The "Revolutionary Road" trailer shows Kate and Leo's unhappily ever after

What happens when the suburban dissatisfaction of American Beauty meets the stylized cool of Mad Men as played by the world's favorite bow-straddling couple? You get something that ends up looking a whole lot like the trailer for Revolutionary Road.

The film reunites doomed Titanic lovebirds Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time since an inconvenient iceberg marred their happy ending 11 years ago. Oscar-winning American Beauty director Sam Mendes helms this look at the underbelly of the American dream based on the acclaimed 1961 novel by Richard Yates.

Set in the 1950s, the film has Kate and Leo play a young married couple living in the Connecticut suburbs who find themselves boxed in by the weight of societal expectations. Their successful exterior — big home, two kids — belies internal frustrations with their work and the dreams they once had for their futures.

From the trailer, Revolutionary Road seems to have all of the middle-class angst of Mendes' previous work, but none of its dark humor. Still its serious tone is a welcome departure from the fluffy fare of summer and sounds the opening salvo in the race for that shiny naked golden guy named Oscar.

So, what do you think? Is it neat to see Kate and Leo together again minus a big sinking ship? Are you ready to immerse yourself in the film's mid-century middle-class malaise? And, seriously, how could anyone be that unhappy being married to Kate Winslet?

Inconvenient iceberg?

Frankly, I thought the iceberg was the best bit of that Titanic movie...

I agree...

I only wished the iceberg hit the boat earlier and annihilated it so that they could have cut the last 2 hours off the screen time. Or could have focussed on a lesbian relationship Rose had post-boat... now *That* I would have stayed in a cinema for 3 hours for.

Looks promising

It looks like a pretty interesting story and of course it's Kate Winslet, I'll probably end up seeing it. Lately I've been really attracted to anything 1900s-60s so this fits right into the mix.

Sure the trailer doesn't look to have as much angst as American Beauty but it looks angsty enough for Leo and Kate. I can't really see them being tremendously angry with each other; their chemistry looks to have kept up nicely. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

Well...

If it's anything similar to 'Far from Heaven' it will be worth it despite not having the dark humor of 'American Beauty'.

twisted

I think this film is going to have a dark twist that isn't revealed in the trailer just yet.  There is something else going on, I'd be curious to research the book its based on.  If, you know, I didn't have a ton of other more pressing research to be doing.

other characters...

Kathryn Hahn and Kathy Bates are news worthy cast members to me.  I mean Kathy rocks anything she does, and we know she has great chemistry with Leo from Titanic as well.  I've been in love with Kathryn since she first appeared as Lily on Crossing Jordan years ago.  I saw her on Broadway and my love has not waned.  I hope she has a decent role.  I'm tired of her being the sidekick girlfriend in romantic comedies.  I'm guessing which role she plays, but will not share as it could be spoilerish.

Yes, I went and researched the book.  It received high praise from Kurt Vonnegut and Tennesse Williams.  You don't get much better than that in reviews.  Here's hoping the movie does the same.

I blame Kate Winslet in

I blame Kate Winslet in Titanic for making me gay, so I'll watch anything she's in. :D I like Leo too, and Mendes can be a great director. So I'm excited.

Titanic was my favourite film for many years (mostly because Kate looked so damn fine in that big hat, heh) so I'm very happy to see them reunite.

me too! that was one of the first films that started to make me question my sexuality..when i first saw the movie with my girl friends, they went to see the film to cry Leo's death, but then i went alone 2 more times to enjoy Kate Winslet lol

I remember being very anxious about obsessing over Kate instead of Leo. I didn't understand it at all (It was quite simple really, she was smoldering hot and the character was really cool) at the time. But hey, I was eleven so I was kind of clueless.

Set in the 1950s, kate winslet, leonardo dicaprio, dramatic, and about "weight of societal expectations." Yeah, I can't wait to see this!

Did anyone else notice

Did anyone else notice in the trailer there was sex in a car with a hand sliding on the window? And they said this wasn't going to be like Titanic...

sounds boring to me, boring and angst filled

I'm not Kate Winslet

but that movie could be about my life.  Married to a guy, living in the suburbs, 2 kids but miserable.  Hmm, should I go see it so I can salivate over Kate but risk having flashbacks to my own married life?  Or wait and rent the DVD when I can fast-forward to the "good" parts, whatever that may be?

Why send flowers when you can send sex in a basket?

read it

I discovered Richard Yates when I was in grad school, and loved him. He's a realist - doesn't sugarcoat anything, but his character portrayals and stories have great depth and resonance. RR is a brilliant novel, albeit very bleak. I am curious how loyal they will be to the book. The ending is staggering - and controversial, for its time and even today. Kate is my favorite actress, so I am thrilled that she's taken on April Wheeler. I think Leo will be good, too, and Kathy Bates is superbly cast in her role, I can't wait. And let's hope it delivers Kate that long-awaited statue - it's about time!

Oh,how nice!

I want to see this movie! It's a very nice reunion of these 2 in the main roles in this film :)

I remember how excited I was before watching "Titanic".I was 14 or 15 and I was a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio then :P I didn't "discover" then yet that I was gay lol but I liked Kate Winslet as well-ahem,that painting scene when she posed to Jack, ahem :"> No doubt she's a very talented actress and an attractive woman :)

I'm looking forward to watching "Revolutionary road"!

I can't wait.

I love both Kate and Leo though I must confess I was never a big fan of Titanic. But this movie looks really promising. I might pick up the book before...

Btw isn't that Nina Simone singing in the trailer? I think it is "Wild is the wind", isn't it? I just love her music.

It's a new dawn. It's a new day. It's a new life. And I'm feeling good.

If you look very closely , you will NOTICE

Saw the comments above about car scene in  "RR" trailer reminding others of car scene in Titanic

I've read the book ,and the guy in the car scene is NOT Leo's Frank , so it won't be a 'titanic trip down memory lane' with Jack and Rose (put your hands on me )  after all :)
