Lilith Fair returns, but who should play?Listen up ladies — Lilith is back. The popular all-female music festival of the 90s is coming back in 2010. Thirteen years after Sarah McLachlan and her singing sisters first showed the world that women could roar and fill arenas, her Lilith Faith returns to remind us all over again.
The announcement was launched along with the festival’s new website, www.lilithfair.com. So far no artists have been confirmed, but the site includes links to Sarah’s Twitter feed and a free download to one of her songs, so we can only assume she’ll be part of the show.
The page does reveal the first set of cities (though no exact dates) that the festival will hit. They are: Atlanta, Boston, Calgary, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, Washington, D.C. and for you European ladies London. In her announcement, Lilith fair co-founder Terry McBride said: I can’t reveal anything further now, but I can assure fans that we have some exciting announcements over the course of the following weeks, from confirmed artists to additional cities to innovative social initiatives. Lilith 2010 is very much upon us. During its run from 1997 to 1999, Lilith was the highest-grossing touring festival around, attracting 1.5 million fans and raising over $10 million for charities. Performers included founder McLachlan as well as Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Paula Cole, Natalie Merchant, Erykah Badu, The Dixie Chicks, Missy Elliot, The Pretenders, Nelly Furtado and many more. It also featured several out queer artists like Tegan and Sara, Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, Me’shell Ndegeocello and K’s Choice (formerly fronted by Sarah Bettens).
So who would we like to see play in 2010? While the original festival largely had a laid-back folky, female singer-songwriter vibe, I expect the new incarnation to be both poppier and possibly edgier. I’d love a repeat performance by Tegan and Sara and I could see other out artists like Brandi Carlile, Missy Higgins, Kaki King and Uh Huh Her fit perfectly in the lineup.
As for the rest I say they go crazy and have everyone from M.I.A. to Eve and — yes — Lady Gaga. I can totally see Gaga wearing a dress made of Barbie Dolls and then burning them in effigy. Considering what she normally wears, this will be tame by comparison.
True story, I had tickets to the first Lilith Fair but missed it because of my colossal inability to read dates correctly. Trust me, there were tears when I realized my mistake one day too late. Luckily, I got tickets the following year and, I know this will sound corny, but loved every second of its grrrl power empowerment. Being surrounded by thousands upon thousands of beautiful, like-minded women doesn’t hurt either.
So, are you excited for this second time around? Were you there for the first? Who do you want to see play? And is anyone else worried that when Sarah McLachlan starts playing “Angel,” you’ll spontaneously throw your wallet onstage to give money to the ASPCA? Submitted by on October 30, 2009 - 10:00am. |

Last weekend's crush
BRANDI CARLILE!!
And I was there the first time around, but way too young to fully understand it. I also went to warped tour the same summer, so that ruins my street cred.
OMG!!
London??? It's gonna come to London??
There is a god and she DOES love me XD
Dar Williams PLZ!
Agreed
Absolutely.

Glad for all the UK members... Hopefully some day, before I emigrate, Lilith Fair will come to South Africa.
But I can really picture Imogen on stage for a modernised Lilith Fair... She's incredible!

Chris Williamson
One of the members of the lesbain-feminist collective which founded Olivia Records in 1973. Her first album was the Changer and the Changed.Olivia Records folded in the 80's and founded Olivia, the cruise line in 1988.
Williamson was one of the first women to openly write and sing songs and make entire "albums" about loving other women. And her tunes were not all whiny songs, but were mainly reflective songs and empowering songs about "sisterhood" such as "Song of the Soul".
Has there ever been an interview with Chris Williamson on this site? or a story about Olivia Records?
Missed it all those other
Missed it all those other years, but I will definitely catch this one somewhere. I would love to see Adele, Joss Stone bring the young, poppish vibe. There is a local singer here in Nashville named Mandy Barnett who would fit perfectly on stage with a bunch of talented women. She is my favorite singer, and deserves some national attention for her talents.
As for the others, Melissa Etheridge makes my big gay heart swell with pride each time I see her live. She can still bring a house to it's knees like few others with her raw talent and her always kick-ass band. kd lang, of course...her recent Live in London swept me away. Besides, it would probably do both of these girls some good to get out of the house for a while...feel young and vibrant and re-energized enough to get back into the tour groove themselves.
And yes, damn that sarah for those animal commercials!! No, not really damn her, but damn!
yes! i loved lilith fair -
I actually skipped a day of
I actually skipped a day of nursing school (a big deal in the nursing world) and went to the gorge just few days after knee surgery to attend Lilith Fair. Most amazing experience I had ever had. I will say, it took me a few minutes to figure out why a group of women were drinking out of mustard containers though... :)
I can't wait until the 2010 shows!

The first round of cities off the Lilith Fair website. There are no dates yet thought. I live in Philly so I am excited. I didn't get to see it back in 1990's and always regretted it, now I get to make up for it!
Damn does just hearing the
Damn does just hearing the words Lilth Fair bring back the memories. I went to the one in IL in '98. This was before my gayness was known to me. I'm not usually a concert going person but this show was awesome start to finish. Then after I was out I went to the on in PA in '99. Again loved it...even though I was not a big Dixie Chicks fan. It seemed like most everyone else was though. Heh.
This time around I wish Brandi Carlile would join and be at the DC show. My crush on her just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Say you love me. Say you don't. I can make my own mistakes. Let it bend before it breaks. -Brandi Carlile
SERENA RYDER
I have a lot of faves, but Serena tops my list.

Excited
I went to Lilith Fair when it came to Cleveland, I was 17 and loved every moment. It was my first major concert experience. I only went to really hear Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow, but left a major Dixie Chicks fan. It also opened my eyes to all the great female musicians there are.
I'm definitely going in 2010. I would really like to see Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow again. Plus Uh Huh Her, Missy Higgins and Melissa Etheridge.

I would love to see that, and would move mountains to go

Hell to the YES!!! Bring on the Quins!!!
Oh, wow...so many possibilities for these shows. We gotta have some of the stars from the 90's, because it wouldn't be the same without them. Natalie Merchant was amazing, and I miss her music!!

Two words...
...Brandi Carlile. After all, she picked up the guitar after seeing IG at Lilith Fair the first time around!
Sigh...the memories. Travels far and wide. My first girlfriend. Tons of talented ladies everywhere. I'd love to see Lilith veterans like IG, Amy Ray, Natalie Merchant, Tegan and Sarah, K's Choice (I heard they've regouped), Lisa Loeb, and of course the seductress herself, Sarah.
I've been dying to see Dar Williams and Melissa Ferrick for years. This would be a great way to do it. Others I'd like to see on the bill - Katie Herzig, Uh Huh Her, Butterfly Boucher, and Neko Case.
And did I mention Brandi?
I'm your hero and you're my weakness
sarah yes
but id love them to branch out a bit-
yyys, dragonette, etc. needs more electronica/rock, less acoustic!
if pj, bjork or bat for lashes hit the bill, id die.
