Pop (culture) quiz, hot shot

Quick, guess which of these news items is real?

A. The Monopoly board game is being made into a movie, with Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst being considered for lead roles.
B. Katherine Heigl is launching her own line of hospital scrubs.
C. Dane Cook and Jessica Alba think they’re the John and Yoko of this generation.
D. None of the above
E. All of the above (A-C)

What sounds promising? Clearly it can’t be A, because who wants to watch a movie about a game where your brother cheats and the banker can’t add and eventually everyone gets bored and gives up? And there is no way it could be B; scrubs are so unflattering. Plus, don‘t get me started on C — that’s just flat out wrong. So, it has to be D, right? D?

Would that I were that creative. Sadly, the answer is E: They’re all true news items. Let’s pick apart the insanity together, shall we?

The Monopoly Movie

Wow, that is some crazy, crazy talk. I’m still not sure if news.com.au is a reliable source (they credited the story to the Sunday Times, but after searching the paper’s archives, I could find no reference to the Monopoly movie). But if (big if) it's true, I can’t imagine what the plot would be. And Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Thelma & Louise, Alien) will direct? No, now I’m convinced it’s a hoax. Other board-game based movies (uh, isn’t Clue the only one?) worked because the game itself was a mystery with its own story line. But Monopoly is just about buying imaginary property with imaginary money and by chance winning $10 in a beauty contest. OK, wait, now I see where ScarJo and Kiki fit in.

Scrubs by Katherine Heigl

Coming this fall, the Katherine Heigl Collection is supposed to bring “a new level of style and sophistication to medical professionals who value looking good as much as they value their life's work.” Because all the talented men and women trying to save your life after the 16-car pileup on the interstate really just care about looking good while soaked in your blood. This gets my vote for one of the oddest celebrity fashion lines ever.

Dane and Jessica Pull a John and Yoko

The more I see posters for this movie, the more I want to rip my eyes own and hand them to the nearest passerby for safe keeping. Now Dane Cook and Jessica Alba’s inane comedy is ripping off John and Yoko. Is Yoko abandoning her peace pledge and calling for Cook’s head on a platter? Is Annie Leibovitz smashing her camera equipment in protest to the movie marketer’s sheer audacity? Is nothing sacred? For those who don’t know, the iconic shot of a naked John Lennon spooning a clothed Yoko Ono was taken by Leibovitz only hours before Lennon was shot and killed outside of his apartment building by deranged fan Mark David Chapman. It was used as the cover of a commemorative Rolling Stone after his death. So many things are wrong with the poster parody — chief among them the presence of Dane Cook. God, could that guy be more smug?

Nailed it

You absolutely fucking nailed it Dorothy: Dane Cook is smug. And why? Why, I ask the shattering uncaring darkness, is he so smug? He's not funny at all. Common comedic glibness doesn't translate to being funny, Dane, just FYI since I know that you troll lesbian websites, you shameless reprobate. What I liked most while painfully watching his HBO comedy extravaganza was listening to my kids complain about how unfunny he was. Whee! I did one thing right! And yes, just that one thing.

Hmm.

Never mind.

So wrong.

As a hardcore Leibovitz AND Yoko fan and with the little lump of hate gowning inside of me for Jessica -I am not latina, I don´t even know how to speak "mexican"- Alba, I find this offensive on so many levels. And I am not even a Beatles freak(ok,but I am an Ono-maniac)... I bet you whoever came up with this campaign is sooo proud of himself, managing to piss off people with culture and suprise all the rest of the herd who have never seen this amazing image to begin with and have no clue what it represents. Well, I may just be typing out of pure spite, but the joke is on him. This insanely beautiful photograph, is worth nothing when reproduced in this context. It says nothing. Back then and now for those who understand it, with John and Yoko, it says EVERYTHING about intimacy, love and vulnerability and how it all became so tragic. But  as an advertisment for a cheap comedy...yuk.

I had to think twice about making a comment, seems I carry a curse, every thread I post in...dies.

I Think

A little piece of me just died inside. Not in the good way, either.

When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.

She Was Already Dead To Me

The moment she went blonde for that fantastic four movie, yeah, sure it was for the movie but so what, and now this, it's just sad.

ugh!i can deal with the

ugh!

i can deal with the first two items (as inane as they may be)...but...

dane cook!!!

are you f***ing KIDDING ME???

you are NOT funny, NOT talented, and so not deserving of any LEVEL of smugness!

ugh...and to rip off that famous and beautiful photo is even more horrid.

blasphemy.

that photo is pure blasphemy.  i'm all for imitating pop culture's favorite art forms, so long as it's all about art and not about showcasing meatheads.  and dane cook and jessica alba are meatheads.

what's worse is they totally photoshopped that photo!  at least john and yoko kept it real.  there's beauty in that realism.  nope, it's utter blasphemy

now i know what those religious zealots who got pissed at that one artist's depiction of the virgin mary coupled with elephant manure feel like.

Monopoly Movie

It could work. As a screenwriter you always have to find an angle. There are two woman (or group of friends) who decide to make the game more interesting like making the game into a real life competition. They have to own the most houses, property and money. It could tear their friendship apart, this competition and whatnot. Throw in some funny scenes and some sad moments with some more funny scenes and viola, a movie.

Not very original but if this is a hollywood movie, it doesn't have to be. Just very entertaining for two hours.

It's rumoured to be a "racey comedy thriller" though so just add in a lunatic or whatever.

I like this boardgame it's just too bad no one wants to play it!

Ummm...

A Monopoly Movie?  It could work, sure, anything can work but will anyone really see a movie about Monopoly?  Well, I guess there's an audience for everything.  Jumanji worked.  Now I'm interested in seeing how it'll work if there actually is a movie.

I like the board game except that it lasts forever.
