News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron paint a transsexual lesbian love story

Imagine a movie starring two Oscar-winning actresses. Imagine that they play a couple. Imagine that one of the women portrays the world's first post-op male-to-female transsexual. Finally, imagine that this is all based on a true story. Now, stop imagining, because it's actually happening.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron have signed on to the independent film The Danish Girl, based on the novel about real-life early 20th century Danish artists Einar and Gerda Wegener. Einar (played by Nicole) often dressed as a woman to model for wife Gerda (played by Charlize), and in 1930, became the first person to successfully undergo gender reassignment surgery to become Lili Elbe.

Wow, where to start? In a country where several states just voted overwhelmingly to ban same-sex marriage, this is the first bit of good gay news we've heard in a while. And not just good but awesome. While both Gerda and Lili were artists, it was Gerda's paintings of beautiful women (many of whom turned out to be her husband) that caused the greatest sensation.

A painting of Lili by Gerda and Lili herself

The couple married in 1904 when Gerda was 17 and Einar was 22. According to a Copenhagen Post article, they lived happily with what at first was Einar's alter ego and later her full transition to Lili. Sadly, after Gerda's operation, the Danish government annulled the couple's marriage since two women could not be legally married in Denmark. How history loves to repeat itself.

Gerda had her own lesbian leanings. A successful painter and illustrator, she is perhaps most famous for her erotic lesbian imagery (most of which is too graphic to publish on these pages, but you can check out some of the NSFW imagery here.)

The novel by David Ebershoff is a fictionalized account of Lili's life and relationship with Gerda. With Nicole and Charlize attached, the project has gone from obscure to high-profile overnight. The two Academy Award winners bring considerable clout as well as some experience playing gay, with Charlize in Monster and Head in the Clouds, and Nicole in subtext with The Hours.

As hard as it is to envision Nicole — if only briefly — as a man, I couldn't be more thrilled at the pairing of these high-caliber actresses. It's about time more transsexual stories made it to the big screen. And the prospect of seeing Nicole and Charlize together as women is the stuff of lesbian dreams are made of. Well, imagine no more and bring on the popcorn.

So, who wants to race me to the ticket counter?

This is brilliant news, I was thrilled to read it early this morning. I love both these actresses as well, and relish the career choices they've made. And this film only confirms it.

Thanks for the report!

amazing

I think the only thing that I would think that this make even better if they had at mtF play Lili. But this is hollywood, So it is a step in the right direction.

Objection

I'm going to have to politely disagree with you here.

I would rather have an excellent oscar winning actress play the role than a lesser caliber mtf. I think Nicole will draw far more exposure not only from being in the movie but for possibly being up for an oscar. I also think her experience and talent will be more rewarding to viewers.

Eris_of_Myth's picture

I agree

If Kidman can pull this off, and we all know she has the chops, she will be a front-runner for the Oscar for Best Actress. Same with Theron for Supporting Actress. I think Kidman can pull off the transgendered character win that Felicity Huffman came close to a few years ago. Ofcourse, she will more than likely be up against everyone's favorite Golden Girl Hillary Swank in "Amelia".

It would be nice

...but I am glad two such accomplished actresses are bringing their considerable clout and profile to the roles. Transamerica goes to prove that as women and men, transsexuals are not so far apart from our fellow women and men in understanding that we cannot relate.

Much as it is important for people like Keith Olberman to speak out genuinely and passionately to straight people, it is important that non transsexual people do the same on our behalf. I have faith that it is well within the abilities of these two women to do the parts justice; I just hope their director is equally commited.

I hope it will not be too long until Transmen have more of a voice in the media too.

I am so there!!  Front of the line opening night!  Wow!  This is amazing news.  Yes casting a MtF would be the ideal, but at least these movies are out there being made, and two high calibre actresses like this will get it noticed and get it out there for people other than the LGBT community to see and learn from.

I would like to point out...

....that there's more to Charlize Theron than her amazing acting talent and beautiful looks. She's a brilliant, kind, compassionate, open-minded woman as well.

Her and her equally awesome and beautiful "husband", Stuart Townsend, have refused to be formally/traditionally/legally married until gays and lesbians can have their marriages recognized. They say that they never had a ceremony, but they consider each other husband and wife in a bonded-forever-and-ever sense.  Both of them are firm, passionate supporters of LGBT rights....they're just amazing.

And if you want to see something funny, I highly recommend you watch Stu Townsend as the pansexual pastry chef on Will & Grace...it's absolutely hilarious!

Wow

Being a trans girl (mtf) and being into women, and seeing this kind of relationship on screen, with two amazingly talented and beautiful actresses makes me reaaally happy. Can't wait to see it...

I think this is fantastic news! I'm sure both of these actresses will do their roles justice (since, of course, they've both proven that they're wonderful at what they do). Yay!

Wow, the first good gay news I've heard in while! I must say that I've never been a big fan of either one of them, but I suddenly gained much more respect voor them, wonder why that is...:p Anyway, I'll deffinitely watch this! It's amazing that two of the most prolific and famous stars are doing this, just amazing... can't wait!

Bring on

Bring on the popcorn indeed. Although how many cinemas are going to show this I wonder. Hopefully a fair few seeing as they are high profile actresses, and it does sound like a really good film already, with intriguing roles that I'm so glad that they’re both taking on. Oh I can’t wait to see the two of them *together* now. This has actually made my day, in a silly way.

Could this possibly end up having the same succes as Brokeback? Heavens I hope so!

And can I just say hurray for Denmark, all the way up to the cancelation of the marrige I was very a proud dane(but then it was the 30's). First MTF, first to free porn, among the first to reconize gay partnerships. Not marrige yet but we'll get there... I'm rambling, sorry...

Anyroad, female version of Brokeback with Theron and Kidman no less, I know I'll be queing at the nearest cinema.

This sounds like a fascinating story, with reliably good performers too. I'm looking forward to it greatly.

It's put me in mind of Jan Morris, the Welsh travel writer and historian. She and her wife have been together nearly sixty years, first as man and wife, then as a divorced female couple and now as spouses once again, having had their civil union earlier this year. I embarrassed myself on the tube by filling up as I read about it in the paper.

Don't mean to be a party

Don't mean to be a party pooper but if you read a bit about the background then I think it's going to very difficult to make this into a feel-good movie.
I'm really surprised that they did that kind of surgey so early when at the same time homosexuality was forbidden (not that it's the same thing, but still).
But they sure had a different approach to eugenics and other "experiments" on the human body in those days. Like sterilizing "crazy" people. So mayby it was considered a surgical challenge of some sort.
But the story surely has all the elements of a fantastic movie!  Don't know why but they always seemed to be living REALLY on the edge in the thirties.

These Oscar-winning actresses look stunning. I read here (http://www.projectweightloss.com/index.php) about how Charlize maintains her fabulous figure and why she gave up modeling for acting and ...wow, talk about strenght!

Nicole

hmmm

Personally I feel that Nicole Kidman is a grossly overrated actress. Being an Australian you just come to hate the phrase "Our Nicole" and the whole hype surrounding her in Australian media. Whilst she does bring with her visibility I am not convinced that she is the greatest actress for the role. However, she does occasionaly deliver a noteworthy performance  here's hoping that this is one of these occasions.
