Lindsay does her best Marilyn

Every sexy young starlet who comes along has a bit of a Marilyn Monroe complex. Such is the unattainable legacy of leaving this mortal coil before one’s time. But besides the flat-put imitators and (rest her troubled soul) Anna Nicole Smith, few have stepped so audaciously into the iconic sex symbol’s footsteps as Lindsay Lohan did recently. You see, Lindsay, the promising redhead turned paparazzi princess turned rehab veteran, has re-created Marilyn’s famed last photo shoot with its original photographer Bert Stern for New York magazine.

A troubled starlet imitating a doomed starlet? Oh, dear. While it’s admirable to want to emulate Marilyn’s legend, something seems untoward about a young woman with admitted substance abuse issues so happily reprising the icon’s final days. Marilyn’s 1962 photo shoot, simply called “The Last Sitting,” was completed just six weeks before her death from an apparent barbiturate overdose.

No nudity was spared for Lindsay’s shoot, though thankfully the booze that flowed freely during the original sessions was acutely absent at the re-creations. (See the full set here, but I’m not kidding about the nudity — it’s NSFW. And P.S., we’ve also edited out the naughtiest bits in this post for your safe-for-all-ages AfterEllen.com viewing pleasure.)

Now, I don’t have a huge problem with the shots themselves. Linds looks healthier than she has in a while, and heavens knows I, as a rule, never object to women taking their clothes off. But it’s the creepy context and similarities that give one pause. I wonder what exactly Lindsay was thinking by both baring it all and linking herself so closely to such a tragic history.

The 21-year-old star said it was an easy decision to pose for the shoot: “I didn’t have to put much thought into it. I mean, Bert Stern? Doing a Marilyn shoot? When is that ever going to come up? It’s really an honor.” She also admitted to an “abiding obsession with Monroe.” She bought one of her old apartments and has “a lot of Marilyn stuff,” including a huge painting.

Lindsay drew her own parallels to Marilyn’s untimely death and actor Heath Ledger’s recent accidental prescription overdose: “They are both prime examples of what this industry can do to someone.” But when asked about the obvious parallels she was drawing between herself and Marilyn’s fate with the photo shoot, she apparently said, with some annoyance, “I don’t know. I’m not them. But I sure as hell wouldn’t let it happen to me.”

Well, let’s hope not. So what do you think? Classy tribute? Eerie foreshadowing? Or just yay, naked ladies?

original vs copy

i find the rearrangements distasteful and lindsay not sexy. instead of rather interpreting or reviving an icons image, shes just a cheap (and although sometimes cute, not even goodlooking here) copy..dont think she thought about marilyns circumstances of the shoot too much, when she agreed too.
Jadey's picture

Completely agree

I am a really huge Marilyn fan, and Lidsey just does not compare at all to Marilyn.

Marilyn had more curves and a bit of class, i found it a kind of cheap copy.

Agree

Amen, sisters!!

Hmm...well...

Not to be one to pooh-pooh ladies taking their clothes off, but it seems somehow less prolific than the originals.  Too light, too bright, too thin.  Marilyn Monroe was troubled and tormented in ways that women can't really be in this day and age, and as much as I adore Lindsay Lohan, she's too young , too narrow hipped (!) to pull this off.  Give it a couple more years Linds, till you've seen life and all the horribly wonderfull things its capable of.  You'll be perfect for it then.

Marilyn Monroe was troubled

Marilyn Monroe was troubled and tormented in ways that women can't really be in this day and age.....

I know this was written awhile ago, but are you fucking kidding me? I hope so.

Gia007's picture

Faux pas

You know Lauren, you're absolutely right...that was an enormous cockup of a generalisation.  What I should've said was '....that SOME women can't really be in this day and age'.   But you're missing the point I was making. Marilyn Monroe was lived in, she had gestures, lines, actions and a face that betrayed her internal stuggles and one can only imagine the length and depth of them.  Lindsay Lohan is a child and, to quote someone whos name I can't remember, 'shall never feel so much or see so far' at this point in her life.  Ergo, she is not the correct person to re-illustrate the last photo shoot of Marilyn Monroe.

Just to add a few things, I believe that in this day and age, some women (perhaps many even) in a 21st century, 1st world country i.e USA, Great Britain, France etc, do have a choice/opportunity 2 stand up and be counted.  To live a life that isn't based on what their 'man' may or may not deem them worthy of.  To raise children while having a successful career, to have a good cry without those around her thinking that she's unstable, emotional or having a case of the fuckin 'vapours'.   I come from a 3rd world country, I understand the horrors, I have lived the horrors, I understand  loss, unhappiness, emptiness and hey, maybe I subsist in a bubble now, but I don't think that I'm the only woman that gets  up in the morning (INSPITE OF THESE THINGS OR MAYBE BECAUSE OF THEM)  to lead a group of 20 staff and a clientele that often reach 600 or 700 on friday and saturday night, successfully.  I'll use afterellen vloggers and bloggers as examples of women leaders of our time!! Marilyn Monroe was an icon of her age, a heroine of her time and just a plain, simple hero of mine, but 'the times, they are a-changing...'

D-slilgrrl's picture

Well said.

I completely agree. I love Lindsey for who she is and how far she has come, but I don't think she compares to Marilyn; not that she was trying to, I would imagine. Personally, I don't think anyone past, present or future could compare to the late great Ms. Monroe.

NoToriousTori's picture

Whoa...

I checked out the set and I have to say that it kind of seemed like a good idea but then...it wasn't. Whereas I've always loved Lindsey Lohan for her aesthetic beauty (except around the time where the whole world thought she needed a biscuit) and was never enthralled when it came down to Marilyn Monroe (haha I'd originally typed Manson), there was something a little unsettling about Lohan's shots. To me, they seemed almost tragic. I had no problem with the nudity or the poses. However, her make-up seemed...drag queen-ish and she looked as if she hasn't slept for weeks. Maybe it was supposed to be one big ironic project. If not...then I don't really know what else to say. If I'd never met and didn't know a thing about either of them and I saw their photos side by side and was asked, "Which one, of these, will have this be their last photo session before succumbing to an overdose?" I would've picked the wrong one.
MartiniGirl's picture

She used to be cute

Even though I used to think she's cute (a couple years ago, when she did such films as Freaky Friday and her hair was still red), now I do not think she's that attractive. But I have to agree that her weight is a lot better now, I vaguely remember her being way too thin. Think Olson-twin-thin.(Wow try and say that ten times in a row :p)

But these pictures? I can't see past the super-blonde hair which, quite frankly, I don't think suits her at all. It's that hair that ruins the pictures for me.

NLL's picture

lol

Poor Marilyn.

Put your clothes back on Linds.

ice cream's picture

No, no, no.

I agree with the poster above who said that it's distasteful and not sexy.  I feel like it's a cheap way to get some publicity.

Put it away, Lindsay.

Naked ladies

So what do you think? Classy tribute? Eerie foreshadowing? Or just yay, naked ladies?

Are those my options? Well, if I have to choose I'd go for Yay, naked ladies

SAME HERE

I second the "Yay, naked ladies". I'm glad that LiLo is now playing for our team.

beecharmer79's picture

Not so much

I don't really find the photo's of Lindsay very appealing. And they certainly don't compare to Ms. Monroe's.

EW....

 Lindsey looks bad.

lindsay oh lindsay what is inside that closet of yours

I personally am not a big fan of recreating a last films of photo's of great classic icon's like Marilyn Monroe, pesrsonally I think it does show respect or tribute to them, specially in this case this are photo's that mean something its not just a picture of a beautiful woman, but her last phot shoot that she made and was her ltes say last horrah.  Linds though I think has more skeleton's in her closet that we have not yet seen and will be seeing in the future, it seems she has an understanding with marilyn and Heath that we don't quite know, and even though she is 21 that makes it even more defistating. Lets just hope she fights of whatever demond she has so she can really be known for sometihng, not just the scandol queen that she has become

Pyewacket's picture

Yeah, no.

I don't like it.

Alcy's picture

No, no, no...

It just doesn't work on so many levels, it's absolutely nothing to do with 'yay naked ladies' at all...especially if aforesaid naked lady is a spoilt wild child with the screen presence of Marilyn Monroe's little toe.

I've never been a Marilyn fan but I'm thinking back to when Jennifer Love Hewitt made the Tv movie of Audrey Hepburn's life and I'm managing to feel the necessary level of outrage.

Rockstar's picture

YUCK!

And that's all i have to say..
Lourdes's picture

doesn't work

Lindsay's pretty and all, but she looks a bit trashy...

shygurl99's picture

Bad idea

Those pictures do not do justice to Marilyn Monroe. It looks bad and why is Lindsay even in a magazine now? She isn't doing anything, no movie coming out or album?

boywithmoonandstars's picture

okay

I've never understood the Marilyn worship. Linds looks great, especially on the cover shot. For some reason Linds is one of those folks who people just love to hate on, and I don't get that either.
sloane's picture

i have a slight obessesion

i have a slight obessesion with marilyn, too and in the originals she looks stunning, ethereal, and earthy. lindsay and that horrible wig just look cheap. and like shygurl99 said what is she doing naked in a magazine if she's not promoting something? i mean is this girl not courting the publicity and paparazzi demons that hounded her into rehab? its seems like she'll do anything to get attention for absolutely no reason. its pathetic.
ice cream's picture

Lindsay

Why is she doing this,--for the money??? To revive her career? She was much cuter with her natural red hair...

I think Paris Hilton would have been a better choice for this "Marilyn" re-creation...

mohawksfan's picture

no no no

i'm sorry but i don't find L. Lohan attractive AT ALL. This whole photo shoot looks and feels wrong on so many different levels. I don't think it's worth the time to even compare the talentless miss lohan to marilyn monroe. ugh.
pfl's picture

gah!

"Classy tribute? Eerie foreshadowing? Or just yay, naked ladies?

Yay, naked Marilyn, more like.

It irritates me. I like Marilyn a whole lot. Very few people are as photogenic, luminous, and mesmerizing as Marilyn was. Lohan is a poor copy in this photo shoot - and it's largely the photographer's fault. Bad idea.

blunt spoon's picture

Wow. What an enormous waste of time.

I can never understand people's need to "recreate" things. It just cheapens the originals. And, I must say, Lindsey is not looking well at all. It's not often you see such a poignant example of someone so young with such old, tired eyes.
relax devenny's picture

Can't pose to save her life.

Geez!!! I always thought she was a bit attractive...but...these pictures...they're just absolute garbage. And I agree with what mostly everyone has said.
ronia's picture

her face is wrong

Not in that she does not look like Marilyn (although she doesn't) but she just has a really disturbing expression.

If she reminds me, in terms of appearance, of any older movie star, I think her eyes are a bit like Liz Taylor's.

She just seems to be a bit of the tracks, still.  Sad.

TriGirl47's picture

Not even close

I'm glad to see that most agree w/my initial thoughts - Lohan doesn't hold a candle to Marilyn. She's trying too hard and doesn't come close to the original.

"Change."

Bia's picture

I'm not going to get into the whole Lohan "talent" thing...

But I will admit that she is a physically attractive young woman. However, these photos look like the worst drag-queen I have ever seen. Maybe it's her expressions- my first impression was that someone had drugged her, or she hadn't slept in a week. It creates this effect, almost like she's dead and someone's playing with her corpse. Troubling.

On a further note, to me there's something really depressing about how obvious her plastic surgery is (on her breasts). It's like the idea of a little girl playing grown-up by smearing lipstick all over her face and standing in a pair of her mother's high-heels which are three times the size of her feet. Except there's nothing remotely cute about it.

Total impression: None of the glamour of the original, but all of the tragedy.

sirdykesalot's picture

Lindsay is totally not sexy.

Lindsay is totally not sexy.  I think Scarlett Johansson would of been perfect for this shoot.  What was Bert Stern was thinking?

Although I applaud her

Although I applaud her willingness to pose, Lindsay Lohan isn't as pretty as Marilyn Monroe. It's a little sad to see her have to imitate. She looks worn-out.

i like lindsay... but those

i like lindsay... but those pictures do not compare to marilyn.. actually they look tacky and very poorly done.
Joyous's picture

Lookin at Ms. MOnroe... it's a cryin shame

I think these pix make her look pretty bad.
