News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Out actress Saffron Burrows in talks to join the "Law & Order: CI" force

Television keeps making me want to get arrested. I mean, how else am I going to meet my favorite fictional lady cop? The latest potential addition to that police roster is Saffron Burrows. The out bisexual actress is in talks with Law & Order: Criminal Intent to join the cast.

Saffron would replace the departing Julianne Nicholson who has been on the series for three seasons first as Chris Noth’s partner and more recently teamed with Jeff Goldblum. Julianne joined the show in 2006 in the sixth season as Det. Megan Wheeler. Her introduction to the show, coincidentally, included some unfazed flirting with a lesbian mechanic.

There are conflicting reports over whether Saffron would be partnered with Goldblum or Noth (my guess is Goldblum since Noth is soon to star in the freshman series The Good Wife with Julianna Margulies). The English actress is an indie film veteran and has starred in the television dramas Boston Legal and the short-lived My Own Worst Enemy with Christian Slater.

Saffron has been romantically linked in the past to fellow English actress Fiona Shaw from the Harry Potter films and talked openly about her preference for women. As she told Tatler magazine in 2000, “I’d say that I prefer the company of women. ... On one level, privacy is important but, on another level, I have no desire to deny certain things.”

So, what do you think of Saffron’s potential casting on Law & Order: CI? And, more importantly, what kind of law could I break to get handcuffed by her?

She could handcuff me anytime...

Saffron Burrows is a lovely, talented actress. From what I have read about her, she seems to be a very committed, focused person with strong beliefs. I've watched any number of rather crappy movies with her in them (Wing Commander anyone?), just for the sake of seeking her.

I only religiously watch SVU out of the Law and Order Franchise, but have caught the occasional episode of CI and it's okay (although the additional of Jeff Goldblum made it decidedly unattractive). It will be far more watchable with Saffron on board.

Is CI still on the air?

I used to like this show, like five years ago.  I thought that they'd pulled it or moved it to USA.  Goldblum is on the show?  Did he replace D'Onofrio?

I loved her in The Bank Job.

CI is indeed still on air

Penny,

I'm not surprised you asked this question. Out of all the L&O shows, this one seems to have the most difficultly finding a permanent home and airing at a decent time.

The show started off showing on NBC, then USA Networks began airing reruns. Then Universal took over both networks and made the decision to pull the show completely off of NBC and move it USA. I thought this would be a positive move; however, now it appears that after just 16 episodes season 8 has come to a screeching halt. Perhaps this has to do with Julianne's exit. Either way, I find myself annoyed with Wolfe and the networks for their inability to remain consistent.

Not to mention, I've noticed out of all the L&Os, this show appears to get the most mixed reviews. Don't get me wrong, I adore this show like I do the others. But it really lost some of its ground after Annabella Sciorra left.

As for Vincent, no he did not leave the show. According to the media, he suffered from exhaustion, so Wolfe arranged for two teams to headline. 11 Episodes were dedicated to Vincent and Kathryn and the other 11 consisted of Chris and Annabella.

I personally enjoyed it when those 4 alternated. Then Julianne came in and Noth left and now I feel like the show is beginning to suffer. Jeff is a wonderful actor but he's basically a knock-off of Vince's character.

I'll be interested to see what Saffron brings to the show if she is hired. I personally wouldn't mind seeing her give the boys a run for their money. Not to mention, her chemistry seems to be consistently good with whomever she's on a show with.

I just hope they manage to keep this show a float long enough for me to enjoy her character. And please USA/NBC/Universal/Whomever has control, put the show in a time slot and keep if there. I just thank the lord DVRs automatically adjust recording times for you.

Interesting

Well, I'd tune in a few times to watch Saffron.  I'm largely over episodic TV; it just doesn't hold my interest any longer.  I need serial shows (like Lost) to hold my attention, or at a minimum I need ongoing threads to connect the shows (like Mad Men).  But if the characters are great, I can suffer through.

Fiona Shaw...

...is Irish not English.

Damn.

Thanks for the corrections. I hate it when I flub my research.

Saffron Burrows.

I love Saffron Burrows and have met her on a few occassions.  She's even sexier in real life than on film, but I have to say she could poke your eyes out with those cheekbones if you're not careful.

she is gorgeous, but...

i agree on those intensely bulging cheekbones--never seen anything like those two guys:)  i also have to say that i've been a fan of hers since circle of friends and was excited when i heard she'd be kissing a lady in red guitar...WOW, was that movie brutal. you know a movie is bad when they are promoting it by informing you that the director's dad is robert redford and so you should of course see it...hilarious.

Criminal Intent

I love the Law and Order franchise (for the most part).  But, I've never really been able to warm up to CI.  It's difficult to describe.  The tone feels very different...sometimes even hammy.  But, to be fair...I haven't seen Noth or Goldblum in it yet and I'm definitely going to give it another go now that Burrows will be a headliner.

Anyway, it's still leagues better than the criminally overrated CSI.  Blargh.

D'Onofrio not Noth

I watched this last season and D'Onofrio and Goldblum are the current male detectives.  Goldblum replaced Noth.

My sweet Saff

I simply adore Saffron. She is my dream woman. Anytime she is on screen, I am a happy chappie.
