News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Oprah wants everyone to see "Precious," so will you?

When Oprah tells us to read a book, we run to bookstore. So now when Oprah tells us to watch a movie, will we all now run to the multiplex? The media mogul appears in a new trailer for the film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire.

The movie, based on the novel Push by bisexual writer Sapphire, has racked up awards and critical acclaim already. But with a newcomer as its star and a its big-name cast in somewhat unglamourous roles, Oprah and fellow executive producer Tyler Perry are putting their considerable muscle behind the marketing push.

Of course after watching the new teaser trailer as well as the original, full-length trailer released earlier, no arm twisting is required to get me in the multiplex. The film looks riveting and devastating. Directed by the openly gay Lee Daniels, the film follows 16-year-old illiterate teenager Precious Jones (played by Gabourey Sidibe), who is pregnant with her second child and lives with her abusive mother (played by comedian Mo'Nique going way against type).

The film also stars Paula Patton as Precious’ lesbian teacher Ms. Rain, Mariah Carey as her social worker Mrs. Weiss, The View’s Sherri Shepherd as receptionist Cornrow and Lenny Kravitz as a friendly nurse John. Mary J. Blige even sings the film’s theme song, “Destiny.”

That’s an impressive cast, for sure. And, for sure, much will be made of the de-glamming of its stars, especially Mariah who appears largely make-up free as the no nonsense Mrs. Weiss. This is no Glitter, clearly.

But I don’t particularly care what everyone looks like, as long as they can act and the story is told well. Plus, if the glowing reviews are any indication, we’ll get to see everyone gussied up soon enough come award season.

So, what do you think? Did Oprah and Tyler convince you to see Precious? Or were you already mentally waiting in line, like me?

I have read the (fiction)

I have read the (fiction) book last year. I thought it was interesting and disturbing; overall it was decent. I will watch the movie because I have been waiting since last year to see it, hopefully it will be in theaters all over the USA.

I was lucky enough

to see a rough cut of this last year sometime.  It was moving, depressing, and amazing.

Its one of the few films I've remember to recommend since I've seen it.

Your brother sounds pretty awesome!

The movie looks pretty good but also depressing. I will probably rent it, so that I don't have a crying fit in the theaters.

I was already

waiting in line to see this movie. Can't wait!

Dear Mariah

Keep the makeunder. It suits you.

No, really. Maybe do some kind of middle ground between that and your everyday look.

Seriously, I thought this film looked amazing before I knew there were lesbians involved, and that's like icing on the cake of awesomeness.

Everytime I see an article, I think its been released.  I want to see this now!

Yes

I haven't read the book, but I saw the trailer in the movies this weekend and it made me cry. That's rare that I will start crying from a preview.

I will definitely go see this.

SAME HERE

I wanted to cry too (held it back) after reading the plot and seeing the trailer. I wanna go see it but also I don't want to. The hurtful thing is that there are people out there who are experiencing or have experienced the same situation as the title character and it just angers me how cruel people are.

Never thought

about seeing it even with Oprah and Tyler promoting it, that was until I saw the trailer.  Now... very interested.

I've been waiting for this movie

......to come out for a long time!! I read the book and loved it, and even the trailer makes me a little teary eyed! I'm really praying that this movie makes it up to a nearby Maine theatre because I really want to see it!!!

Precious>>

Yup- I'll be there.  I read the book earlier this year and it was a tough one to get through (esp. the explicit sex scenes between Precious and her father) but I will be there to support this film, which has an all-black cast, based on the book by a black, out author and directed by a black, out director.

Yup- I'm there. :0)

first trailer

I don't think this is the first trailer, but i definitely liked the first one better. I remember practically tearing up whenever i watched it. This one is all about promotions and the trailer just doesn't do it for me. GO CHECK OUT THE FIRST TRAILER. you will cry!!

THIS STORY IS HEART-BREAKING

IN THE BEST AND WORST WAYS POSSIBLE... THE BOOK HAS BEEN OUT FOR A LONG TIME. I'M 22 AND THE FIRST TIME I READ IT I WAS ABOUT 16-17 YEARS OLD... IT WILL BE AMAZING TO SEE THIS STORY BROUGHT TO SCREEN. IF YOU HAVE A HEART AND A PULSE THERE'S NO WAY YOUR GOING TO LEAVE THE THEATRE WITHOUT CRYING...
bleu_lightning's picture

For sure

I've wanted to see this since it was buzzed about on the festival circuit. Not really into depressing films unless they looks Oscar-worthy, and this trailer definitely makes it look like it.

If J-Hud can win an Oscar, then Mimi can too. (especially after looking at Jennnifer's acting in Sex in the City post-Oscar, I think the Academy can forgive Mariah's role in Glitter).

I have to see this!!

My friend showed me the trailer a while ago and I teared up just watching it. I definitely want to see this but it seems like something I'd cry my eyes out and be really emotional about. Perhaps I'll see it with my mother...

O Noes

Yes, I want to see this movie, and no, I don't want Oprah recommending it. I've been Oprah free for four years or so. I don't want to know what she's reading, what movies she's pushing, or what goddamn 'good things' I need to make my life complete. She should just produce movies and then let the marketing department sell it instead of speaking up and ruining everything.

i wanted to watch it since i

i wanted to watch it since i read the first article about it a few months ago, or read the book. oprah and tyler perry shouldn't have to promote it or mention anything about it to anyone for loads of people to see it, it looks pretty powerful. i bet it will get awards too.

I can't wait to see this

When I first saw this trailer it literally brought tears to my eyes. It looks like such a powerful movie. I am glad that Opera is urging people to see this.

I'm definitely going to go see it, despite the fact that Terry Perry is involved.

I mean, I teared up while watching the original trailer.

There's no way I'm missing this movie.

I saw the trailer for this when I was in the cinema. I looked amazing..really deep and interesting. Also, it is nice to see a fresh topic being dealt in the cinema. Will definately be going to see it!

A must see!

Just watched this recently in a film festival and I still think about it at times.

This really was an incredible experience. I heard lots before actually seeing it, but now I just go around recommending it to everybody. I didnt even know that actress was Mariah Carey until I read this, god I love her more than ever now.

Its amazing, I'm not usually into anything that Operah says, but this is one thing she did that got my full support and love.

I teared up TWICE during the movie, its just incredible.

Am glad to hear

that "Precious" has the backing of Oprah.
However, what would really get my attention is when Oprah comes out on her show and asks her mega fan base to demand that their legislators support gay marriage in those states that still see us as second class citizens.  Perhaps she already has and I've just missed the major news flash -- wishful thinking.

I smell...

...an oscar or maybe even more.

This movie looks really good. I will definitely see it. Not sure if I'll go to the cinema, though. I don't like crying in public. And this movie definitely looks like a tear jerker.

Amy's picture

wow

I certainly didn't recognise Mariah Carey in that photo! Clearly she's getting a little more serious with her age. This looks great but I'm a bit gutted that it hasn't got a release date for the UK yet. It's at the London Film Festival but that's it at the moment I think :( Anyone know anything about British release dates?
carinjo's picture

UK Release

it's showing at the current London Film Festival, but is completely sold out! from what i could find out the UK Release date is Friday, 29th January 2010. something to look forward to in the new year.

This looks like a tough film to watch

As far as Oprah, I pay attention to her and have read some of her book suggestions. This movie, I don't think needs her okay but definitely to get the word out so people know about it. Sometimes Oprah recommends things because of the black story, and has also been taken in by frauds, so that is something to consider, but overall I think she is someone to listen to because she has her heart in the right place, is a humanitarian, and genuinely cares.

There were two films that taught me that there are certain films I can not watch in public, The Color Purple and Sarafina...because of sobbing (crying at movie theaters I can deal with)...I would have to wait until it is on DVD. Even from the stills and short description it's obvious this is a heart breaker.

I could barely make it through the book

The hardest thing I have ever read in my life and then they cut so much out and it is still has the classic elements of a drama....Oscar Worthy indeed.

In This Case

No.  I read the book a couple of months ago and that made me even more interested in seeing the film.  (Hopefully they do the book justice.) I was going to see this film regardless of Oprah Winfrey backing it.  I must admit, I do avidly check out books and movies that she recommends.  As far as products...no.

Yep

Not because Oprah recommended it but because I read the book a few months and was excited when I knew it had been made into a movie. It looks amazing and tragic all at once so it's a must see in my book.

Oprah?

Puh-lease. That woman couldn't make me do a damned thing other than change the channel. I'll see it because AE reported on this movie some time ago and there was no 'boost' from the so-called Queen Of Daytime Talk Shows And Sticking My Nose In Everywhere.

Er... sorry. Never going to be a fan of hers and I can't stand it when people bend over backwards for her, like she's going to come and personally thank you...

Onto something positive - this movie, as difficult as it could be to watch, it was undoubtedly more difficult to perform in, to direct and to create so the least we can do is watch it, even if we're hiding behind our milk duds.

Yes!

Oprah is so influential in a positive way!

I read this book earlier this year when I was in dire need to read books from people of color in a town when I was the only black person.  This was one of the few books the library had. Its really a great book!
