See Jane Lynch cook with Meryl Streep

Jane Lynch and Meryl Streep in a movie? Together? Is it Christmas already? Everyone’s favorite lesbian scene-stealer Jane Lynch has signed to star opposite Meryl Streep in the new film Julie & Julia. Meryl will play the culinary legend Julia Child, and Jane will play her sister.

The film is based on the memoir (or, more accurately, blogoir) Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by author/blogger Julie Powell. In 2002, Powell was working as a secretary and living in a run-down apartment in Queens. On a whim, she decided to try to make all 524 recipes in Child’s classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking in the span of a year. To chronicle her epic undertaking, she started a blog. Long story slightly shorter, the blog became a book and the book is now becoming a movie.

Added into the mix are Amy Adams as title-character Julie, Stanley Tucci as Child’s husband, Paul, and Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail) writing and directing. While the memoir focused mainly on Julie’s trials and tribulations tackling her year-long adventures in cooking, the movie will bring in more backstory about Child’s life, including her years spent in Paris in the '40s and '50s. Child passed away in 2004, just two days before her 92nd birthday.

I can’t wait to see how Meryl portrays the famed chef. So much of Child’s endlessly enthusiastic style has been caricatured already (hello, Dan Aykroyd). Jane, for her part, will get to act alongside her idol. Though, it turns out that when the two met years ago on the set of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, they could easily have started their own mutual admiration society.

“(Meryl) hugged me, then she gave me a kiss and told me she was a huge fan of Best in Show. And you know, I didn’t expect that at all. I was prepared to bow at her feet, so for her to do that was just incredible. And she held my hand while we talked. I remember watching Sophie’s Choice in graduate school and being just devastated by her, by that kind of acting. So for her to do that — to me? It was a huge moment for me. It was almost too incredible.”

Awww. Now I know Christmas came early. Seriously, two of the best professional scenery-chewers in the business together in one movie? And a movie about food? Is it too early to get in line for tickets?

hmmm

anything with Meryl Streep and Jane Lynch will be worth watching, but, as i recall, Julia Child didn't like the blog, or book, or the idea behind either so it'll be interesting to see how true to the book the movie is.

the book, by the way, is abso-friggin-lutely hylarious.

Streep

I've been keeping my eye on this movie ever since I saw that Streep and Adams were going straight from working on Doubt together to doing Julie & Julia. It's so delicious! I remember watching Julia Child when I was a child, and between her and the Galloping Gourmet I became convinced that anyone working in the kitchen got to baste not just the turkey, but themselves. Hence, why you can always find me in the kitchen between the hours of 4 and 6 pm.

This rocks!

Absolutely the best screen pairing!  Now, can we get Emma Thompson to somehow make a special guest appearance?
