Shakira the shimmy-shaking scholarFor the most part, the things I enjoy about Shakira are decidedly non-cerebral. Certainly, this does not discredit or downplay the many philanthropic endeavors by the Colombian superstar. But to be honest, whenever I see her perform, my higher brain functions shut off as I stare mouth agape and grunt out a monosyllabic “Hips. Hips go fast. How hips do?”
Still, it’s nice to know that even while she is turning my brain into a primordial puddle, the woman herself is expanding her horizons. People en espanol reports that the singer has been studying the History of Western Civilization all summer at the University of California, Los Angeles. Man, Shakira’s “What I did over my summer vacation” essay is totally going to put Paris’ to shame. Of course, anything not written in in crayon would probably do that already.
Actually, this news reminds me why I’m drawn more to some artists than others. Despite her (and her hips’) hypnotic effects on my ability to form complete sentences, I enjoy Shakira because she seems like a genuinely interesting and interested person. She has a curiosity about the world and other cultures that you don’t see every day in your average pop singer. I mean, not too many celebrities like to discuss Carl Jung during interviews or can claim a Nobel Prize winner like Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez as a close friend.
I also like that Shakira doesn’t just rely on her seemingly supernatural dancing abilities. She sings, she dances and she plays guitar. OK, fine: Eric Clapton she is not. But at a time when it’s hard enough to find a pop performer who actually sings on stage, an artist who straps one on, well, that deserves a standing ovation. Or perhaps, given her recently scholarly pursuits, an apple.

substance
Also, while a lot of pop songs are completely inane (and aren't even written by the performer), some of Shakira's lyrics are really quite beautiful.
Although I don't think it was the lyrics that prompted my brother to buy the video for "La Tortura"...
She does good charity work, too.
Shakira en español
I love me some Shakira
I love everything about this woman except for the Yankees hat she sometimes wears..and I blame that on her fiance :)
She's one of the only grounded and humble artists out there. Especially when you consider how few of the superstars even acknowledge their fans when the cameras aren't on.
Shakira's been known to stand out in frigid weather to sign autographs and her brother/bodyguard at times has had to push her along to get her to stop signing or she'd be late for her next appearance.
Some of my favorite interviews with her are the ones where she sort of forgets she's doing them because she's too busy making eye contact and smiling with/at her fans.
So, thank you Dorothy for making a blog for Shaki :)
She makes me feel "special"
lesbian without borders
honestly, i kind of feel
What can I say
Her voice!
And what about that voice??? I love it, it's like hypnosis! She's so different from every other singer... But I do preffer her old spanish songs...
A funny thing happened between me and Shakira (well, actually between me and myself about Shakira). I really liked her songs all the way back in 95, when "Pies Descalzos" album was realeased.
Some years later, she started to sing in english and, at the beggining I didn't like the change. I felt like her english songs could be sang by any other singer. It wasn't all "shakiraleske" anymore. And than came college, work, and I didn't accompany her evolution.
And not so long ago, I watched a new clip on tv. And she had became a completly different person! She now dances! a LOT! Oh God, how does she do THAT??? O_O
There you have it, she conquered me again. And I actually can appreciate her new style... She seems more comfortable singing in english nowadays!!!
Shakira...
shakyra, mi amor!!
is there anything this woman can't do? she is just Amazing! and her beautiful all-natural body and the way she shakes it.. breathtaking! and yes she is gorgeous, smart, talented, kind and funny.. perfect!
great artist.
go shaky!
She's truly talented and always willing to change herself
Shakira. I remember hearing of her when I was younger, in my early twenties, and she was this big spanish sensation. I saw her singing on a Grammy's show I believe. Even her voice in spanish was powerful. I then remember reading an interview or biography on her. She taught herself english so that she could write an english album I believe, and that to me, is awesome. She is always ready to change, or do whatever it takes to reach as many fans as she can, without the barrier of language and cultural differences. Her music is very infuential, and you cannot deny that when she starts going, so do your feet. She seems well rounded and very down to earth, and ready at all times, to give the fans what they want. A non-stop performer from beginning to end. I think we will see her years down the line, still going strong and moving those hips.
