News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Now that the "Dollhouse" had debuted, are you ready to play?

Well, that was interesting. The premiere of Dollhouse on Friday was both ambitious and intriguing. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because advance reviews had been middling at best. But while I can't say I love Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku's return to television just yet, I will definitely keep watching. I've also noticed that Eliza doesn't wear a lot of clothing in it, so — um — how bad can it be?

The high-tech human trafficking drama debuted Friday night to decent numbers. With an audience of 4.7 million it actually beat its returning lead-in, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles by 1 million viewers. It also held onto almost everyone through its second half an hour and doubled its female viewership. Could it be that Eliza's “lesbian-love fans” came through for her? Well, the suit sure helps.

And speaking of lesbian-love, I sense a future 'ship in the form of Eliza's Echo and Amy Acker's Dr. Claire Saunders. I can't be the only one who caught a little chemistry when Claire asked Echo if she was ready for her massage.

Claire is also one of the show's more interesting characters. As the doctor who takes care of the dolls, or “actives,” she seems to be struggling with the moral issues surrounding the operation. Also, the origins of her scars have yet to be revealed.

Also still secretive are more specifics about the Dollhouse. What we know is that the organization enlists people to become actives who have their identities erased. They then are programmed (down to memories, physical ability, mental capacity) to become whatever a client wants. After each “engagement” their memories are erased again and it starts over.

The pilot had to cover a lot of ground, so it felt very full while also leaving many questions unanswered. Like, why do they have to imprint the actives with actual people's memories, complete with their flaws? I mean, if you've developed the technology this far, wouldn't you be able to make them perfect? Also, I missed Joss' signature wit. I know the show and its central topics — identity, brainwashing, perversion — are serious, but I find well-placed humor often enhances the drama.

Still, I'm going to keep watching. I trust Joss, I like Eliza. And if they keep putting her in tight-fitting tank tops each episode, well, like I said, how bad can it be?

So, what do you think so far? Are you sold? Are you skeptical? Discuss.

I'm a little wary but interested

There was something missing, but I couldn't tell what.  I think things well get more intriguing as we see some more of the actives.

I'm sold.

Joss Whedon doesn't have to try hard to win me over.  I'd watch it just for the Grr Argh! at the end.

I'll be watching every week

And not just for Eliza Dushku, though that's definitley part of it, but because it looks like it is going to be an awesome show. I love the concept for the show, that would be such a creepy way to live. I like how they give them flaws, as he said you have to have a balance. It keeps them from becoming superhuman, they remain more relatable. They can do alot with the concept to keep it from getting boring and repetitive, so it has a good chance of sticking around for a while.

Alias 2.0

The show was very Alias meets My Own Worst Enemy. Since I loved both of those shows, it's no surprise that I really liked Dollhouse.

The only part I didn't really get (or care for) was the former "active" that's investigating the case he's not supposed to. It was confusing and I didn't like the guy playing him, but it's way too early to make a definitive judgment call.

As of right now, I'll keep tuning in.

Alice Cullen's wife's picture

I'm beyond sold

It could have been the worst show ever made and I'd still tune in (Thank God it wasn't)... I was actually filled with a child- like glee when Amy Acker and Eliza Dushku had that scene togther, I was like "awww Fred and Faith are back" I din't even pay attention and then I was like "did she just say massage?" ohhh

I enjoyed the show and will

I enjoyed the show and will keep watching. My only problem was that I wasn't too keen on the plot of the episode. The actual episode was good and I do get the whole 'kidnapped girl / erasing memory" metaphore thingy but I just didn't think it was good enough *pilot episode*. Maybe I would have liked if this were the 2nd or 3rd episode and the pilot had more of a 'pilot' feel to it? Hmm..not sure.

But overall it was that solid good Whedon quality and I liked it.

Sarah Jane's picture

Seems interesting

Some scenes I was reminded of Alias and some scenes reminded me of La Femme Nikita the TV series.  Yeah, there are some parts to the plot that don't add up yet.
Penny Winterr's picture

I found it cliched

I understand what a pilot has to accomplish for the clueless, feckless TV executives, but it had nothing of Joss in it.

The opening scene was a tired excuse for action that was unconnected to the rest of the story.  While it showed that not every "mission" of an active is to bring someone to justice (or the like), it felt like just what it was: exposition.

That the first episode so neatly wrapped up the kidnapping AND brought closure to the personality that Echo was wearing just felt hollow.

I suppose my personal bias against episodic television is playing a large part in this.  I prefer shows like Damages that have more freedom than any show on network television (except for Lost, but that show is a once in a decade lightning strike).

It was the first show, and I'll keep watching as long as I can start to feel Joss' presence, wit and well-drawn characters.  The pilot just reeked of too much explaining.

dazed's picture

uh huh

i'll keep watching as long as eliza's getting screen time :)

also, there was defnite sparkage between echo and the doctor

awesome_possum's picture

Skeptical at best

Throughout the entire episode, I was left with thoughts of "Wait, what?" to the point where I went on Fox's website the following day to rewatch it. And that did nothing to clarify the many questions I have.
Maybe because it's the first episode, so I'll keep watching. But unless I see some sort of improvement, my approval will be short-lived.

On the brightside...Eliza was gorgeous. And the new active? Wow.
darthrosenburg's picture

Grrr.... argh

As with all of Joss' shows, I enjoyed the pilot, but not as much as I know I'll enjoy the rest of the series. Pilots always introduce questions. They don't answer them. I can't wait to learn more and to add more questions to the list. I don't really care for many of the characters yet, but I'm sure that will change as we learn more about them. The only characters I liked right away were Echo and Claire, for obvious reasons, and Topher, because he's just cool. As much as I liked the show, the end was my favorite part. When the Mutant Enemy monster went by the screen with his signature grr.. argh, I actually squeed.

SOLD!

Can't wait for the Claire/Echo fan fic to start pouring in :D that was some really nice subtext there or maybe it's just Eliza Dushku, she seems so gay friendly, she's got chemistry with everyone, boys and girls. But seriously, great cast, interesting premise with good potential. I trust Joss Whedon enough to give it a proper go. It usually takes a few episodes to get really hooked.. it was like that with Firefly and and Buffy, but honestly I'm kind of sold already.
Lucas's picture

Claire/Echo

There's actually already a fic for the pairing : http://fembuck.livejournal.com/225597.html#cutid1

It's not pouring in just yet, but seeing as it's only three days after the debut, I think there's a lot more on the way.

Punk_Rock_Princess's picture

I liked it!

I really enjoyed it. I think piolets are always a little different to the rest of the series, sometimes better, sometimes worse.
Obviously, with Dollhouse, there's a lot of canon and rules that need to be created, it's gonna be a little slow - that said, they still managed to tell a good story.
I hope Joss' wit will feature more, but we didn't get to know about any of the other characters much either, so it will come with time.

For the first 15 mins, all I could think was that it was a Buffy spin-off, and that Faith had become Echo.
I agree there did seem to be chemistry between Echo and the Doc. Look forwad to reading/writing fan-fic for that!

baubo's picture

the three posts above me

pretty much summarize everything i thought about the pilot -- especially the "here's Faith now let's see her become Echo."  and yes, i'm one of those fans who came to the Whedonverse late and fell hard and never left, but i've noticed i never love one of Joss's shows from the get-go.  i watch it and like it and keep watching and then about 6 or 7 episodes in i realize i'm looking forward to seeing the next episode more than i can admit to the general public.  and i think Dollhouse has all the potential to make me love it with the love that dare not speak its name.

DOLLHOUSE PILOT

I loved the pilot!  My dream would be that Laurel Holloman  joins the cast to reprise her role as Justine in ANGEL.
Lucas's picture

Pilot

The episode was okay, it didn't captivate or amaze me as much as I thought it would've. I am going to stick aroung, though, because I really like the premise and am hoping that the farther along we get the more interesting it'll be.

I thought it was good,

I thought it was good, didn't reach the heights of Buffy yet, but it was only the first episode!

However, I DID notice the chemistry between Amy and Eliza. That was my favorite part.

I thought it was pure boring!

Will give it another shot tho cause it is Eliza Dushku after all.  And Joss Whedon of course.

But wow it was boring!  Might have been a bit more interesting if it was slightly more ensemble and slightly less Eliza wondering about in vests and/or suits.  Hmmmm.

sibo's picture

um...I'm on the edge...

I kinda like the story... but seriously I am so confussed 1/2 of the time!!!

but...when Echo and Claire Saunders came on... i was like...oh oh oh..  really?! they gonna show that on the pliot?!.. of course.. they did.. ><

InXanadu's picture

Um...

Like Snarker, I trust Joss and like Eliza, so I'm willing to stay on board for a while, but I was let down, for sure.

The writing wasn't sharp at all. There were some PAINFUL lines delivered badly. Nothing at the end to hook me into coming back for the next ep (if I wasn't a Joss fanatic...) and I don't give a crap about any of the characters yet, which is key in Joss' stuff. I relate to someone right away. Not in this.

If the "actives" get wiped "clean" every week, how/will we care about them? And if Echo starts to pick up on what's happening to her and therein lies the care for the character and plot intrigue, they better get to that sooner than later or no one will care/tune-in.

It was great to see Amy and Eliza together, but I couldn't stop thinking Faith/Fred. Not that that's a bad thing, but distracting to say the least.

Ugh. I mean I know it's hard to get past my "Buffy is the great thing ever and nothing can top it" take on life, but this fell way short of bare Joss minimum. I actually watched a few random BTVS eps right after and was shocked at just how not good Dollhouse was (first eps of Buffy and FIrefly were way better).

I'm in. For a few more eps. but ONLY because, as my tshirt reads: Joss Whedon is my master now.

Elisabeth's picture

I watched the pilot

I watched the pilot and I had to fight (literally) my brothers to watch it. Ok it wasn't a real fight just some wrestling for the remote and maybe some kicking of certain persons off the couch. It wasn't bad for the first episode of course it's going to be rocky since we're just introduced to the characters and the whole operation, but that's why I'm going to watch it again to see what else happens. I really want to know how "Echo" got into that situation in the first place they gave just a little snapshot of it in the begining, but of course didn't say what had transpired. It was a little odd to see her when she's had her memory wiped because her character was kind of an airhead (I mean the she hurts thing) she doesn't play those kinds of parts, in everything I've seen her in, she has a brain and is tough in one way or another. I guess as long as I get to see her kick some major butt while wearing those outfits I can overlook that lol

SubtextRules's picture

But of course

I promised myself I would keep an open mind when watching Dollhouse and I'm glad I did! The show was surprisingly entertaining and I look forward to future episodes.

I have been anxiously

I have been anxiously waiting for this show ever since I first read Joss and Eliza were going to do another show together. When I read that Amy Acker was joining the cast I actually squealed. I was not let down Friday night. Joss's shows always start off a little slow, but I thought this was his best pilot yet out of the four, even though this wasn't technically the pilot, it was episode 2. Thanks Fox for always showing Whedon's shows out of order. I was very intrigued as to the many mysteries of this show and I think my love for this show will grow with every episode. I love seeing Amy Acker and Eliza Dushku back in television. Here's hoping Fox doesn't cancel this show long before its time.

I liked it

I thought it was pretty good. I found it to be a little confusing at times, but I think it'll keep getting better. I have faith in Joss Whedon. I'm looking forward to seeing how this show progresses :)

Give it time

Dr. Amy, as I call her, is probably the most interesting character.  I always liked Amy as Fred and knew she was a great actor, but I didn't count on her being able to deliver such a layered performance while being on screen all of 4 minutes.  Wow.

I'm definitely going to keep watching.  The show has a lot of potential.  As I spent the weekend thinking about the concept of Dollhouse, a million utterly fascinating questions came pouring into my mind.  It's going to be a while before they run out of ideas.

The show is in Joss's capable hands and I recognized many a Buffy/Angel/Firefly creative team name in the opening credits.  Also, keep in mind that pilots are not Joss's strong point.  As brill as Buffy was, the first few episodes were kind of meh.  However, all pilots pretty much suck, so it's not a just a Joss thing.  Give Dollhouse a few episodes to hit its stride.  I think we're in for some very interesting television.
glwtta's picture

Yeah like any new show it

Yeah like any new show it will need a few episodes to find its feet.

But come on, how could I not watch a show where Amy Acker offers Eliza Dushku massages? I'm only human!

I'm a little skeptical about how it will play out - the whole "Engagement of the Week" formula will get old really quickly (say, mid-season, tops) and breaking away from that kinda undermines the whole premise of the show.

But, if there's one writer I expect to surpsise me (in a good way) it's Joss Whedon.

A Very Scary Show

I love Eliza and I was a big Buffy fan, but after watching the show, I was really turned off. A group of (mostly) men erasing the memories of female actives and implanting whichever personalities they want? It's a very disturbing--and sexist--concept. I like my women with free will and minds of their own.
Angie 's picture

hmmm

hmmm, I don't think I see how it was sexist. There are male and female actives and the boss is a woman. I do think the concept is creepy, but also intriguing.

i watched it for an hour and still didnt know what was going on. i need more of a reason than a hot girl to watch a show.
Triscut's picture

Yes, yes, yes!

Well, it looks like my Friday nights are booked for a while. I loved the show. I loved the motorcycle bit, I loved the questionable morality, I loved Eliza's white dress, I loved the glasses, I loved the bit imprinted from the others. The only thing I didn't like was the adverts! Basically, I'm hooked. Oh, and the pairing with Terminator was also brilliant!
akiraj's picture

Interesting

It looks very interesting and I definitely will be tuning in but is it weird that I've never heard of Eliza until this show?????
Mar's picture

Awesome...

I really liked it, and will absolutely be tuning in again. I agree that it was missing some essential 'jossy-ness', but i refuse to make a judgement based on a single episode. I didn't have any problems figuring out what was going on.. i think a little mystery is a good thing.

I'm dying to know what happened to Fred (will i ever call her anything else?). I think she was a 'test subject'.. one of the early 'Dolls' maybe? Also, the doctor dude (name??) reminds me of a cross between Warren and Knox. Evil Genius Alert!

I've missed joss, and would probably watch a show of Eliza reading a phonebook.:)

Ggrr, aarrgh, WIN!

Flaws

I thought they said that if you don't have the flaws, you can't be the same.  Sort of how you can't know dark without light.  Her character on this would not have cared about the kid, maybe, if she hadn't remembered being abducted herself.

I TOTALLY saw the subtext with "Fred" - yet somehow totally MISSED those scars!  Yikes!

Glad to hear the ratings were okay!

Sold.

Whedon is a brilliant writer and the content appeals to my inner sociologist.

A billionaire control freak? Other billionaires that can request a woman for almost ANY service? A human that acts human, but isn't really? Or is she? ohgodohgodohgod! I'm excited

it was ok

Its creepy, and human trafficking is a turnoff but I love Eliza she’ll always be faith to me so the show has my support. seeing Fred was cool. the chemisty was there, U could tell they worked together before.

I like the premise, but I don't think that Eliza Dushku is strong enough to carry the show.

Amy Acker + face scars = GOLD

Is it wrong that I find Amy Acker to be so freaking beautiful *especially* when she's all angsty and wounded? I don't think so.

As for the chemistry between their characters, I was definitely there.  I was watching it with a mixture of straight and gay friends and as soon as Echo lightly touched her face, those few of us in the group were like "AH! GAY!" Everyone else sighed and rolled their eyes.  But what can I say? I'm a subtexter, it's how I roll. ;)

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Joss!

I found the show to be

I found the show to be alright for a pilot episode, but that's about it. There was only one part that made me chuckle like only Joss Whedon can, and now, a few days later, I can't even remember what that was. I also found it to be incredibly formulaic. Like House, but without the funny doctor that keeps it interesting.

That being said, I don't usually like pilots anyway. I hope Joss puts more of his own personality into it (because I can't imagine him being THAT predictable and somber). Amy Acker did a great job keeping me interested in her short screen time. What I really appreciated about her performance was that she is in no way, shape or form like Fred. I've only seen her on Angel so I didn't know what to expect! I think there's a lot of potential for some great Joss Whedon villian wit from the head exec as well.

And HELLOOOOO Eliza Dushku. How I've missed you!

Kiseki's picture

meh

It's no "Buffy." I actually don't like it much, but I like seeing Eliza is any degree of dress or undress. So I guess I'll be shallow for a moment and keep watching!

So much potential!!

I loved the opener. I like the concept of the show and the many questions this opener gave us.

It was strong acting from Eliza, playing four different roles in this first episodes; and playing them good!

Of course seeing Eliza with glasses was a plus, and you can't forget the suite.

The short scene with Amy Acker was totally made of win.

I'm really looking forward to the next episodes and see where Joss and Eliza will lead us. There's a lot of potential and I hope they can keep the pace up!

I loved it. I know it wasnt perfect but that just shows what we've come to expect of Joss Whedon and im so glad he's got a show on TV again. After all the pressure thats been put on the show to be marketable, i think it's only going to get better. Once this show gets the viewers (and i hope it does) the TV exec's will stop breathing down Joss's neck and that's when we'll see the real fireworks ;)

I have to say...

Even though i watched the episode a little late, i was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the first episode. Props to Eliza for her great acting, it will be interesting to watch her deal with all the personalities of the characters she'll be playing. She's a mighty gorgeous and talented women :D.
