Now that the "Dollhouse" had debuted, are you ready to play?Well, that was interesting. The premiere of Dollhouse on Friday was both ambitious and intriguing. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because advance reviews had been middling at best. But while I can't say I love Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku's return to television just yet, I will definitely keep watching. I've also noticed that Eliza doesn't wear a lot of clothing in it, so — um — how bad can it be?
The high-tech human trafficking drama debuted Friday night to decent numbers. With an audience of 4.7 million it actually beat its returning lead-in, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles by 1 million viewers. It also held onto almost everyone through its second half an hour and doubled its female viewership. Could it be that Eliza's “lesbian-love fans” came through for her? Well, the suit sure helps.
And speaking of lesbian-love, I sense a future 'ship in the form of Eliza's Echo and Amy Acker's Dr. Claire Saunders. I can't be the only one who caught a little chemistry when Claire asked Echo if she was ready for her massage.
Claire is also one of the show's more interesting characters. As the doctor who takes care of the dolls, or “actives,” she seems to be struggling with the moral issues surrounding the operation. Also, the origins of her scars have yet to be revealed.
Also still secretive are more specifics about the Dollhouse. What we know is that the organization enlists people to become actives who have their identities erased. They then are programmed (down to memories, physical ability, mental capacity) to become whatever a client wants. After each “engagement” their memories are erased again and it starts over.
The pilot had to cover a lot of ground, so it felt very full while also leaving many questions unanswered. Like, why do they have to imprint the actives with actual people's memories, complete with their flaws? I mean, if you've developed the technology this far, wouldn't you be able to make them perfect? Also, I missed Joss' signature wit. I know the show and its central topics — identity, brainwashing, perversion — are serious, but I find well-placed humor often enhances the drama.
Still, I'm going to keep watching. I trust Joss, I like Eliza. And if they keep putting her in tight-fitting tank tops each episode, well, like I said, how bad can it be?
So, what do you think so far? Are you sold? Are you skeptical? Discuss. Submitted by on February 16, 2009 - 9:00am. |

I'm a little wary but interested
I'm sold.
so happy that I'm not the
I'll be watching every week
And not just for Eliza Dushku, though that's definitley part of it, but because it looks like it is going to be an awesome show. I love the concept for the show, that would be such a creepy way to live. I like how they give them flaws, as he said you have to have a balance. It keeps them from becoming superhuman, they remain more relatable. They can do alot with the concept to keep it from getting boring and repetitive, so it has a good chance of sticking around for a while.

Alias 2.0
The show was very Alias meets My Own Worst Enemy. Since I loved both of those shows, it's no surprise that I really liked Dollhouse.
The only part I didn't really get (or care for) was the former "active" that's investigating the case he's not supposed to. It was confusing and I didn't like the guy playing him, but it's way too early to make a definitive judgment call.
As of right now, I'll keep tuning in.
I'm beyond sold
I enjoyed the show and will
I enjoyed the show and will keep watching. My only problem was that I wasn't too keen on the plot of the episode. The actual episode was good and I do get the whole 'kidnapped girl / erasing memory" metaphore thingy but I just didn't think it was good enough *pilot episode*. Maybe I would have liked if this were the 2nd or 3rd episode and the pilot had more of a 'pilot' feel to it? Hmm..not sure.
But overall it was that solid good Whedon quality and I liked it.
Seems interesting
I found it cliched
I understand what a pilot has to accomplish for the clueless, feckless TV executives, but it had nothing of Joss in it.
The opening scene was a tired excuse for action that was unconnected to the rest of the story. While it showed that not every "mission" of an active is to bring someone to justice (or the like), it felt like just what it was: exposition.
That the first episode so neatly wrapped up the kidnapping AND brought closure to the personality that Echo was wearing just felt hollow.
I suppose my personal bias against episodic television is playing a large part in this. I prefer shows like Damages that have more freedom than any show on network television (except for Lost, but that show is a once in a decade lightning strike).
It was the first show, and I'll keep watching as long as I can start to feel Joss' presence, wit and well-drawn characters. The pilot just reeked of too much explaining.
uh huh
i'll keep watching as long as eliza's getting screen time :)
also, there was defnite sparkage between echo and the doctor
Skeptical at best
Maybe because it's the first episode, so I'll keep watching. But unless I see some sort of improvement, my approval will be short-lived.
On the brightside...Eliza was gorgeous. And the new active? Wow.
Grrr.... argh
SOLD!
Claire/Echo
There's actually already a fic for the pairing : http://fembuck.livejournal.com/225597.html#cutid1
It's not pouring in just yet, but seeing as it's only three days after the debut, I think there's a lot more on the way.
I liked it!
I really enjoyed it. I think piolets are always a little different to the rest of the series, sometimes better, sometimes worse.
Obviously, with Dollhouse, there's a lot of canon and rules that need to be created, it's gonna be a little slow - that said, they still managed to tell a good story.
I hope Joss' wit will feature more, but we didn't get to know about any of the other characters much either, so it will come with time.
For the first 15 mins, all I could think was that it was a Buffy spin-off, and that Faith had become Echo.
I agree there did seem to be chemistry between Echo and the Doc. Look forwad to reading/writing fan-fic for that!
the three posts above me
DOLLHOUSE PILOT
Pilot
I thought it was good,
I thought it was good, didn't reach the heights of Buffy yet, but it was only the first episode!
However, I DID notice the chemistry between Amy and Eliza. That was my favorite part.
Go here for my view on all things lesbian: http://allthingslesbeau.blogspot.com
I thought it was pure boring!
Will give it another shot tho cause it is Eliza Dushku after all. And Joss Whedon of course.
But wow it was boring! Might have been a bit more interesting if it was slightly more ensemble and slightly less Eliza wondering about in vests and/or suits. Hmmmm.
um...I'm on the edge...
I kinda like the story... but seriously I am so confussed 1/2 of the time!!!
but...when Echo and Claire Saunders came on... i was like...oh oh oh.. really?! they gonna show that on the pliot?!.. of course.. they did.. ><
Um...
Like Snarker, I trust Joss and like Eliza, so I'm willing to stay on board for a while, but I was let down, for sure.
The writing wasn't sharp at all. There were some PAINFUL lines delivered badly. Nothing at the end to hook me into coming back for the next ep (if I wasn't a Joss fanatic...) and I don't give a crap about any of the characters yet, which is key in Joss' stuff. I relate to someone right away. Not in this.
If the "actives" get wiped "clean" every week, how/will we care about them? And if Echo starts to pick up on what's happening to her and therein lies the care for the character and plot intrigue, they better get to that sooner than later or no one will care/tune-in.
It was great to see Amy and Eliza together, but I couldn't stop thinking Faith/Fred. Not that that's a bad thing, but distracting to say the least.
Ugh. I mean I know it's hard to get past my "Buffy is the great thing ever and nothing can top it" take on life, but this fell way short of bare Joss minimum. I actually watched a few random BTVS eps right after and was shocked at just how not good Dollhouse was (first eps of Buffy and FIrefly were way better).
I'm in. For a few more eps. but ONLY because, as my tshirt reads: Joss Whedon is my master now.
I watched the pilot
I watched the pilot and I had to fight (literally) my brothers to watch it. Ok it wasn't a real fight just some wrestling for the remote and maybe some kicking of certain persons off the couch. It wasn't bad for the first episode of course it's going to be rocky since we're just introduced to the characters and the whole operation, but that's why I'm going to watch it again to see what else happens. I really want to know how "Echo" got into that situation in the first place they gave just a little snapshot of it in the begining, but of course didn't say what had transpired. It was a little odd to see her when she's had her memory wiped because her character was kind of an airhead (I mean the she hurts thing) she doesn't play those kinds of parts, in everything I've seen her in, she has a brain and is tough in one way or another. I guess as long as I get to see her kick some major butt while wearing those outfits I can overlook that lol
But of course
I promised myself I would keep an open mind when watching Dollhouse and I'm glad I did! The show was surprisingly entertaining and I look forward to future episodes.
"You either want them or you don't! Taking longer to decided is not going to make a difference!"
I have been anxiously
I liked it
I thought it was pretty good. I found it to be a little confusing at times, but I think it'll keep getting better. I have faith in Joss Whedon. I'm looking forward to seeing how this show progresses :)

Dude, was that Gwen Post?
We're here, We're queer, Now step off bitch!
Give it time
I'm definitely going to keep watching. The show has a lot of potential. As I spent the weekend thinking about the concept of Dollhouse, a million utterly fascinating questions came pouring into my mind. It's going to be a while before they run out of ideas.
The show is in Joss's capable hands and I recognized many a Buffy/Angel/Firefly creative team name in the opening credits. Also, keep in mind that pilots are not Joss's strong point. As brill as Buffy was, the first few episodes were kind of meh. However, all pilots pretty much suck, so it's not a just a Joss thing. Give Dollhouse a few episodes to hit its stride. I think we're in for some very interesting television.
Yeah like any new show it
Yeah like any new show it will need a few episodes to find its feet.
But come on, how could I not watch a show where Amy Acker offers Eliza Dushku massages? I'm only human!
I'm a little skeptical about how it will play out - the whole "Engagement of the Week" formula will get old really quickly (say, mid-season, tops) and breaking away from that kinda undermines the whole premise of the show.
But, if there's one writer I expect to surpsise me (in a good way) it's Joss Whedon.
I really enjoyed Dollhouse.
A Very Scary Show
hmmm
hmmm, I don't think I see how it was sexist. There are male and female actives and the boss is a woman. I do think the concept is creepy, but also intriguing.
"Life... is like a grapefruit. It's orange and squishy, and has a few pips in it, and some folks have half a one for breakfast." Douglas Adams
not ready to play
Yes, yes, yes!
Interesting
Awesome...
I really liked it, and will absolutely be tuning in again. I agree that it was missing some essential 'jossy-ness', but i refuse to make a judgement based on a single episode. I didn't have any problems figuring out what was going on.. i think a little mystery is a good thing.
I'm dying to know what happened to Fred (will i ever call her anything else?). I think she was a 'test subject'.. one of the early 'Dolls' maybe? Also, the doctor dude (name??) reminds me of a cross between Warren and Knox. Evil Genius Alert!
I've missed joss, and would probably watch a show of Eliza reading a phonebook.:)
Ggrr, aarrgh, WIN!
Flaws
I thought they said that if you don't have the flaws, you can't be the same. Sort of how you can't know dark without light. Her character on this would not have cared about the kid, maybe, if she hadn't remembered being abducted herself.
I TOTALLY saw the subtext with "Fred" - yet somehow totally MISSED those scars! Yikes!
Glad to hear the ratings were okay!
Sold.
Whedon is a brilliant writer and the content appeals to my inner sociologist.
A billionaire control freak? Other billionaires that can request a woman for almost ANY service? A human that acts human, but isn't really? Or is she? ohgodohgodohgod! I'm excited
it was ok
Its creepy, and human trafficking is a turnoff but I love Eliza she’ll always be faith to me so the show has my support. seeing Fred was cool. the chemisty was there, U could tell they worked together before.
I like the premise
Amy Acker + face scars = GOLD
Is it wrong that I find Amy Acker to be so freaking beautiful *especially* when she's all angsty and wounded? I don't think so.
As for the chemistry between their characters, I was definitely there. I was watching it with a mixture of straight and gay friends and as soon as Echo lightly touched her face, those few of us in the group were like "AH! GAY!" Everyone else sighed and rolled their eyes. But what can I say? I'm a subtexter, it's how I roll. ;)
I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Joss!

I've found my new ship and I can't wait to set sail!
C'mon Joss! Give us some Echo/Claire!
Love it!
"I can't be the only one who caught a little chemistry when Claire asked Echo if she was ready for her massage."
No, no you were not Ms Snarker...lol...when we come into their scene together and Claire is
feeling upexamining Echo's leg...i pressed paused and sent up a little thankyoujossthankyoujoss...lol...Can't wait for next week!
I found the show to be
I found the show to be alright for a pilot episode, but that's about it. There was only one part that made me chuckle like only Joss Whedon can, and now, a few days later, I can't even remember what that was. I also found it to be incredibly formulaic. Like House, but without the funny doctor that keeps it interesting.
That being said, I don't usually like pilots anyway. I hope Joss puts more of his own personality into it (because I can't imagine him being THAT predictable and somber). Amy Acker did a great job keeping me interested in her short screen time. What I really appreciated about her performance was that she is in no way, shape or form like Fred. I've only seen her on Angel so I didn't know what to expect! I think there's a lot of potential for some great Joss Whedon villian wit from the head exec as well.
And HELLOOOOO Eliza Dushku. How I've missed you!
meh
in the middle
I'm not ready to say I loved it just yet but I think it's a distinct possibility. The premise is cool and, well, it's Joss! I trust him to come through with what we all love about his work.
So much potential!!
I loved the opener. I like the concept of the show and the many questions this opener gave us.
It was strong acting from Eliza, playing four different roles in this first episodes; and playing them good!
Of course seeing Eliza with glasses was a plus, and you can't forget the suite.
The short scene with Amy Acker was totally made of win.
I'm really looking forward to the next episodes and see where Joss and Eliza will lead us. There's a lot of potential and I hope they can keep the pace up!
<3
I loved it. I know it wasnt perfect but that just shows what we've come to expect of Joss Whedon and im so glad he's got a show on TV again. After all the pressure thats been put on the show to be marketable, i think it's only going to get better. Once this show gets the viewers (and i hope it does) the TV exec's will stop breathing down Joss's neck and that's when we'll see the real fireworks ;)
I liked it. Not as witty or
I have to say...
