Portia de Rossi on the importance of being married

Friday on The View, the unstoppable force met the immovable object and made the immovable object look pretty darn silly. In this case, Portia de Rossi was the unstoppable force and Elisabeth Hasselbeck was the immovable object.

The Better Off Ted actress stopped by the daytime chatfest and thinks turned gay pretty quickly — as in within 40 seconds quickly. Portia discussed her last visit to the show in 2003 when she was still in the closet and scared of being asked personal questions. And then the topic turned to her marriage with Ellen DeGeneres.

Then infamously conservative host Elisabeth asked Portia why gay marriage had to be called “marriage.”

Elisabeth: Men and women. Women want all the rights of men, but they're not asking to be called men. Do you think — is the word (marriage) more important than the rights?
Portia: No, of course the word isn't more important than the rights. But without the word, we don't have equal rights … Every citizen of this country should have that legal right to be married. Marriage the word actually does mean something because people who see a gay coupling as like a lesser thing in society can continue to be lesser than marriage when really it's the exact same thing. The exact same love, the exact same commitment, love of family, you know.

Yeah, what she said.

It’s wonderful to see Portia so eloquently, yet forcefully dismantle the arguments against gay marriage. It’s also bizarre to see Elisabeth use the women’s rights movement against gay marriage. Um, not to get all Spock, but that was highly illogical.

The whole interview was filled with gems, including Portia’s face when Joy Behar told her that “men will always believe that a woman like you can be had by a man.” I think that smile is the visual representations of “Dream on, fellas, dream on.”

Watch the whole interview here and tell me you don’t feel like giving her a nice, hearty round of applause afterward.

That, immovable Elisabeth, is what you call the unstoppable force of progress. Thanks for the reminder, Portia.

you rock, portia!!! but, this begs the obvious question from me...one of the reasons i don't waste my time on "the view" is because of hasselbeck. the "begged" question from me is....is hasselbeck the typical token "idiot in the circle" or is she actually that stupid with the networks actually condoning her stupidity?

i wish there was a way to push character "mutes" on my television where everyone else is speaking intelligently, yet i am able to mute the stupid one who really doesnt know what they are speaking of or has to say something that makes them actually look as stupid as they really are. GRRR!! sorry. i am ranting off again....

Well said

It's a shame that just cos you're gay, out and in the public eye nobody is interested in anything other than your sexuality and political views on the 'ethics' of marriage.

Well done Portia, held your own girl!

Maybe one day these kind of interviews won't revolve around who you're doing but what you're doing, especially from the top of the interview and not an apparent afterthought!

word. unfortunately, right

word. unfortunately, right now, being gay is still very much "an issue" for a lot of people.  and even if they claim they're not haters, they still think that gays should just "stay in thier place" and stay invisible.

It's true what she said

It's true what she said about men thinking they can still get 'women like Portia'. Too bad they actually CAN'T get women like Portia then, isn't it?

Awesome!

Portia is awesome. The View (especially Elisabeth) is not so awesome.

Also, entirely off topic: I love that all the other ladies are wearing high-heeled strappy shoes, while Whoopi's in her colourful socks and slippers.

That was the first thing I noticed too. Woopi looks like she just left the breakfast table and dragged herself into the studio.

I wonder...

what people like Elisabeth would say if the situation was reversed. It's so easy to dismiss things as just 'words' when it doesn't really affect them. Heterosexual people have the option of getting married anywhere in the world, regardless of religion, so it's easy to say marriage is only a word. For those who don't have the privilege and/or the right, 'marriage' is a lot more than just a word. I applaud what Portia said and how eloquently she said it.

Marriage.

Exactly. And if you haven't seen it yet, watch the video of NYS Senator Diane Savino coming to our defense recently. She has a pretty funny story regarding the "sanctity" of marriages these days.

Loved the Imagine Me & You reference in the recap. And Portia is just beyond words. So many people wouldn't have handled that with half the class she did.

Hear hear!!

I agree!! I just watched that, twice, she was fantastic, put across what I would like to think is a fairly simple point (that gay marriage won't effect anyone except those getting married and all the jobs that come from weddings (ie planners, caterers, dress makers ect) in a smart and funny way, showing how heterosexual marriage is not the whiter than white that some wish it were, and is no longer respected like it was (weather that is a good or a bad thing is another disscussion!!!) and the fact that the gay and lesbian couples who wish to get married, for the most part, have been commited for years, as they have no being able to get married.

I loved her argument, and only wish that my debate and public speaking skills were half as good as hers!!!

ElusiveJ's picture

Thanks Portia!

If Ellen is the president of the queer women's club, Portia is most certainly our First Lady. And I don't think we could ask for a more beautiful, more grounded, more eloquent spokeslesbian.

I've heard a lot of people (especially last year leading up to and following Prop 8) get very frustrated that Portia and Ellen weren't at the forefront of celebrities involved in the struggle. My personal opinion is that being an activist is different for every person and no one should be expected to turn their career into activism if it's not for them. Especially since the two of them being married is (for everyone else) kind of a political symbol all by itself. So while I was never upset that they weren't more vocal before, it's really gratifying to see Portia cspeaking so eloquently in such widely viewed forums.

My favorite moment has to be the look on Portia's face as Elizabeth is saying "they're not asking to be called men." It's so clearly "Is she really that much of an idiot?"

Just Words?

It's funny to me that the right wing spends so much of their time obsessed with words, like whether the President uses the phrase "war on terror" or the word, "terrorist," but don't seem to grasp why the word marriage is so important.

The whole time I was watching that interview...

I kept wanting Portia to ask Elisabeth how she would feel if people were to tell her that she couldn't get married to her husband or that her "union" with him shouldn't be called a marriage.

So Classy

I love the way Portia dealt with that question and the other kind of snide remarks about expressing "her view" that went on in that interview.

She stayed calm, didn't get cross, and made her point beautifully and in clear and simple terms.

She must have to put up with that kind of thing all the time - she understands why of course but it doesn't make it any easier.

A "YAY!" and a question...

Just to echo what everyone else has said - yay for portia and her gorgeous smackdown. However, I was wondering, where did her accent go?  I caught a trace of it towards the end and it was only then that I realized it was AWOL for most of the interview.  Has it simply faded over time or does she downplay it like some actors who play Americans on TV?

Also, I heart Whoopi but she totally phoned this one in. I wasn't sure if she was awake for most of it.

outoutout's picture

Highly illogical, indeed

Forgive me, I'm trying to wrap my head around Elisabeth's logic here...

"Women want all the same rights as men, but they don't want to be called men."...therefore why shouldn't gays want all the rights of marriage but not want to call it marriage?  Is she implying that 'marriage' is a fundamentally heterosexual institution?  That a married couple of the same gender is so fundamentally different from a married couple of different genders that it would be wrong to call it a 'marriage'?  Aaaak... *brain explodes*

Anyway, goodonya Portia for launching a smackdown there. :-) The only thing that's kind of disappointing to me (as an Aussie) is the fact that she's changed her beautiful accent to sound more American.  Portia is from Geelong, VIC, Australia...not that you could tell from watching this.  :(  Oh well.

La Kiwi's picture

Her accent

Even though hearing an Australian accent is like fingernails on a chalkboard (love the trans-tasman ribbing...) anything Portia says is music to my ears no matter how she pronounces it ;-)
Suzzie's picture

Accents

You can hear slight twangs of Australian coming through on certain words. Not surprising that its changed though, my mum is from New Plymouth in New Zealand, moving here when she married my dad (at 25 so old enough for her accent to not be so effected) but you can only tell that she is when she gets annoyed or when she explains things cos she goes up at the end of her scentences (which I find really funny!!!), and as Portia has been in American for a while, and has to do a false American accent for her roles, and lives with an American, its not that surprising it has changed.

Having said all that, it is sad when people loose their natural accents, I whole-heartedly agree!

Fucking Elisabeth.

Was that jackass dropped on her head?  Seriously, someone needs to shut her the fuck up.
nerdandproud85's picture

Well done

Well done Portia you handled that with grace and poise as always. Some people are so fecking stupid that they dont get that distinguishing between people is flipping inequality. Its crazy. Do they actually think that gay people just want to be married just to say they are married , when it means so much more. In Ireland its the same with the civil partnership bill which despite being an improvement on whats there already, is still very much a way of saying being gay is 2nd class citizenhip.

Elisabeth what a moron!

McGirl-ver's picture

portia is awesome

i enjoy her eloquence to the opposition. elizabeth is purely on the view to offer the conservative republican standpoint, even though she's younger. i liked Lisa Ling way better, she has brains. although many people express their dismay of the view, i am glad that portia is willing to put her relationship out there for all the people watching daytime tv shows, a different demographic catagory than ellen. in light of what happened in new york, i think marriage for same-sex couples needs to go the federal route or maybe they should call it something else completely use that word for all legal bonding between both same-sex and hetero relationships, churchs could use another word and we could BAN "marriage" from the dictionary. as portia said it's a love/committment thing not a religion thing. i still want man rights but i am NOT a man...dumby. is she even a feminist? or maybe she thinks she's a woman thereby a feminist?
jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

The View

Hasselbeck is such a tool that I am aware that I'm insulting tools with the comparison. "Women want all the rights of men..." Really, Elizabeth? Is that where you're going to jump off with your point? A pointless point, at best, that goes nowhere, and then drowns in a pool of its own mess.
micks_ter's picture

lena headey couldn't have put it any better!

love the imagine me and you reference. and obviously portia is seven shades of excellent. she's getting better at interviews too; not as nervous as she used to be. marriage has clearly served her well!

Elisabeth is intelligent

Elisabeth is intelligent enough to use semantics to draw far-fetched parallels between 2 situations, but only uses it to reach her own ignorant and irrational conclusions. I'm both impressed and disgusted.
Jenna.Lyn's picture

how funny, i was thinking

how funny, i was thinking the same thing.  unfortunately, people like her (and bill o'reilly, glenn beck, etc.) are probably extremely intelligent.  i think their "success" depends on their being grossly offensive.  i often wonder if they ever go home and think, "wow, i can't believe so many people are buying this crap," or if they're just assholes that really believe what they're spewing.  either way, i wish i could handle their kind with a grace like portia's. :]
Mathilda's picture

I also think Elisabeth is

I also think Elisabeth is intelligent, which is kind of unfortunate.

I'm also strangely attracted to Elisabeth, which I'm afraid I have to seek councelling for (repressed inner homophobia?). But the woman is one sexy lady.

Thembani's picture

Fail.

I don't know whether I'd go so far as to call her intelligent.

I feel like where Elisabeth Hasselbeck succeeds is in selectively identifying semantics-laiden points (or, quite often, non-points), which are posed relatively well by other people; then ammends the original words to fit the context of the debate she's having at a given moment, emulating a comparable argument with regurgitated information.

That, to me, isn't a sign of intelligence so much as it is evidence that she's just able to identify intelligence in other people and simulate it.  As was the case with this interview, she is usually able to start off with a pretty innovative concept (in this case, using feminism to argue against gay marriage) but when cornered into a situation where she actually has to think for herself she's rendered either silent or hostile...or (on occasion) she just cries.

In other words:  Epic fail.

Edit:  I'd also just like to point out that I quite enjoyed the side-ways/up-and-down glance that Portia shot Elisabeth, whilst twiddling her thumbs.  As though if she didn't find something to do with her hands "rightthissecond" she might reach over Sherri grab to Elisabeth by the neck.  Ha.  Classic.

Michie87's picture

A total waste of brains.

I think the only reason she is there is to grow old with the show as the old lady has... creepy.
