Rock the gay wayLast week, Spinner.com made a list of the “20 Rockin' Gay Moments.” I know, I know — another list. Stop the audible groaning. You know you can’t resist them and, clearly, neither can I. So let’s put on our yelling caps and take a look at this puppy. Of the 20, four and a half are women (the half goes to the Equality Rocks concert featuring female performers like k.d. lang and Melissa Etheridge). Of those, the highest ranking moment was No. 6 which was — wait for it, wait for it — the Britney Spears-Madonna-Christina Aguilera MTV kiss. Oy, does anyone have an antacid? The other ladies on the list:
18. Jill Sobule: She kissed a girl and since then has been quite sweet to her lesbian fan base. Plus, if you get past the novelty number, her music has a poignant delicacy. I would argue that Melissa deserves a spot in the Top 10, if not the Top 5. At the very least, she should be ahead of Michael Stipe (No. 11) and Sinead (No. 9), who both came out after they had achieved success and stardom. Melissa, on the other hands, opened the closet door and then proceeded to have the biggest hits of her career. And what about the top spot? It goes to Rufus Wainwright channeling Judy Garland’s famed Carnegie Hall performance. Rufus? Really? No offense to the prodigiously talented Mr. Wainwright, but I feel that he is too contemporary and too niche to have delivered THE most rocking’ gay moment. None of his albums have cracked the Billboard Hot 200 Top 20, and I’m willing to bet that if you polled 20 people on the street at random, maybe three would be able to name a single one of his songs. Maybe. What would I have picked for No. 1? Let me give you a little hint. It’s just a jump to the left. And then a step to the right. With your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight. That’s right, we shouldn’t have to do the “Time Warp” to realize that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is possibly the most fabulously gay rock moment in the history of, well, ever. Madonna and Britney... riiiight.
Wait. If that made the top 20, where's All The Things She Said? Then again, I don't wanna know...
Still, without the countdown and ranking (done/gone wrong), plus add like 30 more moments (obligatory credit to the Puppy episode)... and voila - a far more decent list. :P
And if I die today I'll be the Happy Phantom...
Rockyyy!!!!
HOW in the name of all that is holy and gay can you miss RHPS?!?!?!?! So gay and so yummy! Frank n Furter is sooo irresistable.
Who put this list together??? So so wrong. T-t-t. And Madonna & Britney? Ugh. They should have gone back further in time when Madonna was ACtually playing with sexuality, like in her book. :)
"How forceful you are Brad. Such a perfect specimen of manhood." Delicious!!!!
Don't dream it, be it.
I agree that melissa
I agree that melissa etheridge should be higher. The woman has guts and a voice. (id say she's got balls but it seems to be a little...well...uncouth.)
And whaddaya know, i also agree with you on the Rocky Horror Picture Show.It is deliciously camp and ..well..will always hold a place in my gay heart as i saw it for the first time at my last major crushes house.
:) oh! rocky horror and unrequited lust. !!!
~I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, I've been secretly falling apart...~
Rufus Wainwright
I only know Hallelujah and that's not even his song, it's a cover. It's awesome though but I think Damien Rice's cover is better.
And Boo to Madonna and Britney.
right on
Damien Rice is the man!
"What the French, Toast?"
You Know
What's really sad, but not really, it's more endearing? I actually did get up and do the time warp!
When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.
- Kate Mulgrew
Me tooo!
How could you not! Let's do it again! At least I have space here, unlike that time in the cinema... Still fun though. :) It's not easy having a good time.
And it's not sad. :]
Don't dream it, be it.

oh, Magenta
I’m usually not big on Top-10 lists – maybe cuz I suck at making them. But I wholeheartedly support RHPS for... anything.

And how in the world Melissa doesn't rank higher than some of those top 10 I will never understand. That's like ranking the top gay television moments and having The Puppy Episode at 12. It just doesn't compute.
Thank You
Thank you for that. Amber..........

Hoop skirts!! (Yes, I will shamelessly plug a friend's stuff. What of it?)
What's Sad...
totally agree about RHPS,
totally agree about RHPS, but you have to include Hedwig and the Angry Inch as well. What's not to love about a gay/transgender punk rock musical?
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
oh rufus
okay, as someone who has recently seen rufus wainwright perform judy garland, followed by one of his best songs 'gay messiah', in drag, i can honestly agree with it being number one. it was possibly the greatest thing ever. i may be biased, cause i effing love rufus wainwright, but i think my head may have actually exploded when he started applying the lipstick and slipping into those heels. oh rufus.
as for the rest of the list, cant say i agree with much of it.
I agree
His music is great and you can't judge music that doesn't place on the Billboard 200 cause some of the best music is something that mainstream people won't embrace cause it's different.
