Summer Glau is welcomed to the "Dollhouse"

I’m just going to come right out and say it: Joss Whedon is a total babe magnet. This is scientific fact further proven by the news that Summer Glau is joining Dollhouse as a recurring character in the upcoming second season.

So, for those counting at home, that means welcoming Summer to the Dollhouse with Eliza Dushku, Dichen Lachman, Miracle Laurie, Olivia Williams and Amy Acker.

See what I was saying about babe magnet?

After Summer’s previous series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was canceled in May, Joss told Entertainment Weekly he would love to find a way to bring her onto the series. And now it seems he has: Summer will play Bennett, a Dollhouse employee who shares a past with Eliza’s Echo.

Might I suggest a shared passion for firearms as well? Because, damn, they sure look good carrying them. And wearing tank tops. Oh, and boots. What? It’s not greedy if it’s true.

Additional guest stars appearing throughout the show’s sophomore season will be Eliza’s fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel alum Alexis Denisof, Battlestar Galactica veterans Jamie Bamber and Michael Hogan and Dexter actor Keith Carradine.

Alexis will play a U.S. senator leading a witch hunt to track down the underground organization. Jamie will play a mysterious, charismatic businessman who is Echo’s new husband in the season premiere. Michael portrays a man who seeks the Dollhouse’s help to stop a family member’s psychotic killing spree. And Keith portrays a nemesis of Adelle DeWitt. Amy and Miracle will be back next season, too, respectively in recurring roles as Dr. Claire Saunders/Whiskey and Madeline/November.

Joss has been famously loyal to his actors, and it seems Dollhouse is no different. Besides building it around former Buffy and Angel star Eliza, he has brought on Amy (Angel), Summer (Firefly, Serenity), Alexis (Angel), Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Serenity) and Felicia Day (Buffy, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). Since Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan are probably too busy, might I also suggest Emma Caulfield, Charisma Carpenter and Amber Benson as potential guest stars?

So, what do you think of Summer’s addition? And who else would you love see welcomed to the Dollhouse when its second season premieres Sept. 25?

SUMMER!

I love Eliza don't get me wrong but I bet Summer was Josh's first choice to play the main character, but she was doing another show... Too bad, I can see both in that role easily, but I hope they give Summer a huge part -- and or make the two main characters make out several times... HAHA

Actually Dollhouse is an idea that Joss got while having lunch with Eliza, talking about what kind of show she should do and stuff since she had some kinda deal with FOX.

But I love them both, and am glad that Summer will be on for at least two ep's. :D

Summer wasn't his first

Summer wasn't his first choice :)

He came up with the idea jointly with Eliza, as a way to showcase her range. She convinced him to work for Fox again, so the project is very much joint. Eliza is also producer of the show :p

Can't wait to see Summer in the show though too.

Why is it so great to keep re-using actors?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Summer is a bad choice or anything, but I actually dislike it when directors keep re-using people. It's like they can't be bothered to cast new people they don't know.  To be fair, this is also usually because they are writing, say, the same movies over and over with the same stories (like that guy from Knocked Up that seems to be playing the same role in like, 5 other movies from the same director). Joss obviously isn't doing that. But what about all the other actors out there? Are we really sure one of them wasn't really the best for the role, but Summer got the job because she was the best for the Firefly role and now she's jumped the line?

Plus, I can't be the only one who gets stuck on one actor - I still watch Alyson Hannigan in How I Met Your Mother and refer to her as Willow. And it gets exponentially harder when you have more people from the same show. Who are we really kidding - if Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson guest-starred, would we be seeing their characters, or Willow and Tara??

tnhand1022's picture

I see your point, but...

If Alyson Hannigan is still Willow to you on a completely different show, different genre, different director, then what does it matter if Joss re-uses an actor or someone else does?  Those character associations will always be there for some people no matter what.

I think Joss creates unique roles that pull exemplary performances out of actors.  Ten years later, I think Dushku's work as Faith was her best.  So while I see your point, I also can't wait to see what Joss has in store for this group of talented actors whom I've grown to love.

Wooohooo!!!

that just made my day! Awesome...

Could that stated lesbian action be between the two of them please? I could die happy if that happened.

 Eillac's picture

Best news I've heard all day :)

HAve I just died? Because I'm certainly in heaven. I'm totally in love with Summer. And Alexis is a really great actor, I loved him in Buffy/Angel. Eliza, Amy, Olivia, and now Summer? How much can one girl handle...

Summer is my season

I'm happy enough to see Summer Glau since TSCC got axed, but to also watch her star alongside Eliza Dushku and Amy Acker?! It's better than chocolate and I can't wait!!

My...

Prayers have been answered. I was so bummed when Terminator was cancelled, but now Summer Glau being back on television so soon, and on Dollhouse nonetheless. Two of my favorite Ladies together on one show, so priceless.

Joss Whedon, you's a sly man.

allgood2's picture

Summer started on Angel not Firefly

Don't forget, Summer Glau first became part of Joss' crew in Angel. She played the ballerina in the episode where the Russian dance troupe comes to town; and Angel realizes its the exact same performance or something like that.

Personally, I like how Joss re-uses his actors and such. I think not only is he always on the look out for new talent, but that he's also interested in making sure that others see their talent as well. Just look at Amy Acker's Fred. Joss killed of Fred to bring us Ilyria for a number of plot reasons, but also because he recognized this great talent, and was afraid that people would always see Amy Acker as Fred and not recognize her range as an actor.

He turned her in to a bad ass. A roll so different from Fred that it was easy to forget that we continued to mourn Fred even while the actress who played her remained on the show.

I think he pushes for and celebrates with the actors and crew who he recognizes as having potential. I think its great that Eliza felt she could approach Joss and say, I want you to write a show for me. Or that Amy Acker rocked Alias (literally, rocket launcher scene) because Joss turned her from Fred to Ilyria. Or that he keeps in touch and even does musical gatherings with Amber Benson and others actors.

I'm not certain its what he's shooting for, but he reminds me of a collective. It's Whedon's House. The crew members who want to become an extended family. It's like the old studios system before million dollar contracts. And it's not just Joss. But Tom Lenk helps Amber Benson, Benson Lenk, etc., etc. Not all actors, but a number want the opportunity to join Whedon's House. Look at Neil Patrick Harris, Miracle Laurie, or Olivia Williams.

I admit to following a staple of actors I meet via Whedon, including Eliza, Amy, Nathan, Hannigan, David, Summer, Seth, Felicia, Tom, Amber, etc.  Those not on regular shows are still doing awesome things (most, anyway).

Rusty's picture

Heck yes to the House of Whedon

I follow the actors, but I also follow certain writers introduced by Joss: Jane Espenson, David Fury, and Drew Goddard for example

Talk about Six Degrees of Separation

Most of the shows I follow have a Whedonverse writer in their stable.  Sometimes I'll hear a Buffyism on a random show and find that David Fury or Drew Z. Greenburg has written it.  I keep an ear out for new shows penned by any of these writers - particularly excited for Jane Espenson writing Caprica and Steven S. DeKnight writing and producing Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

I absolutely

love the fact that Summer will have a recurring role in Dollhouse next season. I am really curious to see where Joss takes next season.

As for the fact that Joss re-uses his actors/actress, I love that. To me, it shows he cares for the wellbeing of his actors.

I love this show!

& Joss Whedon! So many hot women- Dichen Lachman, Summer Glau, Eliza Dushku, and Amy Ackers all on my tv-at once? Yes please! (On a sidenote why do they all have weird names?)

The whole reusing actors thing really doesn't phase me or people who haven't seen them in any of Whedon's other ceations. He's loyal to his actors and keeps them employed- that's a great thing to do!

I'm glad no one can see me right now, because I'm geeking out like I've never geeked out before. I'm sitting here, wearing my Jayne hat, and I see 'Summer Glau is welcomed to the "Dolhouse". And I literally flung my arms in the air and yelled, "YES!!!" I cannot WAIT for season 2! I would LOVE to see Amber Benson make it on the show! Even for just one episode! And, if I might add, Glau and Dushku look hooottt in those pics.

Dollhouse, meet your new HBIC

Let me start by saying how DELIGHTED/EXCITED I was when I saw Summer at the top of afterellen's homepage. That's a first, right? It's an amazing feeling when two of your fav things combined, like vanilla ice cream & oreos. MMMmmmm....

Now, about Summer joining Dollhouse. I'm pretty sure when I first heard the news I made a noise that was part squee/orgasm/shriek. Suffice to say, be glad that I was alone at the time; someone might mistake me for a hyena. I'm so overjoyed that there's no way I can express myself properly with words, so I'll leave it at that.

She's the freaking GODDESS, so no doubt at all she'll be freaking amazing in this. I just hope she'll stay :D

Mark Sheppard!

You missed out Mark Sheppard! He was Badger in Firefly. (And Romo Lampkin in Battlestar Galactica.) He plays Tanaka in Dollhouse

I'm waiting for Jonathan M. Woodward to turn up, seeing as he was in Buffy, Angel and Firefly. And I would love to see Clare Kramer. It would be quite nice to see James Marsters again too. Oh, and any of the Troika.

And Christina Hendricks? Please?

Miracle Laurie

As excited as I am to see Summer joining the cast (Thank you, Joss!) I'm even more intrigued to find out how they'll be using Miracle Laurie (Mellie/November/Madeline) in the upcoming season, since they seemed to have wrapped up her character arc quite nicely at the end of season 1. But of course, I should know by now that nothing in the Whedonverse is ever quite what it seems.

A thought

I realize that Joss is loyal to his actors, but I also want the RIGHT actors in the right parts, thats what makes a show great.  Who had heard of David B (Angel), or Eliza, or even Nathan Fillion before Joss shows.  Thats' what made those shows great, the writing, the casting.  Let's hope that Joss doesn't get caught up in his ''fave'' casting and sees the bigger picture.

I that wasn't gonna watch

I wasn't gonna watch Dollhouse this year because of TSCC. I'm not taking the cancellation of the show on dollhouse but I didn't had the interest in the show but only watch it cuz it follow TSCC and it was a really good line up imo. But hearing that summer glau will be joining in a recurring role..i'm kinda of excited for it and will have to watch dollhouse to see how her storyline fits in. Though, i wish TSCC wasn't over.

By the way...Charisma Carpenter

If you are after a Charisma fix.

Saw her in the sneak peek of Season 2 Legend of the Seeker, very loosely based off the Sword of Truth series by bestselling author Terry Goodkind.

She plays a Mordsith (elite group of women warriors dressed in skin tight leather outfits used to torture people with their own magic). In the trailer she shares a kiss with fellow costar Cara (Tabrett Bethell). Not sure if this is for the ratings or if she will be playing one of the lesbian characters from the books.

I so wanted to like this show, but can't

My girlfriend and I are huge Buffy/Firefly fans and were excited when we heard about this concept, but trying to watch it is like pulling teeth! It got to the point where we'd threaten each other~ "If you don't shut up, I'm going to make you watch Dollhouse! Then you'll fall asleep!"  It's never funny, rarely, barely exciting, and I have a huge huge problem with the fact that they all seem to be basically erasable prostitutes.  The show keeps saying "Oh they can be anything!" and then sending them out on sex dates.  And the whole re-using of actors thing is annoying and distracting (especially when you don't have actual good plot or writing to divert your attention).  In every episode I find myself thinking "So once Faith gets back to the base, Fred will wipe her memory unles Wash gets to them first!"  Then I start remembering good shows and get irritated again.  And now we're adding River to the mix? Hire someone else! Or just get rid of this crap and make more Firefly! I realize I'm in the minority, but I dislike this show on so so many levels. You can do better, Joss!!

The feminist question

I'm going to have to disagree.  I think the whole point of the show is showing the expectations placed on women.  This is Echo's journey, this is a show about women placed under expectations and have to break out of them. Where would the journey be if Echo was a place where she was totally respected as an individual now? That would be a nice utopia, but women face oppression and stereotypes everyday. This mirrors that, on a larger scale, showing us the problems with culture and the way with think about women.  I do not think Joss is saying "The dollhouse is totally good! They only do good things! This should really exist, people should really be treated like dolls!"  He's made it clear we're supposed to be troubled by what the dollhouse does, this is not a black and white show, and I think the intent is really to point out some of he oppressions, stereotypes and assumptions made about women.  And where do you find a show with so many complicated strong main female characters who constantly defy expectations?  Watch more, give the show more of a chance.

And, for more talk about the feminist question with this show, try this link:

 really interesting.

It raises a lot of questions

It raises a lot of questions about the morality of using others and the crucial role of consent, the ways in which we are "programmed" to respond in various circumstances, and the degree to which we are autonomous individuals with set personalities.
