Maria Bello gets wrapped up in "The Mummy"

Maria Bello is stepping into Rachel Weisz’s mummy-fighting shoes for the third installment of the hit action-adventure franchise. In April, it was announced that Academy Award-winner Weisz had declined another run at the undead alongside Brendan Fraser in The Mummy 3: Curse of the Dragon.

Bello will pull a Bewitched-style Dick York/Dick Sargent switcheroo as she plays adventuress Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, portrayed in the first two films by Weisz. And, while I’m not really a fan of the series (if I wanted to watch Indiana Jones again, I’d just rent the movies), I am a fan of interesting casting choices.

Why is it interesting? For starters, at 40, Bello is older than the 36-year-old Weisz. While it’s not a huge age difference, it is worth noting. How many successful Hollywood productions can you think of where the lead actress was replaced by an older actress? Yeah, I’m still trying to think of one over here.

Bello has a salt-of-the-earth sexiness and matter-of-fact intelligence that make her a good bet in almost any role. She can be glamorous and she can kick ass. Plus, she was in that super-schlocky piece of eye candy known as Coyote Ugly. Really, that is apropos of nothing, but I wanted a chance to post the best thing about the movie — the cast photo. Maybe they could work leather halter tops into her Mummy wardrobe. Just a suggestion.

Hmmm...

I really liked Weisz's characterization in The Mummy and Mummy Returns. When an actress plays a librarian, even one who's an archivist, it can turn out so badly. She seemed to have the right amount of geeky/nerdy and the right amount of fun lovin' strong woman-ness...

I guess we'll see how Bello does with the character, as long as her librarian doesn't go the way of Noah Wyle's, the profession will be okay I think... :)

Bello

Did you see Bello in 'A History of Violence'? What she was able to pull off in that roll totally floored me. Simply a great, great actress. And, of course, in my head she's totally gay and we swap recipes and gardening tips over middling, if pretentious, merlot on the back patio while shooting silly string at the starlings. Then we have a tickle fight.

jennifer you need to

get out more, love.

Best Bello for me is The Cooler. Then I'm always a sucker for blonde hair & brown eyes.

Was Maria Ever In...

A movie with Linda Cardinelli? Because that would be awesome, totally awesome.

Bello was also in a movie called 'Dark'. It was pretty alright. And I've not seen A History of Violence, but I totally own Coyote Ugly! Piper, Maria, what's not to like? And Assault on Precinct 13 was alright too!

I think Bello's a fine choice to play Evie, because if Wiez isn't going to (although she should because didn't The Mummy kinda launch her career to some degree?) then who else could do it with as much spunk, maybe even more?!

History of Violence

I've seen that film but didn't connect the photo to the actress until someone else mentioned it- that can't be a positive thing! I'm not sure about having an all-out replacement actress for the role, it damages credibility (alright, I know it's about mummies and tombs but some people believe that stuff!) and I have to admit that Weisz and Brendan Fraser were good together.

It'll be an interesting watch at any rate.

I've never seen her in

I've never seen her in anything, and as much as I adored Weisz in the first two (as a library junkie it was so refreshing to see one played as not being hopelessly dorky...plus, omg adorable!), I don't think Bello will be a bad replacement at all, at least from what I've seen/read.

Ah nuts...

Now I'll have to go see this movie...

And I hated one and two...

But really, after ER and Coyote Ugly... Anything for Maria Bello!

you can't get it from t.v., you can't force it on
anybody else.
