Spice Girls back with more seasoningPeople of the world, get ready to spice up your life … again. Apparently, the world just wasn't savory enough. By now, every boy and every girl has probably already heard that the Spice Girls are reuniting for a world (well, eleven cities) tour. My response to the (pre-)Fab Five’s announcement is a resounding “zig-a-zig whaaa?”
Listen, I’m not going to get into an academic discourse about the musical merits of a group whose lyrics include such profound social statements as “slam your body down and wind it all around.” While I was never a fan (I’m averse to all groups who have their own dolls), I didn’t hate the group. They represented a superficial kind of “Girl Power” (gosh, remember when that was all the rage?) that, while simply a by-product of its marketing machine, still seems downright scholarly compared to the trash-talking, lady parts–flashing and rehab-entering that is so in vogue with today’s starlets.
Also, at least they all had easily identifiable personalities: Ginger, Scary, Sporty, Posh and Baby. (Though, side note, what’s up with calling the one person of color in the group “Scary”? Uh, not cool.) By contrast, try naming more than two of the Pussycat Dolls and telling me anything about their “personalities” other than a penchant for wearing as little clothing as possible.
My real beef with the Spice Girls reunion is how quickly we’re recycling our nostalgia. After a mere nine years, are we really going to get misty when we hear those first few notes and then an exuberant, “Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really want…”? I mean, sure, the camp value alone is almost enough to warrant a ticket. But, really, I think it’s the media that is the most happy to have the women (come on, they’re in their 30s and deserve an upgrade) back. The then and now retrospectives are enough to make graphics editors really really really wanna zigazig ha. Ten years later and I still have no idea what that really means.

Mel C looks...
DELICIOUS!
Yummeh.
I'm WAY happy they have got together for this. I can't wait to TRY and get tickets for London.
Woo!

but they're just copying someone else...
Take That <333
No offence to Spice'ers but the boys could actually sing. Well, not all of them (cause they were lacking the confidence i believe as they can certainly carry a tune, but there was the "i'm the new improved George Michael" Gary Barlow so..) but from the Spice Girls, only Sporty could sing.
Anyway, she was always my favourite and the hottest of the bunch.
Or butch.
They're screening "Anal Pandemonium" at the Velvet Illusions adult theatre.
You know where to find me.
oi
Wow
I understand how 11 years ago was awful for anyone with half a brain when the Spice Girls rolled onto the music scene. I however, was only a preteen and fell madly in love. It was one of my first moments I realized I was gay. I am still excited about the idea of a tour, especially since I am old enough to go without my mother.
They were adorable then, and now that they are all a little more mellow, and have put a lot of the past behind them, especially by forgiving Geri Halliwell for walking out on them, they are still adorable. I, however, am still mad at Geri for walking out... but at least she came to her senses. This is like a feel good movie, and I am loving it. I am so sick of hearing about Lindsay smoking crack, etc.
I love the spice girls. Let's get back to when grabbing someone's butt was the taboo thing to do. Just hit mute if you dont want to hear them sing.

Shame? More like guilty pleasure!
Please, I'm going to pay a crapload of money for front-row seats. I've been waiting for this reunion ever since Geri left the group.

It makes me so sad what's
how does she get thru airports...
those things look like weapons of mass destruction!
While musical merits may be debateable you cant deny that the spice girls were more than just a band, they were one of the first to transition into a BRAND as well. Its nothing special now, when every second celeb has a clothing range, perfume, restaurant, and hotel in their name, but for their era the spice girls marketing was revolutionary. Their image could sell anything, from diaries to backpacks (have you ever seen a kid with a pussycat dolls diary?)
and who didnt have a soft spot for girlpower? I fully credit victoria beckham for my hasty transition from baby dyke in boys shorts to uber femme chic. I was nine and in love!! Marketing gimmick or not, the spice girls brand of girl power really did make me proud to be a girl, and helped me to realise that femininity isnt synonymous with weakness. I really think that my exposure to them at such a young age changed my persepective for years to come.... which is a little scary for nine year olds today considering the pussycat dolls!!!
'viva forever' :-)
Maybe ...
a couple of those girls will share a meal with Victoria/Posh. David surely doesn't feed her.
Lisa
but what the hell happened
but what the hell happened to Mel B's hair???
Spice Girls, Here I come!
brightside
In a way, i'm glad they're back... only for a short time! Thinking on the positive side, this could be way worse... mel b' babies could be making a new 11-members-band!
But Mel C does look good! She were my secret crush!
God
I used to love them (I was 7, okay!). But, like the previous poster, the pictures you put up just remind me of how cute Posh Spice used to be and how creepy she looks now. She should be called Scary Spice. Scary Spice and Sporty Spice are looking great, though.
i'll admit it
haha
That movie was freaking hilarious. Didn't make too much sense... but it was freaking hilarious.
Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
Amy: You shut up
Janet: A gay slut.

awsome
lol i totally had the spicegirls backpack, among other things lmao, like so many i was totally in love with the spice girls, mel c was my fave and still is, she was on loose women (like the view but english) the other day shes so cool.
its only thinkin about it now tht i realise my obsession with sporty was far more than admiration, the same goes for charmed, and many other programmes, im so gay lol
anyway im def nostalgic type i love that they're comin back, im 17 now so i was of the spice girl age, as kef3832 said the british pop scene was just full of boybands, when the spice girls came along it was like insanely cool.
emma bunton was on strictly come dancing and every time louisa (eastenders actress) said she can't believe she's friends with a spice girl, i cried, well filled up at least (no idea why lol) thats how irrational i am when it comes to the spice girls,
but i never saw them in concert, i had the video (ahh videos the good old days), i totally wanna see them this time round!
www.myspace.com/jo_16_
also
does anyone else, unintentially or otherwise, seem to have the lyrics ingrained in their mind, i wasnt even one of the kids who practiced singin their songs into a hairbrush (though i did do the dance routines)
10 years later i can still pretty much sing each song word for word (and i never remember song words), maybe we were all brain washed, anyone else??
www.myspace.com/jo_16_
Oh we were all
Oh we were all brainwashed... I remember nearly every word too. It's kind of scary, what popmusic can do to an 8 year old brain...

Omg
Spice Girls. Loved. Them.
Spice Girls: Loved. Them.
I feel like this concert/group reunion is totally fulfilling an entire generation's worth (ok, maybe more like 'a decade's worth'), of 16 to thirtyish year old young women's desires to return to an 'age of innocence'...or at least an age when we were younger, naive....and only *just* discovering our deep down desires...
I, for one, am absolutely THRILLED and will be trying my best to attend a show!
(I still have a pic of me, twelve years old, posing for the camera like Sporty Spice...and then being absolutely thrilled for years after, that I was able to pull off that 'Sporty' look.)
If only I had known that 'sporty' actually meant... 'Gay'.
Oh, how I love those retrospect gay 'memories'.
Mea Culpa
Alright... Alright... I'll admit it... I did buy their first CD... Well it feels better having said the truth !
And I would go to their concert... IF I could get free tickets ^_-
However I would never had imagined how lesbians were crazy about the Spice Girls. Was something hidden in the lyrics that I didn't get at that time ??!?
just think
some psychologist somewhere is tryin to work out how to prove that the spice girls turned millions of young girls gay, because of this blog hehe . . . maybe they did lol :P

Yes! Man, I remember bopping
Yes! Man, I remember bopping out to these guys when I was like six 'til I was eight. They were my first concert, I was proud to say. And damn, was I torn between Sporty and Baby. I think I looked up to Sporty, in a way, and I KNOW I had a huge crush on Baby. Oh man.
------
Rawr! <3
where's ths shame?
I bought (and still have) their first CD, their DVD and a poster. So sue me.
Talking of sue me, thanks Sue Me for the Jennifer Saunders sketch playing Mel C. Too funny for words. Dawn French's last line is fabulous - "And don't borrow your Nan's microphone again without asking". Haha!
Was I the only to look at the first photo and think "OK, so only three of the originals and two ring-ins"? I absolutely wouldn't have picked either of the Mels if they'd fallen on me. What a difference a decade makes. Of course, we all get better with age (he-hem)...
I hope against all hope that Mel C is actually out at last (the news had escaped me though), but we'll always have that line from Bend it Like Beckham - "There's a reason Sporty Spice is the one without a boyfriend you know..."
And all the talk of concerts reminds me of the first time I ever saw or heard of the Spice Girls. I was in a hotel room during a business trip (oh yeah, I was NOT a pre-teen), idly flipping channels one night when I came across the Spice Girls concert in Istanbul (what??) and the audience seemd to be full of English people, mainly women in their late twenties. "Hello", I thought to myself. "What's all this then?" And sure enough, the camera panned the crowd and in one row was a line of bored looking children and behind them were their mothers - dancing with plastic pints of beer in their hands and just letting loose. I don't care how daggy it is - the Spice Girls won me over right then and there.
Their music is utterly crap though. But they'd better bloody well tour in Australia!!!
Not Only But Also
I knew this would make its
LOL
Goodness
A little tighter and those things (Victoria's Boobs) would have gone POP! and say hello to the world.
Mel C not to bad at all
I admit. I used to be a fan to which included, pens, postcards, the whole lot (never got the dolls though. Dolls scare me).

I wonder whether they're
I wonder whether they're gona switch their nicknames. I mean looking at them now, Victoria looks Scary, Geri in a long sundress and Mel C looks kind of girly. WTH!?!
p.s. Mel B looks great btw!
I...
Always liked the song Viva Forever actually...totally messed up video though.
All that time ago I didn't bat an eyelid at it though, then again I was about 10 or 11.
Mel C was always my fave, liked her solo stuff too.
She rocked the Friday Night Project last week too! :-D
Ara!
Just occured to me, hehe, that her song and vid 'Never be the same again' could be quite gay if you thought about it, no bloke in the vid...and feat Lisa Lopes(RIP)

aviones platedos rosando los tejados
back in the day
I was completely in love with the Spice Girls, i watched the movie i dunno how many times!
My cousin came out from England (she was about 7 and i was 8) and she taught me all the moves to "Stop", we thought we were so cool, we performed it to everyone we knew.
I loved them then and i was devestated when Geri left coz they weren't the same without her, but i don't feel the need to dig out my tapes..
Finally
So I'm glad they're back, at last! Even if its for a short bit.
i told ya so!
ive been saying it for years:
the spice girls will re-unite!
haha. and im going to try my best to make it to one of their 3 U.S shows. i have been waiting for this moment for too long. lol after all these years i am still obsessed with the spice girls. lol i still listen to the music and i still watch spice world (which my friend bought for me on dvd for my last birthday!) haha
i love the spice girls and all i have to say is:
Viva Girl Power!
:]
Oh no! What happened to them?
They all look so plump...
Sporty spice doesn't look so sporty now....and mel b. isn't so scary anymore.....ginger spice isn't so gingerly at all......
Yea...it's good they're uniting but should they all still represent those strong women we know 10 yrs ago? i would rather like to hear them sing than see them perform this time as the spice girls....coz i prefer to keep the spice girls [that i know of] in my mind as much as possible...than have it altered with this mature version of the spice girls....
Oh yay. Or is it?
Pussy-who?
(lol, I just love how everybody ignored the naming challenge... or wait. was that a 'rhetorical' challenge?)
You know what? I would just number them. That's right. Skanky #1, Skanky #2, Skanky #3...
Now let me briefly think back to the era of 1996/97... yes, right. Once again I remember why I don't let my mind travel back there. Sickly pop is sick. :p But one thing I have to admit and as much as anyone wants to argue, from the point of view of Europe and the pop being played at that time... Spice Girls, with their easily sing-along music and somewhat PSA lyrics, were the most listenable thing of that time. And also kind of the best role models of that time for the then easily influenceable generation of teenage girls (and boys sp?).
By which I mean to say (in a less poetical way) something exactly like still seems downright scholarly compared to the trash-talking, lady parts–flashing and rehab-entering that is so in vogue with today’s starlets.
But I love how they gained curves. Bloody yummy. Well, cept for Victoria. I cringe every time I see her out of fear that botox or silicone or some other unnatural substance might start spurting out of her any second. O.o! She's the new Scary Spice!
...And if I die today I'll be the Happy Phantom...
