction in the background. They all really seemed like they had great chemistry :-)

"Who's the other one?" ... that had to be the best-ouch-but-flustered moment of the night!

Olivia Wilde was there, and so was Megan Fox .. Am I the only one who was wondering if one approached the other? -- smirk ;)

lou1420's picture

Colin was off his head!

Apparently Colin was off his head on coke like, it kindof sounds like he was to be honest, his speech was mad! He should stick to the whiskey like!

Yikes!

What's Megan Fox's problem? That is so unattractive.

Kate

I'm sooooo happy for Kate Winslet. I have waited all these years to see her win. After 5 nominations, finally she got what she deserved and twice!
Ediana's picture

Winslet undeserved.

I'd be happier for Winslet if either of those performances was award worthy.  Sadly that seemed to be premature lifetime achievement declaration.  Before I get shouted down, this is solely based on the flawed performances.  Winslet has been playing up how she always loses and it seems to have effected judgment.  She has been robbed in the past and now it was her time to rob more deserving people.

As for Hawkins's win.  It should win.  It is the performance of the year, even more so than Ledger, Penn or Rourke.  The most difficult performance in recent memory played perfectly.  The homeless man scene is alltime.

HotHandle's picture

"Undeserved"? Don't think so...

Have you actually seen "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road"?  Kate is nothing short of brilliant in both.  She deserves both of her Golden Globes and at least one Oscar on February 22nd.  She is a classy woman and a great actress.

Although Megan Fox has low self image, she was at least brutally honest and had a sense of humour about it. I'll give her that.
