Nicole Kidman invites you to explore "Australia"Epic. Sweeping. Romantic. Such bold declarative descriptions only seem right when you name your film after an entire continent. And, after watching the trailer for the new Baz Luhrmann drama Australia, they seem only fitting. The director’s long-awaited follow-up to Moulin Rouge stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in an epic, sweeping, romantic drama set in – where else – Australia at the brink of World War II.
With names like Luhrmann, Kidman and Jackman (hey, man, I detect a theme!) attached, the expectations are obviously high. As some of Australia’s highest profile international stars, the trio is no doubt anxious to paint a different picture of the land down under than just a place where women glow and men plunder. So, take a look. (To see it in high-definition, click here.) Now, I hate to say this given the talent involved, but the first thing I noticed was the wonderful art deco font used for the title cards. The old-fashioned newsreel feel is fantastic and sets the tone instantly. I had to resist the urge to scour font sites immediately to find and download the typeface. But enough about my unrequited graphic design crush. How about the movie?
The trailer lays out the broad brush strokes of the story. And, when I say broad, I mean broad. Nicole’s character attempts to explain the plot by way of a bedtime story. But all she tells us is that there is a girl, a magic man, a storm and a faraway land called Oz. Wait, I’ve seen this film. Are they off to see the Wonderful Wizard? In which case, where is the Yellow Brick Road?
But instead of munchkins and wicked witches, we see cotton-candy skies, horses, cattle, fires, bombers, kissing and an aboriginal fellow painted in mud. The film follows an English aristocrat (the “girl,” played by Nicole) and an Aussie cattle drover (the “magic man,” played by Hugh) who join forced to help save the land she inherits. Their journey is set against the backdrop of the Japanese bombing of the city of Darwin.
As stylishly tantalizing as the trailer is, it’s hard to tell if the film will deliver on the Oscar bait it promises. The movie definitely looks gorgeous. But it also looks vaguely like a mash-up between Far and Away, The English Patient and Pearl Harbor. What I do know is that Nicole could use a hit: The Oscar-winning star has had a string of flops from The Stepford Wives to Bewitched,The Invasion and The Golden Compass.
But, at least her upper-crust role in Australia plays to her strength. Nicole porcelain perfection can come off as imperious or even icy (and that’s not even taking in account her strangely frozen visage of late). Hugh, in the meantime, is seriously working his inner Clint Eastwood.
So, what do you think? Are you ready to visit Australia? Submitted by on June 4, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

The "Atonement" of this Year?
Henry V?
Not a rip off
The trailer looks good
What happened to the once
What happened to the once amazingly beautiful Nicole? Man, its been too long and I can't help but continue to love her now, but I wish she hadn't messed her face up!!
As for the film, trailer in't much to go on, but it looks fairly epic! I, however, was already in line to see it when I first heard 'Kidman, Jackman, Luhrmann', so I'll be there!!
I love Nicole Kidman
Oh, Nicole...
Agreeing with speaker above (Vic) that she (Nicole) really messed her face up. I feel sick; I have made my statements against that kind of physical changes (if not, of course, it it other grounds than for spoiled beaties ;) - I cannot stand to se my yesterday idol like this. Changed. She really looks changed with that small, tiny face change! It looks ridicioulosly awful, and not only by beauty but by thoughts of how it can affect millions of young women in our world, changing, defecting them selves with unnatural ways when they look beautiful the way they are... =)
I just feel disappointed, but, she's a star, and that's what stars do, change and get people disappointed, because we agree to look up to them as idols. maybe we shouldn't.
Oh, god, night talk! but i really got disappointed at my beloved Nicole, she didn't have to do that, she was perfect.
Don't know if I want to see this movie, last years golden compass was barely watchable for me. i will try to get used, but i don't approve of surgery, in that kind ;)
Love. (i'm not angry; just tired, it's two in the morning.)
the great oz
Yay Stralia well sorta!
G'day
I'd like too see the film as an Aussie coz we have a beautifuly ugly country. But i agree that the trailer looked like a mash of many other films. But i will hopefully be plesantly surprised. I like nicole but i wonder if she ever gets tired of the breathless lady part i always see her play. oh well they have my 11 dollars at the flicks!
Aussies for Australia..
My love of this incredible
My love of this incredible country and my belief in Baz's unparalleled sense of aesthetic mean that this movie will be epic to me, even if only for the cinematography.
I'm afraid, despite Nicole's new plastic fantastic look, she was the obvious casting choice. I could have seen Cate Blanchett doing a better job though.
Most importantly, hopefully the world will get a taste of why us Aussie's are so proud of our land.
Did I just missed something?
Did I missed something, or was it Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge?
And Hugh Jackman might be knowing from Kate and Leopold (with Meg Ryan). Bit confused rigth now.
Back to the movie: Seems quite nice. Waiting forward to watch it!
Hmmm ....
Two main reasons i wish to watch this one, numero uno Baz is a brilliant director and i like his style, and two i am curious to see how they shall represent OZ ... not been to visit yet but fingers crossed i may go down under next year. Curious to see what my mates down there shall think of this. Glad to see the Aussies supporting it for the moment though ...
But seriuosly what is up with Nicole ... i am tempted to say i actually fancy Hugh more. I am trying to think other than Cate Blancet who would replace her ... oh what about Naomi Watts?
I'm so scared...
..that this movie will be a flop...I want it to be fantastic sooooo bad...I think i really have my hopes up way to high. I guess we'll find out soon enough though.

Sarah Warn - "she's not unattractive according to conventional standards of femininity, which is Women's studies speak for...she's hot".
I'm going to watch it because ...
I'm going to watch this film because I like to support the Australian film industry. I've seen relatively few shockers and have loved and enjoyed watching the majority of Australian films.
I'm not a big Nicole fan. I loved her in her earlier work, especially Dead Calm, but I can't say I've enjoyed much of what is credited to her international fame.
I'm intensely interested in seeing if true factual and historical aspects of the bombing/invasion will be reflected in this film. For example, if it was not for the surrounding Aboriginal island communities and civilians, Darwin would have been lost and the Japanese would have had an even more solid and strategic foothold in the South Pacific. What about the action of the armed forces posted in Darwin during the war? Well ... to our national shame they turned tail and ran. They were basically bureaucrats who had landed what they thought was a 'safe' posting, rather than being shipped overseas as canon fodder.
Also I'm a Darwin girl, where some of the filming occurred. I look forward to seeing my home turf in a period setting and seeing if I can divorce myself from fact over fiction. Don't get me started on Crocodile Dundee.
Regarding an above post. It may remind you of Pearl Harbour because the attack there that was the catalyst in bringing America into WW2, was the attack approach by the Japanese on Darwin Australia and also Singapore.
If you are interested in watching an excellent movie that basically launched Cate Blanchett’s international career, make the time to view ‘Paradise Road’ 1997. It also stars Glenn Close and another favourite actress of mine – Frances McDormand. You will easily see why Cate came to attention because she out shone Glenn and that’s saying a lot considering that she was not even billed. I can’t believe, but not surprised over what Cate has achieved in 10 years.
From imdb.com:
“Fact-based recounting of a group of women who are imprisoned on the island of Sumatra by the Japanese during World War II and used music as a relief to their misery.”
It is truly an exceptional and internationally represented film. The women POWs came from all levels of society - made up of captured Australian nurses, rich colonial women – a mix of Dutch, British, American and Australians, as well as Lutheran nuns, Chinese, Malaysian and Sumatran women. It is absolutely one of my all time favourites.
If you ever have the hots for a nun, not that i would ... Johanna Ter Steege brings it.
Enough gushing about it :) If you want to know more, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Road
Baz Lurhmann can do no wrong
...and that is why I'm convinced that this movie will be fantastic. Ever since I saw Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet (and about fifty times since the first viewings) I have believed that Baz Luhrmann is one of the most gifted filmmakers of the modern age.
I saw this preview the other day and I was swept away by it. It may also help that I was recently (like last month) in Australia for the first time and so I feel I can at least connect with the country a bit more now.
Anyway...I will be seeing this on opening day if I can.

I'll see anything...
The Golden Compass
WOW..I am shocked at all
WOW..I am shocked at all the disappointment. I could not stop watching this trailer..I know the music has something to do with it as I LOVE that score. I do like the little added dramatic thunder they added to it.
I saw this trailer in the theater before Indiana Jones and I INSTANTLY wanted to watch this movie instead. I agree the Nichole featured in the beginning of the trailer has the porcelain doll look she seems to sport everywhere. But the shots from the rest film..she has a wonderful golden glow. She looks stunning in the ballroom shot.
I love Hugh Jackman. The man is highly underrated as is Baz! Brilliant director and has not shown me a bad movie(even though I am not a big fan or Romeo and Juliet, it is still beautifully done)
I am also fascinated with WWII(and the land down under) and to see a story about something I have never seen before has me intrigued. Also..if this movie is as good as the teaser looked..if it doesn't have a major flaw..I peg it for a Best Picture nom if not win.
*goes to watch the teaser again*
I love Hugh Jackman! After
I love Hugh Jackman! After X Men I am officially in love with him. (Yes, I'm bi)
Even if I struggle with Nicole's facial changes, I might go to watch this movie when it comes to us (Schweden) - all because of my (struggling) love to Kidman and never ending to Jackman. (A lot of 'men' here, grr). Cheers!:D
