The best of Oscar's 80th

Hey, did something happen in Hollywood last night? Oh, right; a bunch of people went home with shiny naked golden men. While some may quibble with a few of the winners, last night’s Oscars telecast was a night when Tinsel Town pretty much got things right. Sure, I would have loved for Juno to sneak in and steal No Country for Old Men’s Oscar for Best Picture. But that might have incurred the wrath of Anton Chigurh, and the last thing you want to do is to make a man with a Dorothy Hamill haircut and a compressed-air gun angry.

The evening was largely a classy affair, with lots of first-time winners, loads of heartfelt speeches and even a couple genuine surprises. So in the spirit of honoring excellence, here are a few awards of my own. May I have the envelope, please?

Best Straight Allies: Cynthia Wade and Vanessa Roth

The filmmakers won for their short documentary Freeheld, about a lesbian couple’s fight to win survivorship benefits. (Look for more details in Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. this Friday.)

Best Upset I Didn’t Know I Wanted: Marion Cotillard

I thought I’d be mad at Marion for upsetting my personal favorite Julie Christie for Best Actress, but after hearing her exuberant, charming and sincere speech, I’ve fallen in love instead.

Best Use of the Words Nipple and Buttocks in an Acceptance Speech: Tilda Swinton

The surprise Best Supporting Actress winner accepted her trophy with a hilarious, “Ohhh, no,” and things only got better from there. Nipples, buttocks and the Batsuit all made it into her speech. For that, I will even ignore her designed-by-Hefty-Bags dress.

Best Rocking of a Tattoo That Will Make Your Grandma Blush: Diablo Cody

The Juno scribe (and, as the now-fabled story goes, former stripper) took home the hardware for Best Original Screenplay, and in the process, became the role model for misfit girls everywhere who think they might have a story worth telling, too.

Best Realization That You Are in the Presence of Greatness: Daniel Day-Lewis

Now that’s how you approach the Queen, I mean, Helen Mirren.

Best Impromptu Audition for the Role of Peter Pan: Renee Zellweger

Though, if she really wanted to go for it, she should have worn the green tights.

Best Circumventing of the Play-Off Music: Markéta Irglová

After her Once on-screen (and off-screen) partner Glen Hansard gave his gracious thanks for winning Best Original Song, Markéta was played off stage by the orchestra. But after the commercial break, host Jon Stewart brought her back to the microphone to have her say. It was easily the night’s classiest moment.

Best Evidence That Red Is the New Black

Best Evidence That Pregnant Is the New Black

Best Evidence That, No, Really, Black Is Still the New Black

Look, I realize that Penelope Cruz is probably wearing navy blue, but do you want to see a picture of her or not?

So, who were your favorite winners? Who wore your favorite fashions? And who invited The Rock? Discuss.

Everybody looks so straight

Where is Ellen and Portia or even Melissa and Tammy when you need them???
cosmiccowgirl's picture

Good point.

No Ellen, no Brokeback Mountain to make fun of. This was the straightest Oscars in a long time.
rocker_girl's picture

Agreed

I was thinking the same thing.  After such an inclusive Oscars last year it just seemed really straight.  The only lgbt moments that I can remember are the win for Freeheld and the Producer who thanked his partener.

Rockstar's picture

yeah but...

True, but the winners were "related" to us.. lol... I mean..
- Diablo Cody
- Freeheld

That's not bad at all!! I was really happy for them.. Plus, we got to see Ellen Page..
It sucks that i couldn't watch it entirely though.. see, in Argentina it started at 11:30pm and ended at 3:30 am (not to mention i had to endure horrible translations!!) and of course, after desperate attempts to stay awake, i fell asleep.. grrr!

clonchi's picture

true!

here in Peru it started at 8 pm, so I got to watch the whole thing... on TNT, because NO WAY was I going to endure another horrible award show with translations...

I liked it a lot, though I would've liked to see Cate Blanchett win over Tilda Swinton... still, her acceptance speech was damn funny!

Niuxita's picture

Peru!

Frecuencia Latina no transmitio la ceremonia como siempre? Que bueno por TNT, la unica razon por la que nunca vi los Oscar antes de este año es por el horrible doblaje que siempre hacen (ahorita estoy en Canada).

gypsywee's picture

Don't forget...

The two oscars won by the Once singer/songwriters kissing backstage...lol
Hollywood Marie's picture

I disagree

There was no Brokeback Mountain, or movie of that magnitude nominated this year, but (excuse me for forgetting names) the winner for best song wanted to make two Oscars kiss (adding "this is Hollywood" for better or worse), which Jon Stewart reiterated for us, Freeheld won and a few human rights sentiments were expressed in the acceptance speech, and the last winner thanked his (male) partner, without whom, he said, his Oscar would be a hunk of metal (or something to that effect).  So, I didn't think it was "so straight."  By the way, how does a person "look straight?"  I mean, I look straight if you want to go by stereotypes.  And I'm sure you don't.

Gaby's picture

Really?

I couldn´t really listen to the original acceptance speeches cause of the translator. But it is cool to know that he mentioned his partner.
Mikki Ken's picture

No offence meant

The comment regarding the Oscars “looking straight” was made in reference to all the pictures posted with the blog post.

If you look at pictures from last year you will see Ellen Degeneres and Melissa Etheridge proudly wearing their suits and working that butch magic.

I guess I just missed that sight and that was my first, probably not very well thought of, reaction as the post went up.

Of course the Oscars had its gay moments; it usually has if you look and listen carefully enough.

However last year there was no need to “look carefully” for those moments of representation and inclusion. It was right there throughout the ceremony; the presenter, one of the heavily nominated films, some of the winners and the winning song.

I just think that the pictures in the post represented an old fashion ceremony with all the women in evening gowns and all the men in tuxedos.

I would like to see a more regular representation in the mainstream media of all the various ways that gay people choose to express themselves via their attire. And as someone who is also “straight looking” I don’t think that seeing more “gay looking” people would be such a bad thing.

Niuxita's picture

hmm

I don't mean to rag on you or anything, I thought this: "I would like to see a more regular representation in the mainstream media of all the various ways that gay people choose to express themselves via their attire." is spot on and I agree. But I can't help but find the term "straight looking" slightly strange. Am I supposed to look a certain way just because I'm gay? Again, I don't mean to be a smartass or anything, I just thought I'd ask, since I've seen this notion expressed elsewhere and I'm genuinely curious. :)

Mikki Ken's picture

To clarify ( I hope :-) )….

Well I guess the best way I can explain it is to say that it’s an issue of semantics.

By saying “straight looking” I take an accepted (and to me a very unfortunate) common stereotype, in this case the whole idea that women need to look all girlie in dresses and men need to look all masculine in suits (preferably dark, with white being the rare exception), and use this stereotype to make my point.

And the point in this case was that I didn’t see any women breaking away from the ranks of the designer evening gown, not to mention any men daring to make an even minor fashion statement; let’s say with a kilt or some other traditional wear.

So all I’m saying is that I wish we could see more sexy women in suits or even an elegant trouser and top combo would do just fine, thank you.

I was actually trying to make the point that there’s no variety in the images of sexy women and men coming out of the mainstream media and we are constantly spoon-fed the same images that try to dictate a fixed idea with regards to good looks, femininity and sexiness.

I just think there is a lot more out there than what we are usually shown (I think this is also one of the main reasons this site exists!!).

For some reason some of you have taken me too literally and seem to have missed my point. Maybe it just wasn’t clear. I hope it’s clearer now. But if not please let me know. I welcome a good discussion.

Niuxita's picture

no worries

I got what you meant, and I totally agree though, sadly, this is Hollywood after all, so I wouldn't expect them to change their mainstream images any time soon. Sigh.

Thanks for taking the time to reply in more detail. :)

MELISSA

I too was wondering where the hell Melissa Etheridge was at  when it came time to hand out the Oscar award she won last year. I would have loved to see Tammy and Melissa take the stroll down the red carpet. Does anyone know if  Melissa was even asked to present the award this year?

Kayyo's picture

Javier Bardem! Eventhough I

Javier Bardem! Eventhough I havent seen the movie yet, judging from the trailers, his potrayal of a psycho killer looks very convincing~

Tilda Swinton seemed genuinely surprised that she did won but then I didnt pay attention to what she was mumbling about during her speech~

I'm a little disappointed that Cate Blanchett didnt win any but I wasnt really expecting her to since the others in the categories was more buzzed about. Cate is fantastic anyway!

gypsywee's picture

Freeheld--nice :D

How great was it that the soldiers announced and gave the award to Freeheld! I loved it... The US Military presenting on honor to a film about a lesbian fighting for same-sex justice! And, to be honest, I wasn't sure whether the first soldier was a boy or girl until he said his name. :)
Gobias Somecoffee's picture

Haha

That was my first thought too.  Kinda ironic.  Heh.  And the guy who named Freeheld seemed kind of gay too.  Am I allowed to say that?  He probably is not.  No. I hadn't heard of that movie until last night but I do want to see it now.

And the best thing last night was Falling Slowly winning!  I didn't think they would win.  So happy.  Glen and Marketa's performance was amazing!  I'm so glad Jon Stewart let her finish her speech.  Great moment.

chanticorae's picture

glad i'm not the only one

as soon as i saw that soldier i thought, "he better not ask or tell anyone anything."

oh and lept up and screamed when freeheld won. best moment of the night.

YENBAR22's picture

IRONY

Oh, the irony of the military soldiers presenting an Oscar to the film about a lesbian issue! I'm sure the military had no idea who was nominated when they agreed to let the soldiers do this. In the future, they won't let that happen again.

Somewhere in heaven, LT.Laurel Hester is getting a kick out of this just like the rest of us.

Ellen Page!! too bad we could only see her a couple of times.

Oscars...

I am still giddy with joy over the so very deserved win of Best Actress for Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose.  I defy anyone who saw her transform into Edith Piaf for this role, to say that she was anything less than Oscar worthy.

It was so wonderful to see the pure shock and happiness on Marion's face as her name was announced for Best Actress and such a delight to see her peers who were nominated alongside her react with what appeared to be honest happiness at her win (in particular Cate Blanchett's reaction).

The overall Oscar show was a bit boring and Jon Stewart really didn't do that great a job (IMHO), but it was nice to see the surprise win for Tilda Swinton and her humor filled speech as well as the eloquent speech by Daniel Day-Lewis.

I thought that one of the best dressed stars of the evening was Katherine Heigl.  I felt that Ellen Page should have taken a page from Ellen DeGeneres and perhaps worn a tux/suit, as she appeared rather uncomfortable in her dress, but maybe it was the nerves of being a first time nominee on the red carpet.  However she did appear to have more fun the day before while dressed much more casually at the Spirit Awards, and that was before she even won her Best Actress award.

I hated Ryan Seacrest and didn't think Regis Philbin fared much better on the red carpet... can't we please get someone on the red carpet who knows who everyone is, who can pronounce everyone's name and who doesn't insult everyone with the stupidity of their questions.  I mean really Ryan asking Jessica Alba about breast-feeding at the Oscars... how low can you stoop?

Worst moment on the red carpet... the crazy Gary Busey encounter with Laura Linney and Jennifer Garner!  Also any Ryan Seacrest moment, almost all of which had me cringing.

Best moments for me were seeing some fresh faces who haven't yet been jaded by Hollywood winning, like Diablo Cody and the previously mentioned Marion Cotillard.

gotta love Marion

I'm happy you've fallen in love with Marion Cotillard ! I have a long time ago...

I didn't get to see the Ceremony yet because I can't stand the translation, you can't hear anything that's being said... But the clip of Marion winning is airing on a loop here, ok maybe not but they spoke about it for at least 10minutes during the news, on every channel, and I'm sure we're gonna see that clip again tonight, and tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow... but well, we're proud of her !

Indeed, gotta love Marion!

Hey, wait...AnotherFrenchGirl?  YAY!  Hello!  ;-)

So Glad Diablo Cody won though

I'm just glad to see that Diablo Cody won an Oscar and wore her own Oscar Gown. Yeah her tat was rockin'.  DC helped break the ever so boring look in Hollywood that women sport around (yawn) Give me something different. Give me Diablo Cody (Badass name too!)

Hollywood changing for those who don't fit the "Hollywood" look? I hope freakin' so!

Echodiana's picture

Oscar

I really liked the Oscar picks this year and it was really a suprise Tilda and Marion won but a good suprise. I loved Tilda's speech. she just looked shocked.

As to the fashion i don't think anybody did anything too horrible. I don't understand Tilda's dress and Heidi Klum's neck adornment is odd but i can't figure out which of the other dresses i liked more. Maybe Kristen Chenoweth, i'm a fan of black. I must agree though that the pictures i've seen of Ellen Page at awards she always dresses simply like she's not trying to make any fashion statements but she's not rocking the boat.

DKHO's picture

Javier Bardem ....

such a Mama's boy. The Spanish part of his speech, which thanked his mother, her parents and grandparents and for all the actors of Spain, was lovely.  As was his mother, Pilar.

i missed it!

Thanks so much for this recap, I was oddly enough, in acting class during the telecast and do not have TiVo so thanks for filling in the blanks the After Ellen way!

PS How much do I love Tilda Swinton? Thiiiiiiiiis muuuuuuuuuch!

Gaby's picture

Since I had to endure a

Since I had to endure a terrible translation I wasn´t able to understand most of the things that were said (listening at 2 people talking one over another sucks). But when they delivered Freeheld´s prize the translator was speechless and I managed to overhear something about "same-sex" and it made me really happy.

PS: of course the translation to that part was mentioned as "discrimination" never mentioned the same-sex part, but still.. they won!

HOLLA!

Marion Cotillard...WOOT!!  "You rocked my life!"  "There really are some angels in this city!"  My long standing crush was only permanently sealed with her acceptance speech, spoken in that lovely French accent!!  She could not have possibly been any more adorable and sexy ALL at the same time.  Not to mention Tilda Swinton, Cody Diablo AND Freeheld wins...Oscar life IS good!!

i was so glad when Freeheld won!  and Marion Cotillard was amazing . . . love at first acceptance speech.

Helen Mirren can knight me any day!

Pretty good

My faves: HELEN MIRREN....need I say more?  So glad that Cotillard and Cody won. Loved that Day-Lewis bowed to Helen...good job man! Cotillard's speech was so adorable and Jon Stewart just wasn't funny. Am I alone on that last one?

Ediana's picture

Stewart, Cotillard, and Ellen's woman

The acting choices were strong across the board.  I preferred Christie or Linney for best actress but Cotillard was very touching in her acceptance speech (and on a superficial level incredibly beautiful).  Loved Freeheld winning (and a soldier announcing it - interesting) and also Taxi to the Dark Side (catch it - it's a great movie).  Swinton's speech hilarious.  Stewart was a terrific host.  Ratings will be bad but who cares (well besides the network).  The Oscars should be about rewarding the best films.  No prob with No Country For Old Men winning. Shame about Cody winning - the other screenplays were far superior.

Also glad Ellen Page brought her apparent girlfriend to both the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars.  If Tina Kennard has been involved she would have been told to bring Zac Effron.  Great for Ellen not to play that part of the Hollywood game.

Daniel Day Lewis and Javier Bardem may be the two greatest living male actors so to see them both rewarded, exciting indeed.

Ellen Page love

I agree completely re: Ellen Page should have worn a suit! A femmy suit, but a suit!

She looks mighty fine in a suit!

I didn't really know anything about Freeheld, but their acceptence speech was so nice and heartfelt! Buying the DVD of it now!

not without my coffee's picture

To my great suprise

I actually think the Academy awarded the right people this year. It's been quite a long time since I watched an entire Oscar's ceremony without getting into some sort of rant about how the people on the board votes.

I'm especially thrilled about:

The award for best sound editing to Karen Baker Landers and Per Hallberg, The Bourne Ultimatum - it's not every year a woman and a Swede gets an Oscar in this category.

The award for best Art Direction to Dante Ferretti (Art Direction) and Francesca Lo Schiavo (Set Decoration) for their brilliant job on Sweeny Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Robert Elswit's award for best cinematography in There will be blood.

Me, geeky? No...

Seriously, have you ever seen anyone look more gorgeous pregnant than Cate?

As for Ellen Page, hmm, won't jump to conclusions as of yet, but if she is gay or bisexual, well I will say WELCOME!

Marion Cotillard!!!!

Yayyayyay!  I was so excited she won.  Her acceptance speech "rocked my lfe", as did the fact that Cate Blanchete looked even more excited than Marion did.

The Once song was great as was Tilda Swinton.

Oh, and I think someone mentioned this but: does anyone know who that blonde girl who came with Ellen Page was?  My first thought was "Girlfriend".

its a disaster's picture

ohhh my

Diablo Cody, that is the first time I have even seen her, and ohhhh my she is stunningly beautiful. That is one sexy woman. And I just absolutely love Ellen Page, she looked gorgeous. I never really care about the awards much, lol. I know that personaly Juno was the best, to me, it was the overall winner.

I'm still endlessly upset

I'm still endlessly upset about my beloved Cate not winning for Best Supporting. Seriously, Academy, have you seen I'm Not There?! But I suppose Tilda Swinton is a valid substitute, with all of her wacky ways. And Cate looked gorgeous enough to make up for no Oscar, so.

Marion Cotillard, Diablo Cody, and Once winning may have been the highlights of the evening for me. I've been in love with Marion since I saw Big Fish, one of my all-time favorite movies, and I told my mom I thought she'd win an Oscar one day. Hehe.

There was an amusing dialogue held in my living room after Freeheld won:

Me: Are they lesbians? How cute!
(The acceptance speech begins, and they say something about same-sex relationships and the military)
Me: Oh, sweet, they are gay!
Speech: I would like to acknowledge all the discrimination so prevalent in our society, which is something that I, thankfully, do not have to go through as a married woman! (or something like that)
Me:... Oh.
And then everyone laughed at me.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...
