The Emmy Awards get good – no reallyWait, what’s this? An award show that is actually fun? And award show that makes me laugh? An award show that doesn’t put me into a deep and catatonic sleep? Clearly, I’m in some sort of alternate universe. But no, instead it was the 61st annual Emmy Awards telecast last night.
The show honoring the best and brightest in television handed out lots of pointy-winged statuettes to deserving people. And from start to finish (OK, there was a lull there during the reality/miniseries segments) it made for pretty damn good TV. A look at some of the night’s highlights. Best Conspiracy: The supporting actress in a comedy nominees At Amy Poehler's urging, the actresses all wore silly eyewear as their nominations were called out. All, that is, except for Vanessa Williams who gave a very Wilhelmina Slater scowl instead. Best Reason to Wish You Were a Gay Man: Neil Patrick Harris The first-time Emmy host was funny, handsome, talented, charming and funny some more. He and Ellen DeGeneres should just be crowned King and Queen of The Gays and we’d all happily serve at their feet. p.s. I loved Duckie in Pretty in Pink and all, but Jon Cryer totally robbed NPH. Best Lilliputian Winner: Kristin Chenoweth The pint-sized Pushing Daisies star’s win for best supporting actress in a comedy was bittersweet. Bitter because ABC canceled the show. Sweet because she could not be more adorable, nor could her assertion in her speech that: “I'm unemployed now, so I'd like to be on Mad Men. I also like The Office and 24.” Someone hire her, now. p.p.s. She is seriously tiny, quite possibly a Smurf. Best Use of Facial Hair: Sarah Silverman When her name was called out as a nominee for best actress in a comedy, Sarah got all Magnum P.I. on the situation to hilarious effect. Best Endorsement for Multiple Personality Disorder: Toni Collette Toni’s surprise win over Tina Fey in the best actress in a comedy series made me grumble a bit. (In my book you just give every award to Tina and call it a day). But you can’t fault Toni’s talent. Best Way to Start Gossip, Girls: Blake Lively and Leighton Meester The Gossip Girl co-stars held hands as they came out to present. Just call it the hand holding that launched a thousand fanfics. Best Unintentional Promotion of Citrus: Anna Torv When she walked out on stage to present I had a sudden, unquenchable urge to eat a tangerine — possibly two. Best Reference to a Three-Way: Dearbhla Walsh After winning the best directing for a miniseries trophy for the PBS/BBC adaptation of Little Dorrit, Dearbhla thanked her partner saying “looks like there will be three of us in the bed tonight.” And, if I’m not mistaken, the person the camera panned to as her partner was another woman. Best Atonement for Making Me Sit Through House of Sand and Fog: Shohreh Aghdashloo That dress has convinced me to finally forgive Shohreh, who won best actress in a miniseries for House of Saddam, for making me watch the most depressing movie ever. Best the Revolution Will Be Televised Moment: Dr. Horrible hijacks the broadcast Dr. Horrible (of the famed Sing-Along Blog) briefly took over the telecast to extol the virtues of the Internet complete with a buffering gag, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day cameos. Best Fake President: Cherry Jones The out actress and 24 star is already a multiple Tony winner. Now thanks to her best supporting actress in a drama win she can add Emmy winner to her resume as well. She appeared to leave out partner Sarah Paulson in her acceptance speech. But we hope that’s just an oversight. UPDATE: Sarah is currently performing in an off-broadway play, but she tweeted out a message of support to Cherry before the show: "CHERRY JONES AND JESSICA LANGE FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A TV DRAMA AND BEST ACTRESS IN A TV MOVIE..fingers crossed. I LOVE YOU BOTH." (Thanks to Kelly for the tip!) Best Excuse to Start Walking Your Dog Around Central Park: Glenn Close Glenn won her second consecutive best actress in a drama Emmy for Damages. The frequent dog walker was humble and gracious to her fellow nominees in her speech. Best Co-Opting of Rachel Maddow’s Eyewear: Dana Delany The Desperate Housewives star wore spectacles to present. They were super cute, but does no one in Hollywood invest in contacts? Best Reason to No Longer Be Sick of Those Mac Commercials: John Hodgman The Daily Show contributor served as the evening’s color commentator and came up with delightfully wry things to say for each winner. Best Jay Leno Burn: Tina Fey Tina’s series 30 Rock took home its third consecutive win for best comedy and in doing so, she gave a sly dig to her home network, too. “Thank you for keeping us on the air, even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show.” Like I said, hand every award to Tina and call it a day. So, what did you think of the telecast? Favorite winners? Favorite losers? And how about those dresses? Discuss. Submitted by on September 21, 2009 - 10:00am. |

Cherry Jones
Ditto
Yep, I thought that was a bit strange myself...hmmm.
i hate to say it
The Wonderful Cherry Jones
At the risk of sounding completely creepy
Is it that one tiny little red string that's holding Blake Lively's skirt together from flashing us? And god, she has beautiful legs.
Okay, creepy moment over. And HOW cute is Tina Fey! Even in her fancy dress getups, you still want to tuck her in your pocket and take her to a bar with you and drink a beer or two and discuss politics and sarah palin and children.
.
I totally agree with the Tina Fey thing. She is so pocket-tuckable! :D
same risk...
Yes, and that totally adorable discussion with Tina Fey would invariably lead to the uncontrollable urge to briefly put your hand on her knee resulting in a few moments of awkwardness that she would quickly counter with something completely hilarious, thereby diffusing the previous uncomfortable faux pas.
But, I mean, I don't think about things like that or anything...
G'wan the Irish!
Since the shot of the woman in the audience after Dearbhla Walsh's speech was of former nun, runner up in the first season of Big Brother UK, television presenter, and out and proud lesbian, Anna Nolan, one would assume she was the partner to whom Dearbhla was referring!!
Congratulations to Dearbhla, and to Cherry Jones, and to Neil Patrick Harris(!!), representing the LGBT community in fine, winning form!
So glad I stayed up until 4am to watch the live show. Gotta love time differences.
Yep, that was Dearbhla's
Mom, Dad, and Sarah
Towards the beginning of Cherry Jones' speech she said "Thank you mom, dad, and Sarah." It was quick, but I'm pretty sure she was referencing her partner there.
I thought it was a great show and was very happy to see two gay lady winners!
Just re-watched it. She said
Susan is her sister
I always watch with agony, but...
This years Emmys were fun and actually very entertaining, I was about to scream when NPH started singing but then it turn to all sorts of funny. Pobably the Emmy people are kicking their own asses for not giving the award to Neil Patick Harris, he deserved to win.

Sounds like it was a good
Sounds like it was a good Emmy party. But dude, was I the only one going, WTF is going on with Leighton Meester's face in that pic?! Was that a bad angle or what! Yikes. And come on, she's the pretty, it's hard to mess up perfection. But dang.
I'm a bit sad that Tina Fey got robbed but at least 30 Rock won best comedy.
Olivia
Didn't you see Olivia Wilde's dress???? That was by far the best of the night for me (since I wanted Hugh Laurie & House to win)!!! I think she looked AMAZING! I was drooling all over the place.
great show
Cherry Jones and Sarah Paulson
Sarah Paulson is starring off-Broadway right now
Sarah Paulson
NPH
cherry jones/sarah paulson
i also noticed that sarah was absent from the awards and wasn't mentioned in jones's speech. i thought of two things that might've happened: one, fox pressured jones to omitting sarah or two, they broke up. personally, i think it's the second option that more realistic - as muc as fox is homophobic, jones is out and proud so i think she wouldn't give in to trying to push her back to the closet. also, i noticed that she thanked a women name susan, and then the camera cut to an unidentified woman. so perhaps that's her new partner. so i suspect that they broke up.
in any case, one way or the other, lit wasn't the best thing for our visibility last night.
btw, i saw that the neglect of paulson was also mentioned in some staright publications, so perhaps we'll know later what's the dea.
Chenoweth winning was
Chenoweth winning was awesome, I miss Pushing Daisies a lot.
But Sigourney Weaver was once again snubbed, as was Prayers for Bobby in general. I liked how she responded when the name was announced, she just knodded, clapped and smiled. She wasn't pissed, she wasn't faked, she just looked as if she was thinking "yup yet again they missed the real talent".
Blake Lively.
It takes a LOT to make me forget about Olivia Wilde, but that picture of Blake Lively did just that. Wow. Could she be any more gorgeous?
:)
I agree. Lot's of good
I wish that I watched
I wish that I watched football instead. Although I love the man Neil Patrick Harris was a terrible host. I thought that the glasses joke was um.. dumb although Sarah Silverman did sport one mean looken stache! Leighton Meester looked like crap in that dress. Blake Lively looked beautiful in her dress! I was so happy for Kristin Chenoweth! Only good part really in the whole night.
-I speak in random thoughts
Cheno!
Not gonna lie, I cried a little when Kristin Chenoweth won. Could she be any more adorable? Her speech was so cute, and I'm so so glad Pushing Daisies was recognized. Suck on that, ABC!
And yay for 30 Rock winning for the 3rd time IN A ROW! I don't care if it's predictable, 30 Rock deserves every award it can get.
Also, NPH is amazing.
The other guy in Dr. Horrible sing along blog/Cherry/NPH/Blake
The other guy in the Dr. Horrible sing along blog is Simon Helberg. He was a regular on STUDIO 60 & THE SUNSET STRIP and is currently a regular on THE BIG BANG THEORY.
Regarding Cherry Jones, after I made a big deal to catch my girlfriend up on Cherry Jones and Sarah Paulson, she gets up and kisses a boy and neglects to mention her partner. Guess we'll see later if there's something up with that. That's why I love AfterEllen, because I know you guys will figure it out by the time I get home from work and I can give my honey the update over dinner. Thanks for making me look good.
I thought NPH did a great job. I think it is getting harder and harder to host these things as we get more and more cynical as a society.
And I knew Blake Lively was something special since the SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS....she just has that wow thing going. And she's wearing a braid and still wow. That takes skills and good genes.
DOROTHY
Dorothy imma let you finish, but the MTV VIDEO AWARDS HAD ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF ALL TIME.
OF ALL TIME.
:)
Nice.
who wants an emmy when you can have this
wondering no one had posted about this yet. i mean, c'mon!
Olivia v. Padma: The Dress Off
You can see more of Olivia's dress, and Padma's dress, in my post here.
p.s. Hmmm, now that I think about it, "Dress Off" sounds naughty. Bonus!

Sarah Paulson and Cherry Jones
Sarah Paulson twittered this before the Emmys, so if they did break up it must have been on good terms:
"CHERRY JONES AND JESSICA LANGE FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A TV DRAMA AND BEST ACTRESS IN A TV MOVIE..fingers crossed. I LOVE YOU BOTH."
Oh, Amy Poehler with a eyepatch.
If I wasn't committed to Dory I'd change my avatar right here and now.
Bahaha!
sarah silverman was the funniest moment of the night!
i agree man. i loved how she kept that same priceless expression and faked being mad afterwards XD also loved the eyeglass gag by amy :D and of course, dr. horrible's cameo ^_^ lastly, go 30 rock!!!! tina fey owns my heart :DDDD
oh my god!
like that whole night i was in totally extacy! the Emmys were a-ma-zing!!!!! i loved every minute of it. i'm glad toni collette won over Tina Fey because toni really deserved it, i mean i love tina but she's won enough already and i'm glad the acadamy chose someone else.
i really wanted holly hunter to win best actress in a drama series because she worked really hard this season and saving grace is an awesome show! but i'm also glad that glenn close won because i love her too and Damages is also an awesome show!!
neil patrick harris was such a great host and the opening song was hilarious!!!
i was toatlly wondering why Cherry Jones left out Sarah Paulson in her acceptance speech!! i was all WTF??
and when Dearbhla Walsh came up to accept her award, i was all yay, she won and she's gay :) gut really the dress?? no boob support at all, it was really bad.
chandra wilson and kate walsh were hilarious! i love dana delany (can't wait for desperate housewives :D) mad men, best show on television. sigourny weaver, awesome. it was just all amazing!!!

Wow you wrote exactly my
Wow you wrote exactly my thoughts on the Emmys last night. I literally freaked out when Dr. Horrible came on! I love Felicia and Nathan! And, just saying, the only reason I even watched the Emmys was for NPH <3
Don't argue with my superior wisdom, okay? -Dana Fairbanks <3
Sandra Oh...
I really wanted her to win for Best Supporting Actress. Not to mention, she look pretty fantastic.
אני קורא, אז אני פשוט צריך לשמוע אותך
yes!
i second that.
did anyone else see drew barrymore sitting next to justin long? i guess her and ellen page arent together afterall :(
Torv's dress
When Anna Torv walked out with that dress.....no one was looking at Kiefer Sutherland. Couldn't help but stare. Thank you Marc Bouwer!
Different taste of humor
... apparently, because in my household, we found hardly anything funny, and the blond hosting boy - who looks like the American young cousin of Gordon Ramsey - the least. Although, he was at a par with that guy from the horrible Mac ads. And, seriously, it's funny to beat people up? (-> little gay cartoon guy with his dog)
Well, fortunately, there were lots of lovely ladies to help over the lame jokes and boredom. And *two* lesbian winners, yeah! And one with an equally lovely partner - and, none of them looked remotely like the stereotypical lesbian. Double-yeah!
Here's a link to an interview with Dearbhla Walsh, her partner Anna Nolan also talks: http://dynamic.rte.ie/quickaxs/209-rte-tts-thetubridyshow-2009-09-21.smi... (Note: It's past the news segment in the beginning.)
They are so cute in their humbleness!
"At that point, you could have all gotten naked, gotten in your pool and had four bottles of champagne in your house." ~~ Stephanie March
Thanks for the link :)
Thanks for the link!
Wonderful interview, great find. Thanks so much for posting the link! I love how they say Heche-B-O!

Loved
Kristin Chenoweth's speech, even though I was not happy that Vanessa Williams still hasn't won for her role on Ugly Betty. Very happy that Shohreh Aghashloo won b/c I loved her in that mini-series House of Saddam she played his wife very well.
"Come On Then Get These Good Done Debbies"
The Emmy's!
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS- omg he made the entire thing amazing.
Kristin Chenoweth is just absolutely adorable...omg
I was surprised at some of the Academy's choices but nonetheless it was highly entertaining.
Jimmy Fallon! omg so hilarious.

Sheetal Sheth @ the Emmys
Anyone else see Sheetal sitting with Jeff Probst?
