Madge to the movies: We'll always have BaghdadMadonna wants to remake Casablanca. Maybe. OK, fine, this is just a fairly unsubstantiated rumor. But still, the mere thought of remaking such a Hollywood classic gives cinephiles everywhere the vapors.
The Daily Mail (so put a whole rim of salt around that margarita of a rumor) claims that Madge is interested in remaking and modernizing the iconic war-time romance. According to the paper, the Material Girl wants to set the story in Iraq and star in the Ingrid Bergman role. Their anonymous source said: “She wants to update the story and maybe set it in a modern war zone such as Iraq. There is no script yet. Madonna and her people are testing the waters to see if this is the right vehicle for her and if a major studio will get behind the project.” The paper goes on to say that studios have been lukewarm to the idea. Lukewarm? I'm downright icy at the idea. Not that I have anything against Madonna. On the contrary, I love her. But her movies? No so much. Swept Away, anyone? No, I didn't think so.
Remakes are a tricky business. More often than not they turn out as either strangely slavish replicas (Psycho, The Stepford Wives) or silly star vehicles (Sabrina, Love Affair). Rarely do you get a genuinely original update (Clueless, Ocean's 11). Considering that Casablanca makes almost everyone's top-movies-of-all-time list, from the American Film Institute right on down to your Great Aunt Ida, remaking it would be an audacious, ballsy and — very likely — stupid endeavor.
But while Madonna has been many things, she has rarely been stupid. (Swept — cough — Away) So who knows, maybe her movie could be the next, um, Casablanca. The Daily Mail even provided a helpful mock-up of a possible poster:
So, Casablanca: The Iraq Story — brilliant or boneheaded? But remember, this is only a rumor. If this had been an actual remake, you would have been given instructions on where to hide and who to blame. Submitted by on April 2, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

umm, please don't.
my subject says it all.

NOOO...
.......ooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
Bad form, bad form!! are we sure this isn't a latent April Fools Day joke?
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
It's always our self we find in the sea
Hmm...
Maybe Madge could play Bogie's role alongside someone like, oh, Kate Winslet. Now that's a movie I'd stand in line for!
I like the way you think.
I like the way you think. This is the only way I would go see such a movie.
On the other hand, a romance set in Iraq is not a terrible idea. But why does it have to be a Casablanca remake? Can't someone come up with an original idea?
movie remakes...
...are tricky business, alright. you either end up with the exact same movie, usually with the first one being better, or no semblance of the original movie at all.
they just remade Prom Night. now, i wasn't a huge fan of the jamie lee curtis version, but this new one has nothing to do with the plot line of the original! the "big twist" at the end is what really makes the movie. in fact the circumstances surrounding the prom killer just makes more sense in the original. i have no idea where they pulled this new version from.
~i am bisexual. you are confused.~
Yes, it must be an April Fools' Day joke
then again, I thought the "F1 honcho in Nazi sex video shock" was also an April Fools' Day joke. Sadly, I was mistaken. I've also seen _Shanghai Surprise_ and suspect that Madonna thinks she looks good with her current scrag body.
So, anything is possible.

I dont know who Loretta is but that is a funny quote!!!
Loretta is my hero
Gotta love those westies/bogans (now that's really gonna confuse those north americans - hee hee :-)
As for Madge remaking 'Gone with the Wind' - Please let it be a joke
not funny
Casablanca is my favorite movie. its amazing because its still relevent...there is NO need to update it.
I like Madonna, but for the love of God, as far as acting goes...she is no Bergman!
I really hope this is either a rumor or a late april fools joke cause some things are sacred...and Casablanca is one of them.
You know what should be done to singers who assume they can act?
I think they should be tied down. And forced. To listen. To me singing. For. Three. Hours. So then, they can get an idea of what it feels like when they do something like The Pink Panther or Glitter. Or even worse, threaten to murder Casablanca.
Don't get me wrong, talent is great. There are some really great singers out there. There are some really great actors out there. Having one does not guarantee you have the other. Wanting to make a movie does not always mean you should or can make a movie, etc. And when you do make that mistake, it's painful enough as is... Without mutilating a masterpiece like Casablanca. I personally wouldn't ever condone a remake of Casablanca. Even if it had actors in it. Even if it had really, really good actors in it. It's just... Untouchable.
Please, Madonna, Ingrid Bergman and Bogey are already dead. They don't need to be killed again. Please let this be an April fool's day joke.
Yay! Or...not?
Well...
Madonna + Movies doesn't always = disaster. I cite, of course, predominantly A League of Their Own (though it could be easily argued her role wasn't even substantial) and Desperately Seeking Susan, though I admit I've not seen any of her "stinkers".
However, acting prowess aside, I agree with the majority of previous posts that Madonna needs to stay the fuck away from Casablanca! A slight nod to the original would be alright, somewhat following the framework but constructing a completley different story... but if you even claim a remake, it's bound to turn out disasterously.
In short, Madonna + Movies = yay! Madonna + Casablanca = no dice.
