Relive the oddity of "Twin Peaks" onlineIf the question “Who killed Laura Palmer?” means anything to you, you’re going to want to scoot a little closer to your computer screen. Are you ready? Are you comfortable? Are you in a place a possible yelp of delight will go unnoticed by coworkers or worried passersby? Right, then, here it is: all two seasons of Twin Peaks are streaming for free at CBS.com. Right now. This very second. Totally free. Yelp!
This is, excuse me, a damn fine cup of
That eerie theme song with its placid images of the Pacific-Northwest still ranks among the best opening credits of all time. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. I was obsessed, in mostly a healthy way, with Twin Peaks throughout its two season run back in the early '90s. This totally weird show about murder, the unexplained and creepy characters was like nothing I’d seen or – to be perfectly honest – have seen since on television. I remember my parents, who were normally unconcerned about the innocuous sitcoms and dramas I watched, looked at me midway through the pilot episode and asked, with some alarm, “What the hell are you watching?”
But they, too, got into the show’s bizarre charm. From this seemingly simple case of a homecoming queen Laura Palmer found wrapped in plastic and murdered sprung a universe of iconic images and kooky characters. And while the show wasn’t my introduction to its creator/director David Lynch, it was what got me to watch, and re-watch, his back catalog and subsequent work. Did the show always make sense? Of course not. And, really, that was almost the point. In Lynch’s world, not everything has to make sense. Hence the red room and the Log Lady and the cross-dressing David Duchovny and the soul trapped in dresser drawer handle.
I am both fascinated and frightened by the contents of that man’s brain. Though anyone with the foresight to put Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn and Mädchen Amick (not to mention Peggy Lipton, Joan Chen and Piper Laurie) all in the same series together has to be at the very least a minor genius. Plus it would be unfair to hold him accountable for what has happened to the trio’s careers since.
The short-lived show began to unravel in its second season as the weird got too weird. It also started to give me bad dreams. (Seriously, sometimes I still have nightmares about Bob.) But the real triumph of Twin Peaks was that it got on the air at all. This show wasn’t just odd, it was aggressively, gloriously odd. And now you can relive all the insanity from the comfort of your laptop. Cherry pie and damn fine cups of coffee not included. Submitted by on May 27, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

I love Twin Peaks and
Piece o' cherry pie, please
Wahoo! Thanks for the tip-- rememberance of days past when friends would gather to peek into David Lynch's bizarro world for an hour. Nobody can creep me out like Lynch--nobody (Blue Velvet, anyone?)
Oh, and the otherworldly music, especially that featuring Julee Cruise...oy, can we talk?
omg!
good to know
and awesome, i've never seen it but i love lynch
Please work in Ireland
Could...Not...Resist...Watching
I started watching Twin Peaks because I had met Ray Wise (who played Leland Palmer in the series) and...immediately found myself drawn in by the quirkiness of this show. The characters were fascinating and oh... so...delightfully bizarre!
And...
Who could forget Sherilyn Fenn's talent for tying a cherry stem in a knot...
with her TONGUE?
;-)
Thank you for sharing the news!
(I may find myself captivated once more ;-) )
Free Twin Peaks! Sweet.
Um, Ms. Snarker? In your extensive list of the beautiful girls featured on this wonderful series, you forgot to mention Laura herself: Sheryl Lee is quite the hottie. And, according to her entry on Wikipedia, Lynch was so impressed with her that he developed the role of Laura's cousin Maddy so she could have a bigger role.
I still am dying to see the pilot and Fire Walk With Me.
Also, I know it's been said before, but DAMN, were Sherilyn Fenn and Jill Bennett seperated at birth?
twin peaks!
woooo! i started to watch this while i was in WA in january visiting a friend but only a few episodes. we even drove through the area where TP was filmed.
alas, the CBS player won't let me watch it here in the uk. apparently the content is currently unavailable. did it work in ireland drowneybookgirl?
'that's so unfair'
:(
Noooooooooooo!
"This content is currently unavailable" = no doubt, because i'm in Canada.
Damn it! I've only seen one episode of Twin Peaks.
I'll have to get it on DVD or download instead.
Lynch=Strange
Twin Peaks was so weird that for me it made Mulholland Drive seem almost normal. Thanks, David, for launching the beauty that is Naomi....;)
David Lynch is my hero
"Fire walk with me..."
I am the HUGEST David Lynch fan..totally obsessed...I own the entire back catalogue and flew myself to Italy to see him speak. He really is as wierd and fantastic as youd imagine.
I heard about this free-Twin Peaks thing over at dugpa.com a few days ago. I don't think I can access it in the UK, but that's ok as I have to DVD's! There's nothing like hearing that opening music and drifting away to Lynch-world! I too have nightmares about Bob and think that the scene with Maddie in Season 2 (episode 7-ish?) is the most frightening I've ever seen. I won't spoil it, but for those who have already watched, it's the one with the rubber gloves! Aaaaaargh!
In all fairness you can't really lay the blame for the second season on Lynch. It started well for about 7 episodes. Then Lynch left to go and film Wild at Heart, leaving it in the hands of Frost and a bunch of guest writers/directors who pretty much spoiled it for most of the season. The Evelyn storyline is awful!
But how about the FINAL episode???! Lynch returned to write and direct this, and if you can sit through the second half of season 2, its well worth the wait!!! Best TV I've ever seen!
I bet I'm a bigger David
I bet I'm a bigger David Lynch fan than you...
Yes! I daresay I am THE biggest David Lynch fan on earth! Care to contest that?
Oh yes.
I'll contest that anyday!! Although it may make us both look incredibly geeky. Meh. I already look geeky I guess.
Edited to add: Unless your 'Jerry Horne' or 'dugpa' from dugpa.com. In which case I take my hat off to you and bow out gracefully. However, that would make you a man.
My thoughts exactly
It's a shame Twin Peaks cot cancelled just when its creators (especially Lynch) had started to get the show back on track.
Twin Peaks was my first tv love and my introduction to the genius that is David Lynch. IT'll always be beyond special to me.
Is there such a thing as a healthy obsession?
I heart Twin Peaks. I did when it first aired, and I still enjoy watching the series on DVD now.
I love how it is so weird and so very creepy.
I, too, used to have nightmares about Bob.
There have been plenty of great TV shows since, but none have been as weird. I would love for some more weirdness on my TV.

Who doesn't blog these days?
Love Love Lynch and Twin Peaks
I absolutely love Twin Peaks. I’m too young to have seen it when it first aired, but I bought both seasons last year as part of my growing David Lynch obsession.
I wish more people of my generation would watch it, so few of my friends had even heard of it before I mentioned it.
Twin Peaks also Playing On...
Chiller if you have DirecTv. It's been playing for at least a year now. Comes on at least twice a day.
Just watched the episode Saturday where Leland dies in custody...Bob was definitely freaky. The movie, Fire Walk With Me...also freaky...but mmmm Moira Kelly (of Cutting Edge fame).
David Lynch IS a genius, no question.
I adore David Lynch's movies. The iconic "weird" aura of it, the fever dreams, the music, the overt psychosexual themes, the insight into the human psyche.... all of it. I adore deciphering it. And yeah, I'll admit, it took me a while to get here; but now that I get it, I can really appreciate his work.
David Lynch is unquestionably a genius. Thank you for the link!
