Hot or Not? See Scarlett sing

So we all know Scarlett Johansson is hot. Oh, right, and she can also act. But the more pressing question right now is, can Scarlett sing? The starlet is set to release her first album, and if reports are true, at the very least we’re in for something intriguing.

Now, anytime I hear that an established actress wants to sing or that a famous singer wants to act, I get a little skeptical. Not that it can’t happen. But for every Julie Andrews and Barbra Streisand, there are at least a dozen Eddie “My Girl Wants to Party All the Time” Murphys and Don “Heartbeat” Johnsons. Still, the more I hear about ScarJo’s upcoming album, the more I think it might not be just another cringe-worthy vanity project.

First came word that it would be an entire album of Tom Waits covers. Yes, that Tom Waits. The two-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who is part street busker, part plaintive poet, part vaudeville showman and all gravely growl. Color me impressed.

Then came news that Scarlett was cementing her indie street cred by collaborating with members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration, along with producer David Sitek of TV on the Radio. Scarlett apparently spent 33 days recording her debut in Maurice, La. Studio owner Steve Nails is already predicting multi-platinum sales and Grammy wins. Whoa there, buddy: Way to lower expectations. He also said her sound was "very avant garde. She sounds like Marilyn Monroe." Hmmm; sure he didn’t mean to say she looks like Marilyn Monroe?

Of course, Scarlett has dabbled in music before. Earlier this year at Coachella, she sang with the Jesus and Mary Chain (well, if you consider repeating “Honey” over and over again singing). And she has memorably appeared in other artists’ music videos, including “When the Deal Goes Down” for Bob Dylan and “What Goes Around ...” for Justin Timberlake. And then there is the little business of the song she recorded for the celebrity compilation Unexpected Dreams: Songs from the Stars. Her breathy rendition of “Summertime” (set here to images from the Dylan video) is — well — kinda hot.

Wow

I really wasn't expecting her to be that good; I can't believe that was her singing!

She's right up there with Zooey Deschanel in terms of modern actresses who sing:

(She's not quite as cute as zooey, though.  But maybe that's just me)

Who knew?

The girl can sing! Who knew? I'd read some curious comments about this forthcoming CD, mostly because people really don't know what to expect. I'd say that we can expect something totally different from what we typically get from cross genre celebs. I think it's going to be a winner.

I wasn't really interested until you mentioned the collaboration with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Now I'll be anxiously awaiting the collaboration.

Losing Sleep

I gotta admit that it was keepin' me up at night but now that I know she can sing, everything is well again in the state of denmark, pfft, just another singing, dancing actress to add to the pile...

...and I really do believe that there should be some kind of law preventing people from posting pictures of Tom Wait anywhere near Scarlett or in fact any yummie girl, you can actually feel your eyes going, Yippie! and then Eeeew! at the same time, mucho disturbing.

Sultry...

That was an aphrodisiac if ever I’ve heard or saw one.  After viewing that video and hearing that voice, I feel like I just slowly drank very expensive tequila. Please, please Scarlett, stay away from drugs, alcohol, married men, presidents and anything else that might infect your goddessness.

Once again my A/C is failing me.....

Scarlett would be great starring in ...

a lesbian pulp fiction movie.  I so wish someone would make a movie loosely based on those tawdry and very not lesbian pulp fiction novels from the 1950's but have a happy ending. Scarlett would be perfect as the femme fatale.

And Scarlett's voice reminds me of those singers from the 1940s ... Kinda like Gilda.

Sensual to the max.

I have to agree happykt. We can only hope.  Let us pray……

 Amen.

Wow..

Scarlett is so amazing. I'm glad I finally got to hear her sing.. I have been waiting forever ever since the first word of her doing Tom Waits covers came out. LOVE HER!! I would love to see Scarlett in a lesbian film.. but wouldn't we all. She's perfect. I read a while ago too that she might play the part as Jenna Jameson in Jenna's movie bio. That would be nothing short from amazing.. I pray every night for it lol.

okay

it takes some guts to cover "summertime", but i think she did a decent job. looking forward to hearing this collab with the yeah yeah yeahs fo sho.

Wow

That's a surprise, although it shouldn't necessarily be. That Summertime reminds me a bit of Doris Day, actually. Not quite so much power in the voice (that's what singing musicals does for you), but a similar tone and good flexibility.

guts?

I think it would be wise to wait a bit with all the applause. It really doesn't take much to sing Summertime -- try it for yourself! That's probably one of the SAFEST songs to pick for a foray into singing.

Now... would I say she's hot? Sorry, still not.

Well

I think a lot of the praise comes from the fact that when modern actresses try to sing...they usually blow.  So, when you hear her and she's actually pretty good, it's a pleasant surprise.  I mean, she's no Ella Fitzgerald, but her voice is quite nice.  (oh, and she's not really my type either)
