Supergirl gets some super shorts, finallyLook! Up in the sky! It’s a bird; it’s a plane! It’s — well, um, err — it’s definitely not Supergirl’s underwear. That’s right, the super gal is no longer going to show you her whale tail. Can I get an amen?
In June, DC Comics editor Matt Idelson made a simple, yet super declaration: “I never want to see Supergirl's panties again.”
And with that, Supergirl started wearing discrete red biker shorts under her skirt. The change in costume is the latest in a long and often inauspicious array of fashion choices for our superheroine.
While Superman has always worn the famous turquoise onesie and red underoos, Supergirl has largely flown around in a skirt. This of course poses an elemental problem: Dude, who flies in a skirt? And over the years, that skirt has gotten shorter and shorter, as has her top.
Never mind Kryptonite — Supergirl’s real weakness is apparently an ill-timed gust of wind. For a thorough and hilariously look at Supergirl’s fashion changes, check out the gallery at girl-wonder.org. Before the anti-panty dictate, Supergirl’s outfits were questionable at best. Seriously, who fights crime in a mini-skirt and belly top? She is Supergirl, not Superhoochie. Which is another reason this move to additional fabric is a positive one both for the Maid of Might and comics readers. No teenage super heroine should look like a contestant on Rock of Love.
Current Supergirl artist Jamal Igle said the un-super skankificication of Supergirl will hopefully appeal to more of her female fans, instead of just her more prurient-minded fanboys.
As he told Newsarama: The entire costume — if you look at what we’ve done, the costume has evolved in little bits and pieces … It covers a little bit more, and is a little more demure in some respects, but it’s not changed so much that you wouldn’t recognize it. It’s just draw in a way that parents can give the comic to young girls and not feel embarrassed by doing so, because she looks like a hoochie. In the end, it makes her look a little more respectable and honestly, it just makes sense. Like I was saying, can I get an amen? Submitted by on July 9, 2009 - 5:00pm. |

Thank you, comic
Thank you, comic gods!
This has always been one of my biggest issues with mainstream comics. The girls just being there for eye candy. Take away the T&A, and there was nothing left. Now that it's getting more covered up, maybe they can focus on more important things... like plot.
Yay
She doesn't look like she's out to wow those baddies in her skimpy outfit any longer! Instead, she's using her skills to do that, boo yah! Goooooo Supergirl!
I think I've read this
Well then........
What is this weird
What is this weird commotion you call comics over there in the US? ;)
This is weird on two levels - first, why is the supergirl persona an anorectic, blond, white stickfigure model who has to fight crime naked in a skimpy vagina frock ...second, on a slightly different matter, why is looking at a naked girl sooo horribly bad for young girls? What, the girls will turn gay or corroded?
I say the time has come for GIRLS and WOMEN themselves actually drawing their own heroines! Depicting how girls and women really look like. And even if some of the heroines still would look like Superboob Playmates, there would also be actual storielines to go with all the boob! That's what I think!

About time!
Seriously, Supergirl has been around for a long while and NOW they decide that the miniskirt wasn't a good idea?
Ah, well, I'm glad they are doing something about it now.
While I am all for the aesthetics, Women superheroes' costumes should be practical too! Do you have any idea how difficult (and maybe even painful) it is to be fighting in stilletos and no bra?

I have it!
If people are offended by being able to see her undies, then she shouldn't wear any. There. Problem solved.

Maybe I'm sleazy...
... but I want to see her panties! ;-P
Seriously, though, I think that this is taking the whole 'humourless lesbian' stereotype to the extreme (no offence to the author- very well-written article).
All superheros tend to dress skimpily- even if the men don't flash much flesh, their tights still don't leave much to the imagination. This article assumes that only straight men derive enjoyment from seeing skimpily dressed ladies... What about all of us red-blooded lesbians?
I for one will be sad to see the panties go... and I think that the shorts look a little silly under the skirt. Maybe they should get rid of the skirt completely to make the outfit make more sense...
Hip To The Beat, Mommie-O!
I always thought she did
I always thought she did have shorts of underneith. Her costume is based off of a cheerleading outfit after all.
To be fair though, in the tv series smallville, supergirl wore shorts, not a skirt:
Eh, we've applauded worse.
Um, for a lot of years she wore more than what Xena wore (and I don't remember anyone complaining about Renee O'Connor beating up bad guys in a tube top and tight skirt, and Supergirl's stomach is literally invulnerable to harm).
Now we can see what's under her skirt, when we didn't really before. So it's okay if we're looking at Supergirl's underwear as long as they're shorts?
Plus, come on. Power Girl. Geez. And most of the women fo Marvel. Supergirl's actually not bady drawn in comparison (or badly dressed - I didn't like the stomach-baring, her outfits aren't that insane).
As for the skinny, I guess. She's not as skinny in the comics themselves as she is in some of those almost anime-like covers. I think she's actually one of the better drawn females in comics (considering she's supposed to be an alien teenager and all).
they should just shade the area under her skirt or something...
she should just lose the shorts or the skirt, one of them, both together looks like something my gran would have dressed me in when i was 5.
i dont know about parents, but i honestly dont mind skimpy superhereos wear. both genders do it anyways, if it didnt show flesh, it would be skimpy or skin-tight!
theres no way around it really.
