News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Music for lesbian matrimony

It’s been a good week to be gay. It’s been a particularly good week to be gay and in California. Looking through all the pictures of happy couples getting their gay marriage on this week has been an absolute joy. No, I’m not crying. That’s something in my eye. Really, I’m not crying. Fine, who has some tissue?

All these nuptials naturally got me thinking about wedding traditions and, more specifically, the first dance. As luck would have it, Yahoo Music just posted a list of the “Top First-Dance Songs” according to a new survey. The results can only appropriately be called schmaltztastic. I mean it, “On Bended Knee” by Boyz II Men, “I Swear” by All-4-One and Aladdin’s theme?

Really, straight people? Really?

Of course I agree with some of them. You can’t go wrong with the classics: Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong. Uh-uh-uh, not so fast Celine Dion. But I think we can still do better – much, much better. How about we make our own list? Some of the picks I share with our chapel-bound straight friends. But the rest, well, they’re just another reason it’s good to be gay.

The Top 10 Totally Gay First-Dance Songs (click each to play):

1) “At Last,” Etta James

At last, indeed. Wrap your heart up in clover, lovebirds.

2) “All You Need is Love,” The Beatles

It’s all you need, it’s all that matters.

3) “I’m Coming Out,” Diana Ross

Hey, who says a first dance can’t be disco?

4) “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World,” Israel Kamakawiwo_ole

Rainbows, The Wizard of Oz and ukuleles? No need for further explanation.

5) “Closer to Fine,” Indigo Girls

Because all of your lesbian friends will sing along.

6) “My Funny Valentine,” Frank Sinatra

If you listen closely to the lyrics it’s pretty snarky, and gays love the snarky.

7) “Dancing Queen,” ABBA

It’s ABBA, that’s why.

8) “No Ordinary Love,” Sade

Indeed, this isn’t an ordinary love. It’s extraordinary.

9) “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly Parton

Because Dolly is fabulous and The Bodyguard was a terrible movie.

10) Anything by Madonna

No gay event can be complete with a little Material Girl. Plus, we know she already has appropriate attire to wear to the wedding.

So, what do you think? Did I leave anything good, gay or good and gay out? And, fine, I’ll also take just the plain old romantic stuff, too. You big softies. Happy gay marriage, California!

Sally10825's picture

Great list!

I totally agree that anything by Madonna would be far better than any "straight" selected music as first dance!  You made me laugh!

I love At Last by Etta James. It always makes me feel all mushy and romantic.

An excellent list. We do love the snarky.

Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth.

Fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words; they are perspectives.

Coincidence..

...was having a forage through your blog while flicking back and forth to afterellen...can you tell it's a slow work day and the boss is out of the office?

Nice choices indeed.  My wife (not officially although since Civil Unions were introduced here a few years ago we've discussed it) wants that version of Somewhere over the rainbow at our wedding.  'Our' song is actually from the Pretty Woman soundtrack...hooker gets rich guy...how romantic.  It's 'Fallen' by Lauren Woods.  Beautiful song.

In the slushy department I fall for 'I've had the time of my life' from Dirty Dancing everytime or my mum and stepdad's first dance choice, The Rose by Bette Midler.

My 3 favourite songs of all time will probably feature somewhere in there but not the most cohesive of choices:

Dolly Parton - 9 to 5, Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper and The New Radicals - You get what you give.

SportyAllison's picture

First dances!

The Rose has always held a special place in my heart, it would be a beautiful first dance song!

Unfortunately, you kind of have to have a significant other to get married these days... oh well, a girl can dream!

Are you feelin' what I'm flingin'?

keepon325's picture

Very good list

My add would be "I Have Loved You Before" by Melissa Etheridge, which is a fabulous choice for a first dance.

My favorite first choice however would be: "At Last" by Etta James, followed immediately by Etta singing "You Can Leave Your Hat On."

local phoenix artist...if i were to every do the married thing with my girl...i would love for our first dance be to tina angotti's "and i do"...go to itunes....love that song...

but I like "My Lady's a Wild, Flying Dove" by Tom Paxton.  Tom Paxton wrote it as an engagement gift to his wife.  It's so sweet it gives me a toothache, but it's a love song.  What do you expect?

However, it was my "song" with an ex, so I can never use it as a first dance--or really, any dance--with anyone else, cause that would be weird.  but I love the song.  When that ex and I broke up, I said to a friend, "Dammit!  I really liked this song, and now I'm not going to be able to listen to it for a long time.  From now on, I'm going to save really good songs for after I've been with someone for at least a couple of years."

nogoodpunkkid's picture

that song is amazing!!!

i love that song too. what a shame that it's been ruined for you. maybe you could find someone else and reclaim it?

Being a hopeless romantic.....

I think I may ask our first song to be the song I played when I proposed, which was Ben Harper's "Forever".  Either that or we may have our wedding party/ friends do the thriller dance with us... haven't decided. lol

Like a Virgin

A few years ago I attended a lesbian wedding/blessing at the local Presbyterian Church.

One of the brides came down the aisle to 'Like a Virgin'.  The sight of the 60year old church organist nodding along as she played will stay with me for a long time

I think the nodding along from the  60year old church organist could be a funny part in a movie, lol!!!

One more song for the list...

I really like your list, but I would add "Save the last dance for me" by The Drifters...you could also change the word "last" to "lezz"....xD

Sinatra...

I always joked that my first dance would be to Meatloafs "two out of three ain't bad"

anyways...that elderly couple wedding made me really proud and happy.

I kind of got teary reading it. Pass me those tissues, please.

great idea!

"Where Do I Begin" by Shirley Bassey would be in my top choices for first dance song. its slow at times, its got a great beat at other times, it has romantic lyrics. perfect, in my book

cariad's picture

I love it!

Recently, I heard about a couple planning to play "When I Get Up" by Tegan & Sara as their first dance. It's such a wonderful, acoustic little song, and so romantic! Makes me tear up a little bit from all the cute... awesome list, Snarker!

Yay for Iz! He's a wonderful choice. In keeping with the Hawaiian thing, I'd also go with anything by Keali'i Reichel. This is his version of In My Life. Sacrilege to some, perhaps, but he's great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBoN6t3Enkc And there's Kawaipunahele for the guys (since it's written about his partner). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIovxJK5rQo

How about k.d lang and Simple. Is she not an obvious choice? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBoN6t3Enkc

And oh! I forgot! Last Dance! Just for the Xena nostalgia. Please don't judge the singing quality, it's just so much fun. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZTf9xH3xe0

We also have to rememebr that we can't tease the straight people too much. These two rock. Hilarious!

If you listen to Aretha

If you listen to Aretha Franklin's "I've Never Loved a Man The Way That I Love You", and imagine she's singing to a girl .. it becomes one of the gayest songs ever. Kinda like re-imagining Ice and Slider in Top Gun as boyfriends.

I'm getting married in October, so this very helpful. My future mother-in-law will be singing "Hawaiian Wedding Song". No word yet on her singing capabilities.

what a good choice! tho I don't know which version I prefer : Sade, Deftones or Urbandub, the three are amazing.

I concur, petbluedragon

Melissa's  "I Have Loved You Before" was the first one off the top of my head, too.

And to combine a little irony with a lot of heart-felt sentiment, "I've Never Loved a Man the Way That I Love You" by Aretha Franklin.

My bird and I got married

My bird and I got married just over 1 yr ago, we walked down the aisle to 'stickwitu' by PCD and our first dance was 'Amazed' by Lonestar, love the meatloaf idea, wish I'd thought of that.

The thing is..... When you don't expect it..... It hits twice as hard.....

"I Was Married"

I immediately thought of Tegan & Sara's "I Was Married" from The Con. The song sounds lovely and light, and the lyrics are perfect.

I married in the sun
(Tell me when, tell me when)
Against the stone of buildings built before
you and I were born
(Start again, start again)
Into My heart confusion grows against
the muscles fought so long
(Fought. So. Long)
to control against the pull of one magnet to another
Magnet to another
Magnets...

Now we look up in
(Tell me who, tell me who)
into the eyes of bullies breaking backs.
They seem so very tough
(It's a lie, it's a lie)
they seem so very scared of us.
I look into the mirror
(Look. In. To )
for evil that just doesn't exists.
I don't see what they see.
(Tell. Them. That. )
to control against the pull of one magnet to another
Magnet to another
Magnet to another
Magnets...

first dance song.

if i ever get married. my first dance song would have to be either:

Beauty by The Shivers
" i give my love and all my love to you, my love/i feast on love, a beast for love, release my love/you're scared and unprepared for love, don't care my love/cause youre the only woman i've been dreaming of/i swear to god i'm loving you for that/i swear to god i'm making you my wife"
(sounds its extremely cheezy but the way he sings it makes me cry.)

First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes
(possibly the most beautiful video ever.)

A FEW SUGGESTONS

A Long & Lasting Love by Chrystal Gayle

Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman by Bryan Adams

Make You Feel My Love by Adele

The Way You Look Tonight by Elton John

My Girl by The Temptations

Some Kind Of Wonderful by Betty

A slow song is very necessary as a first song because you get to hold your lady close :-)

I'm getting married next month

I'm so glad we're having a 10 minute ceremony with no music or schmaltzy crap. We're pretty sappy, but we don't subject others to it.

We're having the ceremony for the legal status - we've been married for years in every way that counts.

One More to Consider

My first dance would have to be to "Breathe" by Bliss. I first heard this on a Verboten Liebe clip (in the background the first time Carla and Suzanne make love). It just seems to have THE perfect rhythm. And how could you resist the sexy vocals?

It's time for everybody
To listen to the sound
And all the lonely people
Who live beneath the ground
Don't listen to another
Just listen to yourself

'Cause only change can happen
When you change yourself
I won't run
I won't hide
I only want to live
To live my life

So many great song choices

Oh, "Amazed" by Lonestar is a wonderful choice!

I'm a big fan of "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton; it just has a very sincere sound, moreso than Whitney Houston's version; although I do admire Whitney's lungs!

Melissa Etheridge - This Moment

I am totally in love with this song, and if I ever was to be married, I'd choose this song.

Or if I'm to be unserious I'd be playing Murderdolls - Die My Bride lol (yeah I'm mostly about metal music)

Lezliemac's picture

Can I say Lezzies on X?

ok not so romantic, but HIGHLY appropriate :

Sisters in the struggle !!!!

"We've been waiting all our liiiiiiives... For our sisters to be our looooooooovers "

See? Appropriate. And fun.
And: party...

First dance song

I married 4 years ago (in the Netherlands) and our choice was Diana Ross with "When you tell me that you love me."

Some of the lyrics:

In a world without you
I would always hunger
All I need is your love to make me stronger

And baby
Every time you touch me
I become a hero
I'll make you safe
No matter where you are
And bring you
Everything you ask for
Nothing is above me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
When you tell me that you love me

I agree with chilaxin: you need a slow song because you get to hold your lady close.

Patty Griffin

I would have to vote for Heavenly Day by the amazing Patty Griffin...When I saw her in concert she told the audience that everyone assumes she wrote the song for a person but in actuality she wrote the song about her dog.  That just makes me love it even more!

I just posted this same comment before I saw yours! lol. we want the same wedding song..nice! It is an amazingly beautiful song! Patty Griffin's voice is beautiful.

Yes!

Patty Griffin is probably one of my favorite singers of all time. Though I do enjoy the song "Heavenly Day" and the album Children Loving Through, her album Living with Ghosts is absolutely stunning and hands down her best album.

If any of you love Patty, I recommend that you listen to her song "Time Will Do The Talking".

The "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" cover by Israel Kamakawiwo ole was played at the end of MSNBC's Tribute to Tim Russert yesterday... I don't think I can hear it without bursting in to tears since then.

How about "River Waltz" by Cowboy Junkies? It's used in Lost & Delirious and I think it's absolutely beautiful and kinda gay, too xD

Funny use of "At Last"

My brother married his 2nd wife after they had 4 kids, so it's no surprise that "At Last" was their wedding song.

I should give this more thought, but the first 2 songs that come to mind are:

"Anniversary Song" Cowboy Junkies

"Top of the World" Shonen Knife

I Hate 'Closer to Fine' So Damn Much It's Insane>>

So my choice for first dance would be a toss up between these:

'Look What You Done For Me' -Al Green (one of the most romantic songs in the world)

'Summertime Rolls'- Jane's Addiction (ditto)

'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'- Roberta Flack

'Pink Kashmir'- Prince

'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic'- The Police (solely for the line: 'Do I have to tell the story/of a thousand rainy days/since we first met?' *SIGH*)

'Wrapped Around Your Finger'- The Police (romantic but not as mushy as Every Little Thing... or as angry and twisted as 'Every Breath You Take.'  This one is just right)

'Something' -The Beatles (damn George Harrison could write a love song!)

'This Is Not A Love Song'- Public Image Limited (for a laugh!)

'Daydreaming'- Earth, Wind and Fire (YEAH, BABY!!!)

ok-that's off the top of my head.

Closer to Fine?

Uhmm...if you're gonna go with an Indigo Girls song for a wedding, it should probably be "Power of Two" or "Least Complicated." I'm so gay I proposed to my partner at an Indigo Girls concert while they were playing "Least Complicated." LOL

"Under Your Spell" from the Buffy musical "Once More with Feeling" since it's actually a lesbian love song.

"That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" by Carly Simon. eh, I dunno...I guess some of it is cynical...but the chorus is so fitting a gay wedding.

"Thank You" by Led Zeppelin would most likely be chosen by my partner and I whenever we actually get married. It's "our" song.
