Lucy Lawless and lesbians bring the sexy to the "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" trailer

Hey, remember when the makers of Spartacus: Blood and Sand said there would include lesbian characters? Um, they weren’t kidding. The trailer for the new Starz dramatic series premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. Let me tell you, this picture of series regular Lucy Lawless is the least racy thing about it.

The trailer is gory, and sexy, and gory some more. I really cannot over emphasize the gory part. So if you are at all squeamish about violence, blood or limb-loss, perhaps skip the trailer. If not, just be aware it’s somewhat NSFW. [Hat tip, Laura!]

Yes, I realize you’re thinking: “Hey, didn’t I see this movie? But wasn’t Lena Headey in it?” The comparisons to 300 are inescapable. The sprays of blood, the CGIed scenery, the sweaty shirtless men in sandals. But there are some noted differences. This is a show inspired by the real-life Roman slave, Spartacus, who in 73 B.C. led a revolt that grew to more than 120,000 fighters. And it has Lucy Lawless nearly robeless. Hello.

The series also says it will have more graphic sex and violence than 300. Which, if the trailer is any indication, isn’t an empty boast. Say hello to lady loving, antiquity style.

Hey, I thought I read Lucy’s character — the wife of the gladiator slave camp owner — wasn’t going to be gay? Or perhaps this is just a therapeutic massage.

And then, just in case those first two were too ambiguous, there’s this. (We’ve covered everyone up for modesty’s sake. This is an all-ages site, after all and ancient Rome was decidedly NC-17.)

The series comes with some serious pedigree behind the scenes. The show is produced by Xena: Warrior Princess producers Rob Tapert (Lawless's real-life husband) and Sam Raimi. Angel producer and Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer Steven S. DeKnight serves as showrunner.

Australian actor and relative newcomer Andy Whitfield plays Spartacus with Dante’s Cove and Bitch Slap! alum Erin Cummings as Spartacus’ wife.

I think they should have named this thing Spartacus: Blood and Skin — because I think I see just as much of it as I do sand in the preview. It premieres January 2010.

So, what do you think? Too gory? Too racy? Or are you just frantically wondering if you get the Starz channel right about now?

Wow, just from the preview,

Wow, just from the preview, it looks absolutely epic.  Too bad I don't get starz :/  I'll just have to find it online somewhere...
Melissa Hsu's picture

I don't have it neither...

I want to see this to but I don't get starz neither... I don't even have showtime. Blah!

If you find this show online when it comes out before I do, please let me know where you found it... :)

hmmm...

ok.  this actually looks interesting. i have yet to check out the trailer, but in reading the information about the show, it does look tempting...puns not intended. actually, anything with lucy lawless in it grabs my attention. this sort of reminds me of "rome meets spartacus"...and all the movies relating to the gladiator/300 era. i will watch it as i am a subscriber to stz and other cable stations. what i find rather curious is that a cable station other than SHO or HBO is attempting a grab into a "series" and it looks and sound like a real wowzer!! blood, guts, violence and possible women in homoerotic scenes..."how" can one resisit? of course i will give it a spin and watch!

That looked awesome.

I don't think I would even need the 'lesbian' characters or even Lucy Lawless to be sold though. I'm a sucker for those time based cable series.

Definitely Frantically Wondering

This is going to be awesome. And even though I have dirty reasons, I am estatic that Lucy Lawless is going to be back on my television or computer screen.

More violence

More violence than the series Rome Excellent...Can't wait to see this...it looks absoultly brilliant
The Sci-Fi Bard's picture

Yep, way more violent than Rome...

but surely the whole thing is just a massive rip-off of 300? The more I look at the trailer the more I think the people who made 300 should sue the makers of Spartacus! The visuals, the effects, even down to the music used in the trailer is such a blatant lift from the movie that surely it'd be considered plagiarism?

That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing it, though I have no idea when, as I'm in the UK.

But then, Lucy Lawless in a robe......Mmmmmm, that'd make me wait a fair while quite happily ;-)

TheBotoxChicken's picture

Definitely 300 rip off

Definitely a rip off of 300. Just watch the trailers for both and it's obvious.

Who cares? I'm going to watch it anyways! That is, if I have Starz...-sniffle-

mudpiegirl's picture

i predict

though I will be glad to be proven wrong, that the term lesbian maybe a bit misleading. It just kind of looks like some of this involves female slaves and/or servants. And I read the same thing about Lawless' character not being a lesbian, but from the picture you would think she's getting some kind of TCL from another woman. So again, does it not count if she's only being tended to by a servant(?) who just happens to be a woman?

Anyhoo, I don't have Starz so I probably won't get a chance to find out. And I'm not saying there's not a lot of talent and reason to watch... I just find that the phrase lesbian is sometimes kind of generously applied.

Xena-cast cameos

The question was raised about other Xena-cast cameos during the Comic-Con panel discussion. I think you may be disappointed as two different people asked about Renee and Kevin. See YouTube vids put up by AUSXIP for their answer:

"[P]erhaps this is just a therapeutic massage."

Oh, I hope not.

Incidentally, I'm thinking the "lesbian" content in the trailer is vastly disproportionate to what will be on the show. In any case, the shots in the trailer look like more instances of super skinny, super straight white women making out with each other for no real reason except to please straight men. And here I am thinking "The L Word" was over.

"super skinny, super

"super skinny, super straight white women"

Well if you hadn't noticed in probably the best capture of them all, one of the fine ladies right behind Lucy on the bed that is um... pleasing her in the background is Black.

And none of these women look skinny to me.

super skinny is like all

super skinny is like all these new teenage actresses who stop eating before they've even grown so their HEAd is dispropotionate to thir bodies... like on the new 90210 , and Im sorry... but yes, spencer n ashley.

Yuckers.

The women up there.... Not super skinny ... fine.. just fine.... in my humble opinion =)

300

It's funny that you mentioned 300 'cause the black guy in the trailer is the same one who plays the messenger who is victim of the "THIS IS SPARTA" push in the well of no end. I'm in Canada so I'm curious to know if we are going to get the show and in what chanel, maybe I should update my cable! Worst case scenario I'll watch it online then buy the seasons on DVD cause it'll look good next to my Rome and Frank Miller's collections.

LUCY, BECAUSE OF YOU I'M SEEING STARZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I admit I was a bit disappointed when Lucy decided to move back to New Zealand plays the secondary role of Lucretia, whose husband owns Spartacus, the slave. I was unhappy and confused about this turn of events because on many different occasions throughout the years I had heard Lucy state that she wouldn't play someone's wife, and that she didn't want to be a Bond Girl but to (metaphorically) be James Bond.

My low opinion of Lucy's new career took a sudden turn for the better when I saw her Spartacus video snippets and the Comic Con interviews on youtube this weekend. I am now persuaded that Lucy isn't going to play a sedate wifey-poo but a bisexual Lady McBeth who has a huge appetite for sex, manipulation and depravity. <YES!>

I am quite happy and titillated that Lucy is taking on this highly visible and controversial role and that she's fearless in 'showing it all.' <BE STILL MY HEART>

And YES, I am going to subscribe to Starz starting in mid December, just in time for the premiere of Spartacus (but really just to see Lucy Lawless.)

I can only hope that Lucy isn't too busy at the end of January 2010 so she can attend the 15th Annual XWP Convention and perform another of her deliciously erotic and outrageous lesbionic concerts/musicals. You gals don't know what you are missing until you see Lucy Lawless in person!  I have heard the term ‘hot’ bandied about for decades (and was often dismissive of this overused term) until I met Lucy Lawless in person. I can honestly say I have never met a more vibrant, charismatic, sexy, gorgeous, sharp, commanding, witty, giving, kind, living in the moment, and incredibly intelligent and creative person as Lucy Lawless. Just standing in Lucy's presence makes you feel as if you are standing before a REAL goddess (I am not kidding OR exaggerating.)

I must second...

...every single thing you said KT! I have not had the prvledge of seeing her in concert yet, but, I ahve stood in her presence and spent a little time with her. It ws the most amazing hour or so of my life! She truly radiates GODDESS!I look forward to the day when I can see her in concert so I can also expirence that side of her.

Oh, and I thnk she is following through with the quote in my signature below. ;)

Ditto!

I am SO hoping she does another concert for the 2010 con - I'm travelling all the way from the UK to attend, and after seeing her gig in London in '08 I really want to see her live again.

Are we seeing text where there's only subtext?

I read the article before watching the trailer, and was really disappointed by the gap between anticipation and reality.

The stills that were culled for the article have a combined screen-time of < 1 second in the trailer,  which runs for about 1 minute 45. Doing the math, that's about 0.7% gay lovin' (at most!). Not nearly enough to make me want to watch the show just for the hope of some very rare girl-on-girl action...  :-(

I am, you know. . . . . . yours.

~sigh~

dntelfan's picture

Agreed.

Exactly. Thank god she took screen shots though or I might've missed the fact that there was anything sapphic at all!

As bad as the L Word was (and it was baaad) I think its departure has left a void we are waiting to have filled. Oh how I love for something with lesbians! Pretty ones too always helps! ;) And now that This Just Out has ended, I'm beside myself! Sigh.

Lesbian or not...

Lucy Laweless is kissing women and that's enough of a sell for me. Normally, I don't go for such tacky publicity but to see that woman making out with other women is a dream of mine LOL. And who knows, maybe the show might actually be decent.

Lesbian or not ...

I completely agree with you SubtextRules! -- anything to do with a naked Lucy Lawless, a woman I have been salivating over for FOURTEEN (yes that is 14) years, is a dream cum true for me .....

Miracles do happen -- most especially Lucy Lawless having sex with women! (even if its pretend ...)

Lesbians? Or do you mean "lesbians?"

I must echo earlier comments -- I do not think these quick sapphic flashes in the trailer are giving a true indication that there will be involved lesbian storylines on the show. The way I see it, this show with its blood and testosterone is squarely aimed at male viewers. My guess is there are some auxilliary lesbian characters for the sake of showing some hot girl-on-girl action, but I won't hold my breath for any kind of sincere emotional love story between two women or well-developed lesbian characters. I am fascinated by ancient Rome and would love to be proved wrong -- especially with the current drought of lesbianism on TV -- but I just feel like this marketing tool has been used enough that I can spot it by now.
