The new LG phone has a creepy Secret

I love shiny electronic gadgets. Mobile phones. Laptops. MP3 players. Garage door openers. You name it, I love it. I do not, however, love all the advertising for said shiny electronic gadgets. In fact, some of it I hate. In particular, I hate the ad for the new LG Secret.

First of all, they named their phone “Secret” which seems counterintuitive if they want people to actually know about and buy their product. But that’s a mere quibble compared to what’s really wrong with the LG Secret. Take a look at its European viral ad campaign and tell me if you can spot the problem.

Who, exactly, are they marketing this phone to? Stalkers? Potential rapists? The creepy guy who lives upstairs? Now I know why they named it Secret.

The spot is so wrong in so many ways: Voyeurism, unwanted fondling, bad porn music – I could go on and on. But ultimately it’s just another in a long line of infuriatingly sexist ads that turns women into servile sexual objects for the menfolk to ogle and possibly paw. Gosh, and I thought phones were for making calls. Silly me.

And this isn’t the only time LG has touted the stalkerish alternative uses for its phones. Here in the states a new ad for the LG Shine features The Hills stars (wait, is that too strong a word?) Brody Jenner and Lauren Conrad. As a pair of attractive women walk past him, Jenner picks up his mirror-topped phone to catch them on the flip-side, so to speak. Well at least she calls him on his piggish behavior.

Sigh. This is precisely why I’m buying an iPhone next month.

oh man...

looks like I found the birthday gift for the guy next door!

the first vid was so very wrong, and I refuse to acknowledge to Hills one was even made.

OMG

After Ellen..came me!!

That first clip was seriously disturbing. It should be banned. Totally irresponsible advertising. Wrong, just wrong.

BAM FOREVER..

OMG

jeez,

that is SO wrong! I haven't seen it yet though I live in Europe, but yuk.

I don't get why they still do that. It just shows why feminism is still neccesary (said the genderstudies student :P)

Freud is dead

That Euro ad is a Freudian shit pile of crap. I blame the Republicans for the ever increasing blatant global shamelessness that masquerades as relevance. One more reason to remain a cellphone ludite. What was it that Fanny Flagg wrote in Fried Green Tomatoes (the book, not hte movie)? Oh yeah, when the phone's not ringing it's me not calling.
gato's picture

they are both

they are both disturbing..the first is unbelievable.

When I first saw the second add..my first thought was great..guys just need to use their phone to start looking up girls skirts...joy. *rolls eyes* Even her "pig" comment is made out to be a joke..he smirks as if.."so what?"

Sometimes I wonder where all the women in the world are that they let this stuff go.

7OF9's picture

Yeah

Gato, I hear you. I wonder about the same thing everyday.
gato's picture

yeah..women seem to have

yeah..women seem to have lost their balls.. I wonder if Gloria Steinem still has any left in her closet.

Dorothy,

1st, you should have already been in possession of an iPhone, it rocks!!!    :)

2, you're really satisfied with the girl's reaction? Not me. She should have gotten up and leave. No explanation.

Other than that, we're in total agreement :)

iPhone vs Nokia N95

I know the touchscreen and the intuitive interface*) of the iPhone are pretty good, but other than those, I think the Nokia N95 has the better specs. For me it's the first phone in a while that I've kept for longer than a year, because I couldn't find anything better.

I especially like the 5 megapixel cam. And I'm not a stalker. Seriously. I promise.

Also, the first edition of iPhones doesn't have GPS, does it?

*) Personally I like the fact that I have/get to tweak my N95 to my own desired optimum, but some would think me a bit of a gadgetfreaklover....

peculiar_julia's picture

Correct, the first

Correct, the first generation does not have GPS. It also doesn't have a whole bunch of other features that most phones have nowadays. I'm a gadget freak and a major Apple fangirl, but the iPhone was one of the few gadgets I sold because it got annoying (and OLD) very fast.

If you have the N95 then you have the superior gadget, at least until the 3G iPhone comes out ;) And even then, you will probably get the better battery life and system performance. So yeah, congrats on an awesome phone!

3G iPhone

I was thinking about that one. But by the time it comes out, the N96 will be on it's way... ;)

I

can't argue with that :)

Okaaaaay

The 1st one's really creepy... Just sick..........

I actually do have the LG Shine, it's a real eyecatcher, but when I last checked, the half mirror wasn't good enough to look at someone's ass. xD

Nevermore.'s picture

Ew.

I hope to god the Advertisment Standards Agency stops that advert before they show it in the UK.

As if we didn't have enough perverts roaming the streets. -_-

gerryalexis's picture

eww

I havent seen the Uk advert - i think if it was the same as the US one i'd have one hell of a rant at the tv and then a rant at all my friends about the ad on the tv. Then tell them not to get the Stalker phone.... stick to your generic Finnish N phone or your phone names after a Fruit. Who cares if everyone has the same phone. at least were not pervs!

Ayo Technology

Apperantly men r the target consumers and audience in both cases.

I think someone saw the ayo tech vid and got an idea.....an increasingly stupid non advertisement friendly/worthy idea.

the second vid wont stop running and honestly it's just stupid

Ads are meant to make you buy the product not run the other way towards the competition...I would fire the marketing team n remove the first vid at least.

(I-phone here I come)

lol Horrid commercial

The moment after the sprinkler went off I shouted "Stop playing in the water! All your shit is getting wet!". But since it's a commercial I'm afraid she'll never hear my warning. Sadness

drnik46's picture

I'm glad I have a Samsung

I thought the same thing.  Why would you not put on some real clothing and get out of your apartment when the sprinklers start going off?
damnhippie's picture

sprinklers

I've always thought of how I would protect my stuff quickly in case of the sprinklers coming on.  Like, before I run out of the apartment, I think I would use the really thick blankets to throw over the computer and tv, the thinner blanket over the bookshelf, and then run!  That should protect my stuff most likely damaged by water.

It's not paranoia, it's preparation!

Zoh. My. God.

Thanks for pointing this out to people. I too was disturbed when I first saw this ad on Feministing.com

It's these kind of ads that are giving the okay to men that it's totally fine to go around stalking. It's bad enough that stalking is portrayed as totally fine in movies and TVs, and now ads? Gah! And people tell me that we don't live in a sexist - especially misogynistic - society.

Ah, feministing.com-- that's where I saw it first too. Best feminist website EVAH!

Stalker Phone

What if LG received a few thousand e-mails complaining that they were advertising a Stalker Phone? D'ya suppose that ad would get yanked in a hurry? I say lets give it a try...

Pencil or pistol? I just can't decide.

gato's picture

Sometimes it only take one

Sometimes it only take one well placed media email and poof bad campaign is gone.
SouthLily's picture

ohh my..

what a ad it even cant stimulate my feelings to buy this new phone make me feels like if i buy this new i would be a stalker or what!!

csaurin's picture

That first video made me

That first video made me laugh out loud with it's ridiculousness. It's terrible!
Both of those ads should be banned. Recently, an ad with two men briefly kissing got banned here, yet they show crap like that on TV?

Lezliemac's picture

I suggest an LG lezzie boycott !

Really gross. Plus isn't the guy/stalker in the 1st vid too young to be smoking?...His mom should do something about that nasty habit.

I-phone, sure, geeky and cool, but it still doesn't compare to a REAL phone. Unless you have barbie fingers, you will not enjoy texting on your new gadget - just so you know..

damnhippie's picture

Ewww

for the first ad:  ew ew ew ew ew!  really nothing else to say.  Except, was she happy she was being stalked at the end?  I really don't know a woman, straight or gay, who would respond to a stalker with, "oh wow, you think I'm hot?  that's awesome you've been a peeping tom!  let me put on a show for you!"

for the second ad:  eh.  He's just checking out some attractive women.  Is it rude that he's doing that with his girlfriend sitting across from him?  sure.  But don't we all look at other women/men when we are with our significant others?  I mean, we notice people we think are physically attractive.  That's just human nature.  It's not like he was asking those women for their number or even talking to them.  So, kinda piggish, but not nearly the creepy level of stalker as the first one.
